  • $64,000 SPRINT CLASSIC FIRST-ROUND RESULTS | National Greyhound

< Back $64,000 SPRINT CLASSIC FIRST-ROUND RESULTS Feb 18, 2020 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The $64,000 Sprint Classic featured a familiar theme on Saturday at Derby Lane. All four first-round winners led at every race call in the track’s premier 550-yard stakes series. Lester Raines kennel’s O Ya Hot Rod, Shoot The Breeze of Floyd, and Lashmet’s LK’s Crush N It and LK’s Santorini defeated their respective opponents by a total of 15-1/2-lengths to earn 16 points apiece. The 32-dog field will be reduced to 16 after qualifying on Wednesday in Races 4 (8:10 p.m.), 6 (8:39), 8 (9:13) and 10 (9:47). Two ensuing rounds will determine finalists for the Feb. 29 championship race. Greyhounds accumulate points in each qualifier based on order of finish on a scale of 16-10-8-6-3-2-1-0. First place pays $25,000. “The better dogs won the races, and the favorites all pretty much came in as expected,’’ Derby Lane racing secretary Les Robison said. Of the four winners, only O Ya Hot Rod was not the public’s wagering favorite. He was the 7-2 second choice and paid $9 to win. Breaking from box 6, the 39-month-old male from a litter by Defrim Bale and O Ya Cindra prevailed by one length in 30.62 seconds under trainer Jennifer Richardson. Shoot The Breeze provided the most impressive performance with an eight-length romp out of post 8 in 30.07 seconds, the third fastest time of the meet. The 28-month-old son of Trent Lee and Danicas Go Daddy paid $2.60 as the prohibitive wagering choice for trainer Randy Floyd. LK’s Crush N It, the reigning national win champion and winner of four career stakes, clocked the second fastest time at 30.22 seconds out of box 3 for trainer Ken Deacon. He won by 4-1/2 lengths and returned $2.80 to win. It was the 70th career triumph from 99 starts for the 38-month-old male from a litter by LK’s Now R Never and LK’s All In. LK’s Santorini, a 34-month-old daughter of LK’s Vespar and LK’s Chardonnay, prevailed by two lengths in 30.57 seconds under Deacon. Starting from post 6, LK’s Santorini returned $4 to win. On Wednesday, Shoot The Breeze (box 2), LK’s Santorini (3) and O Ya Hot Rod (7) drew into Race 10, while LK’s Crush N It drew post 7 in Race 6. “I’m looking forward to Wednesday,’’ Robison said. “The 10th race has got three winners. That could be an exciting race depending on the break. Any one of the three that won the first round could possibly win the second round.’’ Previous Next

