The book is divided into three sections.

Section I contains information on the basic anatomy and physiology of the Greyhound. This is needed by all to understand carebookfunction and recognize dysfunction. Dysfunctions within each system are enumerated. Normal blood values for both racing and adopted Greyhounds are presented along with explanations of what these values mean when they fallout of “normal” ranges. Expanded sections on tick diseases, aging medical problems, cancer, and a new overview of immune-mediated diseases have been added.

Section II contains the application of this basic information to the different life stages or ages of a Greyhound. It starts with step-by-step “how to” examination procedures for detection of injuries in the racing Greyhound. These include a 3-minute post race or trial examination as well as in-depth muscle and skeletal examination procedures to find the less obvious injuries. Methods of therapy and rehabilitation are reviewed, followed by a listing and explanation of the common problems seen in the racing Greyhound. The care of the Greyhound that is “breaking-in” to racing (schooling) and the problems that are encountered during this training stage are explained. The next part addresses the problems of the actively racing Greyhound. Finally, chapters on retired and geriatric Greyhounds, breeding Greyhounds with emphasis on puppy care, the juvenile Greyhounds, identification of Greyhounds, and adopted Greyhounds are presented.

Section III addresses drugs and medications. Presented are explanations of the pharmacokinetics or how drugs are absorbed, distributed, and eliminated from the Greyhound's body, together with the common medications used in racing Greyhounds and updates on the approximate withdrawal guidelines, plus an overview of the drug testing procedures in the racing industries of both Australia and the United States.
