< Back DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE Jul 27, 2020 Since 2004, the Abernathy brand has failed to appear on the proverbial kennel championship trophy at Derby Lane. Kennel owners Jim and Kayruth Abernathy came close three times during those 27 meets – finishing second three times (2019, 2015, 2014). As Derby Lane’s July-to-December meet winds down its first month this week, the Abernathys have put themselves in position to make history. Entering Monday’s 15-race performance, Abernathy kennel parlayed a big week to move into second place in the win standings. After recording a meet-tying 16 victories in the previous week, Abernathy trails only reigning champion Lester Raines, 50-42, in the win race. Abernathy and Lester Raines are the only kennels to collect 16 wins so far in a calendar week during the meet. Lester Raines won 16 races on July 6-11. Abernathy and Capabal were the lone kennels to notch at least one victory on all seven performances. Abernathy ended the week the way it started: getting four wins on the first and final cards. Six of Abernathy’s winners paid double-digits to win, including the $31.40 returned by Grade A athlete Charlotte York on Wednesday. That victory represented the first career Grade A win by Charlotte York from 61 starts. The 2-1/2-year old daughter of Pat C Clement and Krazy Kara was the longest shot on the board at 14-1 odds in the 550-yard race. She won in box-to-wire fashion by 2-1/2 lengths in 31.08 seconds for owner Steve Sarras. Abernathy’s 16 winners produced an average payout of $10.20 for a $2 win ticket. Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 39 victories, followed by Capabal at 38, and Everett Racing at 37. < Back 2023 WVGOBA JUVENILE SPRINT STAKE Patricia Saul Mar 27, 2023 GF Straight One, out of Heather Lomax Kennel, captured the title of the 2023 $35,000 WVGOBA Juvenile Sprint Saturday evening at Tri-State. During the qualifying rounds, GF Straight One had three straight wins and placed 5th, totaling 36 points to qualify. Racing from the 1 box, GF Straight One broke fast for the early lead and never looked back to achieve his box-to-wire win in 30.32 seconds. With GF Straight One breaking on top and no dog going to the rail, it left a lot of room for the slow breaking 2 CET Negan. While CET Negan got to the first turn 6th, he stayed on the rail, and after a bit of bumping of some of the other dogs, he found himself 2nd heading down the backstretch and finishing a closing 2nd. The 7 CET Daryl, while last early on, stayed on the outside and out of trouble in the early going. He started making a long steady drive down the backstretch and kept picking off dogs one by one. CET Daryl finished a closing 3rd by 3 1/2 lengths. Rounding out the order of finish were GLS Daisy Dot (JS Kennels), 4th; GF Steel Horse (Heather Lomax), 5th; JA’s Henry Ford (Abrahamson), 6th; JA’s Dupont (Abrahamson), 7th; and Coach Hatfield (Double G), 8th. < Back GREYHOUNDS RACE INTO YOUR HEART IN NO TIME FLAT Stan Pawloski Feb 10, 2020 On the racetrack, greyhounds are a picture of beauty, grace, determination, speed – doing what they are born to do and love to do – run. Off the track in retirement, they make exceptional pets – easy to fall in love with in a heartbeat. They are quiet, well-mannered, affectionate, very easy to live with and provide great companionship. Since 2010, the Wheeling Island Greyhound Adoption Center has facilitated in the adoption of more than 2,700 greyhounds. The majority are from Wheeling Island with others from Tri-State Greyhound Park, West Virginia breeding farms and out-of-state transfers. “Greyhounds make wonderful pets and, more often than not, transition to retired life with ease. They can be anywhere on the continuum from a lazy couch potato to service, mobility or agility dogs. As typical soft dogs who have been surrounded by humans their entire life, greyhounds aim to please,” Deb Reed, Wheeling Island adoption coordinator, said. “They have as many different personalities as there are shades of greyhounds – from shyness to extreme confidence. These aren’t cookie cutter personality dogs and in all my years of working with greyhounds, I have yet to find two that are the same.” Reed has been around greyhounds for 20 years, first working in the family racing kennel at age 16. “Greyhound racing is the fulfillment of a life-long passion. My step-father, my husband and I are licensed trainers. I have tried to find other employment at times, but this is my place,” Reed noted. “Greyhounds, from raising to racing to retirement, are my life. My employment in the adoption center allows me to continue the kennel care to ensure these athletes receive and retire to the best homes possible.” The process of adopting a greyhound at Wheeling Island involves several steps, including an application form, telephone interview and home visit. The adoption fee is $300, which covers the cost of spay/neuter, update on any shots and blood testing,” Reed said. “While the greyhounds are at the adoption kennel, they receive regular deworming, flea and tick medication.” The onsite adoption kennel has space for 48 greyhounds and is usually at full capacity, Reed said. “We don’t have enough greyhounds to meet the adoption demand. While we will adopt to local individuals in the Wheeling area who meet the requirements, most of our greyhounds go to responsible adoption groups we work with,” Reed said. “Our youngest greyhound adopted was 3 months old and our oldest may have been close to 10 years old.” The Wheeling Island Greyhound Adoption Center holds weekly meet and greet sessions on the first floor