< Back Year in Review: Highlights from Wheeling’s 2023 racing season Stan Pawloski Jan 2, 2024 In August of 1976, greyhounds chased “Spunky” around the track at Wheeling Island for the very first time as greyhound racing was launched in the Friendly City. Last year marked 47 years of Wheeling greyhound racing and fans can expect another thrilling, fun-filled racing season and more excitement in 2024. Although no open stake races were held in 2023, there were plenty of highlights on the track. Four greyhounds generated excitement by winning six straight races, one sprinter climbed the ladder to Grade AA undefeated, two West Virginia-bred stake events were contested, several greyhounds battled throughout the year for top win honors and several youngsters broke their Maiden and look like future stars. Top greyhound honors went to a pair of sprinters – Blanchard Kennel’s Artex Pumbaa and Charter Kennel’s JSP Rayzendacash, as both posted 22 victories. Next in line were 2022 track win champ Florentine (Steve Sarras Kennel) and Tenacity (Blanchard Kennel) with 21 wins each. The Blanchard Kennel, trained by Chris Maynard, captured the 2023 kennel championship with 640 wins after taking runner up honors to the Lester Raines Kennel the last three years. The Blanchard Kennel won their first Wheeling kennel crown in 2019. The 640 wins by the Blanchard Kennel in 2023 is the most at Wheeling since the ZEZ Kennel posted 645 wins in 1999 and 659 victories in 2000. In the history of Wheeling racing, only 29 greyhounds had moved up the ladder straight to Grade AA after winning their Maiden debut. Now there’s 30 as Hell Bent accomplished the feat last year. The youngster won his first Maiden race in early June before capturing Grades D, C, B and A in successive starts. An August 2021 greyhound out of Konomi-Liz Cambage, Hell Bent races out of the Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel, trained by Jill Spicer and owned by David Strong. The Wheeling record for most victories in a row to start a career is 12 by Kiowa Sweet Trey in 2001. The sprint star won Maiden, Grades D, C, B, A and seven in Grade AA. In the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Championship in late September, CG’s Honesty (Code Red Kennel) rocketed out to the early lead and never looked back in romping to a 7-length victory. Littermate CG’s Sun Storm (Code Red Kennel) took runner up honors while CET Mist (Steve Sarras Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final finish were Wild Blue Bee (Xtrem Hess Racing), fourth; Wild Chomp Dude (Xtrem Hess Racing), fifth; Arroyo Duchess (Code Red), sixth; CG’s Nail Biter (Code Red), seventh; and Arroyo Deon (Code Red), eighth. In the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone (3/8th) Championship in October, Wild Blue Bee bided his time behind the frontrunners early in the race before storming home on the rail to edge out CET Dirty Skinny (Steve Sarras Kennel) by half a length at the wire. Pacesetter CET Marlin (Imark Kennel) settled for third. Completing the final order of finish were CET Dirty Toodls (Steve Sarras Kennel), fourth; TS Woody (Steve Sarras Kennel), fifth; Wild Chomp Dude (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel), sixth; CET Zink (Imark Kennel), seventh; and JAS Strait Aces (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), eighth. The longest winning streak last year was six in a row by four greyhounds – Artex Pumbaa, JSP Hush Money, FGF Duke and CET Dirty Dan (streak started in December 2022 and extended into January 2023). Four other greyhounds won five straight races – Smile N Mean It, Hell Bent, AMF Gotta Go and Tenacity. Several greyhounds captured four straight victories – Artex Pumbaa, Ark RB Heyward, Artex Kusapin, Arkans Pride, Florentine, FF Leroy Brown, Arma Guiness, JSP Rayzendacash, GLS Ondemand, FF Evel Knievel, FF Evolution and FF Vespa. Wheeling will host two West Virginia-bred stakes races again in 2024, the Juvenile and the Panhandle Championship. Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s Wild Blue Bee captured the $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Keystone Championship in October at Wheeling Island. < Back Three Selected for Hall of Fame Induction Stan Pawloski Sep 16, 2025 A record setting greyhound and a pair of racing industry leaders have been tabbed for induction into the Greyhound Hall of Fame this coming fall. David Blair's super sprinter, Bella Infrared along with track officials Tim Leuschner and Dan Luciano will be inducted in October of this year. Whelped in Abilene, Kansas, Bella Infrared was raised on the David Blair farm just a few minutes' drive from the National Greyhound Association. His owner, David Blair said that Infrared was "kind of small, for a male, but was super smart, he always knew what was going on." David has long said that Infrared was the best greyhound he ever raised, or saw, for that matter. Infrared was born on July 3, 2009 and began his racing career with a win in his first official start on January 5, 2011. Just six races later he would reach the top grade of racing (AA) and never drop out of top level competition again in his career. He would win a track leading thirty four races in 2011 including the Southland Hound Madness Stake. He also finished 3rd in the Southland Derby Consolation and Chris Chance Memorial. In October of that year he would break the Southland 5/16 mile course record, the first of three times he would accomplish that feat. He would make 2nd team All American for his efforts in 2011. His 2012 racing season was possibly more impressive. He would repeat as track champion winning thirty seven races. He would capture the 2012 Southland Derby and was a finalist in the Southland RCL Million Dollar Series. His 37 wins included a stretch where he won nineteen races in a row while breaking the track record two more times. His winning time of 31.14 on December 8, 2012 shattered his existing track record stands today as the fastest time ever recorded at Southland for a 5/16 mile race. He was named Captain of the 2012 All American Team. While his stellar racing career is the primary reason why Infrared has been inducted, his brief sire career makes his honor all the more impressive. Infrared produced many outstanding offspring, including numerous stake winners and All-Americans such as Salud Raindrop, FGF Chisum and Kind Cruel Red. He has made his mark around the world as well producing many stakes and group winners in Australia. Longtime track racing official and operator, Tim Leuschner 's love of dogs began at an early age along with his love of greyhound racing when he became a leadout at Mile High Kennel Club in 1968 while attending the University of Colorado. He earned his degree in International Relations and while he never pursued a career in Government, he certainly became an ambassador for greyhound racing. He worked his way up through the ranks in the Racing Department. He also worked in the mutuel departments at Interstate and Cloverleaf Kennel Clubs and did a stint on the maintenance crew at Interstate. in 1972 he became the Racing Secretary at Interstate. From 1972 to 1977 he worked the circuit of tracks owned by the Lindsay/Ross team including Mile High, Pueblo, Sodrac, Interstate and Taunton. In 1977 he was named as the Racing Secretary at the new Lincoln Greyhound Park and by 1986 was promoted to Assistant General Manager at the Rhode Island facility. In 1993 he headed south to become the Director of Simulcasting for the Jacksonville racing circuit. There he helped create one of the largest simulcast networks in the world with the circuit's races being broadcast throughout the U.S. as well as in Mexico, Latin America, the Caribbean and as far away as Hong Kong. He served in that position as well as Director of Industry Relations for the Jacksonville group until his retirement in 2018. Tim also served the greyhound industry in helping to create the annual Greyhound Night of Stars of which he became the host of the television broadcast of the event throughout its tenure. He also traveled the world promoting the sport not only for simulcasting but in speaking to groups around the world such as the World Greyhound Racing Federation, the University of Arizona's Racing Symposium, Greyhound Pets of America and various other racing and welfare related gatherings. He served on the Board of the American Greyhound Track Operators Association for many years including as its President from 2010-2012. He is still a Board member of the American Greyhound Council and was a past President of that organization. He remains a Board member of the Greyhound Hall of Fame and has been a regular at NGA meets for many years. Dedicated to the overall betterment of the sport, Tim has been a staunch supporter of greyhound welfare and adoption throughout his career and has been President of Greyhounds as Pets of Northeast Florida for the past 23 years. He has adopted many greyhounds during his career including All American Burt Road. Another long tenured track official and operator, Dan Luciano has