The Steve Sarras Kennel posted three victories in the first round of the $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Middle Distance 3/8 Championship Stakes Sunday afternoon at Wheeling Island.

CET Patches, Hit Me Chief and Bustin BJ captured their first round races for the Cris Ohler-trained Steve Sarras Kennel. Each accumulated 15 points heading into the Thursday afternoon, Nov. 16, second round.

The semifinals will be held on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19 and the championship final is set for Saturday afternoon, Nov. 25.

The Patriot-Taplin Kennel had two wins as the stake event kicked off – GF Taras Tango and GF Booker Tee.

Following are capsule looks at the first round races:

CET Patches, winner of the WVGOBA Juvenile in September, caught frontrunner GF Street Song in the stretch – pulling away for a 2 ½-length victory in 38.66. Crossfire Clyde and Ryla Grace got up to round out the trifecta ticket.

Hit Me Chief roared by pacesetter GF Calamity Kate coming home – winning by 4 ½ lengths in 38.28. CET Fast Sydney completed the trifecta play.

Bustin BJ posted a box-to-wire 3 ½-length victory in 37.93. Rico’s Megadeath and Mac’s Finn chased the leader all around the racetrack.

GF Taras Tango rushed home from fifth in the homestretch to win by a half length in 38.26. Grim Beavers finished second with Mac’s Finn third – all three only a length apart.

GF Booker Tee jumped out to a 3-length cushion before holding off Jason Martini by a nose in 38.38. Mac’s Star Wars settled for third.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.

I have enjoyed watching and writing about these wonderful competitors, including All-Americans DD's Nelson, Kiowa Sweet Trey, Gene's Champion, WW Apple Jax, Greys Royalcrown, Nimby TP Jan, Hi Noon Hero, Gable Sour Cream, KB's Ruckus and Cry Case.
