  • NO MORE SHOOT('IN) THE BREEZE | National Greyhound

< Back NO MORE SHOOT('IN) THE BREEZE Sep 28, 2020 “I miss him.’’ Randy Floyd couldn’t hide his feelings about Shoot The Breeze, who left Derby Lane recently for the more lucrative purse structure at Southland Racing in West Memphis, Ark. Shoot The Breeze represented the past and present for Floyd and wife Patti, who operate one of the 14 kennels at Derby Lane. He became their first win champion in 13 years at the January-to-June meet, and his dam – Danicas Go Daddy – provided many fond memories for the Floyds, who raced her at the Florida West Coast track from 2010-13. “Shoot The Breeze was just a nice dog,’’ Randy Floyd said. “He didn’t bother anybody. He wasn’t playful. . . more or less, all business. “He just came out and ran. When we broke him in, I didn’t have any idea he was going to turn out to be this good.’’ Shoot The Breeze was better than good. He developed into Derby Lane’s fastest athlete on the 550-yard course. In the January-to-June meet, the 35-month-old son of track record holder Trent Lee possessed seven of the top 10 times – highlighted by a 30.00-second clocking on Feb. 19. From Jan. 29 to Feb. 22, Shoot The Breeze won a career-high six consecutive races with times ranging between 30.00-30.19 seconds. He won those races by a combined 45-1/2 lengths. “He was cooking then,’’ Floyd said. Shoot The Breeze finished the meet with 15 victories from 24 starts, denying 2019 All-America sprinter LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel a potential record-setting third top-dog meet title in a row. He edged LK’s Crush N It by one win. When owner Charles Haliburton sent his standout greyhound to Southland Racing, Shoot The Breeze departed with a four-race win streak - including an 8-length romp in his final start on Sept. 15. The 84-pound speedster won 29 of 49 races at Derby Lane, and finished third in a pair of stakes races: the $64,000 Sprint Classic on Feb. 29, and the $18,000 1925 Historical Inaugural on Jan. 4. “It was fun to watch him, even though I wasn’t (trackside),’’ Floyd said. “When I left the kennel, I could watch him with Patti on the computer. “He doesn’t break that much anymore, but he rushes down to the turn. And then once he gets around that turn, it’s like, “Forget it, you’re not going to catch him.’’ The previous Floyd greyhound to claim a meet win title was Hometown Boy for the then Floyd & Porter kennel in the January-to-June campaign in 2007. Hometown Boy captured his top-dog title with 18 victories from 28 starts, finishing three wins ahead of runner-up Brady Thomas, also a Floyd & Porter athlete. Hometown Boy owned one stakes title: the Sprint Classic in 2007. He made history in that event by becoming the first dog in the 45-year-old Sprint Classic to complete an undefeated series with four qualifying victories and the title win. Only one other dog has achieved that since: LK’s Crush N It in 2019. Hometown Boy raced from 2005-08, and won 54 of 126 races with $64,072 in purse earnings. He also holds the 550-yard record at Tampa Greyhound Track with a clocking of 30.01 seconds. Shoot The Breeze has impeccable breeding. His sire, Trent Lee, set the Derby Lane 550-yard record with a clocking of 29.59 seconds in 2006. Danicas Go Daddy competed in stakes races at Derby Lane for the Floyds, and won 32 of 172 starts from 2010-13. “Dogs like Shoot The Breeze come along very rarely,’’ Floyd said. “A lot of times, they run so had that they break themselves down. They’ve got one speed, and that’s it. “I was proud of (Shoot The Breeze’s win title). I can’t eat it. I can’t spend it. It’s on paper. But yeah, it was nice.’’ Previous Next