also been tabbed for induction. Dan, a native of Massachusetts, was introduced to the sport when he received a greyhound as a pet in 1965.Not long after that he became a kennel helper for the Discolo Kennel and eventually became the kennel's trainer at Wonderland and Bonita Springs. After leaving the kennel side of the business, Dan embarked on a long career in track management starting as a racing official at Seabrook and working his way up through the ranks, eventually managing at some of the country's top facilities including Geneva Lakes, Dubuque, Plainfield and Phoenix. His time at Phoenix began in 1992 when he was also named President of American Greyhound Racing which represented all of Delaware North's tracks. He was always an active member of The American Greyhound Track Operator's Association and served as its President from 2002 to 2004. Dan is credited to bringing the innovative "stretch vest" racing blanket to America while at Phoenix in 2000. Dan is also credited with the first use of the bone-shaped lure (at Plainfield) which would go on to be used at numerous track around the country. Dan was one of the best track operators in America, in part because he went the extra mile to associate personally and professionally with the greyhound racing community itself. His relationship with the NGA and greyhound owners and breeders helped lead also to his selection to serve on such important boards as the American Greyhound Council and the Greyhound Hall of Fame, where he still sits to this day. As an early greyhound pet owner, Dan has actively supported greyhound adoption programs wherever he worked and is especially proud of his affiliation with Arizona Adopt a Greyhound. Dan and his late wife, Sidra, were owners of pet greyhounds for some 40 years, virtually throughout Dan's lifetime career in racing. Dan was also active in his community wherever he may have been residing during his racing career such as serving on various boards including United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona, the Phoenix Lions Club, Arizona Town Hall and Gateway Community College Citizens Advisory. These three worthy recipients will all be honored in ceremonies at the Hall of Fame in Abilene on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Previous Next

< Back 2021 ALL-WHEELING TEAM SELECTED, ABBI'S GUSTA WIN CAPTAIN Stan Pawloski Feb 7, 2022 Abbi’s Gusta Win has been selected captain of the 2021 all-Wheeling team. The Jacobs Kennel sprint star, owned by Michael Orlandi and trained by Louise Strong, tied for second in wins at Wheeling Island last year with 19 despite missing three months of the racing season. All of his victories were in Grade AA. Abbi’s Gusta Win, who has raced at Wheeling Island his entire career except for three Maiden starts at Southland Greyhound Park in March 2020, posted a five-race and a pair of three-race win streaks in 2021. He was a mark of consistency – hitting the quiniela ticket in 70 percent of his races and having a 76 percent mark in the trifecta and an 84 percent finish on the superfecta ticket. Littermate Abbi’s Frontman made the all-Wheeling team, giving the Jacobs Racing Kennel two spots on the 10-greyhound unit. The Lester Raines Kennel had the most all-Wheeling honorees with four selections – JS Slush Fund, RS’s Dark Night, RS Big D and Teaser’s Tickle. The Blanchard Kennel had two representatives – Frappe and Penrose Boss – while rounding out the team are Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s AD Black Falcon and Charter Kennel’s Oshkosh Heart. The all-Wheeling team was selected by local greyhound historian Robin Reed and Pawloski. The criteria used to determine the selections included number of wins, winning percentage, win streaks, stakes performances and overall records. Accomplishments of the all-Wheeling members follow: ABBI’S GUSTA WIN (37-19-7-2-3) – tied for second in wins, all 19 in Grade AA; had a 5-race win streak and a pair of 3-race win streaks; had 15 wins, 5 seconds, 1 third and 2 fourths in a 23-race stretch; 84 percent superfecta mark; 76 percent trifecta mark. AD BLACK FALCON (51-20-8-5-0) – track win champion, 19 out of 20 victories in Grade AA or TAA 3/8th; had 4-race and 3-race win streaks; in 12-race stretch had 9 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third; 65 percent on the superfecta and trifecta tickets. OSHKOSH HEART (37-19-3-5-3) – tied for second in wins, 13 of 19 victories in Grade AA; one stretch won eight out of nine Grade AA races; had a 5-race win streak and a pair of 