- 2023 WVGOBA JUVENILE SPRINT STAKE | National Greyhound
< Back 2023 WVGOBA JUVENILE SPRINT STAKE Patricia Saul Mar 27, 2023 GF Straight One, out of Heather Lomax Kennel, captured the title of the 2023 $35,000 WVGOBA Juvenile Sprint Saturday evening at Tri-State. During the qualifying rounds, GF Straight One had three straight wins and placed 5th, totaling 36 points to qualify. Racing from the 1 box, GF Straight One broke fast for the early lead and never looked back to achieve his box-to-wire win in 30.32 seconds. With GF Straight One breaking on top and no dog going to the rail, it left a lot of room for the slow breaking 2 CET Negan. While CET Negan got to the first turn 6th, he stayed on the rail, and after a bit of bumping of some of the other dogs, he found himself 2nd heading down the backstretch and finishing a closing 2nd. The 7 CET Daryl, while last early on, stayed on the outside and out of trouble in the early going. He started making a long steady drive down the backstretch and kept picking off dogs one by one. CET Daryl finished a closing 3rd by 3 1/2 lengths. Rounding out the order of finish were GLS Daisy Dot (JS Kennels), 4th; GF Steel Horse (Heather Lomax), 5th; JA’s Henry Ford (Abrahamson), 6th; JA’s Dupont (Abrahamson), 7th; and Coach Hatfield (Double G), 8th. GF Straight One, out of Dodgem By Design and Imark Red, is owned by Thomas M or Paulin Salem and trained by Betty Lomax. Previous Next
- WHEELING YEAR IN REVIEW: 2021 HANDLES SOAR, TRACK HIGHLIGHTS | National Greyhound
< Back WHEELING YEAR IN REVIEW: 2021 HANDLES SOAR, TRACK HIGHLIGHTS Stan Pawloski Jan 18, 2022 The 2021 greyhound racing season at Wheeling Island produced record handles following the closure of all the Florida racetracks at the end of 2020. Wheeling Island handled $237 million on greyhound racing in 2021 compared to a handle of $75 million in 2019 (last full season numbers available) – a 212 percent increase. In 2020, the track was closed for three months due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With a 20-race card in 2021, weekend handles surpassing a million dollars a program was commonplace as were $5 million handles a week. The exciting and fun-filled 2021 season had numerous highlights on the track, including the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic, two West Virginia bred stake events, a record-tying performance and win streaks which generated interest. In addition, several youngsters with promising futures opened their careers and the track experienced an influx of racers from other operations – notably the Florida tracks and Iowa late in the year. Top greyhound honors went to Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s AD Black Falcon, who posted 20 victories. Next in line with 19 wins each were Jacobs Racing Kennel’s Abbi’s Gusta Win, Lester Raines Kennel’s JS Slush Fund and Charter Kennel’s Oshkosh Heart. The Lester Raines Kennel, trained by Joel Roden, captured the 2021 kennel championship – making it back-to-back crowns. It was Raines’ third title in the last four years. In the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic in late October, Lester Raines Kennel’s Teaser’s Tickle took charge early and never looked back in winning the track’s featured stakes event by 2 ½ lengths in 29.58. Abbi’s Eagle (Jacobs Racing Kennel) took runner up honors while Penrose Boss (Blanchard Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final order of finish were RS’s Dark Night (Lester Raines Kennel), fourth; Ding Dong Ditch (Imark Kennel), fifth; Abbi’s Frontman (Jacobs Racing Kennel), sixth; CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel), seventh; and Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), eighth. Teaser’s Tickle made track history in winning the Mountaineer Classic. Since the track opened in 1976, no other greyhound had ever captured a major stakes championship in just 14 career races. The old mark was held by Large Lee, who won the 2008 Firecracker Sprint in his 15th career trip. It was a remarkable run to the stakes crown for Teaser’s Tickle as the September 2019 greyhound out of Bella Infrared-Beautiful Tease entered the qualifying rounds without a single Grade AA race under his belt. After a seventh in the first round, Teaser’s Tickle romped to three straight wins by a combined 23 lengths to earn a spot in the final. In