- CET DIRTY DILLY AND ARKANS MABEL SELECTED FOR TOP NGA AWARDS FOR 2021 | National Greyhound
< Back CET DIRTY DILLY AND ARKANS MABEL SELECTED FOR TOP NGA AWARDS FOR 2021 Jim Gartland Mar 23, 2022 A West Virginia speedster and a Southland distance star have been chosen as recipient's of the NGA’s annual Awards; CET Dirty Dilly winning the 51st Annual NGA Rural Rube Award as the nation’s top sprinter for 2021, and Arkans Mabel capturing the Flashy Sir Award as the best distance greyhound in the land. Dirty Dilly edged out Craigie Delegate in voting for this year's Rural Rube, while the Flashy Sir was much closer with Mabel nosing out kennelmate Arkans RB Taz by a single vote to grab the award. A 2018 daughter of SH Avatar-CET Dirty Nicki , CET Dirty Dilly is a West Virginia bred who lit up the Tri State oval over the course of the year, setting records and winning stakes. She ended up leading the nation in wins with a total of 42 for the year. She captured the West Virginia Owners and Breeder's Sprint as well as the $100,000 Tri State Challenge and, along the way, set the 550 yard track record Tri State running a blistering 29.23 back in September. She was also voted Captain of the All American team by the NGA. CET Dirty Dilly Owned and raced by Carl Tomblin II, Dilly was the most consistent sprinter in the land over the entire year. She won her first start in January and from there would win 41 more times including finishing off a ten race win streak by breaking the 5/16 track record. Earlier in the year she had posted a record 16 wins in a row at the Tri State oval. Incredibly, from March 17 to December 30, she ran worse than 2nd only one time (4th). Dilly would finish the year with a 55-42-9-0-1 record, missing the pay sheet only three times the entire year! A much deserved award for this fabulous sprinter. Congratulations to Carl Tomblin and all the connections of CET Dirty Dilly . Runner-up in the Rural Rube voting was Lester Raines and John Draper's Craigie Delegate . This son of Superior Panama-Craigiecrushinit picked up three stake victories in 2021 and finished the year with 27 wins against the best at Southland. He captured the Southland Juvenile, Darby Henry Male Sprint and the Southland Derby while also grabbing the win title at the West Memphis track. Delegate was raised in Abilene on the Steven Boyd farm. Others receiving notable votes were Suzanne Blair's Teaser's Tickle and Shannon Henry's JS Keephopealive . Voting was much closer for the top spot in the Flashy Sir contest. Only three greyhounds received double digit votes and were separated by a total of two votes total between them. Arkans Mabel won out by one vote over Arkans RB Taz with Goddessofthehunt in third just another vote behind. Arkans Mabel is a brindle son of My Bro Fabio-Arkans BD Spring and was a Southland distance star for the Darren Henry operation. Racing almost exclusively at 660 yards, Mabel captured the Middle Distance Championship on Festival day and finished 2nd in the Razorback Classic to her kennelmate Arkans RB Taz . She would reel off six wins in a row and eight of nine at one stretch on her way to a 4th place finish in the win standings at Southland. She finished the year at 44-16-5-8, a 65% in the trifecta percentage. She is the epitome of a distance star as she ran only one official race less than 660 yards in 2021. Arkans Mabel Mabel , who was also named to the 2021 All American team, is owned by Darren & Rachele Henry and raced for them at Southland. Congratulations to all her connections! The 51st Annual NGA Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards will be presented at the awards ceremonies program at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Thursday night, April 28, during the NGA's Spring Meet. - RAINES/HOOPES "KEPT HOPE ALIVE" IN HOUND MADNESS STAKES | National Greyhound
< Back RAINES/HOOPES "KEPT HOPE ALIVE" IN HOUND MADNESS STAKES Shane Bolender Apr 12, 2021 And then just one remained. