< Back RF JUANITA CAPTURES FUTURE STARS STAKE Oct 6, 2021 RF Juanita celebrated her second birthday with a victory in Iowa Greyhound Park’s Future Star stakes Saturday, Oct. 2. The red and fawn female broke well and used her strong cornering skills to post a nearly two-length victory. “She needed to get out fast to get a chance to win it,” said Jerry Cole, Superior Kennel trainer. RF Juanita, starting from the 3 box, was in a group with box neighbors BGR Big Foot Joe, of Boeckenstedt Kennel, and North End Jill, of Copper Kettle Kennel. As they neared the first turn, Juanita started to separate. “Once she got her nose in front, I started looking for the 1 (BGR Bottom Up) and 8 (BGR Twistedsista). They were the two main threats.” She powered through the corner to extend a lead she never relinquished. “She runs turns really great,” Cole said. “It obviously helped her tonight.” She posted a 31.35.Others on the board were BGR Bottoms Up, BGR Big Foot Joe and BGR Twistedsista. All are from Boeckenstedt Kennel. The rest finished as follows: KW Bugatti (Jackson Greyhounds), BGR Half Rack (Boeckenstedt Kennel), North End Jill (Copper Kettle Kennel) and Eager Erlene (Copper Kettle Kennel). The purse for the Future Stars was $30,000. The earnings by finish are: $12,000, $6,000, $3,000, $2,400, $2,100, $1,800, $1,500 and $1,200. T’s Capt Phasma, of T and T Kennel, won last year and Revin Devon, of Copper Kettle Kennel, won in 2019. Juanita has been in the money in 25 of 26 races this season. “I can’t believe what she’s been doing. She’s absolutely having a great season,” Cole said. “She’s a very special dog and she’s getting better each time. “I’m pleased at the way she’s been running,” Cole said. “And I’m happy for how well she’s doing.” Even as the 2021 season nears its end, there are more races in store for the now 2-year-old from Gable Sour Cream and RF River. RF River won the King and Queen stakes at Iowa Greyhound Park in 2017 and the Iowa Breeders’ Cup in 2016. The Iowa Breeders’ Cup is in the works, along with a couple of stakes the final day of the season on Oct. 31, the Secretary’s Choice and the Au Revoir. The Breeders’ Cup final is Sunday, Oct. 24. Heading into the Wednesday, Sept. 14, second round, CET Barracuda, CET Fernando and CET Marlin have each accumulated 15 points on the strength of their first-round victories to top the leader board. The semi-finals are set for Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18, and the stake final is scheduled for the Friday, Sept. 23, matinee card. Capsule looks at the first-round races follow: CET Barracuda took the early lead and never looked back in winning by 1 ½ lengths in 29.69. CET Moto Moto finished second while LFR Lucky Clover got up for third. CET Fernando rocketed to a commanding early lead and never challenged in posting a 7 ½-length win in 29.76. Mac’s Monreaux and CET Tiger Boy rounded out the trifecta ticket. CET Marlin closed in the stretch to overtake frontrunner Arroyo Roxanne, winning by 2 ½ lengths in 29.94. CET Sashaliagotti completed the trifecta finish. < Back GRAND FINALE DERBY SECOND ROUND FIELDS Dec 22, 2020 RTSS Eve’s Angel of Floyd kennel and Hi Noon Ricochet of Nova kennel drew No. 1 boxes for the second qualifying round in the Grand Finale Derby on Wednesday at Derby Lane. Post positions were drawn on Monday. The greyhounds are among 16 athletes competing for eight spots in the 550-yard championship race on Sunday. All dogs advanced by finishing in the top four in their respective races in this past Saturday’s first round. RTSS Eve’s Angel, a 31-month-old female from a litter by Kiowa Myth and PJ Hardnottolike, starts from the inside post in Race 6 at 1:44 p.m. Trained by kennel owner Randy Floyd for owner Running To Stand Still LLC, RTSS Eve’s Angel is the second-choice 4-1 morning-line favorite. She finished second in her first qualifier. Other starters in Race 6 in post-position