< Back FF BISCAYNE CAPTURES TEXAS-BRED SPRINT STAKES Stan Pawloski Mar 9, 2020 FF Biscayne is a stakes champion. Late last year, the Wheeling-based greyhound traveled to Gulf Greyhound Park in Texas for the track’s two-month racing season in January/February. On the final night of racing, FF Biscayne captured the $50,000 Diane Whiteley Sprint Stakes. Not only did the sprinter roll to a box-to-wire 3 ½-length victory in the stakes final, but FF Biscayne shined throughout the short meet. In eight starts, she had 6 wins – all but one in Grade AA – and 2 seconds. Owner Joe Fusaro made the trip to La Marque, TX, from Minnesota for the stakes final Feb. 29. “I have been in the greyhound business as an owner since 2004 and this is my first major stakes win. I am super excited, thrilled and so proud of Biscayne,” Fusaro said. “To be there in person to watch the stakes final made it even more special. She was on her game and dominated the Gulf meet.” The stakes final, from the rail out, featured: 1—CTW Hard Bargain, 2—Granger Ghost, 3—Hi Noon Ricochet, 4—Cobi’s Stone Fox, 5—Ponda’s Smokey, 6—Slatex Goff, 7—FF Biscayne, 8—KB’s Safari. At the break, FF Biscayne – just like in the two qualifying round races – rocketed right to the front. At the first turn, she was up by 3 lengths and was never seriously challenged throughout the championship final. “Biscayne hit the lid and went right to the front – she was out and flying. She’s very tough on the lead and not short in the stretch,” Fusaro said. “I was confident when she broke on top, but you never count things until they happen. There were a lot of capable, outstanding greyhounds in the final.” Hi Noon Ricochet took runner up honors while CTW Hard Bargain rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the order of finish were Granger Ghost, fourth; Slatex Goff, fifth; KB’s Safari, sixth; Ponda’s Smokey, seventh; and Cobi’s Stone Fox, eighth. FF Biscayne, sent to post as the second favorite to Granger Ghost, paid $5.60 on a $2 win wager. The quiniela returned $46, the exacta $85, trifecta $350 and superfecta $1,682. The stakes event was open to any age Texas-bred greyhound. It was funded and organized by the Texas Greyhound Association in coordination with Gulf Greyhound Park. FF Biscayne raced out of the Libby-Watt Kennel at the Gulf and trained by Jake Ungs. At Wheeling, she competed in the Abrahamson Kennel and handled by Tom Engle. “I can’t say enough about the great job both Jake Ungs did with Biscayne at the Gulf and Tom Engle while she was racing at Wheeling,” Fusaro said. “They deserve a lot of the credit for her success.” Engle is equally thrilled by FF Biscayne’s stake victory. “I am so proud of Biscayne and very happy for Joe (Fusaro),” Engle said. “I thought she would like it at the Gulf.” Her six wins at the Gulf were by a combined 25 lengths – a 4-length average margin of victory. FF Biscayne opened her career at Mardi Gras in Florida in January 2018 – posting 3 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds and 2 fourths in 19 races before moving up to Wheeling in May. She had 6 wins, 3 seconds, 5 thirds and 6 fourths in 29 Wheeling trips in 2018. The sprinter competed at the Gulf Greyhound Park meet in January/February 2019 – posting 2 wins, 1 second and 1 third in eight starts. Upon returning to Wheeling, FF Biscayne finished the year with 12 wins, 5 seconds, 5 thirds and 4 fourths in 44 races. “The first time racing at the Gulf and at Wheeling, Biscayne was a good greyhound. The second time at each track, she was tremendous,” Fusaro noted. “She kept getting better and better and is still improving.” Fusaro mapped the breeding for FF Biscayne, an August 2016 greyhound out of Seldom Told-FF Taffy. “Biscayne was not a greyhound I purchased … I chose the breeding which makes her stakes victory even sweeter. FF Taffy and her brother, FF Code Red, one of the best greyhounds I have ever owned, were out of Sacred Drive,” Fusaro said. “It’s a Tony and Judy Mills dam bloodline which I like and continue to use. It’s been very successful.” Next up for FF Biscayne – Southland Park in West Memphis, Ark. “I was torn between