- CET DIRTY DILLY AND ARKANS MABEL SELECTED FOR TOP NGA AWARDS FOR 2021 | National Greyhound
< Back CET DIRTY DILLY AND ARKANS MABEL SELECTED FOR TOP NGA AWARDS FOR 2021 Jim Gartland Mar 23, 2022 A West Virginia speedster and a Southland distance star have been chosen as recipient's of the NGA’s annual Awards; CET Dirty Dilly winning the 51st Annual NGA Rural Rube Award as the nation’s top sprinter for 2021, and Arkans Mabel capturing the Flashy Sir Award as the best distance greyhound in the land. Dirty Dilly edged out Craigie Delegate in voting for this year's Rural Rube, while the Flashy Sir was much closer with Mabel nosing out kennelmate Arkans RB Taz by a single vote to grab the award. A 2018 daughter of SH Avatar-CET Dirty Nicki , CET Dirty Dilly is a West Virginia bred who lit up the Tri State oval over the course of the year, setting records and winning stakes. She ended up leading the nation in wins with a total of 42 for the year. She captured the West Virginia Owners and Breeder's Sprint as well as the $100,000 Tri State Challenge and, along the way, set the 550 yard track record Tri State running a blistering 29.23 back in September. She was also voted Captain of the All American team by the NGA. CET Dirty Dilly Owned and raced by Carl Tomblin II, Dilly was the most consistent sprinter in the land over the entire year. She won her first start in January and from there would win 41 more times including finishing off a ten race win streak by breaking the 5/16 track record. Earlier in the year she had posted a record 16 wins in a row at the Tri State oval. Incredibly, from March 17 to December 30, she ran worse than 2nd only one time (4th). Dilly would finish the year with a 55-42-9-0-1 record, missing the pay sheet only three times the entire year! A much deserved award for this fabulous sprinter. Congratulations to Carl Tomblin and all the connections of CET Dirty Dilly . Runner-up in the Rural Rube voting was Lester Raines and John Draper's Craigie Delegate . This son of Superior Panama-Craigiecrushinit picked up three stake victories in 2021 and finished the year with 27 wins against the best at Southland. He captured the Southland Juvenile, Darby Henry Male Sprint and the Southland Derby while also grabbing the win title at the West Memphis track. Delegate was raised in Abilene on the Steven Boyd farm. Others receiving notable votes were Suzanne Blair's Teaser's Tickle and Shannon Henry's JS Keephopealive . Voting was much closer for the top spot in the Flashy Sir contest. Only three greyhounds received double digit votes and were separated by a total of two votes total between them. Arkans Mabel won out by one vote over Arkans RB Taz with Goddessofthehunt in third just another vote behind. Arkans Mabel is a brindle son of My Bro Fabio-Arkans BD Spring and was a Southland distance star for the Darren Henry operation. Racing almost exclusively at 660 yards, Mabel captured the Middle Distance Championship on Festival day and finished 2nd in the Razorback Classic to her kennelmate Arkans RB Taz . She would reel off six wins in a row and eight of nine at one stretch on her way to a 4th place finish in the win standings at Southland. She finished the year at 44-16-5-8, a 65% in the trifecta percentage. She is the epitome of a distance star as she ran only one official race less than 660 yards in 2021. Arkans Mabel Mabel , who was also named to the 2021 All American team, is owned by Darren & Rachele Henry and raced for them at Southland. Congratulations to all her connections! The 51st Annual NGA Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards will be presented at the awards ceremonies program at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Thursday night, April 28, during the NGA's Spring Meet. < Back PBKC - ROUND 5 QUALIFYING FOR THE $100,000 LEGACY GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP Nov 30, 2020 Round five qualifying action for our biggest in-house stake race in our 88-year history, the $100,000 Legacy Grand Championship takes place Wednesday afternoon, December 2. The top 32-point earners from the first four rounds will compete Wednesday afternoon with the top 16-point earners advancing to the semifinals Saturday afternoon, December 