Form held in the third and final qualifying round for the $30,000 Dubuque Classic Stakes at the Iowa Greyhound Park on Wednesday, August 29.

Seven of the eight greyhounds in the top eight after the second round stayed in the top eight to advance to the championship race.

The eighth spot was a wow!

BGR Sorcerer (Boeckenstedt) broke fifth from the one box and rallied in the homestretch to win his third round race by four lengths. The 20 points for the victory gave the 74-pounder, born Feb. 9, 2016 out of Shonn – Boc’s Magic Trix, a total of 34, vaulting Sorcerer from 12th on the points list to fourth. BGR Sorcerer moves into the championship with a 24-4-6-3 record.

The points leader Fathree (Copper Kettle) finished with 44 points thanks to a third round triumph. Fathree, a 73-pounder, born Nov. 1, 2015 out of Omar Dodger – Lone Star Kelsey, went box-to-wire from the seven box, pulling away for a four length decision. He is 23-11-4-2 on the season.

The second-round co-leaders, who had won in both of the early rounds, had miserable third round outings. Still, the sixth place finishes gave the pair 42 points and a tie for second in the points parade.

Joes Johnny Cash (Copper Kettle), 20-4-2-3, is a 78-pounder born Jan. 21, 2016 out of P’s Gibbs – Joe’s Abby.

Nickthebartender (Copper Kettle), 19-8-0-1, is a 69-pounder born July 5, 2015 out of Lonesome Cry – Launch Angle.

DS Rudolph (Xtrem Hess), 20-8-2-4, finished fifth in the points with 33 after a third-place finish in the third round. The 74-pounder, born Nov. 15, 2015 out of TMC's Remedy – DS Challenger was tied for third after two rounds.

SG Lady Luck (Xtrem Hess), 14-4-2-2, was sixth after two rounds. She remained sixth in the points with 30. The 62-pounder, born Aug. 4, 2016 out of Djays Octane – Munchkin Trent, had a third-place finish in the third round.

Fightin Flo (Copper Kettle), 20-2-3-5, suffered in the third round in finishing seventh. However, the 64-pounder, born July 14, 2014 out of Omar Dodger – Fire And Heat, did enough damage early to finish with 26 points.

The final spot in the championship came down to a coin toss. BGR Firestorm and XK I Agree (Xtrem Hess) each finished with 25 points. XK I Agree had the better third round effort, a second place, but Firestorm called heads for the coin toss and heads it was. BGR Firestorm (Boeckenstedt), 18-2-2-5, is a 64 pounder, born Sept. 23, 2016 out of Djays Octane – Boc’s Good Carma.

By the numbers, the Copper Kettle Kennel had four entries make the championship; Boeckenstedt and Xtrem Hess have two each. Five males and three females are in the finals.

How the patrons will view the field is always interesting. On paper, points leader Fathree and Nickthebartender, despite his abysmal third-round run, could go into the boxes as the favorites.

The championship race is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 2.
