Steve Sarras Kennel’s Hit Me Chief posted his second consecutive qualifying round victory Thursday afternoon in the $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Middle Distance 3/8th Championship Stakes at Wheeling Island.

Hit Me Chief has accumulated 30 points heading into the Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19, semifinal round. The field will be cut to the top 24 point producers for the semifinals.

The championship final is set for Saturday afternoon, Nov. 25.

Other second round winners were GLS Chief (Jacobs Racing), GLS Jersey Girl (Jacobs Racing), Billy Bibbit (Steve Sarras) and Mac’s Finn (A Ray).

Following are capsule looks at the second round races:

Hit Me Chief ran down frontrunner GF Street Song in the stretch to capture his second straight stakes qualifying round win by 1 ½ lengths in 38.48. GLS Ronaldo got up for third.

GLS Chief caught frontrunner GF Booker Tee coming home before pulling away for a 2 ½-length victory in 38.56. GF Taras Tango closed from fifth in the stretch to take second while Bustin BJ rounded out the trifecta ticket.

Billy Bibbit was fifth at the escape turn but closed with a big rush in the stretch to win by 3 ½ lengths in 38.18. Jason Martini finished second with Mac’s Florence getting up for third.

GLS Jersey Girl stalked pacesetter Bo Bo Bruiser all around the track before taking charge in the stretch – winning by 2 ½ lengths in 38.23. GF Calamity Kate edged Bo Bo Bruiser for runner up honors.

Mac’s Finn posted a box-to-wire 3 ½-length victory in 37.96. Crossfire Clyde closed late for second while Strong Storch completed the trifecta play.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately.