5. The top eight-point earners following the semifinals will compete in the Palm Beach Kennel Club $100,000 Legacy Grand Championship finale on Saturday evening, December 12. The eight semifinalists who did not make the final will compete in the Andrew Holmes Memorial Award Feature on Legacy night. Points carryover throughout the entire stake series. Qualifying races will be held in races 10, 12, 14 and 15. A quick rundown of Wednesday afternoon’s round five events: Race 10 : This qualifier is going to be a battle of the early speedsters, #4 Old Town Road (Superior Panama – Awesome Fling, Janie Carroll) and #7 Jax Blow Pop (Stealintheshow – Jax Pop The Tab, D. Q. Williams). Others to keep an eye on via good positions, #1 Pat C Paul (SH Avatar – KC Saucey Sis, Koppe, Staats & Collins) and #8 KBR Ariel (Super Lee – HS Turbine, Rader Racing). Race 12 : This event features the Legacy entry who put an end to Bug Brush’s qualifying win streak, #8 Steve Flemmi (Pat C Clement – Winta Garoppolo, Rader Racing). Flemmi did draw a good post position, but most likely will have to come from off the pace against possible early race leaders #1 Abbi’s Frontman (Superior Panama – ABS Almighty, Janie Carroll) and #7 Open Throttle (Need My Moneynow – MW’s Morrigan, D. Q. Williams). Race 14 : There are a quartet of Greyhounds who drew nice positions that have a legitimate opportunity to score points and advance them to the semifinals, including #1 FF Dive Bar (Pat C Sabbath – FF Boom Boom, Suncoast), #3 Thrill U (Need My Moneynow – Miss Kate, D. Q. Williams), #5 KBJ Powerplay (Time Flies – Roann Danseuse, Rader Racing) and #8 Flying Austrian (Barcelona Boss – Flying Bosnian, Rader Racing). Race 15 : This qualifier features the leading point-earner, #4 Bug Brush (SH Avatar – Flying Lipstick, Lester Raines). Bug Brush had his eight-consecutive victories win streak snapped last Saturday by Steve Flemmi. Some challenges may lay ahead this Wednesday afternoon as he faces the strong-closing #1 B’s Americano (SH Avatar – Oaks Mocha, Janie Carroll) and the early speedsters #6 Opal Long (Pat C Clement – Winta Garoppolo, Rader Racing) and longshot #8 Mister Red Rader (Flying Titanium – Rip N Runnin, B & B Racing). Post time for the first race Wednesday afternoon is 1:00pm. Point System: - 1st - 15 points, 2nd - 10 points, 3rd - 6 points, 4th - 4 points, 5th - 3 points, 6th - 2 points, 7th - 1 point, 8th - 0 points. Previous Next

- HELL BENT'S FAST START EARNS SPOT IN WHEELING HISTORY | National Greyhound
< Back HELL BENT'S FAST START EARNS SPOT IN WHEELING HISTORY Stan Pawloski Aug 7, 2023 NOTE: August marks 47 years of greyhound racing at Wheeling. In conjunction with the anniversary, this column will feature articles related to the track’s history. Today, greyhounds reaching Grade AA undefeated during their careers are highlighted. Heading into the 2023 racing season at Wheeling Island, 29 greyhounds had climbed the ladder straight to Grade AA after winning their Maiden debut. Now there’s 30. The latest to accomplish the feat in the 47-year history of Wheeling Downs/Island is Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s Hell Bent. The youngster won his first Maiden race in early June before capturing Grades D, C, B and A in successive starts. An August 2021 greyhound out of Konomi-Liz Cambage, Hell Bent is trained by Jill Spicer and owned by David Strong. He finished fourth in his first Grade AA trip. Of those 30 greyhounds, nine went on to capture at least their first start against Grade AA company. The first Wheeling greyhound to go straight to Grade AA undefeated was Royal Onyx in 1978, winning his first five starts – Maiden and Grades C, B, A and AA. The last racer to accomplish the feat before Hell Bent was JS Wanna Bee in 2020, capturing her first five races – Maiden and Grades D, C, B and A. The Wheeling record for most victories in a row to start a career is 12 by Kiowa Sweet Trey in 2001. The sprint star won Maiden, Grades D, C, B, A and seven in Grade AA. Kiowa Sweet Trey broke the mark of 10 straight career-opening wins by Onie Reid in 1985-86. Onie Reid was victorious in Maiden, Grades C, B, A and six in Grade AA. Although Kiowa Sweet Trey and Onie Reid are regarded as two