of the racetrack. The sessions are held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. “The public is welcome to come and meet real retired racing greyhounds,” Reed said. “We also provide education targeting the misinformation the public may have heard from anti-racing groups.” Monetary donations in any amount are greatly appreciated. < Back FLORENTINE CAPTURES 2022 WHEELING WIN LEADER CROWN Stan Pawloski Jan 24, 2023 Sprint star Rob Gronkowski was in the national spotlight in 2013-14, earning All-American honors both years and the captaincy of the 2013 team while racing at Palm Beach and Southland. Now, one of his offspring, Florentine, is making headlines at Wheeling Island. In Florentine’s first full season of racing in 2022, the sprinter captured the Wheeling track win championship with 22 victories to earn top greyhound honors. Oshkosh Edward was runner up with 20 wins while Seven Summers and Xtrem Chicken both posted 19 victories. Florentine, a February 2020 greyhound out of Rob Gronkowski-PJ Sour Diesel, races out of the Steve Sarras Kennel at Wheeling. Both Florentine and Rob Gronkowski are owned by Sarras. “When Florentine broke in at Wheeling (late 2021), I thought she had the potential to be a really nice Grade AA greyhound. As for being the track win leader, we didn’t start paying attention until late in the season when she was among the leaders,” Sarras said. “She’s the first win leader I have ever had and being a daughter of Gronk, the best greyhound I have ever owned, makes it even more special. To win 22 races against the level of competition at Wheeling is quite an accomplishment. I am so proud of her.” Florentine started the 2022 campaign rather slowly – her fourth win of the year didn’t come until mid-April. She had two victories in January, none in February, one in March and her fourth on April 14. In late April through early June, Florentine caught fire. The speedster captured seven out of nine Grade AA races, including five in a row at one point. “She can be a streaky greyhound. Florentine locked horns with a lot of the other win leaders in some of her races, so to post five straight victories was pretty impressive,” Sarras said. It was the first of three hot streaks Florentine had in 2022. In late August into September, she won four out of five Grade AA trips and during a stretch in October through early December, she had 5 wins and 5 seconds in 12 Grade AA races. The late surge put Florentine atop the win leaderboard. Like her father, Rob Gronkowski, Florentine’s game is getting into her races quickly. “She’s not the greatest breaker but has a tremendous rush to the corner. Her biggest strength is her rush. All she needs is a clean lane to the first turn,” Sarras said. “Gronk could break last in a race, but still rush to the top by the first turn. Gronk had and Florentine has a lot of grit.” Sarras prefers Florentine draw an outside post. “Although she can rush from any hole with an opening, I like her on the outside where nothing can slash down on her,” Sarras said. “She gives everything she has and sometimes when she exerts so much energy going to the first turn, she can come up a little short in the stretch.” In addition to her speed, Florentine possesses track sense and desire. “She’s a smart greyhound who picks and chooses her spots. To win that many races, you got to have racing smarts as well as talent and luck,” Sarras said. “She’s has a lot of desire. She knows when it’s race time and she lives for the moment.” Florentine started out 2023 with a bang, winning her first three starts by 5, 3 ½ and 2 ½ lengths. While Florentine topped the leader board with 22 victories, 19 other greyhounds won at least 12 races in 2022 at Wheeling Island. < Back CINDERELLA "STRIDES" INTO "GREYT 8" OF HOUND MADNESS Shane Bolender Mar 23, 2021 Fifty-six greyhounds have been eliminated from the “Hound Madness” Stakes, and while there were plenty of upsets in the opening round (sound familiar with what is going on with the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament?), after the dust settled from the “Sleek 16” round on Monday, we were left with one true “Cinderella”. XM STRIDE N (T and T Kennel) will face his toughest test in the South Regional Finals this Saturday when he goes head’s up against the #3 seeded ALADDIN (A Ray Kennel), scheduled for the 13th race on that card. The 74 pound black male is proving he might not be overmatched at all, as he won his last two rounds, both of which ALADDIN appeared, catching the red male twice in consecutive races. There is little doubt ALADDIN will likely get the lead once again in this race, but the only question is whether he can hang on this time against a tough closer. History says it will be tough to do. The rest of the regions have mostly favorites involved, especially in the West Regional Finals. It will be a battle of kennelmates as Natalie Looper trained AIR ACE (#1 seed) will face off against #3 seed PAT C RAM ROD for the right to advance to the Furry Four. Much like the South Region, PAT C RAM ROD has yet to lose a race in the “Hound Madness” yet (3 straight victories overall) and has pulled away from AIR ACE in the past two rounds of action. The early lead will be key in this race, as both possess enough late speed to likely hold the other one off at the wire. Of all the regions, this one might be the best overall match up race of the four and is slated for race 3 on the Saturday card. At first glance, the Midwest Regional Final looks to be an easy victory set up for another undefeated greyhound in this tournament, #1 seed CRAIGIE DELEGATE (Lester Raines Kennel). This 