DUBUQUE, Iowa - Super C Butterum of the Superior Kennel has been perfect in topping the Queens points while Jd Dignity of the Stidham Racing Kennel leads the Kings chase after two rounds of the $30,000 King & Queen Stakes at the Iowa Greyhound Park.
Butterum, a 59-pounder, born Jan. 1, 2014 out of KC And All – Super C Arias, is the only greyhound on either side to win in both rounds. In the Saturday, June 25, second round Butterum, 7-4-1-1, broke fourth from the six box but quickly took the lead then hung on well enough to win by a half-length and secure the maximum of 40 points for the first two rounds.
The Queen points chase spreads out behind Butterum. Jd Spark Plug, 8-3-2-0, of Stidham posted a second place, behind Butterum, in the second round to go with a first-round win and has 28 points. O Ya Curly Sue (Ward), 7-4-1-1, rallied from third in the homestretch to win in the second round by a length and sits in third place with 28 points.
Fourth is Joes Martina (Copper Kettle), 8-2-4-0, who built her 24 points on a pair of seconds. She is just ahead of Aj’s Callie (Jackson) and Jd Bombshell (Stidham), each with 23. Callie, 9-2-1-2, the 2015 Iowa Breeders Cup champion, stumbled to a fifth after an opening round win. Bombshell, 8-6-0-1, gave a powerful performance in her second round race to win by nine and a half lengths.
The Kings’ chase is close as Jd Dignity, a 79 pounder, born June 18, 2014 out of Id Titanium – Jd Versace, leads with only 28 points. Dignity, 8-4-2-2, won in the first round and took a third in the second round.
Two greyhounds, Oya Pawtycrasher (Ward), 9-4-2-0, and Slatex Elvis (Jackson), 4-1-0-0, are tied for second with 25 points. Pawtycrasher came from second in the homestretch to win his second round race by two lengths. Elvis, the track’s 2015 win champion, slipped late to a fourth-place finish in the second round.
Fourth is Tahas Tornado (Jackson), 9-3-0-2, who won his second-round race by four lengths.
Three greyhounds are within two points of Tahas Tornado as the field prepares for the third round.
The Queens field will be light one greyhound. Jd Tight Squeeze (Stidham), with 13 points, injured a toe and is already a scratch for the third round.
After the third round on July 1, the top four Kings and top four Queens will race for the title in the July 4 championship race.
