Monday, November 28, 2016

Long shot Grim Beavers closed in the stretch to overtake frontrunner Leo the Lover and then held off a fast-charging GF Taras Tango to capture the $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Sprint Stakes at Wheeling Island Friday afternoon, Nov. 25.

Sent to post at 15-1 odds, Grim Beavers cleared the first turn second – several lengths behind Leo The Lover. Grim Beavers narrowed the margin coming off the last turn before overpowering the pacesetter deep in the stretch.

It was far from over as GF Taras Tango made one final rush only to finish second to Grim Beavers by a head in a photo finish. Leo The Lover settled for third.

Finishing behind the top three – Grim Beavers (Steve Sarras Kennel), GF Taras Tango (Patriot/Taplin Kennel) and Leo The Lover (Steve Sarras Kennel) – were GF Street Song (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), fourth; Ken McNabb (Rico Racing Kennel), fifth; GF Zelda (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), sixth; CET Dirty Nicki (Steve Sarras Kennel), seventh; and Nola Nikole (Steve Sarras Kennel), eighth.

Grim Beavers races out of the Steve Sarras Kennel, is owned by Monroe Racing and trained by Barbara Long.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.

I have enjoyed watching and writing about these wonderful competitors, including All-Americans DD's Nelson, Kiowa Sweet Trey, Gene's Champion, WW Apple Jax, Greys Royalcrown, Nimby TP Jan, Hi Noon Hero, Gable Sour Cream, KB's Ruckus and Cry Case.