69 pound male has won 9 of 11 races on the season and five of his last six. His rival for this Saturday’s race card will be TMC’S SWEETCRAIG (Darren Henry Kennel), a six seed who has a win and two second place finishes (both to CRAIGIE DELEGATE) so far in this stakes event. Even though the two second place finishes have been close races, SWEETCRAIG is not known as a sharp breaker and his late speed seems to kick in a little too late to catch a greyhound of DELEGATE’S speed. If he can improve on that early foot, even modestly, it will make for an interesting finish to the sixth race that day. The East Regional Final will be the eighth race on the performance and feature #2 seed JS KEEPHOPEALIVE (Lester Raines Kennel), who just got caught at the wire in the opening round to finish third by a head (still enough to advance) otherwise she would come into this race undefeated overall. This 60 pound bullet probably has the best rush to the turn of the eight greyhounds remaining, but can be caught near the wire by the right type of greyhound. ELIZA FRASER (Gloria Dorsey) comes into the race as the #5 seed in the region and has yet to win a race, but has two second place efforts in her last two starts (both to JS KEEPHOPEALIVE and both by 1 ½ lengths). This race is the battle of the females, insuring that at least one female will reach the Furry Four round a week from Friday. Each of the four match races will feature win wagering only. < Back FF Vespa captures 2025 win crown, Top Greyhound honors Stan Pawloski Jan 19, 2026 FF Vespa opened his racing career at Wheeling Island in November 2023 with four straight victories in Maiden and Grades D, C and B by a combined 35 ½ lengths. The early speedster looked like a force to be reckoned with around the 5/16th sprint course. Halfway through the 2024 racing season, however, FF Vespa only had five victories on his resume for the year. The second half was a different story as the youngster exploded for 14 wins – his 19 total victories in 2024 placed him third on the track leaderboard. It was just a prelude to what was to come in 2025. Last year, the sprint star came out of the box firing as he captured 10 out of his first 12 Grade AA races. FF Vespa went on to post a track-leading 28 wins on the year to earn Top Greyhound honors in 2025 at Wheeling Island. FF Vespa races out of the Code Red Kennel, owned by Joe Fusaro and Philip Carpenter and trained by Tom Engle. Fusaro and Carpenter are ecstatic and so proud of what FF’s Vespa achieved during the 2025 racing season at Wheeling Island. “We are thrilled to be the owners of the track win champion,” Fusaro said. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment for both Phil (Carpenter) and myself.” Carpenter added, “Vespa has been a joy to own and a phenomenal greyhound to watch over the last two years. He always gives an honest effort.” After FF Vespa finished strong to end the 2024 season, Fusaro thought something magical might be in the works for this past year. “We had high expectations for Vespa when the year started as he was hot when 2024 ended and he had just made the 2024 National Greyhound Association All-Star Team,” Fusaro said. “We didn’t expect a track win champion, but we knew he could be in contention.” In addition to FF Vespa’s 28 wins last year, the April 2022 greyhound out of Atascocita Gray-FF Biscayne had 13 seconds, 5 thirds and 3 fourths in 61 starts. He had a 6-race and a 4-race win streak, an 82 percent mark on the superfecta ticket and a 77 percent trifecta finish. “Vespa’s mother, FF Biscayne, was a stakes winning racer for me at multiple tracks,” Fusaro said. “She has produced many Grade AA offspring, but Vespa is the best racer of the group.” The key to FF Vespa’s success is getting out of the box and into his races quickly. “Vespa is at his best when he breaks well because he has a tremendous power rush to the first turn which can make him a dominant force when coupled with a good break,” Fusaro noted. “He was the most dominant during January and February but continued strong throughout the year. When he’s sharp with his break, he gets hot because he busts out to big leads against his competitors.” The early speedster posted a number of impressive victories in 2025 – by 8 ½, 8, 7 ½, 6, 5 ½, 5 (three times), 4 ½ and 4 (twice) lengths. Engle called Vespa a dream greyhound. “It’s been great running him the last two years,” Engle said. “Greyhounds like him don’t come around very often.” FF Vespa’s 28 wins were the most at Wheeling Island since GF La Duena captured 32 races in 2019. All-Americans AMF Ex President in 2011 and CTW Bronze Drake in 2012 had 28 wins. Going into the 2026 racing season at Wheeling Island, FF Vespa had posted an impressive 51 career victories. “Vespa has had an amazing career and is not yet 4 years old. When Vespa arrived in the kennel as a puppy I received a call from his trainer, Tom Engle,” Fusaro recalled. “Tom said ‘he is an alpha male in the turnout pen and just carries himself in a unique way. In my experience, greyhounds like this are usually very fast.’” “Tom (Engle) had not even seen Vespa race at the time of the call,” Fusaro said. “Tom has never said that to me about any other greyhound before or after that call and I have raced greyhounds with him for more than 12 years.” In 126 career races entering 2026, FF Vespa had 51 wins, 23 seconds, 17 thirds and 8 fourths. Two of FF Vespa’s littermates are competing at Wheeling Island in Grade A-AA – FF Vito Corleone and FF Vanguard. While FF Vespa topped the leader board with 28 victories, 23 other greyhounds won at least 13 races in 2025 at Wheeling Island.