the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile in September, Lester Raines Kennel’s RS’s Dark Night rocketed by the leaders on the backstretch before pulling away to a 5 ½-length victory in 29.81. JA’s Croft (Code Red Kennel) took runner up honors while Mac’s New York (A Ray Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final finish were RS’s Blue Heaven (Lester Raines Kennel), fourth; Mac’s Zhivago (A Ray Kennel), fifth; RS’s Prime Time (Lester Raines Kennel), sixth; Coach Wonder (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), seventh; and Mac’s Evita (A Ray Kennel), eighth. In the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship in November, Lester Raines Kennel’s RS’s Prime Time dominated the field in the final – finishing 5 lengths ahead of runner up CET Dirty Gurly (Steve Sarras Kennel) while JA’s Moon Man (Code Red Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the Keystone final finish were Mac’s Choo (A Ray), fourth; Mac’s Zhivago (A Ray), fifth; GLS Fast Food (Jacobs Racing), sixth; Macs Chapman (A Ray), seventh; and RS’s Blue Heaven (Lester Raines), eighth. The longest winning streak during the 2021 racing season was five in a row by six greyhounds – Abbi’s Gusta Win (Jacobs Racing Kennel), Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), O Ya Trisha (Lester Raines Kennel), Oshkosh Heart (Charter Kennel), Imark Daria (Imark Kennel) and RS Big D (Lester Raines Kennel). Two greyhounds posted four straight wins twice in 2021 – O Ya Trisha (Lester Raines Kennel) and CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel). Other racers with four victories in a row were AD Black Falcon (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel), BO’s Owen (Blanchard Kennel), Easi Lil Charlie (Blanchard Kennel), FGF Ron Weasley (Charter Kennel), JS Wanna Bee (Lester Raines Kennel), JS Slush Fund (Lester Raines Kennel), JS In The Money (Rangel Kennel), KB’s Copy Kat (Charter Kennel), LK’s Sheridan (Steve Sarras Kennel), Pat C Paul (Rangel Kennel), Super Ollie (Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel) and Teaser’s Tickle (Lester Raines Kennel). The track’s 330-yard record time of 16.74, held since December 2015 by Lester Raines Kennel’s Atascocita Santo, was tied by Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s UBX Crackereater in November. UBX Crackereater, a January 2019 greyhound out of SH Avatar-Beautiful Tease, is owned by Cheyenne Criswell and Jason Hess. Previous Next
- CET DIRTY DILLY REPEATS IN RURAL RUBE, FGF DAVYCROCKETT SELECTED FOR FLASHY SIR IN 2022 AWARDS | National Greyhound
< Back CET DIRTY DILLY REPEATS IN RURAL RUBE, FGF DAVYCROCKETT SELECTED FOR FLASHY SIR IN 2022 AWARDS Jim Gartland Feb 21, 2023 A West Virginia speedster and a Southland distance star have been chosen as recipient's of the NGA’s annual Awards; CET Dirty Dilly returns as the repeat winner of the Rural Rube and Southland distance star, FGF Davycrocket t has captured the Flashy Sir. With no major stakes scheduled in 2022, the NGA awards took on a different look and voting method but, no doubt, the two winners were obvious selections. A 2018 daughter of SH Avatar-CET Dirty Nicki , CET Dirty Dilly continued right where she left off in 2021, tearing up the competition at Tri State on her way to a North American leading 40 wins on the year. Three different times during the season, she would go on seven race win streaks and would end the year on December 30th with an impressive ten length romp. She would finish out of the trifecta only once in all of her 48 starts finishing 7th in a race back in October where she encountered early trouble. She was also voted Captain of the All American team by the NGA. Owned and raced by Carl Tomblin II, Dilly was, obviously, the most consistent sprinter in the land over the past year. She won her first start in January and would win 39 more times including that last start in December. Dilly would finish the year with a 48-40-3-4-0 record, missing the pay sheet only once the entire year! A much deserved award for this fabulous sprinter. Congratulations to Carl Tomblin and all the connections of CET Dirty Dilly . FGF Davycrockett was a unanimous choice for the Flashy Sir award finishing the year as the win and money leader at Southland running strictly distance races. Crockett is a July 2019 son of Trent Lee-FGF Jamboree and was a Southland distance star for the Charter