Racing out of the Steve Sarras Kennel and trained by Jay Falcone, CET Dirty Dan rushed to an early lead from the seven box in the final – opening up a 3-length lead on RS’s Dark Night (Lester Raines Kennel) down the backstretch. Coming home, RS’s Dark Night narrowed the gap, but CET Dirty Dan had enough in the tank to take the stakes crown by a neck in 29.81. CET Marlin (Imark Kennel) closed in the stretch to take third place as CET Barracuda (Imark Kennel) settled for fourth. Completing the order of finish were CET Tiger Boy (Steve Sarras Kennel), fifth; CET Fernando (Imark Kennel), sixth; RS’s Railhauler (Lester Raines Kennel), seventh; and RS’s Dunkindylan (Lester Raines Kennel), eighth. < Back A ROSY PICTURE FOR DERBY LANE Sep 8, 2020 Things came up roses for Derby Lane on Kentucky Derby day. The West Florida greyhound track enjoyed the best parimutuel handle on its product in more than two years this past Saturday, when fans watched Authentic upset heavy favorite Tiz the Law via simulcast to give trainer Bob Baffert a record-tying sixth Kentucky Derby win at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. A total of $428,605 was wagered on Derby Lane’s 15-race matinee program with a meet-high 2,443 patrons in attendance. The handle represented a 19.51-percent increase from the previous Kentucky Derby day of $358,636 on May 4, 2019. It was Derby Lane’s best handle since the matinee performance on May 5, 2018, which also featured the Kentucky Derby simulcast. On that afternoon, patrons wagered $480,955 on the Derby Lane product in front of a crowd of 5,109. Derby Lane’s attendance for its Saturday matinee was 48.2 percent lower than the 2019 Kentucky Derby day total of 4,713, but that was expected with the safety precautions taken because of the coronavirus pandemic. Track security staff constantly toured the facility to ensure patrons wore masks. In the Derby Club, every other dining table was made available to ensure a six-foot distance. Derby Lane also opened up more parimutuel wagering stations. Some tellers wore festive Kentucky Derby shirts, and fans came attired with their personal Run for the Roses hats. On the track, Abernathy kennel stood out with four victories as eight of the 14 operations recorded at least one win. Abernathy kennel began Labor Day in a three-way tie for second place in the competitive Derby Lane win standings with Capabal and Nova, each with 98. Three-time kennel champion Everett Racing forged to the top of the group at 99 following a four-win performance on Saturday evening, capping a 12-win week. < Back WHEELING KENNEL, WIN LEADER RACES TIGHT Stan Pawloski Aug 12, 2020 As the second half of the abbreviated 2020 racing season kicks in gear at Wheeling Island, there is a logjam atop the track’s kennel standings and win leaders. The racetrack reopened June 5 after a 12-week shutdown ordered by the state due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). It is believed to be the longest the racetrack has been shut down since the flood of 1996 when the operation was closed from mid-January until March 1. Through Sunday, Aug. 9 races, the top four kennels from 2019 once again occupy the top four spots in the standings this year although in a different order. Lester Raines holds the top spot with 205 victories on the year following closely by Jacobs Racing with 201 wins and defending champion Blanchard with 197 victories. Patriot/Taplin is fourth with 188 wins while rounding out the top five is Charter with 169. Sitting atop the track win leader board is sprinter JS Drinkmepretty (Lester Raines) with 10 victories in 20 starts – a 50 percent win percentage. Each of her victories have come against Grade AA competition. JS Drinkmepretty was third in wins last year with 19. Two greyhounds have posted nine wins each this year – CTW Tira Misu (Patriot/Taplin) and CTW Lotus Flower (Imark). With eight victories apiece are JSK Roulette (Jacobs Racing), WW Slick Simon (Wayne Ward), ZB Tremonti (Lester Raines), BGR Call Me Hank (Brad Boeckenstedt) and WW Spend A Lot (Wayne Ward). Heading into the Wednesday, Sept. 14, second round, CET Barracuda, CET Fernando and CET Marlin have each accumulated 15 points on the strength of their first-round victories to top the leader board. The semi-finals are set for Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18, and the stake final is scheduled for the Friday, Sept. 23, matinee card. Capsule looks at the first-round races follow: CET Barracuda took the early lead and never looked back in winning by 1 ½ lengths in 29.69. CET Moto Moto finished second while LFR Lucky Clover got up for third. CET Fernando rocketed to a commanding early lead and never challenged in posting a 7 ½-length win in 29.76.
