< Back CET BARRACUDA WINS WVGOBA JUVENILE Stan Pawloski Sep 13, 2022 Favorite CET Barracuda completed a sweep of the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile by capturing the championship final Friday afternoon, Sept. 23, at Wheeling Island. Racing out of the Imark Kennel and trained by DiAnn Derr, CET Barracuda rolled through the qualifying round races with three straight victories by a combined 12 ½ lengths. The sprinter was the only greyhound to make it through the early rounds undefeated. In the final, CET Barracuda broke a close second to Arroyo Roxanne. The pair raced side-by-side around the first turn and down the backstretch before CET Barracuda took control near the far turn. CET Barracuda held off a fast-closing CET Tiger Boy (Steve Sarras Kennel) in the homestretch – winning by a length in 30.24. Arroyo Roxanne (Code Red Kennel) settled for third. Completing the order of finish were CET Sashaligotti (Steve Sarras Kennel), fourth; CET Moto Moto (Steve Sarras Kennel), fifth; CET Fernando (Imark Kennel), sixth; CET Marlin (Imark Kennel), seventh; and Mac’s Monreaux (A Ray Kennel), eighth. < Back SPRINT STAR CET DIRTY DILLY CAPTURES CAREER VICTORY NO. 100 Stan Pawloski Mar 27, 2023 The last two years, 2021-22, CET Dirty Dilly was voted captain of the All-America first team. On top of those prestigious honors, the Tri-State Greyhound Park star captured the Rural Rube Award as the nation’s top sprinter for the second year in a row and was the national win leader both seasons. This year, CET Dirty Dilly joined an elite group – greyhounds with 100 career victories. When the sprint sensation posted a box-to-wire victory in mid-March at Tri-State, she became only the 52nd greyhound in racing history to reach triple figures in wins. Owner Carl Tomblin II calls CET Dirty Dilly “one out of a million.” “I am so proud of Dilly and what she’s accomplished in her career. She’s one dog out of a million … I never expected to raise a greyhound like her,” Tomblin said. “She’s the total package and so suited for the Tri-State racetrack. I’ve been so blessed to have a greyhound like her during my career in racing.” CET Dirty Dilly, a December 2018 greyhound out of SH Avatar-CET Dirty Nicki, and littermates CET Dirty Dan, CET Dirty Gurly, CET Dirty Joey, CET Dirty Red and CET Dirty Ryder were raised the first year by Tomblin on his farm in West Virginia. Mike Strickland completed the group’s final six months of training in Kansas. “The first year on the farm none of the littermates stood out. They all were very responsive, aggressive, smart and a great-handling litter,” Tomblin said. “When Mike (Strickland) had them in Kansas, Dilly and Dan were the two best in the litter.” CET Dirty Dilly broke in at Tri-State in August 2020, winning her first four races (Maiden and Grades D, C, B) by a combined 26 lengths. In September, she traveled to Wheeling Island where she finished second by a head to Mac’s Tayloranne in the West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Stakes final. In November 2020, CET Dirty Dilly returned to Tri-State. She won her first start back on her home track in Grade A and 2 ½ years later is still racing in Grade AA. CET Dirty Dilly’s career numbers through March 15 of this year are eye-popping – 100 wins, 18 seconds, 7 thirds and 3 fourths in 137 lifetime trips. She won 42 and 40 races in back-to-back years as national win champion in 2021-22. In addition to reaching 100 career wins, other CET Dirty Dilly accomplishments Tomblin is most proud of include: -Breaking the track record in September 2021, winning by 17 ½ lengths in 29.23 “Going to the track with family since I was 3 years old, I always wondered over the years if a greyhound would ever break the track record,” Tomblin said. “To own the greyhound who broke the record is hard to believe.” -Winning the $100,000 Mardi Gras Challenge at Tri-State in December 2021 by 1 ½ lengths in 29.84. “The final field had greyhounds who raced at Southland, Iowa and Palm Beach in it,” Tomblin said. “It was a tough, stacked stakes final. Winning the championship was very special.” -Capturing the $65,000 WVGOBA Sprint Championship in June 2021 by 13 lengths in 29.89. -Track record 16 straight victories in April through July 2021 as well as other multiple win streaks. -Two-time All-America team captain and Rural Rube Award winner. “Never would I have thought I’d have a greyhound achieve back-to-back All-America and Rural Rube Award honors,” Tomblin said. “It’s been a team effort with a lot of people involved along the way. My CET farm staff in West Virginia work every day with me and with our greyhounds – they are the foundation of my business.” CET Dirty Dilly doesn’t appear to be slowing down this year. She had 10 wins and 2 seconds in her first 12 starts. “I hope Dilly stays healthy and she’s able to compete in the West Virginia-bred sprint stakes in May. Winning it again would be icing on the cake,” Tomblin said. “As far as retiring Dilly, she’ll let us know when it’s time. Jim Gartland Mar 14, 2024 In the age of less racing opportunities, no stake race programs, and a much smaller pool of competitors, the NGA awards singling out the best of the best at each distance take on a new look for 2023. Historically labeled the Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards, 2023 honorees