of the best greyhounds to ever grace the Wheeling oval, most of the racers who reached Grade AA undefeated weren’t superstars. It’s a rare feat as only 30 greyhounds have turned the trick since the track opened on Aug. 18, 1976. Following are the nine greyhounds who raced straight to Grade AA undefeated and then won at least their first top grade start, year accomplished and number of career-opening victories: Kiowa Sweet Trey – July through December 2001; won 12 in a row; Maiden, D, C, B, A, seven in AA. Onie Reid – December 1985 thru January 1986; won 10 straight; Maiden, C, B, A, six in AA. Final Vote – June 2013 thru July 2013; seven wins; Maiden, C, B, A, three in AA. Itsa Screamer – November 1998 thru December 1998; six wins; Maiden, C, B, A, two in AA. AMF Bone Bruise – April 2009 thru May 2009; six wins; M, D, C, B, A, AA. Slatex Johnny – November 2003 thru December 2003; six wins; M, D, C, B, A, AA. Soul Cipher – December 2000 thru January 2001; six wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A, AA. Iruska Zederiah – January 1999 thru February 1999; five wins; M, C, B, A, AA. Royal Onyx – May 1978 thru June 1978; five wins; M, C, B, A, AA. Following are the 21 greyhounds who climbed the ladder straight to Grade AA, but did not capture their initial top grade race, year accomplished and number of career-opening victories: Hell Bent – June 2023 thru July 2023; five wins, Maiden, D, C, B, A. JS Wanna Bee – July 2020 thru August 2020; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Atascocita Sig – March 2016 thru April 2006; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. WW Ruff Enough – October 1998 thru November 1998; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. KB’s Try This On – June 2013; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Mansfield Hollow – July 2011 thru August 2011; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Go Bon Jitterbug – November 2009 thru January 2010; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Mac’s Wynken – June 2010 thru July 2010; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Bella Daucus – November 2009 thru December 2009; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. USS Cool Luke – November 2008 thru December 2008; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Shonn – October 2009 thru November 2009; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. Kiowa Power Pak – June 2008; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. Pat C Die Hard – March 2003; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. Mocan Rightaway – December 1997; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. She’s A Dreamer – September 1993; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. Chartman – January 1993; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. Papa Tom – December 1992; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. KC’s Okie Dokie – April 1992 thru May 1992; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. Gull’s Manny – April 1988; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. Gabe Grand – November 1984 thru December 1984; four wins: Maiden, C, B, A. Erin’s Smile – March 1983 thru April 1983; four wins; Maiden, C, B, A. - DERBY LANE COMPLETES FIRST MONTH BACK | National Greyhound
< Back DERBY LANE COMPLETES FIRST MONTH BACK Aug 3, 2020 The first month in the July-to-December meet at Derby Lane ended this past Friday with a logjam atop the greyhound win standings. Nova kennel handles two of the four dogs tied for the top spot with four victories each, including Hi Noon Ruger and Hi Noon Ricochet. Kells Ireland of Everett Racing kennel and Kaias Dark Star of Floyd kennel also have four wins. Six greyhounds are only one victory off the pace with three victories apiece: Lashmet kennel’s LK’s Crush N It and LK’s Molinari; Kells Xterra of Everett Racing kennel; JS Hunny Bee of Lester Raines kennel; Atascocita Sure of Watson Racing kennel; and Tail Spin of Nova kennel. Hi Noon Ruger has been the most consistent athlete among the win leaders with four victories and two seconds from six starts for kennel owner Hans Limmer and trainer Missy Kubitz. Hi Noon Ricochet has four wins and one second from seven starts. Kells Ireland has