  • Artex Pumbaa joins elite group with 11-race win streak | National Greyhound

< Back Artex Pumbaa joins elite group with 11-race win streak Stan Pawloski Feb 20, 2024 The chase is over. Artex Pumbaa’s run at Casual Casey’s Wheeling track record of 16 wins in a row ended recently when the Blanchard Kennel sprint star missed his break and finished out of the money after posting 11 straight Grade AA victories. Only nine greyhounds in the history of Wheeling Island racing history have longer consecutive winning streaks than Artex Pumbaa. His 11 victories in a row started on Dec. 1, 2023, and ended on Feb. 9, 2024. A May 2020 greyhound out of Flying Hydrogen-Arkans Cancer, Artex Pumbaa had closing efforts in seven of his 11 victories while in the other four wins the sprinter was on top around the first turn. Artex Pumbaa’s 11 straight victories were by a combined 34 lengths – a 3-length average margin of victory. He had wins by 6 ½, 6, 5 ½, 4 and 3 ½ (twice) lengths during his streak. Lengthy winning streaks are rare – there’s only been 22 Wheeling win streaks of at least 10 in a row. Local greyhound fan and historian Robin Reed, who has tracked Wheeling racing since its inception in 1976, feels a streak of 10 or more is a sign of a truly elite greyhound. “Of all the greyhound stats, total wins, stakes wins, and so forth, I think achieving a win streak of 10 or more races is probably the most difficult due to the fact that so many obstacles need to be overcome. A lot of greyhounds are very dependent on a good post position, but a big win streak will surely contain some less than ideal holes,” Reed said. “Weather can also be an obstacle if sloppy or muddy track conditions prevail. For any greyhound to be at his or her best for a few months without missing a beat is astounding.” James Blanchard called his star, Artex Pumbaa, multidimensional with a ton of desire. “(Artex) Pumbaa can break on top, or he can come from behind. He’s so consistent and tries hard every race … a lot of heart,” Blanchard said. “I’m so proud of what he’s accomplished.” In 2023, Artex Pumbaa posted a special season by sharing the track win championship with JSP Rayzendacash and earned the captaincy of the all-Wheeling team. In 51 starts, he had 22 wins, 8 seconds, 6 thirds and 6 fourths. Artex Pumbaa is trained by Chris Maynard and owned by Rachelle Henry and Joe Frey. Following is a listing of the 22 Wheeling win streaks of at least 10 in a row, date achieved and how the streak ended. • PBKC PRESENTS ROUND 1 ACTION OF THE $50,000 HE'S MY MAN CLASSIC | National Greyhound

