< Back RF JUANITA CAPTURES FUTURE STARS STAKE Oct 6, 2021 RF Juanita celebrated her second birthday with a victory in Iowa Greyhound Park’s Future Star stakes Saturday, Oct. 2. The red and fawn female broke well and used her strong cornering skills to post a nearly two-length victory. “She needed to get out fast to get a chance to win it,” said Jerry Cole, Superior Kennel trainer. RF Juanita, starting from the 3 box, was in a group with box neighbors BGR Big Foot Joe, of Boeckenstedt Kennel, and North End Jill, of Copper Kettle Kennel. As they neared the first turn, Juanita started to separate. “Once she got her nose in front, I started looking for the 1 (BGR Bottom Up) and 8 (BGR Twistedsista). They were the two main threats.” She powered through the corner to extend a lead she never relinquished. “She runs turns really great,” Cole said. “It obviously helped her tonight.” She posted a 31.35.Others on the board were BGR Bottoms Up, BGR Big Foot Joe and BGR Twistedsista. All are from Boeckenstedt Kennel. The rest finished as follows: KW Bugatti (Jackson Greyhounds), BGR Half Rack (Boeckenstedt Kennel), North End Jill (Copper Kettle Kennel) and Eager Erlene (Copper Kettle Kennel). The purse for the Future Stars was $30,000. The earnings by finish are: $12,000, $6,000, $3,000, $2,400, $2,100, $1,800, $1,500 and $1,200. T’s Capt Phasma, of T and T Kennel, won last year and Revin Devon, of Copper Kettle Kennel, won in 2019. Juanita has been in the money in 25 of 26 races this season. “I can’t believe what she’s been doing. She’s absolutely having a great season,” Cole said. “She’s a very special dog and she’s getting better each time. “I’m pleased at the way she’s been running,” Cole said. “And I’m happy for how well she’s doing.” Even as the 2021 season nears its end, there are more races in store for the now 2-year-old from Gable Sour Cream and RF River. RF River won the King and Queen stakes at Iowa Greyhound Park in 2017 and the Iowa Breeders’ Cup in 2016. The Iowa Breeders’ Cup is in the works, along with a couple of stakes the final day of the season on Oct. 31, the Secretary’s Choice and the Au Revoir. The Breeders’ Cup final is Sunday, Oct. 24. < Back $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC SET TO BEGIN AT WHEELING Sep 29, 2021 Wheeling Island’s featured stakes race of the year – the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic – kicks off Sunday afternoon, Oct. 3, with a field of 78 sprinters entered. Last year’s winner CG’s Penny Shoe (Abrahamson Kennel) and runner up TNT Free Falling (Patriot/Taplin Kennel) are not in this year’s stakes but two finalists from 2020 are entered – third place finisher Atascocita Birma (Code Red Kennel) and fourth place finisher Penrose Boss (Blanchard Kennel). There will be three qualifying rounds – Sunday, Oct. 3, Friday, Oct. 8 and Wednesday, Oct. 13 – before the semifinals on Sunday, Oct. 17. The championship final will be on Saturday, Oct. 23. Several greyhounds in this year’s Mountaineer Classic have stakes experience, according to local greyhound historian Robin Reed, and their accomplishments are listed below. < Back IGP KING & QUEEN STAKE Jul 7, 2021 Some days, things don’t go well until the end. That would sum up the Fourth of July for Copper Kettle trainer Jake Ungs. It took until the final of Iowa Greyhound Park’s King and Queen stakes to have a good day. “None of our dogs were running very well today,” Ungs said. “All of a sudden Big Iron made the day.” KB’s Big Iron grabbed an early lead and wasn’t threatened to claim the championship. He posted a 31.66 for a 5½-length victory over JW Montego. “He had a fabulous break,” said co-owner Joe Fusaro. “He hit the lid and was out first. I thought he had a chance.” Fusaro owns Big Iron with Joe Frenette. BGR Wide Open, of Boeckenstedt Kennel, broke even with Big Iron, who had the four box. But Big Iron, from Lonesome Cry and Boc’s Hall Baby, held a lead entering the first corner. Wide Open slid out a bit and slowed the field, providing an edge for Big Iron. JW Montego, of Jackson Greyhounds, tried to close the gap and got within four lengths, but Big Iron hit the gas and cruised to the title. “The four box is what we wanted,” Ungs said. “He’s all about running his race and hitting the lid. He likes the middle.” Big Iron almost didn’t make the field. “We have lots of A’s,” Ungs said. “He was technically my last king entry. Everyone (in the kennel) is equally matched.” RF Juanita, of Superior Kennel, showed and Vino Val, of Copper Kettle, closed into fourth. Juanita was second in qualifying in the queen’s side. Vino Val was tied for second in king’s qualifying. Big Iron paid $26.60,$12.80 and $8.40. He was fourth in the king’s bracket qualifying, and Montego was tied for second. The top qualifier in the King’s bracket, KW Carlo Gambino, of Jackson Greyhounds, was fifth. Superior Bonnie, of Superior Kennel, was top seed in the Queen’s bracket. She was seventh. The rest of the field’s