< Back JERRY CRUCE OBITUARY May 14, 2021 Jerry D. Cruce of West Memphis Arkansas passed away at home in the early morning hours of April 26, 2021, surrounded by friends and family Jerry was born June 6th, 1946 in Perry, Florida . Jerry trained greyhounds starting in the mid to late 70’s working for the Don Klink kennel in Miami, Florida & then with the Tom Farrell Kennel in Jacksonville, Florida. He spent the last 18 years of his training career with the Bussmann-Balakas kennel at Southland Greyhound Park in West Memphis Arkansas where he is was affectionately known as Papa Smurf. He loved the greyhounds & enjoyed working with them. He enjoyed, the people he worked with & around in the greyhound business, including the haulers & especially the farmers, who raised the dogs. He met his future wife Mary on a blind date in April of 71. They married on 9-15-84 & were married until his passing. He was predeceased by : his parents, John David Cruce and Christine Watson Cruce; his brother Lewis; and his parents-in-law, Eddie and Maria "Constance" Dicandia. He is survived by : his wife Mary Dicandia Cruce; his sons, Bart Falcone, Phillip Falcone and Quinde Falcone Jr. (Yolanda); his grandchildren, Quinde Falcone III, Kim Falcone, Taylor Falcone and Allison Sosne; his great grandchild Nellie Frey Sosne; his goddaughter Chelsea Whitman; his siblings, Reba Cruce Rogers (Freddie), Joseph William Cruce (Derry) and Richard Harold Cruce (Carol); and his sister-in-law Bessie Cruce. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held on Saturday, May 1st 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Burns Funeral Home He was laid to rest at the Hendry Cemetery in Shady Grove, Florida Previous Next

Jeff Prince Dec 31, 2019 West Palm Beach, Fl. – Sometimes you know who will win a race a few seconds after the starting box opens. Sometimes you find out the winner as the result of a photo finish. In the twenty-second running of the $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity, it may have taken about three seconds after the race began that you knew who the championship blanket would be placed on. When the starting box opened, it was August Dawn breaking on top and extending his lead to the first turn. As written in the summary of the final, “If August Dawn breaks alertly and garners the early lead, there will be no catching him.” Now comes the surprises. GV On A Quest , the longest shot on the board at 37-1, outbroke her inside competition and reached the rail, outgunning the undefeated qualifying finalist, RF Oka . As the finalist raced into the final turn, Atascocita Jarta , going off at 17-1, found room on the inside and secured her spot as the third-place finisher, behind GV On A Quest . Rounding out the Superfecta was the hard-closing finalist Skiddy Hotrod , who himself went off at 34-1. August Dawn was victorious by three lengths and traversed the 545-Yard Royal Palm Course in a speedy time of 29.79 seconds, returned a healthy $19.60 to the delight of his supporters. CET Dirty Skinny (Steve Sarras Kennel) and CET Dirty Toodls (Steve Sarras Kennel) each had a win and two seconds in the three qualifying rounds to accumulate 35 points. JAS Strait Aces (Patriot/Taplin Kennel) had a pair of wins and a fourth in the preliminary races to also notch 35 points. Completing the final field are Wild Chomp Dude (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel), 32 points; CET Marlin (Imark Kennel), 30 points; TS Woody (Steve Sarras Kennel), 25 points; Wild Blue Bee (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel) and CET Zinc (Imark Kennel), 24 points each.
