Back to Fall Meet 2017 » Fall Meet Wraps Up
Tuesday, October 17, 2017

The NGA Fall Meet has concluded and despite a somewhat surprisingly low number of pups entered, auction sales once again topped the million dollar mark.

Generally speaking, the weather held up for the meet. With the exception of a couple of rainy days and a few chilly mornings, temperatures were pleasant for this time of year but, of course, the wind blew fairly steadily for most of the two weeks

The meet activities wrapped up on Saturday morning, Oct. 14, with another million-dollar auction. Unofficially, 114 pups were sold for $1,089,750. Four entities in the brood auction brought in $1,950.

A total of 298 pups were originally entered into the races while 254 of those were tabbed for auction sales. All in all, eleven stakes were contested during the week. David Strong of Solomon, KS faired very well, winning four main stakes and one Flite II. Six pups out of his litter of Superior Panama-Windy Reba (co-owned by Kurt Phillips) made up the entire field of the August main stake which was won by Eminence who eventually sold in the ring for $20,000. The littermates making up the final sold for a total of $65,500. Two other litters owned or co-owned by David, sold all or in part for $75,500 and $72,000. Those litters were out of Djays Octane-Tortuga Gift and KC And All-Lucia, respectively.

Big numbers were reached for several consigners. The Rangel-Bitterman team sold 30 pups for some $287,750; Shannon Henry had 18 go for $180,500 and Kenneth Biehle of Texas sold 28 pups for $175,000. Rangel captured one main, five Flite I and two Flite II stakes, Biehle managed three mains, two Flite I and two Flite II wins, Shannon Henry grabbed two mains and three Flite II victories while Vince Berland picked up one main, two Flite I and two Flite II events.

Top selling pup of the meet was Ursula O’Donnell’s Breitling (Shonn-CTW Urban Tan) who went to Tom Ferris for $40,000. Average sale price was $9,559.21 per pup.

All official results and figures will be released in the next issue of the Greyhound Review.

Other activities during the Fall Meet included the Wednesday night banquet, in honor of Bob Crossland, and the induction of four into the Greyhound Hall Of Fame: Kennel owner, Jack Kahn along with greyhounds Izz A Champ, Wayside Carol and Dodgem By Design.
