< Back WHEELING YEAR IN REVIEW: 2021 HANDLES SOAR, TRACK HIGHLIGHTS Stan Pawloski Jan 18, 2022 The 2021 greyhound racing season at Wheeling Island produced record handles following the closure of all the Florida racetracks at the end of 2020. Wheeling Island handled $237 million on greyhound racing in 2021 compared to a handle of $75 million in 2019 (last full season numbers available) – a 212 percent increase. In 2020, the track was closed for three months due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With a 20-race card in 2021, weekend handles surpassing a million dollars a program was commonplace as were $5 million handles a week. The exciting and fun-filled 2021 season had numerous highlights on the track, including the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic, two West Virginia bred stake events, a record-tying performance and win streaks which generated interest. In addition, several youngsters with promising futures opened their careers and the track experienced an influx of racers from other operations – notably the Florida tracks and Iowa late in the year. Top greyhound honors went to Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s AD Black Falcon, who posted 20 victories. Next in line with 19 wins each were Jacobs Racing Kennel’s Abbi’s Gusta Win, Lester Raines Kennel’s JS Slush Fund and Charter Kennel’s Oshkosh Heart. The Lester Raines Kennel, trained by Joel Roden, captured the 2021 kennel championship – making it back-to-back crowns. It was Raines’ third title in the last four years. In the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic in late October, Lester Raines Kennel’s Teaser’s Tickle took charge early and never looked back in winning the track’s featured stakes event by 2 ½ lengths in 29.58. Abbi’s Eagle (Jacobs Racing Kennel) took runner up honors while Penrose Boss (Blanchard Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final order of finish were RS’s Dark Night (Lester Raines Kennel), fourth; Ding Dong Ditch (Imark Kennel), fifth; Abbi’s Frontman (Jacobs Racing Kennel), sixth; CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel), seventh; and Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), eighth. Teaser’s Tickle made track history in winning the Mountaineer Classic. Since the track opened in 1976, no other greyhound had ever captured a major stakes championship in just 14 career races. The old mark was held by Large Lee, who won the 2008 Firecracker Sprint in his 15th career trip. It was a remarkable run to the stakes crown for Teaser’s Tickle as the September 2019 greyhound out of Bella Infrared-Beautiful Tease entered the qualifying rounds without a single Grade AA race under his belt. After a seventh in the first round, Teaser’s Tickle romped to three straight wins by a combined 23 lengths to earn a spot in the final. In the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile in September, Lester Raines Kennel’s RS’s Dark Night rocketed by the leaders on the backstretch before pulling away to a 5 ½-length victory in 29.81. JA’s Croft (Code Red Kennel) took runner up honors while Mac’s New York (A Ray Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final finish were RS’s Blue Heaven (Lester Raines Kennel), fourth; Mac’s Zhivago (A Ray Kennel), fifth; RS’s Prime Time (Lester Raines Kennel), sixth; Coach Wonder (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), seventh; and Mac’s Evita (A Ray Kennel), eighth. In the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship in November, Lester Raines Kennel’s RS’s Prime Time dominated the field in the final – finishing 5 lengths ahead of runner up CET Dirty Gurly (Steve Sarras Kennel) while JA’s Moon Man (Code Red Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the Keystone final finish were Mac’s Choo (A Ray), fourth; Mac’s Zhivago (A Ray), fifth; GLS Fast Food (Jacobs Racing), sixth; Macs Chapman (A Ray), seventh; and RS’s Blue Heaven (Lester Raines), eighth. The longest winning streak during the 2021 racing season was five in a row by six greyhounds – Abbi’s Gusta Win (Jacobs Racing Kennel), Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), O Ya Trisha (Lester Raines