four victories, one second and one third from seven outings for kennel owner Kelly Everett and trainer Kelsie Gubbels. Kaias Dark Star has won four of five starts for kennel operators Pat and Randy Floyd, who is the trainer. Nova kennel’s Hi Noon Recoil has clocked the meet’s fastest time of 30.26 seconds at 550 yards. Penrose Ronnie of Cal Holland kennel has the best time of 37.54 seconds on the 660-yard course. Reigning kennel champion Lester Raines has bolted out to a 13-win lead in the kennel standings. Under the guidance of trainer Anthony Diaz, Lester Raines enjoys a 60-47 edge over both Abernathy and Capabal. Nova is fourth at 45 and Everett Racing is next with 41. Lester Raines also leads in starts with 322, six more than Watson Racing. Derby Lane features seven weekly performances with matinee racing Monday through Saturday, and a Saturday evening card. - LEAP DAY ALL-DISTANCE CARD | National Greyhound
< Back LEAP DAY ALL-DISTANCE CARD Feb 28, 2020 What a great Saturday evening we have for you for LEAP year. It happens once every four years, so we though we would add 4 other stakes distances to the mix and get an ALL Distance card for everyone to wager on. You get to see stakes events over 330, 550, 660, 770, and 990 yards, and that includes 2 semi-final-round of the 2020 bestbet Sprint Classic. If that was not enough, we will be running our Leap Year Loot promotion where we will be giving away loads of cash! Let’s take a closer look at the races and see if we can get you cashing some tickets this Saturday at bestbet Jacksonville. Leap Day All Distance Evening – Saturday February 29, 2020 Race 2 – (330 Yards) – Super sprint coming your way and there is no better early speeder than JS Range Rover. This greyhound can get to the front on any field and this one is NOT chalked full of grade A’s. Expect him to be pressed, but on the lead, he wins. Prompting the pace will be the other inside ankle burners. Mi Bronc Buster is a promising pup that is not just fast, but he has his beloved rail too. Jay Abu is more rusher than breaker, so see the instant lead won’t happen, but he still should be in the mix. And don’t forget about Misterbythatmuch. Another strong early threat that is well posted and could upset. (3-1-4-2) Race 4 – (990 Yards) – From the shortest course to the longest, the super-marathon runners make their way into the card once again. You never pick against the Lashmet Kennel in this race as they have won the last 2 times, we have run it. They always seem to dominate and LK’s Dimingus gets the nod tonight. RS Libbys Pick has the class edge on everyone else and the rail which makes her dangerous. Like the rest though, just don’t know if she can go this far. WW Aces Of Aces is a good steady runner with good class lines that might be able to contend over the route, and Watch Me Grin might not look that good on paper, but the gears he has late might just come in handy over the added, added distance event. If you are looking for a longshot, pick the Cheshire cat from the middle post. (6-1-7-5) Race 5 – (550 Yards) – Semi-Finals 2020 bestbet Sprint Classic – Talk about your tough races. This one is loaded to the brim with tip top talent and it is going to be highly contested from the get-go. Obviously Pat C News will bomb to the lead and control this race to the stretch but getting home a winner could be a tricky proposition in this race. WHY? The fast as I want to be runner, WW Blazing Crest is right next door and can outbreak, or, run down, News if his head is on right. Recently he has been MONEY, and tonight I the trend continues from a better post. Double winners Penrose Boss and LK’s Effingham are no slouch themselves as both get good post position and can threaten a pace from close or far. (4-5-2-7) Race 7 – (660 Yards) – I see this race looking like the last one over this distance, the finals of the 2020 Orange Park Derby. WP’s Twistedlady is back from a couple of efforts over 550 for the stakes and now gets back at home over 660 yards. She loves the outside, she won the stakes from the 8 box, and I expect her break to return. She will be pressed early by Arby from the rail. This solid grade A early speeder will be on or near the lead in the early stages of this