< Back HELL BENT'S FAST START EARNS SPOT IN WHEELING HISTORY Stan Pawloski Aug 7, 2023 NOTE: August marks 47 years of greyhound racing at Wheeling. In conjunction with the anniversary, this column will feature articles related to the track’s history. Today, greyhounds reaching Grade AA undefeated during their careers are highlighted. Heading into the 2023 racing season at Wheeling Island, 29 greyhounds had climbed the ladder straight to Grade AA after winning their Maiden debut. Now there’s 30. The latest to accomplish the feat in the 47-year history of Wheeling Downs/Island is Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s Hell Bent. The youngster won his first Maiden race in early June before capturing Grades D, C, B and A in successive starts. An August 2021 greyhound out of Konomi-Liz Cambage, Hell Bent is trained by Jill Spicer and owned by David Strong. He finished fourth in his first Grade AA trip. Of those 30 greyhounds, nine went on to capture at least their first start against Grade AA company. The first Wheeling greyhound to go straight to Grade AA undefeated was Royal Onyx in 1978, winning his first five starts – Maiden and Grades C, B, A and AA. The last racer to accomplish the feat before Hell Bent was JS Wanna Bee in 2020, capturing her first five races – Maiden and Grades D, C, B and A. The Wheeling record for most victories in a row to start a career is 12 by Kiowa Sweet Trey in 2001. The sprint star won Maiden, Grades D, C, B, A and seven in Grade AA. Kiowa Sweet Trey broke the mark of 10 straight career-opening wins by Onie Reid in 1985-86. Onie Reid was victorious in Maiden, Grades C, B, A and six in Grade AA. Although Kiowa Sweet Trey and Onie Reid are regarded as two of the best greyhounds to ever grace the Wheeling oval, most of the racers who reached Grade AA undefeated weren’t superstars. It’s a rare feat as only 30 greyhounds have turned the trick since the track opened on Aug. 18, 1976. Following are the nine greyhounds who raced straight to Grade AA undefeated and then won at least their first top grade start, year accomplished and number of career-opening victories: Kiowa Sweet Trey – July through December 2001; won 12 in a row; Maiden, D, C, B, A, seven in AA. PETERSBURG, Fla. – LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel, a 2019 All-America first-team selection, collected his 80th lifetime victory Friday at Derby Lane. Starting from box 5 in Race 10, the 43-month-old son of LK’s Now R Never and LK’s All In broke sharply and led all the way – clocking the 550-yard Grade A event in 30.54 seconds. He finished 1-1/2 lengths in front of Nova kennel’s Deco Colt Gun. LK’s Crush N It paid $5 as the 3-2 wagering favorite. It was his fourth attempt at reaching the milestone. < Back WW SLICK SIMON CAPTAINS 2020 ALL-WHEELING TEAM, LS LUV IT THREE-PEATS Stan Pawloski Feb 17, 2021 Wheeling Island win champion WW Slick Simon has been selected captain of the 2020 all-Wheeling team. The Wayne Ward Kennel sprinter, owned by Jaws Racing and trained by Ron Otto, won 17 races last year in a season cut short by three months by the coronavirus pandemic. WW Slick Simon is the kennel’s first track win champion since it was booked at Wheeling in late 1999 . WW Slick Simon, an April 2017 greyhound out of Kiowa Producer-WW’s Polished, came to Wheeling Island in early 2019 after opening his career at Southland Greyhound Park. He was the consensus choice to head the 10-greyhound team. For the first time since the all-Wheeling honors were launched in 2009, a greyhound has earned a spot on the team for three straight years – Blanchard Kennel’s L’s Luv It. The sprinter was recognized in 2018, 2019 and now 2020 for her accomplishments. The recently retired L’s Luv It captured 46 races in her last three years and made the final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes every season, finishing third in 2018. In addition to L’s Luv It, two other greyhounds on the 2020 team are repeats from last year – Lester Raines Kennel’s JS Drinkmepretty and Jacobs Racing Kennel’s JSK Roulette. Three kennels placed a pair of greyhounds on the 2020 all-Wheeling team – Craigie Pirate and JS Drinkmepretty, Lester Raines Kennel; JS Go Flex and JSK Roulette, Jacobs Racing Kennel; CTW Tira Misu and TNT Free Falling, Patriot/Taplin Kennel. Rounding out the 2020 all-Wheeling team are BGR Big Al, Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel; and CG’s Penny Shoe, Abrahamson Kennel. The all-Wheeling team was selected by local greyhound historian Robin Reed and Pawloski. The criteria used to determine the selections included number of wins, winning percentage, in the money finishes, win streaks, stakes performances and overall records. < Back SALUD RAINDROP AND SARKAZUM SELECTED FOR TOP NGA AWARDS Jim Gartland Mar 