- KING & QUEEN STAKE FINAL AT IOWA GREYHOUND PARK | National Greyhound
< Back KING & QUEEN STAKE FINAL AT IOWA GREYHOUND PARK Jul 6, 2020 Gonz Dandelion made every step count on the way to winning the $30,000 King & Queen Stake at the Iowa Greyhound Park Saturday, July 4. “Gonz does not like the one box,” said T And T Kennel trainer Christopher Grieb. “But he ran his race. He got out of the box, broke well and made the turns well.” The charts gave Gonz a box-to-wire performance. The 75-pounder, born Nov. 15, 2017 out of Bella Infared – Jedi Honey Rider, had firm command in the backstretch as his lead was around four lengths. In the far turn and in the homestretch “I was proud of T’s Bree Harison,” said Grieb. “He made a move to close the gap. It was nice to get a one-two finish.” Challenged but not contested, Gonz Dandelion finished with a two-length win in a day’s best time of 31.08 seconds for the 5-16-mile course. Gonz moves to 7-4-0-0 on the season at IGP. T’s Bree Harison, 8-2-5-1, was a comfortable second, two lengths ahead of the rest of the field. “When Gonz got in front,” said Grieb, “I was not bothered by who was behind, it was his race. “We (the T And T Kennel) have a good team here,” added Grieb. “We have great help. We make it go.” The Kings’ points leader FF Lurch (Copper Kettle), 8-2-2-2, rallied in the homestretch to take third place. Fourth, one length back and five lengths off the pace, was JD Tonic (Stidham & Brindle), 10-4-1-0. Disco Moves (Jackson) earned fifth, a half-length ahead of sixth. Disco Moves is 12-2-3-3. AT’s Golden (T And T) squeezed into sixth. Golden is 8-2-2-1. The disappointment came from Jill St. John (Stidham & Brindle), 10-6-1-1. The Queens’ point leader broke sixth and never made a move in finishing seventh. That left Oakland Taunton (Stidham & Brindle),10-2-2-2, last. For the patrons, Gonz Dandelion paid $8.80. $5.80 and $3.00; T’s Bree Harison paid $10.80 and $3.80; FF Lurch paid $3.20; the (1-5) Quiniela paid $43.00; the (1-5-8) Tri-Box paid $137.90; the (1-5-8-4) 10-cents Superfecta paid $126.77. - A ROSY PICTURE FOR DERBY LANE | National Greyhound
< Back A ROSY PICTURE FOR DERBY LANE Sep 8, 2020 Things came up roses for Derby Lane on Kentucky Derby day. The West Florida greyhound track enjoyed the best parimutuel handle on its product in more than two years this past Saturday, when fans watched Authentic upset heavy favorite Tiz the Law via simulcast to give trainer Bob Baffert a record-tying sixth Kentucky Derby win at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. A total of $428,605 was wagered on Derby Lane’s 15-race matinee program with a meet-high 2,443 patrons in attendance. The handle represented a 19.51-percent increase from the previous Kentucky Derby day of $358,636 on May 4, 2019. It was Derby Lane’s best handle since the matinee performance on May 5, 2018, which also featured the Kentucky Derby simulcast. On that afternoon, patrons wagered $480,955 on the Derby Lane product in front of a crowd of 5,109. Derby Lane’s attendance for its Saturday matinee was 48.2 percent lower than the 2019 Kentucky Derby day total of 4,713, but that was expected with the safety precautions taken because of the coronavirus pandemic. Track security staff constantly toured the facility to ensure patrons wore masks. In the Derby Club, every other dining table was made available to ensure a six-foot distance. Derby Lane also opened up more parimutuel wagering stations. Some tellers wore festive Kentucky Derby shirts, and fans came attired with their personal Run for the Roses hats. On the track, Abernathy kennel stood out with four victories as eight of the 14 operations recorded at least one win. Abernathy kennel began Labor Day in a three-way tie for second place in the competitive Derby Lane win standings with Capabal and Nova, each with 98. Three-time kennel champion Everett Racing forged to the top of the group at 99 following a four-win performance on Saturday evening, capping a 12-win week. Reigning kennel champ Lester Raines is in fifth place with 95. Previous Next

- AD BLACK FALCON CAPTURES 2021 WHEELING WIN LEADER CROWN | National Greyhound
