DUBUQUE, Iowa – There are clear-cut leaders in the Kings and the Queens point standings after the second round of the $30,000 Stakes at the Iowa Greyhound Park. However, eight greyhounds will be in the final field making for plenty of candidates to fill the boxes for the final.

Ladies first.

Rf River (Superior Kennel) tops the Queen field with a perfect 40 points. River, a 68 pounder, born Dec. 28, 2014 out of Kc And All – Af Nala, hung on nicely to take a length’s decision in the June 24 second round to go with a six-length runaway in the first round.

She is being challenged. Boc’s Queen Gina broke sixth and rallied from third in the homestretch to win her second-round race by a nose. Gina finished second in the first round for a total of 32 points.

Jd Allure (Stidham) had put together an opening round win with a third place finish in the second round for a total of 28 points.

Three other greyhounds have earned at least 20 points after two rounds.

Perfect on the Kings’ side is Konomi.

The 76-pounder, born July 6, 2015 out of Sh Avatar – Money Maid, broke fifth in his second round race, but quickly grabbed the lead and kept adding to it to win by five and a half lengths. Konomi won his first-round race by five lengths.

Konomi needs only to have a decent third-round effort to qualify.

In second place, but far back is Slatex Larnce (Wayne R. Ward) with only 24 points. Four other greyhounds sit with 20 plus points.

Under the Stakes’ format, a victory is worth 20 points (a second place is worth 12 points). Doing the math, a third-round win could easily vault any of the greyhounds, in either the Queens or Kings list, with 20-plus points, into the championship field.

Among the kennels, Stidham has six Kings and three Queens advancing to the third round. Superior has five and three; Ward has three and three and Boeckenstedt has one and four.

Sixteen greyhounds advanced, setting two Kings and two Queens third-round races on Friday, June 30. Following the third round, the field will be cut to the championship four Kings and four Queens for the Tuesday, July 4, title run.