< Back PBKC PRESENTS ROUND 1 ACTION OF THE $50,000 HE'S MY MAN CLASSIC Jan 6, 2020 West Palm Beach, Fl. – Round one qualifying action for what should be a historic $50,000 He’s My Man Classic gets underway Wednesday afternoon, January 8, at Palm Beach Kennel Club. The same 56 Greyhounds will return to compete in round two, Saturday afternoon, January 11. Following the second round, two dozen entries will be return to their respective Grade class, with only the top 32 remaining for the third round being contested Wednesday afternoon, January 15. The top 16-point earners from the third round will move on to the semifinals on Sunday afternoon, January 19. The final eight will comprise the field for the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic which will be run Saturday afternoon, January 25. Qualifying will be contested in races 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 15. Some fan favorites for the first round of qualifying include: Race 4 appears to belong to the inside-posted racers, the strong finishers #1Pat C Inferno (Flying Fired – Pat C Pop In, Koppe, Staats & Collins) and #2 Arkansbdchikhik s (Golden Squire – Arkans BD Cheeks, Royal Racing Team) along with the early speedster #3 Barts Mandy More (KC And All – Barts Midniterun, James Douglas) and the strong first-turn rusher #4 Heremecoming (KC And All – Tango Tessa, Janie Carroll). Race 6 : The probable post-time favorite looks to be the well-posted #1 Barts These Eyes (Barcelona Boss – B’s That’s My Jam, James Douglas). This track veteran will be going for her third-consecutive victory. Race 8 : Several qualifiers in this event have a shot at pulling off the victory, including the well-posted #1 Superior Roza (Gable Sour Cream – Superior Rawlins, B & B Racing) and the two early speedsters #5 I Can Do Badboy (Offthebrakedrake – Pippi, D. Q. William) and the youngster #8 Barts Timetoplay (KC And All – Barts Cherrypie, James Douglas). Race 10 : The way this qualifier will play out depends on who will be on the lead entering the backstretch. It could be #1 Mister Red Rader (Flying Titanium – Rip N Runnin, B & B Racing), #5 Oshkosh Noisy (Oshkosh Lamont – Oshkosh Vani, James Douglas) or #7 Grean Street (Flying Coal City – Kebo Cutler, Rader Racing). Also keep an eye out for the strong closer, #2 Its Hammer Time (Right Connection – Blondbombshell, Janie Carroll). Race 12 : This is a tough one. One could make a case for almost every Greyhound in this race! Good luck! Race 14 : The most likely post time favorite should be #8 Shine N Shut Up (Need My Moneynow – Diamond Tears, D. Q. Williams). He drew the best post and should be able to clear the first turn on top. Race 15 : Three entries will be sharing the majority of the win pool due to great racing positions, including a finalist in the recently run $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity, #1 RF Oka (Chasmo’s Dutch – Superior Megryan, B & B Racing), the consistent athlete #2 JS Mane Event (KC And All – TY Kay Event, Rader Racing) and the extremely well-placed #8 Getting The Money (Offthebrakedrake – Goodluck Topaz, D. Q. Williams), who will be going for his third straight win. The $50,000 He’s My Man Classic is the first event in Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $150,000 “Big 3" Stakes series, which includes the $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby (Saturday afternoon, February 29) and the $50,000 Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational (Saturday afternoon, March 14). The Classic is named for Palm Beach Kennel Club racing legend and the track’s first multimedia sensation He’s My Man and dedicated to the man who raised and trained “Roscoe”, Bill Pappas. • ROUND 3 OF 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY | National Greyhound

< Back ROUND 3 OF 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY Jan 21, 2020 Only three races left as the competition heats up in the 2020 edition of the Orange Park Derby. The best routers are still around, and the converted sprinters are making their cases as well. Loads of talent still in the mix as the 24 greyhounds head to post on money evening for the quarter finals. Let’s take a close look at the races and see if we can get the week started off on the right foot. Monday evening January 20th, 2020 – Round 3 of the Orange Park Derby Race 9 – Super C Addison is starting to figure out the distance and that is bad news for the rest of this field. Hot off an impressive win, she will thrive tonight as she is finally on the rail. UC Ricky Snickle won last time out too and has the early needed to see the lead again tonight. Holding on late will be his true hurdle to overcome. Pat C Jacob also got things righted last time out and might just have the best raw speed in the bunch. If he gets loose, watch out. WW Spending Time will contend early for sure with all the breaking ability but won’t be able to hand late with the closers. (2-7-4-3) Race 11 – Undefeated so far is RTSS Gonwitdawin. Posted up impressive back to back box to wire victors from outside post positions, more to come in this effort. No speed around here at the break and another wide box should equal a hat trick. Trying to take her down is the talented Fakeit To Makeit. With 5 quinielas in a row, including a pair of wins, she is no slouch, and if she hits the box, she might just upset the apple cart here. Don’t forget about the closers though. LK’s I Got this is a solid grade A that gets a good post and can challenge throughout, and BGR Woe Is Me is rising in the ranks, running hot in the rounds, and will come flying late to challenge. Race 14 – RPG Get You Back is the other undefeated greyhound in the stakes and looks to be the one to beat for the title. With 3 straight, and 5 wins in 6 races, she is the real deal. Out and gone early on is her motto, and tonight I just more of that happening. Trying to make her work for it will be Pat C Woozy. A huge winner in round 1, she found trouble in round 2 and finished out of the money. With a same post tonight, you don’t know just what you are going to get. If she clears early, it could be quite a race. WP’s Twisted Lady was hot heading into the rounds but has cooled off in the 2 efforts. Still in the money, but not breaking like she has in the past. If she can find that early foot, she too could throw her hat into the ring for the victory. Alcohol U Later is a closer over the distance and winning against the top tier might be too much to ask. Finding a spot in the money, well that is another. Look for her round out the superfecta tonight. (4-2-6-3) The semi-finals will run on Saturday evening January 25th at bestbet Jacksonville. Don’t miss out! Previous Next