< Back AD BLACK FALCON CAPTURES 2021 WHEELING WIN LEADER CROWN Stan Pawloski Jan 17, 2022 In late 2020 after making the final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes, AD Black Falcon moved to the longer 3/8th distance at Wheeling Island. When the Xtrem Hess Racing youngster won two out of his first three 3/8th races by 12 ½ and 11 ½ lengths, it was just a prelude of what was to come in 2021. Fueled by a blazing start from January into April in 2021, AD Black Falcon went on to capture the track win championship with 20 victories. A trio of sprinters – Abbi’s Gusta Win, Oshkosh Heart and JS Slush Fund – all were just a single win behind with 19 apiece. AD Black Falcon’s accomplishments earned him top greyhound honors at Wheeling Island for 2021. Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel operator Jason Hess couldn’t be prouder of his standout. “Black Falcon exceeded all of our expectations and I am so happy and proud of him for what he achieved last year (2021). I never expected him to be among the track’s win leaders,” Hess said. “To be the win leader at Wheeling is a very nice accomplishment. Just a hard-trying greyhound and I’d love to have more like him in the kennel.” A July 2018 greyhound out of SH Avatar-Hey Hey Mamma, AD Black Falcon is the first 3/8th racer to wear the win crown at Wheeling Island since WP’s Cameo in 2010. Distance greyhounds Kiowa Power Pak (2009) and TK Quick Strike (2008) also were tops in victories. Although a sprint stakes finalist in 2020, it was getting tougher for AD Black Falcon to beat top grade sprinters to the first turn, Hess noted. “It was our hope Black Falcon would be able to go to the front in 3/8th and have enough left to hold on in the stretch,” Hess said. “After his first couple starts, he proved to us he could go the distance.” In a stretch of 12 races from mid-January to early April last year, AD Black Falcon had 9 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third. He won four in a row during the hot streak, including victories by 7 ½ and 4 lengths. “Black Falcon was popping the box, he had his timing down,” Hess said. In the summer months AD Black Falcon cooled off a bit, but in late September into October he won five out of eight starts to move into contention for the win championship. “He was a streaky greyhound,” Hess said. “Sometimes his timing was off.” AD Black Falcon’s front-running style was the key to his success in 2021. In his 20 victories, he was first at the escape turn 16 times and went on to win; three times he was second at the escape turn and closed late in the race to win; and once he was fourth at the escape turn before getting up by a length at the wire. “Black Falcon really must have been feeling good the day he closed from fourth,” Hess said. “To be successful, he needed to be near the front early in his races.” Hess credited trainer Jill Spicer and her crew for playing a huge role in AD Black Falcon’s special season. “They did a great job with Black Falcon and deserve all the credit. I know he was one of Jill’s (Spicer) favorite greyhounds in the kennel and she was really happy he was the track win champion,” Hess said. AD Black Falcon, owned by Allan Ertl and Dennis Curry, was retired in December. He has been adopted by a family in North Carolina. In 84 career Wheeling races, AD Black Falcon had 30 wins, 13 seconds, 11 thirds and 4 fourths – a 70 percent mark on the pay sheet. “What stands out is the 50 percent mark on the quiniela ticket,” Hess said. “That’s hard to beat.” While AD Black Falcon topped the leader board with 20 victories, 17 other greyhounds won at least 13 races in 2021 at Wheeling Island. The 2021 Wheeling Island win leaderboard and kennel follows: 20 – AD Black Falcon (Xtrem Hess Racing) 19 – Abbi’s Gusta Win (Jacobs Racing), Oshkosh Heart (Charter), JS Slush Fund (Lester Raines) 17 – Frappe (Blanchard) 16 – Abbi’s Frontman (Jacobs Racing) 14 – O Ya Trisha (Lester Raines), RS Big D (Lester Raines), RS’s Dark Night (Lester Raines), JS In The Money (Rangel), JS Saltythursday (Lester Raines), CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras), KB’s Copy Kat (Charter) 13 – Kells Xterra (Steve Sarras), JS Rob Stone (Blanchard), Mega Felipe (A Ray), Bart Superbowl (Charter), Craigie Deuce (Lester Raines). Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s AD Black Falcon was the track win champion at Wheeling Island in 2021 with 20 victories. The middle distance racer is held by Rhea LaCuesta.