will simply be tabbed as America's best sprinter and router. A Wheeling speedster and Tri State distance star have been chosen as recipient's of these awards for 2023. Artex Pumbaa and distance star, JS Comin Undone have been named as recipients of the two awards and will be honored at Hall of Fame ceremonies during the spring meet on Thursday, April 25. A 2020 son of Flying Hydrogen-Arkans Cancer , Artex Pumbaa finished with 22 wins for the year tying him for the Wheeling lead with JSP Rayzendacash. He finished in the money in 82% of his starts. Perhaps the most steady and consistent greyhound at Wheeling in 2023, Pumbaa competed against the best, day in and day out, and closed the year winning six in a row. He would finish the season with a 51-22-8-6 record, He was also named Captain of the 2023 All Star team. Racing exclusively at 3/8ths of a mile, he moved to Tri State after the closing of Southland and immediately took to the Charleston oval winning his first AA after just a few starts. Racing for the Lester Raines Kennel, he finished in the money in 30 of his 37 starts. < Back SENATE MAJORITY WHIP RYAN WELD'S RETIRED GREYHOUND BASKS IN THE ATTENTION DURING VISIT TO WEST VIRGINIA CAPITOL Mar 8, 2021 Members of the West Virginia Legislature and their staffs let a sleeping dog lie this week and stepped over the retired racing greyhound snoozing on the floor in Senate Majority Whip Ryan Weld’s office. Weld, R-Brooke, adopted Ava the greyhound, which resides with Weld and his wife Alex in Wellsburg. This past week, she made the trip to Charleston with Weld and took up residence in his office at the Capitol. During her stay, people got to know her, learn about racing greyhounds, and even get some animal-provided stress therapy during a hectic week at the Legislature, Weld said. “She is here — she’s the belle of the ball,” he said. “We have had more visitors — people just stopping by to see her, the staff and people working in the building. “The building is quiet. It’s weird. It’s not a normal session. Her being here gives them (staffers) something to keep them company in the office.” And Ava has been very receptive of the attention, according to Weld. She greets each visitor to the office, and often lays in the doorway between Weld’s office and the entryway so she can take in all the action. “She loves it,” Weld said. “Ava is the most relaxed, calm, laid-back dog. She is a very, very calm and relaxed dog by her demeanor. There were four people in my office one day this week. When they left they all had to step over her. She doesn’t care.” Weld takes her for walks and they visit other offices. She also gets stopped by people along the way who want to greet and pet her. “This has been a good experience for her, and a good experience for the staff having her here,” he said. “Sometimes this can be a stressful place to be. A lot of law schools have a therapy dog in their libraries around finals time. “Someone can take their five minutes, come down and visit, and maybe de-stress a bit.” Visitors also get the chance to learn a little about racing greyhounds, and how they look, feel and act, Weld said. “I don’t think most people have ever been around one before,” he said. “I had not, until I went to the Beech Bottom Kennels in 2019 and that’s where we met her.” He thinks people were surprised by her demeanor. “I might be biased, but she is a good-looking dog,” Weld said. “They get to see just how soft their hair is, and how much they like to be petted.” Ava didn’t get to meet any lobbyists wanting to abolish greyhound racing in West Virginia, as none appear to be in Charleston this session, he said. Weld said those meeting her, though, can see she is a happy and well-adjusted canine “If there was any sort of mistreatment of dogs, it certainly doesn’t show with Ava,” Weld said. “She doesn’t shy away from people. Artex Pumbaa’s run at Casual Casey’s Wheeling track record of 16 wins in a row ended recently when the Blanchard Kennel sprint star missed his break and finished out of the money after posting 11 straight Grade AA victories. Only nine greyhounds in the history of Wheeling Island racing history have longer consecutive winning streaks than Artex Pumbaa. Local greyhound fan and historian Robin Reed, who has tracked Wheeling racing since its inception in 1976, feels a streak of 10 or more is a sign of a truly elite greyhound. “Of all the greyhound stats, total wins, stakes wins, and so forth, I think achieving a win streak of 10 or more races is probably the most difficult due to the fact that so many obstacles need to be overcome. A lot of greyhounds are very dependent on a good post position, but a big win streak will surely contain some less than ideal holes,” Reed said. “Weather can also be an obstacle if sloppy or muddy track conditions prevail. For any greyhound to be at his or her best for a few months without missing a beat is astounding.” James Blanchard called his star, Artex Pumbaa, multidimensional with a ton of desire. “(Artex) Pumbaa can break on top, or he can come from behind. He’s so consistent and tries hard every race … a lot of heart,” Blanchard said. “I’m so proud of what he’s accomplished.” In 2023, Artex Pumbaa posted a special season by sharing the track win championship with JSP Rayzendacash and earned the captaincy of the all-Wheeling team.
