- DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE | National Greyhound
< Back DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE Jul 27, 2020 Since 2004, the Abernathy brand has failed to appear on the proverbial kennel championship trophy at Derby Lane. Kennel owners Jim and Kayruth Abernathy came close three times during those 27 meets – finishing second three times (2019, 2015, 2014). As Derby Lane’s July-to-December meet winds down its first month this week, the Abernathys have put themselves in position to make history. Entering Monday’s 15-race performance, Abernathy kennel parlayed a big week to move into second place in the win standings. After recording a meet-tying 16 victories in the previous week, Abernathy trails only reigning champion Lester Raines, 50-42, in the win race. Abernathy and Lester Raines are the only kennels to collect 16 wins so far in a calendar week during the meet. Lester Raines won 16 races on July 6-11. Abernathy and Capabal were the lone kennels to notch at least one victory on all seven performances. Abernathy ended the week the way it started: getting four wins on the first and final cards. Six of Abernathy’s winners paid double-digits to win, including the $31.40 returned by Grade A athlete Charlotte York on Wednesday. That victory represented the first career Grade A win by Charlotte York from 61 starts. The 2-1/2-year old daughter of Pat C Clement and Krazy Kara was the longest shot on the board at 14-1 odds in the 550-yard race. She won in box-to-wire fashion by 2-1/2 lengths in 31.08 seconds for owner Steve Sarras. Abernathy’s 16 winners produced an average payout of $10.20 for a $2 win ticket. Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 39 victories, followed by Capabal at 38, and Everett Racing at 37. Derby Lane features seven weekly performances with matinee racing Monday through Saturday, and a Saturday evening card. Previous Next
- SEMI-FINALS 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY | National Greyhound
< Back SEMI-FINALS 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY Jan 24, 2020 And it all comes down to this! Just two races of greyhounds remain in the 2020 Orange Park Derby and by the end of the card on Saturday evening, we will know just who made it into the finals. Sixteen greyhounds have the chance, but just who seizes the day, and the points, are yet to be seen. Let’s take a closer look at those races and see if we can get you cashing some tickets this weekend at bestbet Jacksonville. Saturday Evening January 25th, 2020 – Semi Finals of 2020 Orange Park Derby Race 7 – Really tough race here as we have 5 round winners and every greyhound in the field has at least finished in the quiniela in one or more of their starts. This one comes down to the break as far as I’m concerned. RTSS Gonwitdawin might have had a rough trip last time out, but back breaking, and with no speed around, she should be unabated to the lead and holding on late for the win. Pressuring here the entire way should be the other early footers. Fakeit To Makeit has not missed the quiniela in 5 straight and the trend continues here. A Long way to the rail from the outside, but with a good break it should be easy to get there. She will factor from the gun and push the leader to the wire. WP’s Twistedlady gets a great inside post and has even early to be in the conversation. She too should chase the pace from the start and be a factor for the duration of this one. And don’t sleep on Super C Addison. This greyhound is figuring out the distance well and can come from off the pace to get home a winner. If she breaks close, she could upset them all at the finish line. (4-7-6-2) Race 11 – This race is the weaker of the two and the stand-out pick is RPG Get You Back. Clearly the best greyhound in this field and the only undefeated one left in the stakes. With 4 rounds in a row, she is the one to beat, especially from a great 8 box in this race. Out and gone early on! She will dominate on the front end once again. Pressing the early pace should be UC Ricky Snickle. Ricky has not finished out of the money in 6 straight and that will continue in this effort. He has enough early push to challenge and should be around the pace for the early stages of this one. A clear next best, the real race should be for third. That could be very interesting as recent winner, and former 660 standout, GS Octavia is rounding back into form. She might break slow but has a good early rush and can come on a bit at the end of her efforts. She has a great post position to start from in this race and could be unset minded once again if she can get into the conversation early on. Pat C Woozy can really fly in the open and might just have the best closing speed in this bunch. Hard to ignore a win by 10 plus lengths, so we won’t. She likes it out here and will be coming on strong in the second half of this effort. If she wants a chance to win, she must not give the leaders too much of a cushion in the early stages of this race. (8-5-2-7) After tonight the field will be set. The post positions for the Orange Park Derby will take place on Wednesday Matinee January 29th. The finals will take place on Saturday evening February 1st at bestbet Jacksonville in conjunction with our Dash for Cash promotion and our fan favorite 2nd chance drawings. Previous Next
