Saul May 13, 2024 The $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Open Distance Stakes got underway, Saturday, May 11, at Tri State on the 677 yard course. A total of 32 qualifying sprinters were entered. After first round of races, CET Kennels posted three wins with Cet Electrify, Cet Dirty Skinny and Cetmark Zippy. Also Abrahamson Kennel sprinter, Gls Finleysfilly, secured a win. Winning racers accumulate 12 points. The greyhounds return for the second round on Friday, May 16. The quarter-finals will be Tuesday, May 21, followed by the semi-finals on Saturday, May 25. The Open Sprint Stakes championship is scheduled for Friday, May 31. A minimum of 16 and a maximum of 36 entries will be allowed. Entry fee is $1,000 with $500 of that fee due and payable by January 15, 2024 to reserve a spot (limit four spots per consignor). Remaining entry fee plus standard meet entry fee is due at time of nomination (Thursday prior to the meet). Based on the number of entries, races will be drawn into four, five or six dog fields. Winners in round 1 will face off in round 2; 2nd place finishers will face off in the Flite I and 3rd place finishers will run in the Flite II of round 2. < Back WHEELING ISLAND GREYHOUND RACING HANDLES SOAR Stan Pawloski May 13, 2021 With the closing of the remaining Florida greyhound racing tracks at the end of 2020, the handles for greyhound racing at Wheeling Island have exploded this year. The highlight was Wheeling’s first ever 1-million-dollar handle day during the Saturday afternoon program on Feb. 13 – $1,081,721 was bet on the 20-race card. The racetrack opened for operation in August 1976. The handle represents the amount of money bet on races from on-track patrons and from simulcast outlets. The first million-dollar handle day in February was no fluke as Wheeling Island has topped the million-dollar handle mark a total of 20 times this year through races May 8. The racetrack has a streak of 13 straight Saturdays exceeding a million dollars in the handle, including a record $1,384,757 on May 1. The national single day handle record in greyhound racing history took place on March 11, 1992, when $1,457,609 was wagered at The Woodlands in Kansas. For the five race programs from Wednesday, April 28, through Sunday, May 2, Wheeling Island handled a record $5,265,884 – an average of more than $1 million a day. During that week, two of the five days surpassed $1 million. West Virginia Senate Majority Whip Ryan Weld, R-Brooke, has been a strong advocate of greyhound racing in the state legislature and recently Weld and his wife, Alex, adopted “Ava” – a retired greyhound who has become a hit at their Wellsburg, W.Va ., home and at the Capitol in Charleston. “Over the past few years, there has been a misunderstanding in West Virginia that horse racing here was on the rise and that greyhound racing was on the decline. However, with the recent numbers we’ve seen in connection with our greyhounds, we know this isn’t true,” Weld said. “People all across the country have been enjoying greyhound racing in this state as other states have made the decision to end their racing industries.” The increase in the handles has given revenues a boost, Weld noted. “This significant increase in revenue has put West Virginia in a unique position – to not only ensure that the racers are cared for but that the hundreds of jobs within the industry are filled by those who want to ensure the credibility and its long-standing tradition of quality,” Weld said. West Virginia House Minority Whip Shawn Fluharty, D-Ohio, echoed Weld’s sentiments. “The increase in revenue further proves that our local legislators were correct in our analysis that the industry remains an economic driver for the Northern Panhandle and the state,” Fluharty said. “The critics trying to shut the industry down used outright lies in order to push their agenda which was driven by out-of-state interests and money.” Not only has Wheeling Island’s handle soared this year, the numbers at Tri-State Greyhound Park near Charleston also are on the rise. In the first quarter 2021 (January-March), a total of $52,954,448 was bet on Wheeling Island greyhounds while $27,145,056 was wagered on Tri-State racers. The total handle for the two West Virginia tracks combined was $80,099,504 for the first quarter. The West Virginia Annual Racing Commission Report shows the handles for each track by quarter and total for the year. Since the 2020 report has yet to be posted, the latest annual report available is from 2019. For the first quarter of 2019, Wheeling Island handled nearly $22 million for greyhound racing compared to almost $53 million for the first three months this year – more than doubling the amount bet. For the entire 2019 racing year, the report showed Wheeling Island handled $75 million while Tri-State did $49 million. If the 2021 pace continues, both tracks will smash their 2019 handle totals halfway through this year’s racing season. Fluharty noted the economic benefits of the racing industry are widespread. “As the (greyhound) industry continues to thrive in West Virginia, it will keep jobs here, keep families here and help us to rebuild the state at a time when it is desperately needed,” Fluharty said. Wheeling Island Kennel Association President Steve Sarras praised the efforts of lawmakers from the Northern Panhandle – Senators Weld, Bill Ihlenfeld, D-Ohio and Mike Maroney, R-Marshall and Delegates Fluharty and Erikka Storch, R-Ohio – for their racing support. “Our lawmakers took their valuable time to visit and research the greyhound industry – they saw with their own eyes the love and care that these dogs receive daily. They saw economic value and future job growth potential for the State of West of Virginia,” Sarras said. “They didn’t buy into deceptive propaganda and saved thousands of jobs and countless tax dollars for the state. Once the restrictions (COVID-19) lift in West Virginia and across the nation, I would expect more tourism into our beautiful state to watch these beautiful greyhounds do what they love to do – RUN.” During the 2020 West Virginia legislative session, then-Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson – whose bill to eliminate the Greyhound Breeding Development Fun was soundly defeated – and the anti-racing group Grey2K claimed greyhound racing is “an industry in decline.” Weld took exception to their claim. “To say this is an industry in decline, that’s simply a misnomer,” Weld said during floor debate on Carmichael’s bill. The record amount of dollars bet on greyhound racing this year also refute Carmichael’s and Grey2K’s claim that interest in the sport is waning. Back in 2020, Ihlenfeld saw the potential boost for greyhound racing in West Virginia with the closing of the Florida tracks. “There aren’t many industries in our state that we control. We’re getting close to being the only game in town when it comes to this industry (greyhound racing),” Ihlenfeld said. “Instead of kicking this industry to the curb, we ought to embrace it. We ought to modernize it. We ought to make it even better and allow even more people to send money into West Virginia.” Previous Next

