Tuesday, October 16, 2018

The NGA Fall Meet has concluded and despite a relatively low number of pups entered, auction sales once again neared the million dollar mark.

A couple of cold and rainy days didn't seem to dampen the mood or the racing as a total of 287 pups hit the track for first round racing.

The meet activities wrapped up with the Saturday morning auction. 90 pups ended up selling for a total of $966,250. No broods were entered but several "commodities" were offered and went for $5,580, raising funds for adoption and the Hall of Fame.

While a total of 287 pups were originally entered to race, only 224 were actually tabbed for auction sales. All in all, thirteen stakes were contested during the week. Abilene locals fared well at the meet with Vince Berland winning four main stakes while picking up another in a partnership with Craigie, Inc., Shannon Henry won three and David Strong grabbed two. Texas' own Kenneth Biehle picked up three main stake wins representing the Lone Star state.

Big numbers were reached for several consigners. Shannon Henry and her team ended up selling 22 pups for a meet leading total of $323,750. Ken Biehle sold a whopping 30 pups netting $270,000 for the Texas breeder. Kenneth also sold four pups in partnership with Larry Pollard bringing a total of $40,000. While only selling 7 pups, Vince Berland managed to bring in $138,250 in sales and David Strong got $103,750 for the 10 pups he sold. Ursula O'Donnell had a decent showing as well selling seven pups for a total of $47,500. All in all, 12 consigners and 35 buyers combined to sell and buy a total of 90 pups in the auction.

The top selling pup of the meet was Shannon Henry's JS King Kunta (SH Avatar-JS Gowiththeflo) who went to Jay Rangel for a hefty $57,000.

All official results and figures will be released in the next issue of the Greyhound Review.

Other activities during the Fall Meet included the Wednesday night trivia contest and the induction of a couple of stalwarts into the Greyhound Hall Of Fame: Kennel owner and breeder, Ross Lingle and the great racer and stud dog, Pecos Cannon.

Spring Meet dates have been set for Apr. 15-20, 2019 in Abilene.