Kennel), Oshkosh Heart (Charter Kennel), Imark Daria (Imark Kennel) and RS Big D (Lester Raines Kennel). Two greyhounds posted four straight wins twice in 2021 – O Ya Trisha (Lester Raines Kennel) and CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel). Other racers with four victories in a row were AD Black Falcon (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel), BO’s Owen (Blanchard Kennel), Easi Lil Charlie (Blanchard Kennel), FGF Ron Weasley (Charter Kennel), JS Wanna Bee (Lester Raines Kennel), JS Slush Fund (Lester Raines Kennel), JS In The Money (Rangel Kennel), KB’s Copy Kat (Charter Kennel), LK’s Sheridan (Steve Sarras Kennel), Pat C Paul (Rangel Kennel), Super Ollie (Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel) and Teaser’s Tickle (Lester Raines Kennel). The track’s 330-yard record time of 16.74, held since December 2015 by Lester Raines Kennel’s Atascocita Santo, was tied by Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s UBX Crackereater in November. CG’s Sun Storm is the only greyhound to post victories in all three qualifying rounds to accumulate a total of 45 points. Next in line is Imark Kennel’s CET Dirty Skinny with 40 points on the strength of two wins and a second. Leap Day All Distance Evening – Saturday February 29, 2020 Race 2 – (330 Yards) – Super sprint coming your way and there is no better early speeder than JS Range Rover. This greyhound can get to the front on any field and this one is NOT chalked full of grade A’s. Expect him to be pressed, but on the lead, he wins. Prompting the pace will be the other inside ankle burners. Mi Bronc Buster is a promising pup that is not just fast, but he has his beloved rail too. Jay Abu is more rusher than breaker, so see the instant lead won’t happen, but he still should be in the mix. And don’t forget about Misterbythatmuch. Another strong early threat that is well posted and could upset. (3-1-4-2) Race 4 – (990 Yards) – From the shortest course to the longest, the super-marathon runners make their way into the card once again. You never pick against the Lashmet Kennel in this race as they have won the last 2 times, we have run it. They always seem to dominate and LK’s Dimingus gets the nod tonight. RS Libbys Pick has the class edge on everyone else and the rail which makes her dangerous. Like the rest though, just don’t know if she can go this far. WW Aces Of Aces is a good steady runner with good class lines that might be able to contend over the route, and Watch Me Grin might not look that good on paper, but the gears he has late might just come in handy over the added, added distance event. If you are looking for a longshot, pick the Cheshire cat from the middle post. (6-1-7-5) Race 5 – (550 Yards) – Semi-Finals 2020 bestbet Sprint Classic – Talk about your tough races. This one is loaded to the brim with tip top talent and it is going to be highly contested from the get-go. Obviously Pat C News will bomb to the lead and control this race to the stretch but getting home a winner could be a tricky proposition in this race. WHY? The fast as I want to be runner, WW Blazing Crest is right next door and can outbreak, or, run down, News if his head is on right. Recently he has been MONEY, and tonight I the trend continues from a better post. Double winners Penrose Boss and LK’s Effingham are no slouch themselves as both get good post position and can threaten a pace from close or far. (4-5-2-7) Race 7 – (660 Yards) – I see this race looking like the last one over this distance, the finals of the 2020 Orange Park Derby. WP’s Twistedlady is back from a couple of efforts over 550 for the stakes and now gets back at home over 660 yards. She loves the outside, she won the stakes from the 8 box, and I expect her break to return. She will be pressed early by Arby from the rail. This solid grade A early speeder will be on or near the lead in the early stages of this race, but late he just won’t be able to hang with the champ. Fellow finalist Fakeit To Makeit always gives her all in each and every start. A solid chaser, she should factor in the money throughout in this effort, and don’t forget WW Frankie D. You might not know his name, but