race, but late he just won’t be able to hang with the champ. Fellow finalist Fakeit To Makeit always gives her all in each and every start. A solid chaser, she should factor in the money throughout in this effort, and don’t forget WW Frankie D. You might not know his name, but you need to pay attention. He is a solid grade A that can close well over the round and finally gets out of the 5 box. If he gets loose, he could be upset minded tonight. (5-1-6-7) Race 9 – (770 Yards) – Another wide-open race and only a couple of greyhound have run this far in this field. Class over the rest, so you have to like the grade A’s on the outside of the racetrack. LK’s I Got This looks the part. A solid grade A winner that is not short over the 660 yards course and can dominate up front when she gets loose early. The 8 box with no speed around early, helps her get it done. Pat C Woozy is hot off a win and can flat out fly late when he is not impeded early on. Don’t expect to see her early, but late you know that she will make her presence known. Dutch Bally might lack class, but has the raw late speed needed to be effective over this distance, and KW Cassadee Pope is a solid chasing plugger that has run 770 before and knows how to stay in the money. Look for another superfecta finish tonight. (8-7-3-6) Race 11 – (550 Yards) – Semi-Finals 2020 bestbet Sprint Classic – The other semi-final round race and this one is just as tough as the other. Easi Conroy has to be the one to beat here. He has won 3 straight races, and 5 of his last 6 starts, and took down super pup Pat C Lookie Last time out. He has the 1 box and I don’t see anything working against him. He will have to be on the top of his game, but an undefeated run through the rounds is within his reach. Speaking of Lookie, she is back in with Conroy again and gets a chance at revenge. This double winner in the stakes was a mere couple of lengths off of the track record in round number 1. Her blazing speed could be a difference maker, especially if she can outbreak Conroy from a great middle post. Others to consider include Lookie’s kennelmate Pat C Adieu and Super C Addison. Adieu looks to rebound after a rough trip last time out and Addison is never out of any race that she runs in. Both have the skills to score, might just need a little help to get it done in this effort against this talented field of greyhounds. (4-1-6-5) Previous Next
- SLEEK 16 - HOUND MADNESS | National Greyhound
< Back SLEEK 16 - HOUND MADNESS Shane Bolender Mar 19, 2021 After two rounds and 48 greyhounds eliminated, the “Hound Madness” Stakes whittled down to 16 greyhounds remaining after action on Thursday at Southland Casino & Racing. The West Region still has #1 seed AIR ACE in the mix, after the black male advanced in the opening round by beating #16 seed WHAT COMES NEXT and then winning his match against #8 seed BUG BRUSH to set up a match with the Cinderella story of this part of the bracket, #13 seed RAFE UP THERIVER. “RAFE”, racing for Bussmann-Balakas, LLC and trained by Kelly Everett squeaked by in the opening round by defeating #4 seed ATASCOCITA KERNS and followed that up by beating #5 seed MONSTER BOX to set up the show down on Monday with the region’s top seed. The other matchup in this region will be a “chalk” battle as #2 seed ARKANS PHERKAD (Darren Henry Kennel) rolled to victories over #15 seed GOOD WIN BOB in the opening round and then followed that up by beating #10 seed CTW OREO TRUFFLE. The #3 seed, PAT C RAM ROD coasted over #14 seed BGR SPOTTED COW and #11 seed OSHKOSH TOYE. Unless there is a major upset with the top seed on Monday, this side of the bracket is guaranteed to have no worse than a #1 vs. a #3 seed for a spot in the Furry Four. The Midwest Region has been the scene of upset carnage, with only the #1 seed, CRAIGIE DELAGATE looking like the best greyhound in the region after two rounds. The sixty-nine pound male trained by Monte Hoopes has won 7 of his last 8 races overall and cruised over #16 seeded AB ON THE ROCKS and #9 seed GONZ CANELO. He will face a dangerous #13 seed in AMF URUGUAY who dispatched #4 seed L’S BOZ in the opening round and #5 seed ARKANS ZINC in round 2. The bottom half of the Midwest region will be a battle