3-race win streaks; 81 percent superfecta mark; 68 percent trifecta finish. < Back CET DIRTY DILLY CAPTAINS 2021 ALL STAR TEAM Jim Gartland Mar 1, 2022 West Virginia superstar CET Dirty Dilly has been voted Captain of the 2021 All American team. The annual naming of the All-America team, dates back to 1963. The program pays tribute to the top eight greyhounds nationally. Others named to this year’s squad are: Craigie Delegate (Southland), Arkans Copper (Southland), JS Keephopealive (Southland), WW Got Rhythm (Wheeling/Southland), Killer Tolstoy (IGP/Tri-State), FGF Standin Bear (Southland) and Arkans Mabel (Southland). This year’s second team is comprised of: Teaser's Tickle (Wheeling), Barts Spot On (Southland), Abbi's Gusta Win (Wheeling), AD Black Falcon (Wheeling), JS Slush Fund (Wheeling), Arkans RB Taz (Southland), Casino Boogie (Southland) and KL's Colter (Southland). Heading up this year's team is it's Captain, CET Dirty Dilly (SH Avatar-CET Dirty Nicki) who was the National Win Leader, won multiple stakes and set a track record. Perhaps the most steady and consistent greyhound racing in 2021, Dirty Dilly won 42 races during the year capturing the WVGOBA Sprint and the $100,000 Tri State Challenge along the way. In September, she finished off a ten race win streak by breaking the 5/16 track record. Earlier in the year she had posted a record 16 wins in a row at the Tri State oval. She would finish the year with a 55-42-9-0 record and the well earned reward as Captain of the 2021 AA team. Craigie Delegate (Superior Panama-Craigiecrushnit) Breaking in at Southland in late 2020, Delegate went right up the grade ladder and was winning AA by early February of 2021. In May, he captured the Spring Futurity and followed that up with a victory in the Southland Derby in August. He put together win streaks of 5, 5, 8 and 6 and then picked up the Darby Henry Male Sprint Championship during the Festival of Stakes in October. He was the Southland win leader with 27 wins despite missing the last month of racing. His final stats would read 45-27-6-4. Another Southland star, Arkans Copper (Flying Hydrogen-Arkans Jazzy), makes the team coming off a 14 win season and winning of two Southland stakes; The Darby Henry Female Championship and the Kind & Queen's Stake. A consistent performer, Copper hit the Trifecta in 32 of her 45 starts and was a threat each time she went to post nearly always as a pre race favorite. Her last win came on November 12 but she still managed a 45-14-8-10 record for the year. JS Keephopealive (Superior Panama-CH Keepin Faith) makes the 2021 team as another dominant sprinter from Southland. The red fawn female made the finals of the Southland Derby, Great American Futurity and the Female Sprint Championship and won the Hound Madness Stake. Won five of six rounds each in the Futurity and Hound Madness stakes. She was able to garner 21 wins in 41 starts, good for 2nd most at the West Memphis track. Keephopealive finished the year making the trifecta in 29 starts going 41-21-5-3 on the year. WW Got Rhythm (Superior Panama-WW Oh Baby) broke in at Wheeling in March of last year and quickly moved up the ladder to AA. He was then shipped to Southland and took right to the West Memphis track with two wins and two place finishes in his first four starts. The youngster would compete in Southland Derby qualifying and then go on to a dominant win in the Barry Baldwin Juvenile on Festival of Stakes day. The youngest of this year's team, he recorded 5 wins at Wheeling and 15 at Southland which are included in his overall record of 40-20-7-1. Coming off of a 2020 2nd team All American nod, Killer Tolstoy (Superior Panama-Killer Torina) makes this year's first team after a successful year in which he competed at three different tracks and collected a win in the Iowa Breeder's Cup Championship at Dubuque. His year started off a bit sluggishly at Southland where he managed only a 2nd, 3rd and 4th in seven starts there before heading back to his home turf in Dubuque. He settled right in and only missed the pay sheet in 7 of his 35 starts as well as collecting the big check for the Iowa Breeders Cup. He would move on to Tri State after the IGP season where he would go 10-3-1-2. His overall record for the year was 52-17-11-6. One of two distance stars to make this year's team, FGF Standin Bear (SH Avatar-FGF Jamboree), joins the team off of a stellar 2021. He would make the finals of the Razorback Classic and the Middle distance Consolation on Festival day as well as set a new track record