finishes were: BGR Wide Open, sixth, and JD Tonic, of Stidham & Brindle Kennel, eighth. The purse was $30,000, with $12,000 to the winner, $6,000 to the runner-up and $3,000 to third. Fourth place earned $2,400, fifth $,2100, sixth, $1,800, seventh, $1,500 and eighth, $1,200. The win tied the stakes series with the queens. Both have 18 victories through the years. Gonz Dandelion, of T&T Kennel, a king, won last year. < Back DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE Jul 27, 2020 Since 2004, the Abernathy brand has failed to appear on the proverbial kennel championship trophy at Derby Lane. Kennel owners Jim and Kayruth Abernathy came close three times during those 27 meets – finishing second three times (2019, 2015, 2014). As Derby Lane’s July-to-December meet winds down its first month this week, the Abernathys have put themselves in position to make history. Entering Monday’s 15-race performance, Abernathy kennel parlayed a big week to move into second place in the win standings. After recording a meet-tying 16 victories in the previous week, Abernathy trails only reigning champion Lester Raines, 50-42, in the win race. Abernathy and Lester Raines are the only kennels to collect 16 wins so far in a calendar week during the meet. Lester Raines won 16 races on July 6-11. Abernathy and Capabal were the lone kennels to notch at least one victory on all seven performances. Abernathy ended the week the way it started: getting four wins on the first and final cards. Six of Abernathy’s winners paid double-digits to win, including the $31.40 returned by Grade A athlete Charlotte York on Wednesday. That victory represented the first career Grade A win by Charlotte York from 61 starts. The 2-1/2-year old daughter of Pat C Clement and Krazy Kara was the longest shot on the board at 14-1 odds in the 550-yard race. She won in box-to-wire fashion by 2-1/2 lengths in 31.08 seconds for owner Steve Sarras. Abernathy’s 16 winners produced an average payout of $10.20 for a $2 win ticket. Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 39 victories, followed by Capabal at 38, and Everett Racing at 37. < Back NOVA KENNEL SETS DERBY LANE RECORD Mar 17, 2020 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – It began with the night’s closest finish – Deco All Redd’s first career win by a nose. By the end of the night, Nova kennel wound up being second to none. For the first time in modern-day history, a Derby Lane operation won eight races on a single program. Nova’s accomplishment on this past Saturday’s evening performance covered all five graded levels, highlighted by wins with its first six starters. Few could see the record-setting effort by Nova coming. Entering the night’s 15-race program, Nova ranked 12th among 14 kennels with 48 wins. Kennel owner Hans Limmer had 11 greyhounds entered - 10 in 550-yard sprints – and most of them shined when the lights came on under the guidance of trainer Missy Kubitz. Deco All Redd’s come-from-behind win in Race 2, a Grade M sprint, was the first of six victories in consecutive races for Nova. Deco All Redd, competing in his fifth lifetime race, paid $6.40 to win – one of five Nova favorites to prevail on the program. Another favorite, Hi Noon Ruger, followed with a 5-1/2-length win at Grade C and paid $5.20. Turbo Finley then pulled off a two-length triumph at Grade B and returned $11.40. Dancin Lee continued the trend with a two-length victory at Grade D in Race 5, paying $9.20. Finish Him then picked up his first career Grade A win by 2-1/2 lengths and returned $12.80. Send Overnight extended Nova’s win streak in Race 7 with a half-length triumph at Grade D, paying $6.40 as the favorite. Nova suffered its first loss in Race 8, but Deco Gatling Gun put the kennel back in the winner’s circle in the following race with an eight-length Grade A romp, returning $5.60 as the favorite. Nova then had three more opportunities to set the modern-day mark, and it took the final one to pull off the feat. After losing Races 10 and 12, Turbo Ferris rallied for a 3-1/2-length Grade C win in Race 14 – paying $4.20 as the favorite – to give Nova a page in Derby Lane’s record book. Edward Gardner, Robert Hardison and David Hays each owned two of the winners, while Charles Haliburton III and Peter Limmer each were owners of a winner. Only two kennels in modern-day history had won seven races in one performance. Three-time defending kennel champion Everett Racing was the most recent operation to win seven, that coming on June 22, 2019. Filipelli & O’Donnell kennel was the previous one with seven victories on June 16, 2009. LANDMARK VICTORY . All-America first-team sprinter LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel reached his 75th career win Monday with a four-length Grade A victory at Derby Lane. Trained by Ken Deacon for breeders and kennel operators John and Jill Lashmet of Eaton, Colo., LK’s Crush N It attained his milestone victory in start No. 106.