Kennel. Racing exclusively at 660 and 703 yards, Crockett was equally tough at either distance. His first win of the year came in January at 703 yards and his last at 660 yards in December. In between he would miss the pay sheet only five times over the course of the year. He finished with a 45-18-9-5-8 record and earned well over $300,000 for his efforts. Crockett , who was also named to the 2022 All American team, was raised and is owned by Kevin Fulton. Congratulations to FGF Davycrockett and all his connections! The 52nd Annual NGA Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards will be presented at the awards ceremonies program at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Thursday night, April 27, during the NGA's Spring Meet. - DECO COLT GUN SELDOM MISFIRES | National Greyhound
< Back DECO COLT GUN SELDOM MISFIRES Aug 24, 2020 Soon after the starting box opens, Deco Colt Gun usually has his work cut out. “He doesn’t get the break from the box, and he doesn’t have the rush to the turn like he used to,’’ Nova kennel manager and trainer Missy Kubitz said. “But once he gets around the turn and gets out, he drives hard.’’ Deco Colt Gun doesn’t shoot blanks very often. He is competitive, confident and consistent. For the past two years, the 550-yard specialist has been among the best Derby Lane has to offer. Deco Colt Gun is a lifetime winner of half his races (43 victories from 86 starts), and possesses an in-the-money record of 86 percent with finishes of fourth place or better. “He hasn’t dropped out of Grade A, and he’s very competitive,’’ Kubitz said. The 73-pound sprinter won his first four races this month before finishing third this past Saturday. Deco Colt Gun showed ability in his first career race at Gulf Greyhound Park in La Marque, Texas, where he has been twice before returning each time to Derby Lane. He broke first on that January 2019 day and led all the way in the 550-yard race for a 2-1/2-length victory at 9-1 odds. That was only one of 16 times that Deco Colt Gun has left the starting box first among his rivals. Excelling at Derby Lane is what the David Hays-owned greyhound does best. Forty-one of his lifetime victories have been at the Florida West Coast track, including 38 at either Grade A or against stakes competition. Deco Colt Gun, a 3-year-old son of Deco Glen Lee and Tiger Girl, also has reached the finals in three of four stakes appearances - all in 2019. He was third in the $8,000 T.L. Weaver Memorial Challenge, sixth in the $50,000 Husker Magic Fall Sprint, and seventh in the $10,000 Howl-O-Ween. In each stakes sprint, Deco Colt Gun was defeated by an All-America first-team selection: LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel (twice) and Flying Givenchy of Everett Racing kennel. His career-best clocking on Derby Lane’s 550-yard course is 30.23 seconds in May 2019. Deco Colt Gun’s resume includes a pair of five-race win streaks and three four-race win streaks. “He’s a good boy and he loves to race,’’ Kubitz said. “He’s changed in the kennel, too. “He used to be real quiet and never said a peep . . . . You didn’t even know he was there. Now, since we’ve been shut down (by the coronavirus pandemic from March 20 to May 7) and started racing again, he’s ripping up his rug and chewing on the water can. “He’s a mess now. I think it’s because he got cabin fever. He’s so glad to be back racing.’’ The success of Deco Colt Gun and other Nova athletes has kennel owner Hans Limmer of St. Petersburg and son Peter Limmer of Rosebud, Texas, in contention for a kennel meet championship. Entering this week, Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 80 victories - trailing reigning titlist Lester Raines (84) and Capabal (83). Nova’s last title came in the July-to-December meet in 2016. Nova is the meet leader in Grade A wins by a 35-18 margin over Lashmet kennel. “I win a lot of races on the love that I have for (the dogs),’’ Kubitz said. “I show up and (the dogs) give it back to me. I’ve always thought that I win a lot of races with the love. “Hans and Peter are real happy with how the dogs are performing. Peter laughs and jokes about me being the Queen of the (Grade) A wins, and the King of the (Grade) B wins, because when we first opened back up (from the pandemic), I was winning all the B’s and then of course, the dogs go to A and they’re winning.’’ Previous Next