24, 2020 Two Southland stars have picked up the NGA’s annual Awards; Salud Raindrop winning the 49th Annual NGA Rural Rube Award as the nation’s top sprinter for 2019, and Sarkazum capturing the Flashy Sir Award as the best distance greyhound in the land. Raindrop nosed out JS Flamin Ace for the Rural Rube and Sarkazum got the nod over B Tigger in this year’s voting. Voting was tight in both races with twelve different greyhounds receiving Rural Rube votes and eleven different racers getting votes in the Flashy Sir category. A 2017 daughter of Bella Infrared-Mega Whitney , Raindrop was considered the "best greyhound in the country" for most of the year. She captured the nation's attention by snapping off win streaks and running blistering times throughout the 2019 Southland campaign. She put together win streaks of nine, five, eleven and five on her way to winning a meet leading thirty six races at Southland against the best in the country even while missing a full two months of racing. She was also voted as Captain of the All American team by the NGA. Owned by Jeff Blair and Mike Montoya and racing for the Natalie Looper trained, Gloria Dorsey Kennel, Raindrop started the year off with a bang winning ten of her first fourteen starts, including a first round win in the Hound Madness Stake. A stumble out of the box in the second round took her out of the running for the finals, however. She would then go on to rip off nineteen wins in her next twenty one starts including all four qualifying rounds and the championship final of the 2019 Southland Derby. Her next twelve starts would bring eight more wins to her already stellar resume including four qualifying round wins in the $200,000 Darby Henry Female Sprint Championship. Racing luck, or maybe bad luck, got the best of her in the finals where she was hit at the turn and suffered a hip injury which sidelined her until late in the year. Her quick box break and speed to the front were her signature and she was rarely caught once on the lead. She won 76% of the races she started and hit the pay sheet forty four times in forty seven tries, a 93% in the money finishing rate! A much deserved award for this fabulous sprinter. Congratulations to Jeff, Mike, Gloria, Natalie and all the connections of Salud Raindrop . Runner-up in the Rural Rube voting was Garth Bolton and Lester Raines' JS Flamin Ace . This son of Superior Panama-CH Sweet Honey made the finals of five stakes at Southland including the GAGF, Southland Derby, Male Sprint, King & Queens and Two For The Money Stakes. He captured the $200,000 Darby Henry Male Sprint title as well as the King & Queens and Two For The Money events. He compiled an amazing 58-28-9-5-7 record and most likely would have been a shoe in for the Rural Rube in any other year. He was also named to the All American team. Others high in the voting for the Rural Rube were Ungs & Galbreath's Revin Devon , Pat McMillon's Mac's Trudeaux , and John & Jill Lashmet's LK's Crush N It . Voting was close for the top spot in the Flashy Sir contest. Only two greyhounds received double digit votes and were separated by only three votes in the end. Sarkazum won out over B Tigger with Dyenuhmite , Takin N Interest , Elizabeth Banks and LK's Hi Pockets not far behind. Sarkazum is a brindle son out of "home grown" O'Donnell stock, Shonn and Jennah . He is the epitome of a distance star as he ran only one official race less than 660 yards in 2019. He won races at 660, 703 and 880 yards over the course of the Southland meet. His credentials for the year read as follows: $100,000 Razorback Champion (660), 2nd in the $100,000 Super Marathon Championship (820), overall 2019 record of 51-14-15-5-9 and 1st team NGA All American. Racing against the best competition in the country day in and day out, Sarkazum consistently brought home paychecks, finishing in the money 43 times or nearly 85% of his starts. Running distance races only, and a majority of those at 820 yards, he managed to remain competitive and relatively injury free. He rarely missed a start and other than a short break in early March averaged about 4.25 races a month. All of this while turning three midway through the year. His win in the final of the $100,000 Razorback Championship was in typical, blazing come from behind style winning by a length in the end over the likes of Super C Chilly , American Andale , MRL Full Boat , Drink It Off , Cool It Now and Cherokee Fiddle . He would win three of four qualifying rounds in the $100,000 Super Marathon Championship before running a trouble filled 2nd to B Tigger in the final. < Back GO ON HORSE UNBEATEN IN WVGOBA JUVENILE QUALIFIERS Stan Pawloski Sep 17, 2020 Abrahamson Kennel’s Go On Horse is the lone unbeaten sprinter after two rounds of