Joeslittlepebble surprised nearly everybody in winning the $30,000 Dubuque Course Classic at the Iowa Greyhound Park on Friday, September 2.

The question, explained David Ungs of the Copper Kettle Kennel, was “her experience. You could tell right away she was a 3/8 mile greyhound, so entering her in this Classic made sense.

“We felt she had the talent to make the final. She had the fastest time in one of the qualifying rounds.”

Joeslittlepebble, a 65-pounder was the youngest in the final field. She was born on Dec. 2, 2014 out of P’s Gibbs – Joe’s Abby. She finished sixth in the points chase in making the championship run.

The pup went to the boxes as the co-longshot with O Ya Pawty Girl (Wayne R. Ward). She drew the five box “which was no good,” said Ungs. “She broke last but that didn’t bother me because she did not find trouble.” Joeslittlepebble worked her way up to fourth place during the first half of the race.

“She was able to run clean,” said Ungs, “and I was happy about that.

” Up front Ds Hip Hop (Xtrem Hess), Aj’s Callie (Jackson) and O Ya Curly Sue (Wayne R. Ward) vied for the lead. Hip Hop had broke on top; Aj’s Callie had briefly led before fading; then Hip Hop retook the lead.

As the trio battled round the far turn, Joeslittlepebble got her chance.

“There were a lot of good greyhounds,” said Ungs, “but they got bogged up (in the far turn) and our greyhound was able to run around them.”

Once in front Joeslittlepebble was in firm command in the homestretch, winning by two and a half lengths in a time of 39.50 seconds for the Dubuque course.

The victory moves Joeslittlepebble to 20-4-6-4 for the IGP season.

“It means a lot to win the stakes,” said Ungs. “She is a tough greyhound.”

Ds Hip Hop, 21-3-5-4, settled for second. O Ya Curly Sue, 18-9-2-5, who led the points qualifying and was the patrons’ favorite going to the boxes, was third, four lengths back.

Dnt Finbarclancy (T And T), 16-6-6-2, rallied late to finish fourth, six lengths back.

Aj’s Callie, 21-4-6-4, faded to fifth and was eight and a half lengths behind.

O Ya Pawty Girl, 18-2-1-4, came up a bit late to finish sixth, missing fifth by a half length; Xkt Shelly Turin (Xtrem Hess), 17-4-3-2, faded late and just held off Superior Yesy (Superior), 18-8-3-1, for seventh.

Joeslittlepebble paid for patrons $29.20, $17.80 and $14.80. Ds Hip Hop paid $5.40 and $5.60. O Ya Curly Sue paid $3.80.

The 1-5 quiniela paid $375.40. The 5-1-A tri-box paid $360.20. The 5-1-4-6 10 cents superfecta paid $202.18. The 1-8-A $1 pick 3 paid $6.90. The 1-A-5 $1 pick 3 paid $6.90.

The Iowa Greyhound Park quickly returns to stakes racing with the first of the three qualifying rounds of the Future Star Stakes on Friday, September 9.
