A number of Grade AA and A greyhounds are entered in the upcoming $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Stakes which kicks off Saturday afternoon, Sept. 10, at Wheeling Island.

There are 25 greyhounds entered – 15 from Wheeling and 10 invaders from Tri-State Greyhound Park.

The second round is set for Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 14, with the semifinals during the Sunday matinee card on Sept. 18. The championship final will be held on Friday afternoon, Sept. 23.

Following are capsule looks at the entries for the WVGOBA Juvenile Stakes: greyhound, track raced at, kennel racing out of for stakes, record, highest grade:

GF Taras Tango: Wheeling Island, Patriot/Taplin Kennel, 5 wins, 1 second, 4 thirds and 7 fourths in 18 starts, Grade AA.

GF Zelda: Wheeling Island, Patriot/Taplin Kennel, 6 wins, 1 second and 1 third in 13 races, Grade AA.

Lady Sasquatch: Wheeling Island, Patriot/Taplin Kennel, 6 wins, 6 seconds, 4 thirds and 4 fourths in 29 starts; Grade AA.

RS’soutofcontrol: Wheeling Island, Patriot/Taplin Kennel, 5 wins, 5 seconds, 4 thirds and 8 fourths in 29 outings, Grade A.

CET Dirty Debby: Tri-State, Steve Sarras Kennel, 2 wins, 1 second and 3 thirds in 11 races; Grade C.

CET Dirty Nicki: Tri-State, Steve Sarras Kennel, 4 wins, 4 seconds and 5 thirds in 14 starts, Grade A.

CET Big Jeff: Tri-State, Steve Sarras Kennel, 1 second in 1 races, Maiden.

RP McMurphey: Wheeling Island, Steve Sarras Kennel, 3 wins, 3 seconds, 3 thirds and 4 fourths in 17 outings, Grade B.

DKC Your Man: Tri-State, Wayne Ward Kennel, 2 wins in 3 outings, Grade C.

GLS Steppinout: Wheeling Island, Jacobs Racing Kennel, 1 second in 3 trips, Maiden. GLS Moneymaker: Wheeling Island, Jacobs Racing Kennel, 1 win in 3 starts, Grade D.

GLS Big Bucks: Wheeling Island, Jacobs Racing Kennel, 1 win, 1 second and 2 fourths in 5 races.

In last year’s WVGOBA Juvenile Stakes, CET Big John took command late and pulled away for a 3-length victory. Take Off Tug closed from sixth in the stretch to take runner up honors while pacesetter Cam Wookie settled for third.

 

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.

I have enjoyed watching and writing about these wonderful competitors, including All-Americans DD's Nelson, Kiowa Sweet Trey, Gene's Champion, WW Apple Jax, Greys Royalcrown, Nimby TP Jan, Hi Noon Hero, Gable Sour Cream, KB's Ruckus and Cry Case.