  • DERBY LANE ENDS 19-20 MEET | National Greyhound

< Back DERBY LANE ENDS 19-20 MEET Jun 29, 2020 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – For nearly two years, a bull’s-eye has been attached to LK’s Crush N It. The Lashmet kennel standout greyhound has been an All-America first-team selection and national wins champion – both in 2019 – and a winner of five lifetime stakes titles. On Tuesday afternoon, LK’s Crush N It has a target of his own to shoot at during the final performance of the Derby Lane 2019-20 season. A victory in Race 10 would allow the 3-1/2-year-old son of LK’s Now R Never and LK’s All In to tie Floyd kennel’s Shoot The Breeze for top dog honors at the January-to-June meet. It would complete an unprecedented accomplishment at the 95-year-old track. No greyhound is believed to have captured three consecutive meet win titles. “I don’t think it’s ever been done – three consecutive (times) of being the win leader,’’ Derby Lane racing secretary Les Robison said. “It hasn’t been (done) since I’ve been here. . . . and I’ve been around the track since ’71 - either as a patron or employee. “That would be exciting if he could do that. It would just be one more laurel that he would have.’’ LK’s Crush N It, who would raise his career win total to 79 with a victory, enters the Grade A 550-yard event with 14 victories for the meet, one behind Shoot The Breeze – who hasn’t raced since June 13. LK’s Crush N It has won his past two races and drew box 5 in Race 10, slated for 2:47 p.m. The 75-pound dog is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. Trained by kennel manager Ken Deacon, LK’s Crush N It has been Derby Lane’s top dog in each of the past two meets – amassing 50 victories during that span to lead all greyhounds nationally in total wins for 2019. The 550-yard specialist is owned by breeders John and Jill Lashmet of Eaton, Colo. LK’s Crush N It is the third consecutive dog with back-to-back meet win championships, joining Jiminy Reno (2018) and RT’s Bo Jangles (2017) – both from Cal Holland kennel. Other Derby Lane dogs to equal that feat since at least 2004 include Abernathy kennel’s Husker Magic (2014-15), and Venus Espinosa (2012-13) of Patriot kennel. This will be the first meet win title for Shoot The Breeze, a 32-month-old male from a litter by Trent Lee and Danicas Go Daddy. Owned by Charles Haliburton, Shoot The Breeze sprints for kennel owners Randy and Pat Floyd – whose previous meet win leader was Hometown Boy in 2007. The top kennel in wins will be Lester Raines, which entered Monday with an insurmountable 195-172 lead over ABC Racing. It will be Lester Raines’ first championship since 2010. Jennifer Richardson, who started the meet as the kennel manager and trainer, has subsequently moved to Virginia for family reasons with the operation currently being handled by Anthony Diaz. The meet’s fastest times have been clocked by Shoot The Breeze (30.00 seconds at 550 yards) and Lester Raines’ O Ya Diesel (37.01 seconds at 660 yards). The Derby Lane meet was reduced to 131 performances after losing 49 programs because of the coronavirus pandemic. No racing was held from March 20-May 7. Robison said all 14 kennels remain on the roster for the upcoming July-to-December meet. Previous Next

  • WHEELING YEAR IN REVIEW: 2021 HANDLES SOAR, TRACK HIGHLIGHTS | National Greyhound

< Back WHEELING YEAR IN REVIEW: 2021 HANDLES SOAR, TRACK HIGHLIGHTS Stan Pawloski Jan 18, 2022 The 2021 greyhound racing season at Wheeling Island produced record handles following the closure of all the Florida racetracks at the end of 2020. Wheeling Island handled $237 million on greyhound racing in 2021 compared to a handle of $75 million in 2019 (last full season numbers available) – a 212 percent increase. In 2020, the track was closed for three months due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With a 20-race card in 2021, weekend handles surpassing a million dollars a program was commonplace as were $5 million handles a week. The exciting and fun-filled 2021 season had numerous highlights on the track, including the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic, two West Virginia bred stake events, a record-tying performance and win streaks which generated interest. In addition, several youngsters with promising futures opened their careers and the track experienced an influx of racers from other operations – notably the Florida tracks and Iowa late in the year. Top greyhound honors went to Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s AD Black Falcon, who posted 20 victories. Next in line with 19 wins each were Jacobs Racing Kennel’s Abbi’s Gusta Win, Lester Raines Kennel’s JS Slush Fund and Charter Kennel’s Oshkosh Heart. The Lester Raines Kennel, trained by Joel Roden, captured the 2021 kennel championship – making it back-to-back crowns. It was Raines’ third title in the last four years. In the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic in late October, Lester Raines Kennel’s Teaser’s Tickle took charge early and never looked back in winning the track’s featured stakes event by 2 ½ lengths in 29.58. Abbi’s Eagle (Jacobs Racing Kennel) took runner up honors while Penrose Boss (Blanchard Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final order of finish were RS’s Dark Night (Lester Raines Kennel), fourth; Ding Dong Ditch (Imark Kennel), fifth; Abbi’s Frontman (Jacobs Racing Kennel), sixth; CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel), seventh; and Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), eighth. Teaser’s Tickle made track history in winning the Mountaineer Classic. Since the track opened in 1976, no other greyhound had ever captured a major stakes championship in just 14 career races. The old mark was held by Large Lee, who won the 2008 Firecracker Sprint in his 15th career trip. It was a remarkable run to the stakes crown for Teaser’s Tickle as the September 2019 greyhound out of Bella Infrared-Beautiful Tease entered the qualifying rounds without a single Grade AA race under his belt. After a seventh in the first round, Teaser’s Tickle romped to three straight wins by a combined 23 lengths to earn a spot in the final. In the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile in September, Lester Raines Kennel’s RS’s Dark Night rocketed by the leaders on the backstretch before pulling away to a 5 ½-length victory in 29.81. JA’s Croft (Code Red Kennel) took runner up honors while Mac’s New York (A Ray Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final finish were RS’s Blue Heaven (Lester Raines Kennel), fourth; Mac’s Zhivago (A Ray Kennel), fifth; RS’s Prime Time (Lester Raines Kennel), sixth; Coach Wonder (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), seventh; and Mac’s Evita (A Ray Kennel), eighth. In the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship in November, Lester Raines Kennel’s RS’s Prime Time dominated the field in the final – finishing 5 lengths ahead of runner up CET Dirty Gurly (Steve Sarras Kennel) while JA’s Moon Man (Code Red Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the Keystone final finish were Mac’s Choo (A Ray), fourth; Mac’s Zhivago (A Ray), fifth; GLS Fast Food (Jacobs Racing), sixth; Macs Chapman (A Ray), seventh; and RS’s Blue Heaven (Lester Raines), eighth. The longest winning streak during the 2021 racing season was five in a row by six greyhounds – Abbi’s Gusta Win (Jacobs Racing Kennel), Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), O Ya Trisha (Lester Raines Kennel), Oshkosh Heart (Charter Kennel), Imark Daria (Imark Kennel) and RS Big D (Lester Raines Kennel). Two greyhounds posted four straight wins twice in 2021 – O Ya Trisha (Lester Raines Kennel) and CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel). Other racers with four victories in a row were AD Black Falcon (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel), BO’s Owen (Blanchard Kennel), Easi Lil Charlie (Blanchard Kennel), FGF Ron Weasley (Charter Kennel), JS Wanna Bee (Lester Raines Kennel), JS Slush Fund (Lester Raines Kennel), JS In The Money (Rangel Kennel), KB’s Copy Kat (Charter Kennel), LK’s Sheridan (Steve Sarras Kennel), Pat C Paul (Rangel Kennel), Super Ollie (Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel) and Teaser’s Tickle (Lester Raines Kennel). The track’s 330-yard record time of 16.74, held since December 2015 by Lester Raines Kennel’s Atascocita Santo, was tied by Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s UBX Crackereater in November. UBX Crackereater, a January 2019 greyhound out of SH Avatar-Beautiful Tease, is owned by Cheyenne Criswell and Jason Hess. Previous Next