for the 660 yard distance in June, winning by seven lengths in 36.11. A crowd favorite, he went off at odds of more than 3 to 1 in only two of his thirty nine starts. His 14 wins would put him in the top ten at Southland despite missing the last month of the year. His final record was 39-14-3-3. Arkans Mabel (My Bro Fabio-Arkans BD Spring) is another Southland distance star and the second of two for the Darren Henry operation making the 2021 team . Racing almost exclusively at 660 yards, Mabel captured the Middle Distance Championship on Festival day and finished 2nd in the Razorback Classic to her kennelmate Arkans RB Taz. She would reel off six wins in a row and eight of nine at one stretch on her way to a 4th place finish in the win standings at Southland. She finished the year at 44-16-5-8, a 65% in the trifecta percentage. These eight represent the 1st team and will be honored with All-America plaques at the Greyhound Hall Of Fame awards ceremony on Thursday night, Apr. 28, during the NGA Spring Meet in Abilene, KS. Mountaineer Classic Champ, Teaser's Tickle (Bella Infrared-Beautiful Tease) leads the Second Team of All-Americans. She charted a 21-9-2-1 record after breaking in at Wheeling in August including her $100,000 Mountaineer Classic win. Barts Spot O n (KC And All-Barts Imashowoff) makes this year's 2nd team after a fabulous year at Southland continuing where he left off in 2020. He won his first seven starts of the year. He made the finals of the Southland Derby and Male Sprint Championship and finished tied for third in wins at Southland with a 42-18-7-2 record despite missing an entire month of racing due to injury. Abbi's Gusta Win (Superior Panama-Abs Almighty) finished tied for 2nd in wins at Wheeling despite missing almost three months of racing due to various setbacks. He put together win streaks of 5 and 3 and was a betting favorite in nearly every race he ran, rarely going off at more than three to one. His final record was 36-19-7-2. AD Black Falcon (SH Avatar-Hey Hey Mamma) was a distance star at Wheeling in 2021 becoming the win leader at the track with 20 wins, all at 3/8ths of a mile. He started the year off going 9-2-1 in his first 12 starts. He ended the year going 12-6-2-3 prior to being injured in early December. His final tally was 51-20-8-5. Shannon Henry's JS Slush Fund (Superior Panama-JS Speedypebbles) makes the 2nd team as one of the best from Wheeling in 2021. Breaking in late in 2020, Slush Fund moved right up into AA and was consistently one of the best sprinters at the track finishing tied for 2nd in wins with 19. She finished in the trifecta 66% of the time going 50-19-8-6 on the year. Arkans RB Taz (Craigie Whistler-Arkansportabella) owned by Rachelle Henry & Rashad Boyd is the oldest member of the 2nd team and was a super distance runner at Southland winning the Razorback Championship and making the finals of the Middle Distance Championship as part of his 13 win season. He also finished second 12 times and had an overall record of 42-13-12-7. Southland standout Casino Boogie (Djays Octane-Bella Release) was one of the best distance dogs at Southland last year, winning the Ansel Styles Marathon Championship and, in December, broke the track record for 703 yards, a record which had been set by his kennelmate and fellow 2nd team member KL's Colter in August. He was equally tough at 660 yards and ended the year with a record of 42-13-5-11. Completing the 2nd team is the aforementioned KL's Colter (Pat C Clement-KL's Christy). Another star at longer distances, Colter ran mostly marathons while piling up 17 wins in 38 starts and finished 3rd in the Ansel Styles Marathon. He set the track record for the distance in August at 39.07 only to see in broken later by his kennelmate. He finished the year at 41-18-9-4. Previous Next

< Back The NGA Spring Meet 2023 Sunflower State Sprint Stake Jim Gartland Nov 21, 2022 Open to all pups who are age eligible for the Spring meet with no official starts prior to the meet. A minimum of 16 and a maximum of 36 entries will be allowed. Entry fee is $1,000 with $500 of that fee due and payable by January 15, 2023 to reserve a spot (limit four spots per consignor). Remaining entry fee plus standard meet entry fee is due at time of nomination (Thursday prior to the meet). Based on the number of entries, races will be drawn into four, five or six dog fields. Winners in round 1 will face off in round 2; 2nd place finishers will face off in the Flite I and 3rd place finishers will run in the Flite II of round 2.