sending her to Southland or back to Wheeling, but I wanted to give her a shot at the toughest track in the country,” Fusaro said. < Back DERBY LANE ENDS 19-20 MEET Jun 29, 2020 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – For nearly two years, a bull’s-eye has been attached to LK’s Crush N It. The Lashmet kennel standout greyhound has been an All-America first-team selection and national wins champion – both in 2019 – and a winner of five lifetime stakes titles. On Tuesday afternoon, LK’s Crush N It has a target of his own to shoot at during the final performance of the Derby Lane 2019-20 season. A victory in Race 10 would allow the 3-1/2-year-old son of LK’s Now R Never and LK’s All In to tie Floyd kennel’s Shoot The Breeze for top dog honors at the January-to-June meet. It would complete an unprecedented accomplishment at the 95-year-old track. No greyhound is believed to have captured three consecutive meet win titles. “I don’t think it’s ever been done – three consecutive (times) of being the win leader,’’ Derby Lane racing secretary Les Robison said. “It hasn’t been (done) since I’ve been here. . . . and I’ve been around the track since ’71 - either as a patron or employee. “That would be exciting if he could do that. It would just be one more laurel that he would have.’’ LK’s Crush N It, who would raise his career win total to 79 with a victory, enters the Grade A 550-yard event with 14 victories for the meet, one behind Shoot The Breeze – who hasn’t raced since June 13. LK’s Crush N It has won his past two races and drew box 5 in Race 10, slated for 2:47 p.m. The 75-pound dog is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. Trained by kennel manager Ken Deacon, LK’s Crush N It has been Derby Lane’s top dog in each of the past two meets – amassing 50 victories during that span to lead all greyhounds nationally in total wins for 2019. The 550-yard specialist is owned by breeders John and Jill Lashmet of Eaton, Colo. LK’s Crush N It is the third consecutive dog with back-to-back meet win championships, joining Jiminy Reno (2018) and RT’s Bo Jangles (2017) – both from Cal Holland kennel. Other Derby Lane dogs to equal that feat since at least 2004 include Abernathy kennel’s Husker Magic (2014-15), and Venus Espinosa (2012-13) of Patriot kennel. This will be the first meet win title for Shoot The Breeze, a 32-month-old male from a litter by Trent Lee and Danicas Go Daddy. Owned by Charles Haliburton, Shoot The Breeze sprints for kennel owners Randy and Pat Floyd – whose previous meet win leader was Hometown Boy in 2007. The top kennel in wins will be Lester Raines, which entered Monday with an insurmountable 195-172 lead over ABC Racing. It will be Lester Raines’ first championship since 2010. Jennifer Richardson, who started the meet as the kennel manager and trainer, has subsequently moved to Virginia for family reasons with the operation currently being handled by Anthony Diaz. The meet’s fastest times have been clocked by Shoot The Breeze (30.00 seconds at 550 yards) and Lester Raines’ O Ya Diesel (37.01 seconds at 660 yards). The Derby Lane meet was reduced to 131 performances after losing 49 programs because of the coronavirus pandemic. No racing was held from March 20-May 7. Sent to post at 11-1 odds, Mac’s Tayloranne roared out to an early 4-length lead before holding off CET Dirty Dilly by a head at the wire in 30.14. CET Wreckitralph rounded out the trifecta ticket, just 1 ½ lengths back. Completing the final field were Baby Face Nelson, fourth; Go On Horse, fifth; CET Ozzy, sixth; CET Motley Crew, seventh; and Coach Oh Boy, eighth. Breaking from the eight box, RS’s Dark Night rounded the first turn second to Code Red Kennel’s JA’s Croft before taking charge on the backstretch – pulling away to a 5 ½-length victory in 29.81. JA’s Croft took runner up honors while A Ray Kennel’s Mac’s New York rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the Juvenile final finish were RS’s Blue Heaven (Lester Raines), fourth; Mac’s Zhivago (A Ray), fifth; RS’s Prime Time (Lester Raines), sixth; Coach Wonder (Patriot/Taplin), seventh; and Mac’s Evita (A Ray), eighth.