- LK'S SANTORINI CAPTURES WIN TITLE | National Greyhound
< Back LK'S SANTORINI CAPTURES WIN TITLE Jim Gartland Jan 14, 2021 Although racing seasons were shortened as a result of the Covid pandemic, the race for the national win title continued and in the end it was another sprinter from the Lashmet farm, LK's Santorini, who took home the honors. That's back to back titles for John & Jill Lashmet of Colorado. Last year's winner was LK's Crush N It. The battle was closely contested right to the very end. Eight greyhounds were separated by only four wins in the final tally including last year's winner LK's Crush N It. Santorini had fewer starts than many of the other top finishers, but was able to capture 33 victories during the 2020 racing year. All of her victories came at Derby Lane. The runner-up this year was quite impressive too, as Killer Tolstoy earned 31 wins while racing at three different tracks, Naples, Dubuque and Southland. Once again, a handful of Caliente racers were in the mix as they often have many more opportunities for starts than most American racing offers. Santorini’s record for the year was 56-33-11-7-1, all at Derby Lane. She captured a couple of stakes including the Inaugural and the season ending Grand Finale. She snapped off numerous win streaks throughout the year including an impressive run where she went undefeated in eight straight starts from September 26 through October 30. Unfortunately, she suffered a minor injury shortly after that streak and was sidelined for almost all of November, returning for a start on December 9, just in time to finish off the season. Santorini is a home grown product out of Lashmet's own LK's Vespar-LK's Chardonnay, was raised in Eaton Colorado by the Lashmets and raced for the Lashmet Kennel trained by Ken Deacon. Runner-up in the win race, Killer Tolstoy, ran up a 65-31-10-6-3 record for owners Alan Hill & Kirk Harlan. Tolstoy managed to win 16 races at Naples and 15 races at Dubuque before moving on to Southland late in the year to finish second with 31 wins. Tolstoy is a son of Superior Panama-Killer Torina and had yet to get a victory at Southland by year's end. Interestingly enough, another greyhound owned by Kirk Harlan finished third in this year's race by capturing 30 wins racing at Caliente. The female by Flying Wolf Pack-Slatex Diamond accumulated a 60-30-11-7-7 record despite missing the last two months of the year due to an injury. Five greyhounds finished tied for fourth in this year's race, all with 29 wins. That list includes two more Lashmet racers in LK's Effingham and LK's Crush N It, Twilite Kennel's RPG Get You Back, and two other Caliente sprinters, Shopify and Yolo Sky. LK's Effingham and RPG Get You Back both raced at Bestbet Jacksonville, while LK's Crush N It finished his career at Derby Lane. Shopify is owned by Plum Creek and Yolo Sky is one of Jeff Blair's pups. Previous Next

- FURRY FOUR FIELD SET | National Greyhound
< Back FURRY FOUR FIELD SET Shane Bolender Mar 30, 2021 Although upsets were plentiful in the first couple of rounds of the 2021 “Hound Madness” Stakes, once 60 greyhounds got eliminated and we ended up with four remaining for the semi-finals, the “chalk” survived all the chaos, setting up for what should be one heck of a set of match races this coming Friday. The West Region was won by #3 seed Pat C Ram Rod (Gloria Dorsey Kennel), who took out #1 seed Air Ace during the 3rd race on Saturday rather easily, extending an early length lead to 3 ½ lengths by the time the finish line came. That win extended his overall race winning streak to four straight going into the Furry Four round. The Midwest Region was won by #1 seed Craigie Delegate. The Monte Hoopes trained star seems to be the crème of the overall crop as as the red and white fawn male beat #6 seed TMC’s Sweetcraig by 3 ½ lengths to advance. His stat sheet is pretty impressive, as not only has the 69 pound male won his last five starts, but has won 10 of 12 races this year and 14 of 17 career races overall. The East Region was captured by #2 seed JS Keephopealive (Lester Raines Kennel). This is the second entry in the Furry Four field for trainer Monte Hoopes. This is also the only female out of the four remaining greyhounds, making her a rooting favorite to face off against the big boys. Some would argue her path to this stage in the stakes event was the easiest, facing some of the weaker seeds to get here. She easily dispatched #5 seed Eliza Fraser in the “Greyt Eight” round, winning by 6 ½ at the finish line and still pulling away. The fourth and final region (South) was won by #3 seed Aladdin (A Ray Kennel). The red male held off gamely #13 seed XM Stride N by a single lengths in probably the best match race of the four recently contested. Oddly enough, it was also the only race he won outright, as he finished second overall the previous four races. The “tail” of the tape on both races is detailed below. Race #13 on Friday’s performance will feature the JS Keephopealive vs. Aladdin match race while race #16 will feature Craigie Delegate vs. Pat C Ram Rod. The winners of both races will face off for the championship on Friday, April 9th. RACE 13 (Grade SAA) – Friday, April 2, 2021 JS KEEPHOPEALIVE VS. ALADDIN RACE 16 (Grade SAA) – Friday, April 2, 2021 CRAIGIE DELEGATE VS. PAT C RAM ROD Previous Next
