- STIDHAM CHARGES DOMINATE IOWA BREEDER'S CUP | National Greyhound
< Back STIDHAM CHARGES DOMINATE IOWA BREEDER'S CUP Nov 12, 2020 There definitely was a family feel at the top of the board in the final of the Iowa Breeders’ Cup at Iowa Greyhound Park. JD Elegant, JD Eminence and JD Eclectic finished first, third and fourth. “What a dynamite litter,” said Brian Webb, trainer for Stidham & Brindle Kennel. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime litter. Besides these three, there are two others in grade A.” The trio are from JD Titanium and JD Bombshell, whelped Oct 12, 2018. They also were the top three qualifiers. In the final, Elegant, who has hit the board in 24 of 27 races and has won five of six, broke on top from the 7 box, ahead of her littermates and Slide Off. She held a short lead entering the first turn and slowly pulled away for a five-length win in 31.63. “There was a little jam behind her,” Webb said. “Once she gets the lead, she’s tough to run down.” Boeckenstedt Kennel’s BGR True Grit, from Boc’s Hank Jr. and Boc’s Destiny, overcame a slow start with a strong rush but was unable to overtake Elegant, who has 12 wins this season. Last year, the Stidham & Brindle entry, JD Revelation, lost by a nose to a hard-charging Revin Devon. The brindle from Copper Kettle Kennel reached the final again, finishing sixth. “We lost by a nose last year,” Webb said. “This year we were definitely ready. It’s a fantastic way to end the year.” Elegant paid $8, $3.40 and $2.60. The victory also held special meaning. “This was a big win for Jon (Stidham, owner),” Webb said. “He’s never won this one. The win is dedicated to his mom, who passed away this spring.” The purse is estimated at $229,000. The winner receives 40%. The remainder is broken down by order of finish: 20%, 10%, 8%, 7%, 6%, 5% and 4%. In the consolation race, BGR J Capt Quick broke well and never trailed to grab the title. “Getting the one-hole was key,” said Phil Stapleton, trainer. “He wants the inside.” He held firm to the rail and pulled away for a 3-length win. “Once he got around the turn he was able to get control,” Stapleton said. The red male, from Djays Octane and Boc’s Sweeney, posted a 31.37. He has hit the board in 26 of 32 races and paid $10.20, $6.20 and $3.20. T’s CaptPhasma placed, BGR Goingoingone showed and Babinov fourth. The consolation race purse is $7,500, with $3,000 to the winner. The remainder is based on order of finish: $1,500, $750, $600, $525, $450, $375 and $300. Previous Next

- SENATE MAJORITY WHIP RYAN WELD'S RETIRED GREYHOUND BASKS IN THE ATTENTION DURING VISIT TO WEST VIRGINIA CAPITOL | National Greyhound
< Back SENATE MAJORITY WHIP RYAN WELD'S RETIRED GREYHOUND BASKS IN THE ATTENTION DURING VISIT TO WEST VIRGINIA CAPITOL Mar 8, 2021 Members of the West Virginia Legislature and their staffs let a sleeping dog lie this week and stepped over the retired racing greyhound snoozing on the floor in Senate Majority Whip Ryan Weld’s office. Weld, R-Brooke, adopted Ava the greyhound, which resides with Weld and his wife Alex in Wellsburg. This past week, she made the trip to Charleston with Weld and took up residence in his office at the Capitol. During her stay, people got to know her, learn about racing greyhounds, and even get some animal-provided stress therapy during a hectic week at the Legislature, Weld said. “She is here — she’s the belle of the ball,” he said. “We have had more visitors — people just stopping by to see her, the staff and people working in the building. “The building is quiet. It’s weird. It’s not a normal session. Her being here gives them (staffers) something to keep them company in the office.” And Ava has been very receptive of the attention, according to Weld. She greets each visitor to the office, and often lays in the doorway between Weld’s office and the entryway so she can take in all the action. “She loves it,” Weld said. “Ava is the most relaxed, calm, laid-back dog. She is a very, very calm and relaxed dog by her demeanor. There were four people in my office one day this week. When they left they all had to step over her. She doesn’t care.” Weld takes her for walks and they visit other offices. She also gets stopped by people along the way who want to greet and pet her. “This has been a good experience for her, and a good experience for the staff having her here,” he said. “Sometimes this can be a stressful place to be. A lot of law schools have a therapy dog in their libraries around finals time. “Someone can take their five minutes, come down and visit, and maybe de-stress a bit.” Visitors also get the chance to learn a little about racing greyhounds, and how they look, feel and act, Weld said. “I don’t think most people have ever been around one before,” he said. “I had not, until I went to the Beech Bottom Kennels in 2019 and that’s where we met her.” He thinks people were surprised by her demeanor. “I might be biased, but she is a good-looking dog,” Weld said. “They get to see just how soft their hair is, and how much they like to be petted.” Ava didn’t get to meet any lobbyists wanting to abolish greyhound racing in West Virginia, as none appear to be in Charleston this session, he said. Weld said those meeting her, though, can see she is a happy and well-adjusted canine “If there was any sort of mistreatment of dogs, it certainly doesn’t show with Ava,” Weld said. “She doesn’t shy away from people. She doesn’t meet a stranger and goes up to everybody. “ Previous Next

< Back Artex Pumbaa named 2023 best sprinter; best distance dog goes to JS Comin Undone. Jim Gartland Mar 14, 2024 In the age of less racing opportunities, no stake race programs, and a much smaller pool of competitors, the NGA awards singling out the best of the best at each distance take on a new look for 2023. Historically labeled the Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards, 2023 honorees will simply be tabbed as America's best sprinter and router. A Wheeling speedster and Tri State distance star have been chosen as recipient's of these awards for 2023. Artex Pumbaa and distance star, JS Comin Undone have been named as recipients of the two awards and will be honored at Hall of Fame ceremonies during the spring meet on Thursday, April 25. A 2020 son of Flying Hydrogen-Arkans Cancer , Artex Pumbaa finished with 22 wins for the year tying him for the Wheeling lead with JSP Rayzendacash. He finished in the money in 82% of his starts. He would finish the season with a 51-22-8-6 record, He was also named Captain of the 2023 All Star team. Congratulations to Joe, Rachelle and all the connections of Artex Pumbaa ! JS Comin Undone JS Comin Undone was an almost unanimous choice for the best distance dog in the land award finishing the year with 19 distance wins at Tri State despite missing over a full month of racing. Comin Undone is a December 2020 son of Show On The Road-CH Keepin Faith. He was raised and is owned by Shannon Henry. Racing exclusively at 3/8ths of a mile, he moved to Tri State after the closing of Southland and immediately took to the Charleston oval winning his first AA after just a few starts. Racing for the Lester Raines Kennel, he finished in the money in 30 of his 37 starts. His record for the year was 37-19-5-4-2 and included 5 in a row in a September stretch, winning one of those races by 12-1/2 lengths! Congratulations to JS Comin Undone, and all his connections! These two will be honored at the awards ceremonies program at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Thursday night, April 25, during the NGA's Spring Meet. Previous Next
