  • A ROSY PICTURE FOR DERBY LANE | National Greyhound

< Back A ROSY PICTURE FOR DERBY LANE Sep 8, 2020 Things came up roses for Derby Lane on Kentucky Derby day. The West Florida greyhound track enjoyed the best parimutuel handle on its product in more than two years this past Saturday, when fans watched Authentic upset heavy favorite Tiz the Law via simulcast to give trainer Bob Baffert a record-tying sixth Kentucky Derby win at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. A total of $428,605 was wagered on Derby Lane’s 15-race matinee program with a meet-high 2,443 patrons in attendance. The handle represented a 19.51-percent increase from the previous Kentucky Derby day of $358,636 on May 4, 2019. It was Derby Lane’s best handle since the matinee performance on May 5, 2018, which also featured the Kentucky Derby simulcast. On that afternoon, patrons wagered $480,955 on the Derby Lane product in front of a crowd of 5,109. Derby Lane’s attendance for its Saturday matinee was 48.2 percent lower than the 2019 Kentucky Derby day total of 4,713, but that was expected with the safety precautions taken because of the coronavirus pandemic. Track security staff constantly toured the facility to ensure patrons wore masks. In the Derby Club, every other dining table was made available to ensure a six-foot distance. Derby Lane also opened up more parimutuel wagering stations. Some tellers wore festive Kentucky Derby shirts, and fans came attired with their personal Run for the Roses hats. On the track, Abernathy kennel stood out with four victories as eight of the 14 operations recorded at least one win. Abernathy kennel began Labor Day in a three-way tie for second place in the competitive Derby Lane win standings with Capabal and Nova, each with 98. Three-time kennel champion Everett Racing forged to the top of the group at 99 following a four-win performance on Saturday evening, capping a 12-win week. Reigning kennel champ Lester Raines is in fifth place with 95. Previous Next

  • KING & QUEEN STAKE FINAL AT IOWA GREYHOUND PARK | National Greyhound

< Back KING & QUEEN STAKE FINAL AT IOWA GREYHOUND PARK Jul 6, 2020 Gonz Dandelion made every step count on the way to winning the $30,000 King & Queen Stake at the Iowa Greyhound Park Saturday, July 4. “Gonz does not like the one box,” said T And T Kennel trainer Christopher Grieb. “But he ran his race. He got out of the box, broke well and made the turns well.” The charts gave Gonz a box-to-wire performance. The 75-pounder, born Nov. 15, 2017 out of Bella Infared – Jedi Honey Rider, had firm command in the backstretch as his lead was around four lengths. In the far turn and in the homestretch “I was proud of T’s Bree Harison,” said Grieb. “He made a move to close the gap. It was nice to get a one-two finish.” Challenged but not contested, Gonz Dandelion finished with a two-length win in a day’s best time of 31.08 seconds for the 5-16-mile course. Gonz moves to 7-4-0-0 on the season at IGP. T’s Bree Harison, 8-2-5-1, was a comfortable second, two lengths ahead of the rest of the field. “When Gonz got in front,” said Grieb, “I was not bothered by who was behind, it was his race. “We (the T And T Kennel) have a good team here,” added Grieb. “We have great help. We make it go.” The Kings’ points leader FF Lurch (Copper Kettle), 8-2-2-2, rallied in the homestretch to take third place. Fourth, one length back and five lengths off the pace, was JD Tonic (Stidham & Brindle), 10-4-1-0. Disco Moves (Jackson) earned fifth, a half-length ahead of sixth. Disco Moves is 12-2-3-3. AT’s Golden (T And T) squeezed into sixth. Golden is 8-2-2-1. The disappointment came from Jill St. John (Stidham & Brindle), 10-6-1-1. The Queens’ point leader broke sixth and never made a move in finishing seventh. That left Oakland Taunton (Stidham & Brindle),10-2-2-2, last. For the patrons, Gonz Dandelion paid $8.80. $5.80 and $3.00; T’s Bree Harison paid $10.80 and $3.80; FF Lurch paid $3.20; the (1-5) Quiniela paid $43.00; the (1-5-8) Tri-Box paid $137.90; the (1-5-8-4) 10-cents Superfecta paid $126.77. • LESTER RAINES WINS 2021 WHEELING KENNEL CHAMPIONSHIP | National Greyhound