you need to pay attention. He is a solid grade A that can close well over the round and finally gets out of the 5 box. If he gets loose, he could be upset minded tonight. (5-1-6-7) Race 9 – (770 Yards) – Another wide-open race and only a couple of greyhound have run this far in this field. Class over the rest, so you have to like the grade A’s on the outside of the racetrack. LK’s I Got This looks the part. A solid grade A winner that is not short over the 660 yards course and can dominate up front when she gets loose early. The 8 box with no speed around early, helps her get it done. Pat C Woozy is hot off a win and can flat out fly late when he is not impeded early on. Don’t expect to see her early, but late you know that she will make her presence known. Dutch Bally might lack class, but has the raw late speed needed to be effective over this distance, and KW Cassadee Pope is a solid chasing plugger that has run 770 before and knows how to stay in the money. Look for another superfecta finish tonight. (8-7-3-6) Race 11 – (550 Yards) – Semi-Finals 2020 bestbet Sprint Classic – The other semi-final round race and this one is just as tough as the other. Easi Conroy has to be the one to beat here. He has won 3 straight races, and 5 of his last 6 starts, and took down super pup Pat C Lookie Last time out. He has the 1 box and I don’t see anything working against him. He will have to be on the top of his game, but an undefeated run through the rounds is within his reach. Speaking of Lookie, she is back in with Conroy again and gets a chance at revenge. This double winner in the stakes was a mere couple of lengths off of the track record in round number 1. Her blazing speed could be a difference maker, especially if she can outbreak Conroy from a great middle post. Others to consider include Lookie’s kennelmate Pat C Adieu and Super C Addison. Adieu looks to rebound after a rough trip last time out and Addison is never out of any race that she runs in. Both have the skills to score, might just need a little help to get it done in this effort against this talented field of greyhounds. (4-1-6-5) Previous Next

< Back NOVA KENNEL SETS DERBY LANE RECORD Mar 17, 2020 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – It began with the night’s closest finish – Deco All Redd’s first career win by a nose. By the end of the night, Nova kennel wound up being second to none. For the first time in modern-day history, a Derby Lane operation won eight races on a single program. Nova’s accomplishment on this past Saturday’s evening performance covered all five graded levels, highlighted by wins with its first six starters. Few could see the record-setting effort by Nova coming. Entering the night’s 15-race program, Nova ranked 12th among 14 kennels with 48 wins. Kennel owner Hans Limmer had 11 greyhounds entered - 10 in 550-yard sprints – and most of them shined when the lights came on under the guidance of trainer Missy Kubitz. Deco All Redd’s come-from-behind win in Race 2, a Grade M sprint, was the first of six victories in consecutive races for Nova. Deco All Redd, competing in his fifth lifetime race, paid $6.40 to win – one of five Nova favorites to prevail on the program. Another favorite, Hi Noon Ruger, followed with a 5-1/2-length win at Grade C and paid $5.20. Turbo Finley then pulled off a two-length triumph at Grade B and returned $11.40. Dancin Lee continued the trend with a two-length victory at Grade D in Race 5, paying $9.20. Finish Him then picked up his first career Grade A win by 2-1/2 lengths and returned $12.80. Send Overnight extended Nova’s win streak in Race 7 with a half-length triumph at Grade D, paying $6.40 as the favorite. Nova suffered its first loss in Race 8, but Deco Gatling Gun put the kennel back in the winner’s circle in the following race with an eight-length Grade A romp, returning $5.60 as the favorite. Nova then had three more opportunities to set the modern-day mark, and it took the final one to pull off the feat. After losing Races 10 and 12, Turbo Ferris rallied for a 3-1/2-length Grade C win in Race 14 – paying $4.20 as the favorite – to give Nova a page in Derby Lane’s record book. Edward