the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Stakes at Wheeling Island. Go On Horse posted his second consecutive victory Wednesday afternoon in the second round, bumping his point total to 30 heading into the Sunday afternoon semifinals. The juvenile championship final is scheduled for Saturday matinee, Sept. 26. Also recording second round wins were Steve Sarras Kennel’s CET Wreckitralph and CET Motley Crew. Following are capsule looks at the three second round races: Go On Horse took charge early and never looked back in romping to an 8-length victory in 30.25. CET Def Leopard and Mac’s Tayloranne rounded out the trifecta ticket. CET Wreckitralph caught pacesetter CET Ozzy in the stretch, pulling away to a 5-length win in 30.48. The sprinter posted his second consecutive victory Friday afternoon in the second preliminary qualifying round. AD Black Falcon has accumulated 30 points heading into the Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 14, third round. Other greyhounds racing to victory in the second round were Gloves Off, Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel; Gonz Pina Kata, Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel; Fit The Battle, Jacobs Racing Kennel; AB Bad Influence, Jacobs Racing Kennel; Easi Lil Charlie, Blanchard Kennel; Atascocita Birma, Abrahamson Kennel; Me No Care, Steve Sarras Kennel; Craigie Pirate, Lester Raines Kennel; Saber Rylie, Imark Kennel; and CTW Tira Misu, Patriot/Taplin Kennel. < Back SEMI-FINALS 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY Jan 24, 2020 And it all comes down to this! Just two races of greyhounds remain in the 2020 Orange Park Derby and by the end of the card on Saturday evening, we will know just who made it into the finals. Sixteen greyhounds have the chance, but just who seizes the day, and the points, are yet to be seen. Let’s take a closer look at those races and see if we can get you cashing some tickets this weekend at bestbet Jacksonville. Saturday Evening January 25th, 2020 – Semi Finals of 2020 Orange Park Derby Race 7 – Really tough race here as we have 5 round winners and every greyhound in the field has at least finished in the quiniela in one or more of their starts. This one comes down to the break as far as I’m concerned. RTSS Gonwitdawin might have had a rough trip last time out, but back breaking, and with no speed around, she should be unabated to the lead and holding on late for the win. Pressuring here the entire way should be the other early footers. Fakeit To Makeit has not missed the quiniela in 5 straight and the trend continues here. A Long way to the rail from the outside, but with a good break it should be easy to get there. She will factor from the gun and push the leader to the wire. WP’s Twistedlady gets a great inside post and has even early to be in the conversation. She too should chase the pace from the start and be a factor for the duration of this one. And don’t sleep on Super C Addison. This greyhound is figuring out the distance well and can come from off the pace to get home a winner. If she breaks close, she could upset them all at the finish line. (4-7-6-2) Race 11 – This race is the weaker of the two and the stand-out pick is RPG Get You Back. Clearly the best greyhound in this field and the only undefeated one left in the stakes. With 4 rounds in a row, she is the one to beat, especially from a great 8 box in this race. Out and gone early on! She will dominate on the front end once again. Pressing the early pace should be UC Ricky Snickle. Ricky has not finished out of the money in 6 straight and that will continue in this effort. He has enough early push to challenge and should be around the pace for the early stages of this one. A clear next best, the real race should be for third. That could be very interesting as recent winner, and former 660 standout, GS Octavia is rounding back into form. She might break slow but has a good early rush and can come on a bit at the end of her efforts. She has a great post position to start from in this race and could be unset minded once again if she can get into the conversation early on. Pat C Woozy can really fly in the open and might just have the best closing speed in this bunch. Hard to ignore a win by 10 plus lengths, so we won’t. She likes it out here and will be coming on strong in the second half of this effort. If she wants a chance to win, she must not give the leaders too much of a cushion in the early stages of this race. (8-5-2-7) After tonight the field will be set. The post positions for the Orange Park Derby will take place on Wednesday Matinee January 29th. The finals will take place on Saturday evening February 1st at bestbet Jacksonville in conjunction with our Dash for Cash promotion and our fan favorite 2nd chance drawings. Previous Next