  • FESTIVAL OF STAKES UPDATE | National Greyhound

< Back FESTIVAL OF STAKES UPDATE Shane Bolender Sep 14, 2021 After two qualifying rounds in each of the six divisions in the 2021 edition of the Festival of Stakes at Southland Casino & Racing, the number of undefeated greyhounds remaining appears to be the fewest after two rounds in the history of the event. With two rounds remaining until the championship and consolation fields will be set, the smart money may be on even fewer remaining unscathed before the big event. Let’s take a quick recap look at the fields in each division going into round 3 action this coming weekend: Arkansas Bred Sprint Division (583 yards) To say GOVERNMENT SLAVE is undefeated through two rounds would be one thing, but the way this brindle female won her second round race gives hope that she may finish the deal and stay unbeaten going into Championship Sunday. This Magic City Kennel star isn’t the only one putting up good finishes for trainer Bill Nihan either. The kennel holds three of the top four positions in qualifying right now, nearly ensuring multiple entries at this point into the championship race. Other single race winners in this division had disappointing finishes in the other round so far, with IMARK BOOG (Ryan Farms), CBJ STARGAZER (T and T) and CBJ ELEKTRA (Wayne R. Ward) each running fourth or worse in their other effort, keeping the rest of pack close to possibly sneak into the finals with a couple big finishes in the final two rounds. Round 3 of qualifying action will be on Saturday, September 18th. Darby Henry Male Sprint Division (583 yards) Only one greyhound remains undefeated in this division, and the name of the greyhound who holds that designation is of no surprise. One of the best racing at Southland currently, CRAIGIE DELEGATE (Lester Raines Kennel) is not only undefeated through two rounds of qualifying action, but is now riding a five consecutive race win streak and there appears there is little in his way right now to stop him. He has 24 wins on the season with a little more than 3 months to go and is looking for his second major stakes championship in the past six weeks or so as he already locked up a spot in the championship finals, short of some distasterous occurrence. BARTS BLUE BLOOD (Charter Kennel) and KB’S MOODY RIVER (Magic City) are hanging close tied for 25 points thanks to a win and second place finish over the first two rounds and the next seven greyhounds are within a third place finish or better from making a major move up the charts. Third round action in the Darby Henry Male Sprint Division is slated for this coming Saturday. Darby Henry Female Sprint Division (583 yards) The ladies division in the Festival of Stakes appears to be one of the more exciting divisions as far as picking a clear cut favorite through two rounds. There are two undefeated greyhounds so far with HIGH KEY (Northshore Kennel) and JS KEEPHOPEALIVE (Lester Raines Kennel) riding high into round 3. Southland Derby Consolation Stakes winner, FIESTA GRACE (Gloria Dorsey) is within sniffing distance of the leaders with 25 points and a somewhat surprise entry hanging in fourth place with TURBO GIA (Bussmann-Balakas) scoring 22 points. Eight other greyhounds are lurking behind those top four vying for seemingly the last four spots in the championship field. Third round action for the ladies sprint division is slated for this Saturday. Barry Baldwin Juvenile Sprint Division (583 yards ) A “super” fast pup leads the field in this division as the only undefeated greyhound left. SUPER C BREW (Lester Raines Kennel) dominated his second round qualifying race by 8 lengths and counting past the wire this past Sunday to record his seventh win in just 17 starts. There is a complete logjam behind him with four greyhounds tied for second with 25 points each and another 3 greyhounds behind that pack tied at 22 points going into round 3 action this coming Sunday. Charter Kennel’s OSHKOSH HICKORY also posted a nice win during the second round, pulling away by five lengths as the betting favorite to bring his total to 22 points. This next round of qualifying will likely be key to either solidifying spots in the championship field, or being within a top two finish of sneaking into one of those coveted eight spots. Ness Sechrest Middle Distance Division (660 yards) Second time may be the charm for Razorback Classic Stakes Consolation Champ GODDESSOFTHEHUNT (Steve M. Sarras Kennel), who is the sole undefeated greyhound through two qualifying rounds in the Sechrest Middle Distance Division. Her quick break from the box and early speed has fueled two nice wins, one over ARKANS MABEL (Darren Henry Kennel) who is currently tied for the final spot in the championship field. Speaking of stakes winners, ARKANS RB TAZ (Darren Henry Kennel), the Razorback Classic Stakes Champion this season, lays tied for second after her blistering 10 length romp in round 2 and lurks around with 25 points. Tied with her for second is fan favorite CHILLAXIFICATION (Northshore Kennel), who’s monster closing style of running in sprint races begged to see what he could do in longer distances. He recently turned 4 years old last month, and although he has just three races on the Razorback Course, he has a win and second place so far in qualifying. From front to back, the top eight so far in this field is probably the closest in talent in all six of the divisions. Third round action in this division is slated to be contested this Friday. Ansel Styles, Jr. Marathon Distance Division (703 yards) Although this division had the fewest greyhounds entered into it since it’s inception over a decade ago in the Festival of Stakes, the two undefeated greyhounds sitting on top so far through two rounds should set up for a heck of a championship final if it stays the course. FGF DAVYCROCKETT (Charter Kennel) and SMILE N MEAN IT (Plum Creek Kennel) are unscathed and looking sharp, especially Davycrocket who has won comfortably going away in both his starts in this event. A trio of greyhounds are tied for third with 20 points each in JACK KNIGHT (Gloria Dorsey Kennel), RCK GOLDEN GRACE (Mike Harris Kennel) and WW HUSKY (Wayne R. Ward). The third round of qualifying is scheduled for Friday. Previous Next

