M's Glaze Fancy pulls upset at Derby Lane

Saturday night McAllister kennel’s Tiger Boy (7) was seeking five in a row. The 72-pound male (photo right winning the 2012 Inaugural stakes) was the betting favorite at 1-2. To Tiger’s surprise he was in the middle of a speed test during the run to the turn, which forced him to the outside. Floyd & Porter’s M’s Glaze Fancy (2) held tight to the rail, which helped put her in a favorable position entering the backstretch. Patriot’s Jim Mercedes (3) took the early lead, but his wide racing style in the backstretch allowed Fancy to pass him and take the lead. Meanwhile Tiger Boy recovered from his first turn jam and was closing in fast on the frontrunners.

Tiger was blocked again trying to make his move in the far turn. Tiger Boy began building his momentum again, but he would not catch M’s Glaze Fancy that gave a solid performance for Kennel owner and trainer Randy Floyd. Jim Mercedes finished second with Tiger Boy nipping at his heels. Hi Noon Maestro completed the 2-3-7-1 superfecta. Although he finished third Tiger Boy was the first to the escape.

According to McAllister Tiger Boy will be entered for the 28th annual Matinee Idol stakes. The qualifying rounds are this Wednesday matinee in races six and ten. The top four finishers from each heat will make up the stakes Saturday matinee January 28. Tiger Boy will be the entry for the kennel. Tiger Boy will be tested over Derby Lane’s 660-yard oval following the Matinee Idol stakes to prep him for the Distance Classic in April then return to the sprints once he completes the required 660-yard races so he can compete in the Sprint Classic next month.
