e Patriot/Taplin, Steve Sarras and Wayne Ward kennels posted victories in the opening round of the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Stakes Saturday afternoon at Wheeling Island.

GF Street Song (Patriot/Taplin), DKC Muddy Paws (Wayne Ward) and CET Dirty Nicki (Steve Sarra) each accumulated 15 points with their first round qualifying wins. RS’soutofcontrol (Patriot/Taplin) and DKC Mud Puppy (Wayne Ward) finished in a dead heat for win in the other preliminary round race, earning 12 ½ points each.

The second round is set for Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 14, with the semifinals during the Sunday matinee card on Sept. 18. The championship final will be held on Friday afternoon, Sept. 23.

Following are capsule reviews of the first round races:

GF Street Song, sent to post at 9-1 odds, stalked frontrunner Lady Sasquatch before taking charge in the homestretch – pulling away by 1 ½ lengths in 30.25. DKC Muddy Waters got up for second as Lady Sasquatch settled for third.

DKC Muddy Paws, a 7-1 shot, posted a box-to-wire 1 ½-length victory in 29.90. GF Zelda was second while DKC Mud Dauber rounded out the trifecta ticket.

CET Dirty Nicki, the second favorite at 4-1 odds, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in romping to a 4 ½-length victory in 29.80. The favorite GF Taras Tango got up for second while DKC Love The Mud was third.

In the dead heat for win race, RS’soutofcontrol (4-1) raced out to a 2-length advantage before DKC Mud Puppy (5/2) got up at the wire in 30.17. Mac’s Claridge was third, only a length back.

Two greyhounds were ruled out of the stakes event after the first round. Mac’s Cambridge (A Ray Kennel) fell and did not finish while GLS Moneymaker (Jacobs Racing Kennel) graded off.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.
