After the second of the three qualifying rounds of the $30,000 Dubuque Classic Stakes, two greyhounds stand out from the field.

Joes Johnny Cash and Nickthebartender share the points lead with perfect scores of 40 points after winning in both rounds. They have a 15-point margin over the rest of the field.

Joes Johnny Cash (Copper Kettle), 19-4-2-3, broke open a tight race in the homestretch to win by six lengths in a time of 40.01 seconds for the Dubuque course. The time was the fastest of the four second-round races and the six lengths was the biggest of the four. Joes is a 78-pounder, born Jan. 21, 2016 out of P’s Gibbs – Joe’s Abby.

Nickthebartender (Copper Kettle), 18-8-0-1, went box-to-wire from the seven box, He held on just enough to win by a half-length. Nickthebartender is a 69-pounder, born July 5, 2015 out of Lonesome Cry – Launch Angle.

The third and final round may not offer much drama. Two greyhounds (BGR Firestorm and Yuki Kondo) are tied for eighth with 20 points. AT’s Golden has 18 points. From there the slope gets slippery.

Still a win is worth 20 points and even Knows She Goes and AT’s Tucker, the final qualifiers with 10 each, could have a chance.

Speaking of AT’s Tucker, he’s just lucky. Mopar Performs pulled out hurt and had to drop out of the Stakes, allowing AT’s Tucker to fill in at the 16th slot.

The third round, two races, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29, with the championship race set for Sunday, Sept. 2.