of two middle seeds in #6 seed TMC’S SWEETCRAIG and #10 seed BOOTS RANDOLPH. The former took care of #11 seed KEY PLAYER in the opening round before pulling off a bit of an upset victory over #3 seed JS PRETTY FLY in round 2. BOOTS RANDOLPH’s opening round victory over #7 seed SUPERIOR PARKER didn’t raise many eyebrows, but the victory over #2 seed FGF MATHIAS in round 2 definitely perked some interest. The right side of the bracket containing the East and South Regions have been havens for “madness” with plenty of upsets. No #1 seeds remain in those regions, but both #2 seeds are hanging on strong. In the East, the biggest upset of the second round came here when #8 seed CTW CHIP N DALE (Robert Thorne, LLC) knocked off #1 seed and multiple stakes champion JS FLAMIN ACE to advance to the round of 16. He will face #5 seed ELIZA FRASER (Gloria Dorsey, LLC) who took care of business by knocking out #12 seed GONZ DANDELION in the opening round and #13 seed BARTS WILD GOOSE in round 2. The bottom half of that bracket will see #11 seed KB’S ROGUE (A Ray Kennel), who knocked out #6 seed HUMBLE YOURSELF in the opening round and got by #14 seed GO BON MAYHAM in round two get to go head to head against #2 seed JS KEEPHOPEALIVE (Lester Raines Kennel). Interesting note that in the first round, KB’S ROGUE actually won by a head over JS KEEPHOPEALIVE in the overall race of eight they were in together, but they were not bracketed against each other at the time. With just a four dog field for each of the four races in this upcoming round, this could prove key to a possible upset once again. The South Region will have at least one guaranteed Cinderella in the “GREYT 8” round as #9 seed KB’S MC QUEEN (Charter Kennel) will face off against #13 seed XM STRIDE N (T and T Kennel). Both these greyhounds were helped some along the way, with KB’S MC QUEEN getting to face #16 seed BYNGE DRINKIN after that greyhound pulled pff one of the greatest upsets in “Hound Madness” history when he knocked off #1 seed ARKANS RB TAZ in the opening round. XM STRIDE N got to face #12 seed WAGGING THE DOG when that greyhound pulled off an upset of #5 seed FLYING RAPIDFIRE in the opener. If XM STRIDE N advances on Monday, it will be the highest seed in the GREYT 8 round in the past six years. The other half of the South Region is more “normal” as two chalks set to battle it out. #2 seed ARKASKA KAREN (Darren Henry) breezed through #15 seed MR. MONEY BAGS and #10 seed IMARK BOOG in the first two rounds, while #3 seed ALADDIN (A Ray Kennel) took care of #14 seed KB’S AXELROD and #11 seed GUTHRUM to set up a good race between them next round. Catch all the action of this year’s “HOUND MADNESS” Stakes, with the “SLEEK 16” round this Monday. There will be four races of four greyhounds each with simple win and exacta wagering on each of those four races. The “GREYT 8” round will feature four match races on March 27 with the winners of those four races comprising the “FURRY FOUR” round on April 2. The “Hound Madness” head’s up match race for the championship will be contested on Friday, April 9th. Previous Next

- $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC FINAL PREVIEW, RACE ANALYSIS | National Greyhound
< Back $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC FINAL PREVIEW, RACE ANALYSIS Oct 22, 2021 Blanchard Kennel’s Penrose Boss heads up a solid field for the Saturday afternoon final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic at Wheeling Island. The 3-year-old sprinter had two victories and two seconds in the four qualifying round races to accumulate a leading 50 points. Penrose Boss finished fourth in the 2020 Mountaineer Classic championship final. Three kennels – Blanchard, Lester Raines and Jacobs Racing – each have two greyhounds in the final while the Imark and Steve Sarras kennels have one finalist. Completing this year’s championship final field are Teaser’s Tickle (Lester Raines Kennel), 46 points; Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), 45 points; Abbi’s Eagle (Jacobs Racing Kennel), Ding Dong Ditch (Imark Kennel) and CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel), 37 points each; Abbi’s Frontman (Jacobs Racing Kennel) and RS’s Dark Night (Lester Raines