order: Hi Noon Recoil (Nova kennel), O Ya Flo (Lester Raines), Flying Stark (Everett Racing), LK’s Trubulee (Lashmet), Oh No Mr Bill (Abernathy), Kentucky Smith (Cal Holland) and Ventilator (Everett Racing). Hi Noon Recoil is the 5-2 morning-line top choice. < Back AD BLACK FALCON CAPTURES 2021 WHEELING WIN LEADER CROWN Stan Pawloski Jan 17, 2022 In late 2020 after making the final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes, AD Black Falcon moved to the longer 3/8th distance at Wheeling Island. When the Xtrem Hess Racing youngster won two out of his first three 3/8th races by 12 ½ and 11 ½ lengths, it was just a prelude of what was to come in 2021. Fueled by a blazing start from January into April in 2021, AD Black Falcon went on to capture the track win championship with 20 victories. A trio of sprinters – Abbi’s Gusta Win, Oshkosh Heart and JS Slush Fund – all were just a single win behind with 19 apiece. AD Black Falcon’s accomplishments earned him top greyhound honors at Wheeling Island for 2021. Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel operator Jason Hess couldn’t be prouder of his standout. “Black Falcon exceeded all of our expectations and I am so happy and proud of him for what he achieved last year (2021). I never expected him to be among the track’s win leaders,” Hess said. “To be the win leader at Wheeling is a very nice accomplishment. Just a hard-trying greyhound and I’d love to have more like him in the kennel.” A July 2018 greyhound out of SH Avatar-Hey Hey Mamma, AD Black Falcon is the first 3/8th racer to wear the win crown at Wheeling Island since WP’s Cameo in 2010. Distance greyhounds Kiowa Power Pak (2009) and TK Quick Strike (2008) also were tops in victories. Although a sprint stakes finalist in 2020, it was getting tougher for AD Black Falcon to beat top grade sprinters to the first turn, Hess noted. “It was our hope Black Falcon would be able to go to the front in 3/8th and have enough left to hold on in the stretch,” Hess said. “After his first couple starts, he proved to us he could go the distance.” In a stretch of 12 races from mid-January to early April last year, AD Black Falcon had 9 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third. He won four in a row during the hot streak, including victories by 7 ½ and 4 lengths. “Black Falcon was popping the box, he had his timing down,” Hess said. In the summer months AD Black Falcon cooled off a bit, but in late September into October he won five out of eight starts to move into contention for the win championship. “He was a streaky greyhound,” Hess said. “Sometimes his timing was off.” AD Black Falcon’s front-running style was the key to his success in 2021. In his 20 victories, he was first at the escape turn 16 times and went on to win; three times he was second at the escape turn and closed late in the race to win; and once he was fourth at the escape turn before getting up by a length at the wire. “Black Falcon really must have been feeling good the day he closed from fourth,” Hess said. “To be successful, he needed to be near the front early in his races.” Hess credited trainer Jill Spicer and her crew for playing a huge role in AD Black Falcon’s special season. “They did a great job with Black Falcon and deserve all the credit. I know he was one of Jill’s (Spicer) favorite greyhounds in the kennel and she was really happy he was the track win champion,” Hess said. AD Black Falcon, owned by Allan Ertl and Dennis Curry, was retired in December. He has been adopted by a family in North Carolina. In 84 career Wheeling races, AD Black Falcon had 30 wins, 13 seconds, 11 thirds and 4 fourths – a 70 percent mark on the pay sheet. “What stands out is the 50 percent mark on the quiniela ticket,” Hess said. “That’s hard to beat.” While AD Black Falcon topped the leader board with 20 victories, 17 other greyhounds won at least 13 races in 2021 at Wheeling Island.