  • DECO COLT GUN SELDOM MISFIRES | National Greyhound

< Back DECO COLT GUN SELDOM MISFIRES Aug 24, 2020 Soon after the starting box opens, Deco Colt Gun usually has his work cut out. “He doesn’t get the break from the box, and he doesn’t have the rush to the turn like he used to,’’ Nova kennel manager and trainer Missy Kubitz said. “But once he gets around the turn and gets out, he drives hard.’’ Deco Colt Gun doesn’t shoot blanks very often. He is competitive, confident and consistent. For the past two years, the 550-yard specialist has been among the best Derby Lane has to offer. Deco Colt Gun is a lifetime winner of half his races (43 victories from 86 starts), and possesses an in-the-money record of 86 percent with finishes of fourth place or better. “He hasn’t dropped out of Grade A, and he’s very competitive,’’ Kubitz said. The 73-pound sprinter won his first four races this month before finishing third this past Saturday. Deco Colt Gun showed ability in his first career race at Gulf Greyhound Park in La Marque, Texas, where he has been twice before returning each time to Derby Lane. He broke first on that January 2019 day and led all the way in the 550-yard race for a 2-1/2-length victory at 9-1 odds. That was only one of 16 times that Deco Colt Gun has left the starting box first among his rivals. Excelling at Derby Lane is what the David Hays-owned greyhound does best. Forty-one of his lifetime victories have been at the Florida West Coast track, including 38 at either Grade A or against stakes competition. Deco Colt Gun, a 3-year-old son of Deco Glen Lee and Tiger Girl, also has reached the finals in three of four stakes appearances - all in 2019. He was third in the $8,000 T.L. Weaver Memorial Challenge, sixth in the $50,000 Husker Magic Fall Sprint, and seventh in the $10,000 Howl-O-Ween. In each stakes sprint, Deco Colt Gun was defeated by an All-America first-team selection: LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel (twice) and Flying Givenchy of Everett Racing kennel. His career-best clocking on Derby Lane’s 550-yard course is 30.23 seconds in May 2019. Deco Colt Gun’s resume includes a pair of five-race win streaks and three four-race win streaks. “He’s a good boy and he loves to race,’’ Kubitz said. “He’s changed in the kennel, too. “He used to be real quiet and never said a peep . . . . You didn’t even know he was there. Now, since we’ve been shut down (by the coronavirus pandemic from March 20 to May 7) and started racing again, he’s ripping up his rug and chewing on the water can. “He’s a mess now. I think it’s because he got cabin fever. He’s so glad to be back racing.’’ The success of Deco Colt Gun and other Nova athletes has kennel owner Hans Limmer of St. Petersburg and son Peter Limmer of Rosebud, Texas, in contention for a kennel meet championship. Entering this week, Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 80 victories - trailing reigning titlist Lester Raines (84) and Capabal (83). Nova’s last title came in the July-to-December meet in 2016. Nova is the meet leader in Grade A wins by a 35-18 margin over Lashmet kennel. “I win a lot of races on the love that I have for (the dogs),’’ Kubitz said. “I show up and (the dogs) give it back to me. I’ve always thought that I win a lot of races with the love. “Hans and Peter are real happy with how the dogs are performing. Peter laughs and jokes about me being the Queen of the (Grade) A wins, and the King of the (Grade) B wins, because when we first opened back up (from the pandemic), I was winning all the B’s and then of course, the dogs go to A and they’re winning.’’ Previous Next
