Two favorites and two long shots posted victories Tuesday afternoon in the fourth round of the $140,000 Wheeling Island National.

The field was cut to 32 greyhounds for the fourth round with points accumulated in the first three qualifiers dropped. The fifth round will be Saturday matinee, May 21, and the sixth round Wednesday afternoon, May 25.

The consolation and championship final are planned for the Monday, May 30, matinee card (Memorial Day).

Favorites Atascocita Sig and JD Independence as well as long shots WW’s Glow N Show and JD Tight Fit were victorious in Tuesday’s fourth round. Each earned 16 points.
Following are brief capsules of Tuesday’s fourth round:

Atascocita Sig stalked frontrunner Lady Sasquatch around the track before getting up by a length at the wire in 29.53. Superior Lucious closed for second while Lady Sasquatch settled for third.

JD Independence rushed to an early lead and never looked back in winning by 3 ½ lengths in 29.47. Jones Appetit and Flyin Bold Ruler rounded out the trifecta ticket.

WW’s Show N Glow, sent to post at 15-1 odds, posted a box-to-wire 3 ½-length victory in 29.56. PJ Hold My Own was second followed by Coach Vogs.

JD Tight Fit, a 9-1 shot, rocketed to the front early before holding off a fast-charging Flying Wolf Pack by a head in 29.63. SG Outlaw Women was third.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately.