< Back LESTER RAINES WINS 2021 WHEELING KENNEL CHAMPIONSHIP Stan Pawloski Jan 19, 2022 A dream season. Not only did Lester Raines win their second straight Wheeling Island kennel championship in 2021, but the Joel Roden-trained greyhounds won 605 races during the year and captured all three of the track’s stakes races. Lester Raines trailed the pace-setting Blanchard Kennel for the first half of the 2021 racing season before taking over the top spot in late June and never looked back. The kennel champion amassed 330 victories in a second half surge. Lester Raines’ 605 victories last year easily outdistanced runner up Blanchard (528) and Charter (451). This marked Roden’s fourth championship with Lester Raines Kennel – following up crowns in 2016, 2018 and 2020. The kennel previously won Wheeling titles in 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1996. The competition at Wheeling Island drives Roden every year. “Every kennel championship is special and means a lot to me and our crew. All our hard work paid off. We get into the business for the competition, which I love. That’s what greyhound racing is all about,” Roden said. “Everything came together for us last year, especially in the second half when we ran super. To top 600 victories and to win all three of the track’s stakes races, it was a special year and I am so happy for what we were able to accomplish.” Next in line in the final 2021 standing behind Lester Raines (605), Blanchard (528) and Charter (451) were Jacobs Racing (411), Brad Boeckenstedt (378), Steve Sarras (361), Wayne Ward (351), Imark (349), Patriot/Taplin (330), Xtrem Hess Racing and Rangel (326 each), A Ray (288) and Code Red (184). Code Red Kennel raced for only half of the 2021 season. Pacing the Lester Raines’ attack last year were JS Slush Fund with 19 victories and four greyhounds with 14 wins each – RS Big D, RS’s Dark Night, JS Saltythursday and O Ya Trisha. Three other racers posted 10 victories – Crocket Pace, SNL Nowherefast and JS Wanna Bee. “We didn’t have a lot of superstars, but a big group of consistent greyhounds who had a good shot of winning each time they went to the starting box,” Roden said. “We had a lot of greyhounds come in during the year who really liked the track and did well.” Checking in with nine victories apiece were JS Keep Diggin, O Ya Sniper, Teaser’s Tickle, SNL Whiskey Girl, Craigie Padre and B Ashley Morgan. Recording eight wins each were Rooftop Rachelle, O Ya Bobbie Sue, JS Born To Fly, Aunt Patty Cake and RS’s Prime Time. Capturing stakes crowns for the Lester Raines Kennel in 2021 were Teaser’s Tickle in the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic, the racetrack’s featured stakes event; RS’s Dark Night in the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile; and RS’s Prime Time in the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship. After winning the WV-bred Juvenile, RS’s Dark Night came back the next month and finished fourth in the Mountaineer Classic. “Not only did we have a killer year, but to take all three stakes races made it even more special,” Roden said. Roden credited his Wheeling crew – Julie Roden, Amanda McCardle, Jaylynn McCardle, Kenneth Kelly and Scott Robinette – for playing a key role in the kennel’s success in 2021. “We got a total combined effort from our team – Lester Raines, the greyhounds and all our lease customers,” Roden said. “All played a hand in our success.” In addition to having the most wins in 2021, Lester Raines garnered the most thirds (462) while Blanchard was tops in seconds (490). Lester Raines was the leader in win percentage with 18 percent followed by Blanchard with 15 percent and Charter with 14 percent. Lester Raines led all kennels with a 46 percent trifecta mark. Blanchard was next with 42 percent while Charter followed with 41 percent. Previous Next

< Back $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS 2021 WHEELING STAKES SCHEDULE Stan Pawloski Aug 4, 2021 In last year’s championship final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic at Wheeling Island, West Virginia-bred sprinter CG’s Penny Shoe closed deep in the stretch to give the Abrahamson Kennel and trainer Tom Engle their biggest stakes victory ever. CG’s Penny Shoe went on to earn 2020 first team All-American honors from the National Greyhound Association as well as a spot on the all-Wheeling team. The $100,000 Mountaineer Classic is back this year and highlights the 2021 stakes schedule for Wheeling Island. The racetrack’s featured stakes event is scheduled for October and is sandwiched between a pair of West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association championships – a juvenile and a middle distance stake. The stakes schedule has been approved by the West Virginia Racing Commission. Just like last year, there is no start requirement for greyhounds coming in from other racetracks as well as Wheeling-based racers for the Mountaineer Classic. Greyhounds must only have one schooling race and need not have reached a certain grade to enter the stakes event. The winning greyhound will receive approximately 40 percent of the total stakes purse – a check of $42,000. Runner up is worth $18,000 with the third place finisher receiving $13,000 and fourth place getting $10,000. Fifth and sixth place will receive $5,500 each while seventh and eighth will get $3,000 apiece. There will be three qualifying rounds – Sunday, Oct. 3, Friday, Oct. 8 and Wednesday, Oct. 13 – before the semifinals on Sunday, Oct. 17. The championship final will be on Saturday, Oct. 23. The 2020 Mountaineer Classic had an opening field of 88 sprinters. The $35,000 WVGOBA Juvenile Stakes (5/16th) will be held in September. The first round is set for Friday, Sept. 10, the second round on Wednesday, Sept. 15 and the semi-finals on Sunday, Sept. 19. The juvenile stakes final is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25. The $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship (3/8th) starts on Friday, Nov. 12, with the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 17. The semifinals will be contested on Sunday, Nov. 21. The Keystone stakes championship is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 27. Previous Next