Kennel), 34 points each. Abbi’s Eagle and Abbi’s Frontman are littermates. Post positions for the final, from the rail out, follow: 1—Teaser’s Tickle, 2—CTW Black Forest, 3—Abbi’s Eagle, 4—RS’s Dark Night, 5—Penrose Boss, 6—Ding Dong Ditch, 7—Frappe, 8—Abbi’s Frontman. The winning greyhound in the championship final will earn $42,000. The complete purse breakdown is second, $18,000; third, $13,000; fourth, $10,000; fifth and sixth, $5,500 each; and seventh and eighth, $3,000 each. The stakes final will be Race 12 on the Saturday matinee race card. Following are capsule looks at the finalists: 1—TEASER’S TICKLE (Lester Raines Kennel, trainer Joel Roden) – had three straight impressive victories by a combined 23 lengths in the qualifiers after a seventh in the first round; one of the youngest greyhounds in the final, the pup broke his Maiden in August and has won eight out of his 13 career races. 2—CTW BLACK FOREST (Steve Sarras Kennel, trainer Barb Long) – had two wins, a third and an eighth in the early rounds; the frontrunner went to the lead in three out of his four qualifying races, all from inside posts; made the final after returning to racing in September after being off for three months with an injury. 3—ABBI’S EAGLE (Jacobs Racing Kennel, trainer Louise Strong) – had two wins, a fourth and a sixth in the qualifying round races; while more of a closer from just off the pace, has gone to the front on occasion; also off for three months in the summer rehabbing an injury before coming back in September. 4—RS’S DARK NIGHT (Lester Raines Kennel, trainer Joel Roden) – had a win, a second, a third and a sixth in the qualifying races; captured the West Virginia-bred Juvenile championship last month; not a ton of box speed, but possesses a power rush to the first turn and finishing speed; prefers to race on the outside. 5—PENROSE BOSS (Blanchard Kennel, trainer Sarah Blanchard) – had two victories and two seconds in the qualifiers to top all the finalists with 50 points; needs to find room early in the race, does have some closing speed; has been a mark of consistency, hitting the pay sheet (top four) in 14 out of his last 15 trips. 6—DING DONG DITCH (Imark Kennel, trainer DiAnn Derr) – had a win, two seconds and a sixth in the preliminary round races; probably the biggest surprise to earn a spot in the stakes final; raced from all inside posts in the qualifiers, so the midtrack hole will be a challenge; will need to pop the box to have a shot. 7—FRAPPE (Blanchard Kennel, trainer Sarah Blanchard) – had two wins, a second and a fourth in the early rounds; multi-dimensional – has the ability to go to the front or come from behind; prefers an inside post, but had two nice efforts from the five hole in the early rounds; needs to outbreak the rail crashing eight. 8—ABBI’S FRONTMAN (Jacobs Racing Kennel, trainer Louise Strong) – had two wins and two sixths in the preliminary round races; earned his spot in the final with a win from a favorable one box in the semifinals; two sixth place finishes in the qualifiers were from the outside, so post position not too kind. RACE ANALYSIS: One thing is certain about this year’s Mountaineer Classic final – it’s wide open as many of the greyhounds have drawn less than favorable posts for their running styles. One greyhound, however – CTW Black Forest – has drawn a preferred inside post position and should break sharp from the box, move to the rail and rush to the early lead. Greyhounds on each side of CTW Black Forest – Teaser’s Tickle and Abbi’s Eagle – are in line to get trips behind the frontrunner. One of those two could claim the championship as CTW Black Forest has shown a tendency to be a tad short in the homestretch but still looms as a ticket play. Don’t count out Frappe, although she would prefer an inside hole. In four out of her last five races, Frappe has been first or second at the first turn with three of those races from the difficult five box. If she hits it from the seven post, things will get interesting. All of these greyhounds are talented or they wouldn’t be in the final, but each will need a little luck on their side as well. Congrats to all the finalists and connections and good luck in the championship. Previous Next