  • LESTER RAINES WINS 2021 WHEELING KENNEL CHAMPIONSHIP | National Greyhound

< Back LESTER RAINES WINS 2021 WHEELING KENNEL CHAMPIONSHIP Stan Pawloski Jan 19, 2022 A dream season. Not only did Lester Raines win their second straight Wheeling Island kennel championship in 2021, but the Joel Roden-trained greyhounds won 605 races during the year and captured all three of the track’s stakes races. Lester Raines trailed the pace-setting Blanchard Kennel for the first half of the 2021 racing season before taking over the top spot in late June and never looked back. The kennel champion amassed 330 victories in a second half surge. Lester Raines’ 605 victories last year easily outdistanced runner up Blanchard (528) and Charter (451). This marked Roden’s fourth championship with Lester Raines Kennel – following up crowns in 2016, 2018 and 2020. The kennel previously won Wheeling titles in 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1996. The competition at Wheeling Island drives Roden every year. “Every kennel championship is special and means a lot to me and our crew. All our hard work paid off. We get into the business for the competition, which I love. That’s what greyhound racing is all about,” Roden said. “Everything came together for us last year, especially in the second half when we ran super. To top 600 victories and to win all three of the track’s stakes races, it was a special year and I am so happy for what we were able to accomplish.” Next in line in the final 2021 standing behind Lester Raines (605), Blanchard (528) and Charter (451) were Jacobs Racing (411), Brad Boeckenstedt (378), Steve Sarras (361), Wayne Ward (351), Imark (349), Patriot/Taplin (330), Xtrem Hess Racing and Rangel (326 each), A Ray (288) and Code Red (184). Code Red Kennel raced for only half of the 2021 season. Pacing the Lester Raines’ attack last year were JS Slush Fund with 19 victories and four greyhounds with 14 wins each – RS Big D, RS’s Dark Night, JS Saltythursday and O Ya Trisha. Three other racers posted 10 victories – Crocket Pace, SNL Nowherefast and JS Wanna Bee. “We didn’t have a lot of superstars, but a big group of consistent greyhounds who had a good shot of winning each time they went to the starting box,” Roden said. “We had a lot of greyhounds come in during the year who really liked the track and did well.” Checking in with nine victories apiece were JS Keep Diggin, O Ya Sniper, Teaser’s Tickle, SNL Whiskey Girl, Craigie Padre and B Ashley Morgan. Recording eight wins each were Rooftop Rachelle, O Ya Bobbie Sue, JS Born To Fly, Aunt Patty Cake and RS’s Prime Time. Capturing stakes crowns for the Lester Raines Kennel in 2021 were Teaser’s Tickle in the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic, the racetrack’s featured stakes event; RS’s Dark Night in the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile; and RS’s Prime Time in the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship. After winning the WV-bred Juvenile, RS’s Dark Night came back the next month and finished fourth in the Mountaineer Classic. “Not only did we have a killer year, but to take all three stakes races made it even more special,” Roden said. Roden credited his Wheeling crew – Julie Roden, Amanda McCardle, Jaylynn McCardle, Kenneth Kelly and Scott Robinette – for playing a key role in the kennel’s success in 2021. “We got a total combined effort from our team – Lester Raines, the greyhounds and all our lease customers,” Roden said. “All played a hand in our success.” In addition to having the most wins in 2021, Lester Raines garnered the most thirds (462) while Blanchard was tops in seconds (490). Lester Raines was the leader in win percentage with 18 percent followed by Blanchard with 15 percent and Charter with 14 percent. Lester Raines led all kennels with a 46 percent trifecta mark. Blanchard was next with 42 percent while Charter followed with 41 percent. Previous Next
