Saturday, April 16, 2016

The initial running of the Wheeling Island National has drawn 65 entries and will kick off Friday afternoon, May 6, with a purse of $140,000.

The stake event will be contested over the 5/16 distance and for pups whelped between July 1, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2014. Most of the entries opened their careers at Wheeling while others made their debuts at Mardi Gras, Melbourne, Naples, Palm Beach and Southland.

The next two rounds are set for Tuesday matinee, May 10, and Friday matinee, May 13. At this juncture, the field will be cut to 32 greyhounds and all points earned will be dropped.

Point totals start over for the remaining three rounds of qualifying – Tuesday afternoon, May 17, Saturday matinee, May 21, and Wednesday afternoon, May 25. The consolation and championship final are planned for the Monday, May 30, matinee card (Memorial Day).

The concept behind futurity events is different from regular stakes – owners make their intentions to race known before their greyhound pups even begin formal training. The owners paid a fee to reserve a spot in the qualifying races back in early 2015, and then made payments on each reserved spot every couple months.

The names of the greyhounds entered were not due until early April 2016.

“I think this event has worked in the past simply because it’s not like any other race out there,” Racing Director Jim Gartland said. “It doesn’t hurt that it usually generates a large purse, but I think people like the format and the fact that, for the most part, they are putting up their own money which shows how much faith they have in their pups.”

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.

I have enjoyed watching and writing about these wonderful competitors, including All-Americans DD's Nelson, Kiowa Sweet Trey, Gene's Champion, WW Apple Jax, Greys Royalcrown, Nimby TP Jan, Hi Noon Hero, Gable Sour Cream, KB's Ruckus and Cry Case.