< Back NOVA DOGS SHINE AT DERBY LANE Aug 10, 2020 It is a family affair at Derby Lane . . . and Nova kennel owner Hans Limmer couldn’t be any happier. Hi Noon Ruger, Hi Noon Ricochet and Hi Noon Recoil – all from a litter by two-time All-America first-team member SH Avatar and Hi Noon Wheezy – have entered the spotlight in the July-to-December meet. On Monday, Hi Noon Ruger led the win standings by a 6-5 margin over Hi Noon Ricochet. Hi Noon Recoil had clocked the fastest 550-yard time of 30.26 seconds on July 18 in an 11-length Grade A victory. Their efforts have led Nova to third place in the 14-kennel standings with 60 victories, behind reigning champion Lester Raines (71) and Abernathy (61). All three 29-month-old greyhounds are making their second appearances at Derby Lane. After starting their respective careers at the West Coast Florida facility in October, 2019, the dogs were moved two months later to Gulf Greyhound Park in La Marque, Texas. Limmer brought his athletes back to Derby Lane this past March, and they have flourished under trainer Missy Kubitz. Hi Noon Ruger, a 550-yard specialist who has won 15 of 32 career starts, is nearly perfect at the current Derby Lane meet. The female has six victories from eight appearances by a total of 23-1/2 lengths. Her two losses – both second-place showings – were by a nose and a neck. Hi Noon Ruger’s best time is 30.41 seconds on Aug. 1. She has won her past two races. All of Hi Noon Ruger’s wins for this meet have been at Grade A, Derby Lane’s top grade. Nova is the front-runner in Grade A wins with 25, 11 in front of Lester Raines. Hi Noon Ricochet’s five wins at the meet also have been solely against Grade A company. The male sprinter has made eight starts with one second, that coming in his most recent race this past Saturday. Hi Noon Ricochet’s best 550 time has been 30.56 seconds in a July 6 Grade A triumph. He has 15 lifetime victories from 36 starts. Hi Noon Recoil’s meet-best time was in one of three victories at this meet, all at Grade A. The male sprinter has won 14 of 33 lifetime starts. The trio is part of a seven-dog litter owned by Charles Haliburton III. Three other littermates have displayed talent at Derby Lane, with Hi Noon Revolt and Hi Noon Revolver competing at the Grade A level, and Hi Noon Revenge advancing to Grade B. High-performing Hi Noon athletes are nothing new to Nova, which captured a kennel win championship in the July-to-December 2016 meet. Hi Noon Renegade, a standout 550 sprinter who ran at Derby Lane in 2010-12, finished second in the meet win standings twice for Nova in the two six-month meets in 2011. That was Hi Noon Renegade’s best season, when he claimed his two stakes crowns in the $64,000 Sprint Classic and the $20,000 Gold Trophy Juvenile, and was chosen to the All-America eight-member first team. Also owned by Haliburton, Hi Noon Renegade won 56 of 100 career starts. Derby Lane features seven weekly performances with matinee racing Monday through Saturday, and a Saturday evening card. < Back SPRING MEET TO GO ON Julia Ward May 6, 2020 Dear members, The NGA board met on Tuesday, May 5 and we have decided to move forward with the spring meet on the dates announced previously. Schooling will be held on May 24, 25, 27 and 28 with races on June 1 and 4 and the auction on Friday, June 5. Please note that this decision is based on the State of Kansas and Dickinson County guidelines and could change based on new orders from either of the governmental entities. So, it is possible that if they change the allowed number of participants in gatherings or put another shelter in place order prior to the meet, it may be canceled altogether and we will not have another meet until the fall. The auction has been tentatively scheduled for 9:30 AM on June 5 and, at this time, looks to be held at the Greyhound Hall of Fame. However, the time and place are subject to change. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and for everyone safety, we have decided not to hold any evening events. The NGA board will have a very informal check in meeting at 9:30 AM Tuesday, June 2. We will have a formal board meeting a few weeks following the meet and take up any other matters as needed during the meet. There will not be a general meeting at this time for this meet. Also we decided to lower the percentage for online buyers from 5% down to 3%. The 2% buyers fees will still be in place, which was voted and passed by the board for the 2020 spring meet. So instead of 7% being paid by the buyers to buy online it will be 5%. For the fall we are still scheduled to do 5% for online bidding and a 2% fee for all buyers. And while we look forward to seeing everyone and encourage attendance, we also caution that there will be limited capacities to events and limited seating with social distancing guidelines in place, so please keep that in mind when you make your plans. Replays, information and the auction will be available on-line for everyone's benefit! Unfortunately due to the circumstances of COVID-19 the board has truly struggled in making the decisions concerning the spring meet. We want what’s best for everyone the buyers and sellers, or whole industry! We understand the need for the farmers for this meet and we share the concerns of the buyers due to the situations with the race tracks. Obviously, not everyone is going to be happy, everyone has their own opinion on how things should be done. Please remember you are more than welcome to run in your district to be on the board.