Gardner, Robert Hardison and David Hays each owned two of the winners, while Charles Haliburton III and Peter Limmer each were owners of a winner. Only two kennels in modern-day history had won seven races in one performance. Three-time defending kennel champion Everett Racing was the most recent operation to win seven, that coming on June 22, 2019. Filipelli & O’Donnell kennel was the previous one with seven victories on June 16, 2009. LANDMARK VICTORY . All-America first-team sprinter LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel reached his 75th career win Monday with a four-length Grade A victory at Derby Lane. < Back NEW ATTRACTION IN ABILENE Jan 11, 2023 At 19 feet 10 ½ inches wide and 13 feet 11 ¼ inches tall (not including the frame), Abilene, Kansas, is now home to the World’s Largest Belt Buckle. Designed by local artist Jason Lahr, Fluter’s Creek Metal Works, the buckle features Dwight D. Eisenhower, Wild Bill Hickok, Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad, Historic Seelye Mansion, C.W. Parker carousel horse, C.L. Brown telephone, a racing Greyhound and Chisholm Trail longhorn inlaid with blue quartz. The buckle is a project of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau which hopes the new roadside attraction will entice travelers to stop and visit the Best Historic Small Town. “Whether you enjoy Cowboy history, art, fun photo opportunities or the world’s largest things, make sure to add the World’s Largest Belt Buckle to your Kansas I-70 road trip,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau director. The project is funded by a Kansas Tourism Attraction Development Grant and from donations from 100 businesses and individuals. The buckle garnered nationwide attention when Jefferson White, a.k.a. “Jimmy” from the hit tv show Yellowstone shared about the project. < Back KAIAS ALEX IS MR. CONSISTENT Oct 5, 2020 Consistency: Unchanging in nature, standard, or effect over time. The Google definition doesn’t mention Kaias Alex. Perhaps it should. Turn the calendar back to Dec. 14, 2019. On that Saturday night performance, Kaias Alex broke slowly in Race 9, got bumped on the first turn, and finished fifth – 9-1/2-lengths behind BD Wells in a Grade A 550-yard sprint. Something changed after that for the Floyd kennel athlete. “He’s matured,’’ kennel operator and trainer Randy Floyd said. “He’s just gotten better. I thought he was pretty good, but not this good.’’ Twenty-three races and more than nine months later, Kaias Alex has added consistency to his resume. Not one effort worse than third place, a remarkable streak among the best Grade A sprinters that Derby Lane has to offer. Owned by George ‘’Dick’’ Adler of Lecanto, Fla., Kaias Alex has 13 wins, nine seconds, and one third since Dec. 20. Not even a coronavirus pandemic that sidelined all Derby Lane dogs for seven weeks has stopped his momentum. “He’s just a happy and friendly dog,’’ Floyd said. “The whole litter is that way. I told Dick this whole litter is just a pleasure to handle. They just want some attention.’’ Kaias Alex has never been better. In September, he recorded a career-high six-race win streak, beating rivals by a total of 28 lengths. The streak ended this past Tuesday with a second-place effort, but he returned to the winner’s circle on Saturday with a box-to-wire 7-length triumph. The 39-month-old son of Djays Octane and Ethereal Elation has won 24 of 60 races overall since starting his career in February 2019, raising his in-the-money percentage to 80 percent that represents a top-four finish in a race. His versatility is reflected with 14 wins by leading at every race call, and 10 by coming from off the pace. “He breaks decent and he’s got a good rush to the turn,’’ Floyd said. “And then he wants to get out wide and on the outside, and get going. It’s been a while since anybody’s run him down.’’ The last time Kaias Alex gave up a lead was Dec. 27, when Super C Casino rallied from a 3-length deficit to defeat the 73-pound dog by a nose. Kaias Alex’s best time at 550 yards is 30.30 seconds on Jan. 15. Although Kaias Alex didn’t advance to Derby Lane’s top Grade A level until his 20th start, Floyd entered him in three stakes races in 2019: (third in the $20,000 Gold Trophy Juvenile; fifth in the $10,000 Thanksgiving; and unplaced in the $10,000 Howl-O-Ween). “I’m pleasantly surprised (at his success),’’ Floyd said. “I knew he could run. . . . It’s a matter if you get a chance to run. “There are so many good dogs (at Derby Lane), you’ve got to be lucky to get out of the box and get around the turn. < Back LESTER RAINES' IS SECOND TO NONE Oct 26, 2020 Lester Raines generated its own brand of Super Tuesday at Derby Lane. In one of the most astonishing accomplishments in the modern era at the Florida West Coast greyhound track, the reigning meet kennel champion nearly pulled off the improbable on this past Tuesday’s matinee performance – winning all but one race it entered. Lester Raines captured nine races with its 10 starters. Yes, nine of 10 . . . and its other dog ran third. “I guess it probably would have been the day to buy a lottery ticket,’’ said Gary Reicherts, a septuagenarian who bred four of the winning greyhounds on Lester Raines’ iconic day. Under the guidance of kennel manager and trainer Anthony Diaz, Lester Raines won three consecutive races in three different stages of the 15-race card with victories in Races 1-3, 5-7, and 13-15. The performance erased the track’s previous modern-day record of wins by a kennel for one performance on March 14, when the Hans Limmer-owned Nova kennel registered eight victories. Prior to Nova’s big effort, two kennels had recorded seven wins on one card in the past 11 years: Everett Racing on June 22, 2019, and Filipelli & O’Donnell kennel on June 16, 2009. “(This past Tuesday) wasn’t one of my better days in life, and I come home and I (look at the results) and go win, win, win, win. . . . Jeepers! It definitely brightened up my day.’’ Reicherts, who breeds and raises greyhounds on his farm in Osage, Iowa, with wife Beverly and daughter Angie, starred on the performance with the four winners: littermates O Ya Bartender (Maiden, $10.40 to win) and O Ya Bree (Grade D, $4.20), along with O Ya Praire Wind (D, $6.80), and O Ya Shady Lady (D, $5.20). The first three greyhounds were sired by Oya Stan The Man, one of Reicherts’ all-time best athletes that gave Mick D’Arcy his only St. Petersburg top-dog win title as a Derby Lane kennel owner in the January-to-June 2016 meet. In that season, Oya Stan The Man parlayed a $30,000 St. Petersburg Derby championship into All-America first-team honors. Lester Raines’ other victories were produced by Dutch Blair (C, $7.60), owned by Jo Ann Koerner; JS Bizzyasabee (A, $6.40), owned by Sharon Henry; PJ Show Time (D, $8.40), owned by Gloria Dorsey and William McCarthy; Super C Aneeta (C, $9.40), owned by Cole Kennel; and Jax Score (C, $8), owned by Michael Jackson and Henry. The only Lester Raines dog to lose was Grade A sprinter O Ya Flo, another daughter of Oya Stan The Man and bred by Reicherts. O Ya Flo finished third, four lengths behind Everett Racing’s Turbo Baylor in one of Derby Lane’s largest upsets of the year. Turbo Baylor, the longest shot on the tote board at 63-1, paid $129.80 to win for a $2 ticket. The nine victories were part of a massive 24-win week for Lester Raines, which won at least three races on five of the seven performances. It moved into third place in the Derby Lane kennel standings with 162 victories. Post positions were drawn on Monday. The greyhounds are among 16 athletes competing for eight spots in the 550-yard championship race on Sunday. All dogs advanced by finishing in the top four in their respective races in this past Saturday’s first round. RTSS Eve’s Angel, a 31-month-old female from a litter by Kiowa Myth and PJ Hardnottolike, starts from the inside post in Race 6 at 1:44 p.m. Trained by kennel owner Randy Floyd for owner Running To Stand Still LLC, RTSS Eve’s Angel is the second-choice 4-1 morning-line favorite. She finished second in her first qualifier. Other starters in Race 6 in post-position order: Hi Noon Recoil (Nova kennel), O Ya Flo (Lester Raines), Flying Stark (Everett Racing), LK’s Trubulee (Lashmet), Oh No Mr Bill (Abernathy), Kentucky Smith (Cal Holland) and Ventilator (Everett Racing).
