2016 $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Champion Ethel Is Here
LAST YEAR’S CHAMP, ETHEL IS HERE, RETIRES
West Palm Beach, Fl. - Round one qualifying action for Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby gets underway Wednesday afternoon, February 8.
Thirty-Two Greyhounds will go to post in four qualifying races which will be contested on the 660-yard Pat C Rendezvous Three-Eighths Mile Course.
All 32 Greyhounds will return for round two on Saturday afternoon, February 11, and then again for round three on Wednesday afternoon, February 15. The top 16 point earners from the third round will compete in the Derby semifinals Sunday afternoon, February 19.
The $50,000 James Paul Derby Championship Final will be contested Saturday afternoon, February 25.
This year’s running will be missing one special little lady.
Last year’s $50,000 James W. Paul Derby champ, Pat C Rendezvous 3/8ths Mile Course record holder and co-holder of last season’s track championship, Ethel Is Here, has been retired. More news to come on her well-earned retirement.
Looking at the round-one qualifiers:
Race 10 appears to be a battle of the early-speed racers, with the main attractions being #2 Go Bon Kickstart (Djays Octane – Go Bon Pure Lee, Royal Racing Team) and a returnee from last year’s Derby final, #3 Atascocita Camry (Flying Coal City – Atascocita Cass, Suncoast Kennel). But one must keep a keen eye on the “Jimmy Hart” of the field, #8 Mouth Ofthesouth (Pat C Clement – That’s Greed Tome, Rader Racing).
There is no doubt who the fan favorite will be in Race 12! After a brief stint at Mardi Gras, the kennel club welcomes back the impeccable styling of #5 O Ya Maybelline (Defrim Bale* - O Ya Norma, Janie Carroll).
High-racing speed warnings will be in effect for Race 14, as last month’s $50,000 He’s My Man Classic champion, #7 Janice Dean “The Weather Machine” (Rhythmless Audra Barkley, Brindle Kennel) gives the other seven entries a 5% chance of raining on her parade.
The final qualifier of the afternoon in Race 15 looks to be a classic! The 2016/17 season win leader, #5 Fraulein Morgan (Kiowa Mon Manny – Fraulein Kaci, Janie Carroll) will be racing off against an abundance of talent including #1 Palm City Roxie (Rhythmless – Flying Skillful, B & B Racing) and the impressive pup and future Puppy Stakes contender, #6 Dutch Jackie (Flying Coal City – Karen Adams, Lester Raines).
Post time for Wednesday afternoon’s first race is 1:00 p.m. This will be the 86th running of the Derby, one of the nation’s longest running stake events, and is named in honor of humanitarian, greyhound owner and dedicated supporter of Greyhound adoption James W. Paul.
