< Back GF LA DUENA EARNS 2019 TOP GREYHOUND HONORS AT WHEELING Stan Pawloski Jan 21, 2020 The queen is king. GF La Duena reigns. Since coming to Wheeling Island from Tri-State Greyhound Park in June 2018, the Patriot/Taplin Kennel star has been the queen of the 330-yard distance and arguably the best 3/16th sprinter ever on the Wheeling Course. In 2019, GF La Duena strengthened her superiority with a racetrack-leading 32 victories. GF La Duena’s accomplishment earned her top greyhound honors at Wheeling Island for 2019. She is the first 330-yard racer in the history of Wheeling Island racing to capture the track win championship. For Patriot/Taplin Kennel trainer Joe Otto, GF La Duena is the third track win leader he has been associated with at Wheeling Island. He trained Mi Nice Catch (31 wins) for Majestic Kennel in 1997 and was an assistant to Don Corey when Stage Door Ace (29 wins) raced out of the Steubenville Kennel in 1989. “It’s quite an honor to train a track win leader because it doesn’t happen very often. (GF) La Duena had a fantastic year of racing and I am very proud of her,” Otto said. “I wasn’t surprised … she was winning at that rate when she came to Wheeling in 2018, so if she stayed healthy I thought she could have a pretty good year. She’s a bundle of energy.” A June 2016 greyhound out of KC And All-GF Sister Karen, GF La Duena was a mark of consistency throughout the year. In addition to her 32 wins, she had 7 seconds, 4 thirds and 3 fourths in 49 starts – an 87 percent mark in the trifecta and a 94 percent mark on the superfecta ticket. All of her races were against Grade AA or TAA company.“In a race where it’s all about the break, her numbers are amazing. If she gets the lead early, she usually draws away,” Otto noted. “If she breaks in the pack, she still can rush to the front. She’s very good at looking for spots, finding a hole and hitting it fast.” The Tom Salem-owned GF La Duena had a knack of stringing victories together. She had a pair of six-race, a four-race and a trio of three-race win streaks in 2019. “Long winning streaks are so hard to do at any distance, but especially 330,” Otto said. “A greyhound has to hit the break every time out, not coming from behind at that distance.” GF La Duena started 2019 with 14 straight trifecta finishes before her streak was halted. After finishing out of the money once, she came back and hit the superfecta in her next 15 races in a row. Owner Tom Salem was thrilled by GF La Duena’s stellar performance. “I couldn’t be any prouder. You don’t find too many greyhounds like her,” Salem said. “She’s been steady since coming to Wheeling and you know she’ll give a solid effort every time out.” What does 2020 hold for GF La Duena? “Hopefully she has another great year,” Otto said. In 69 career 3/16th starts at Wheeling Island, GF La Duena has 46 wins, 10 seconds, 6 thirds and 4 fourths. While GF La Duena topped the leader board with 32 victories, 31 other greyhounds won at least 11 races in 2019 at Wheeling Island. < Back ROUND 3 OF 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY Jan 21, 2020 Only three races left as the competition heats up in the 2020 edition of the Orange Park Derby. The best routers are still around, and the converted sprinters are making their cases as well. Loads of talent still in the mix as the 24 greyhounds head to post on money evening for the quarter finals. Let’s take a close look at the races and see if we can get the week started off on the right foot. Monday evening January 20th, 2020 – Round 3 of the Orange Park Derby Race 9 – Super C Addison is starting to figure out the distance and that is bad news for the rest of this field. Hot off an impressive win, she will thrive tonight as she is finally on the rail. UC Ricky Snickle won last time out too and has the early needed to see the lead again tonight. Holding on late will be his true hurdle to overcome. Pat C Jacob also got things righted last time out and might just have the best raw speed in the bunch. If he gets loose, watch out. WW Spending Time will contend early for sure with all the breaking ability but won’t be able to hand late with the closers. (2-7-4-3) Race 11 – Undefeated so far is RTSS Gonwitdawin. Posted up impressive back to back box to wire victors from outside post positions, more to come in this effort. No speed around here at the break and another wide box should equal a hat trick. Trying to take her down is the talented Fakeit To Makeit. With 5 quinielas in a row, including a pair of wins, she is no slouch, and if she hits the box, she might just upset the apple cart here. Don’t forget about the closers though. LK’s I Got this is a solid grade A that gets a good post and can challenge throughout, and BGR Woe Is Me is rising in the ranks, running hot in the rounds, and will come flying late to challenge. Race 14 – RPG Get You Back is the other undefeated greyhound in the stakes and looks to be the one to beat for the title. With 3 straight, and 5 wins in 6 races, she is the real deal. Out and gone early on is her motto, and tonight I just more of that happening. Trying to make her work for it will be Pat C Woozy. A huge winner in round 1, she found trouble in round 2 and finished out of the money. With a same post tonight, you don’t know just what you are going to get. If she clears early, it could be quite a race. WP’s Twisted Lady was hot heading into the rounds but has cooled off in the 2 efforts. Still in the money, but not breaking like she has in the past. If she can find that early foot, she too could throw her hat into the ring for the victory. Alcohol U Later is a closer over the distance and winning against the top tier might be too much to ask. Finding a spot in the money, well that is another. Look for her round out the superfecta tonight. (4-2-6-3) The semi-finals will run on Saturday evening January 25th at bestbet Jacksonville. < Back Wheeling weekend handle tops $3.2 million Stan Pawloski Sep 3, 2024 Wheeling Island’s Labor Day weekend handle topped $3.2 million. The handle represents the amount of money bet on Wheeling greyhound races from on-track patrons and from simulcast outlets. The Wheeling handles for the weekend follow: Friday, Aug. 30, $1,084,383; Saturday, Aug. 31, $1,141,163; and Sunday, Sept. 1, $1,002,098. The total handle for the 3-day period was $3,227,644. Including Thursday, Aug. 29, the 4-day handle last week topped $4 million – $4,032,083. The Wednesday, Aug. 28, program was cancelled last week due to extreme heat conditions, and Wheeling didn’t race on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. Previous Next