Learn about the National Greyhound Association and dog racing in North America. Gain insight to the fasted dog breed in the world and the greyhound professionals who steward the breed to perfection! Rooted in Tradition Since 1906 The National Greyhound Association (NGA), is a voluntary non-profit association operated in accordance with the laws of Kansas. The NGA is officially recognized by the entire greyhound racing industry—namely, all greyhound racetracks and individual racing jurisdictions, as well as foreign greyhound registries and governing bodies—as the sole registry for racing greyhounds on the North American continent., primarily the United State and Mexico. Organized in 1906, the National Greyhound Association has functioned in this capacity as the sole registry ever since the inception of greyhound track racing in the United States for more than 2,000 greyhound owners and breeders whose Greyhounds compete at tracks throughout the United States and Mexico. Records on all breedings, litters whelped, individual registrations, transfers, leases, etc., are maintained at the NGA’s headquarters in Abilene, Kansas. The NGA’s rigid identification system, the envy of other pari-mutuel racing and animal registries, has played an integral role in maintaining the sport’s impressive reputation as a creditable, major spectator sport. It also is a primary concern and goal of the NGA to promote the improvement and development of the greyhound breed itself, through maintenance of pedigree and Stud-book records dating back to the latter part of the 19th century. The NGA is an associate member of the World Greyhound Racing Federation and a charter and founding member of the World Alliance of Greyhound Registries, The Greyhound Alliance and the American Greyhound Council. Twice a year, the National Greyhound Association hosts National Meets to showcase up-and-coming greyhound athletes, collaborate on industry-related business and celebrate our greyhound achievements . The National Greyhound Association is a community of industry members , wealthy in knowledge about greyhounds and dogs alike, and a long history of friendship.

< Back PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB PRESENTS THE SEMIFINALS FOR OUR LAST $50,000 HE'S MY MAN CLASSIC! Jeff Prince Jan 17, 2020 West Palm Beach, Fl. - Semifinal action for Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 He’s My Man Classic takes place Sunday afternoon, January 19. Two semifinal races will be contested, with the top eight-point scorers earning their way into the championship final slated for Saturday afternoon, January 19. Following 18 qualifying races, the sweet sixteen in point earnings will go muzzle-to-muzzle to determine which eight of these superstars will be going for the 2020 championship and the $25,000 first-place prize. After three rounds of qualifying its Rader Racing Kennel’s Sarahdipedy leads the semifinalists with a perfect 45 points, going undefeated through the first three qualifying rounds. Race 12 is a wide-open event. You have the best of the early speedsters matching up with the best of late finishers. A handicapper’s nightmare! She has won all three of her qualifying races and has posted the fastest race times in each of those rounds. Sarahdipedy will be the youngest of all the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic finalists and have the least number of races around the 545-Yard Royal Palm Course. Her main impediment to her road of perfection may come from the two Koppe, Staats & Collins semifinalists, #1 Pat C Dewdrop and #8 Pat C Inferno .
