Monday, October 29, 2018

Even though 2 favorites took home top spots as the wire in round 2 of the 2018 bestbet Derby, there were still plenty of surprise winners on the card. Coming out leading the pack was the back to back winner in the rounds, and the only undefeated greyhound remaining, Token Phantom. Coming from well off the pace yet again, Phantom was a ways back at the break in the 9th race but showed just how much talent and speed he has at his disposal. Breaking 7th, he rushed up well into third by the first call. Around the turn and down the backside he went chasing the pace and gaining on the leaders. By the far turn he had moved up to second, and in the stretch, there were not going to stop him. Digging in deep, he powered by the always in contention threat My Island Time to steal away the victory. Pacesetter RS Axel Rox was also in contention throughout but was outfinished late and survived to win the show photo over the steady chasing factor Quick Shot.

The other favorite to get things done was Johnny Camaro in the 13th race on the card. Beating the box, he took instant command over the field and put several lengths, almost 4, between him and his nearest competitor at the first call. Breezing on the front end he saw his lead diminish by the far turn to just a length and a half, and they were catching him late, but he used every inch of that early lead to his benefit and lasted at the win to take home the slim win in 37.54 seconds. Kudos to Itsafoolsgold who put on a closing clinic. Gaining with every step she took around the oval, she gave it her all, and made up big ground, but just couldn’t reel in the leader before the wire. AB Smoke Show was also in the mix with a strong slightly gaining effort. Finishing just off in third by a length and a half, this first round winner was showing that he is not going away. Distant 4th was the never changing threat WW Outlaw Pearl.

Longshots reigned once again in the other three races as Proof Of Concept won in race 7 at 9-1, Dawn Wells won the 11th race at 5-1, and Arkans Tt Cash won at 4-1 in race number 15. Concept broke close, chased the leaders early, gaining throughout and took over in the stretch to seal the win. Fellow closer Leadin The Crowd was a quick finishing 2nd over the late leader, Pat C Bitteroot who finished third. Early leader No Trebel tangles with Bitterroot, and faded back late, but managed to hold on in the money at the wire. Dawn wells pulled off a similar feat as she just wanted to more at the wire. Stalking the early leaders to the deep stretch, she drove by, without a muzzle on, and seized a victory from the clutches of defeat. Jessica Mendoza gave a winning try and lost the photo for the W by a neck. Early leader Atascocita Kitty stole a huge lead but gave it all back late and was outgamed near the wire for third, as the gradual gaining Mac’s Quinn rounded out the superfecta. Saving the best for last, Arkans Tt Cash put up the biggest trip on the card in the last stakes event on the card. Hitting the lid, Cash was out like a shot and never looked back. Stealing away 4 lengths early on, he was never in question and coasted around the racetrack on the front end to win by 3 in the fastest time on the night, 37.46 seconds. Chasing, but not gaining on the leader, was Quick Style who finished 2nd. Toodles came from off the pace to get up into the show position at the wire, and the early threat Jurassic Bark drifted back steadily to hold on in the superfecta.

The field will be cut down for the quarter-finals and 4 races will remain in the running on Monday evening October 29th at bestbet Jacksonville. Plan on joining us!
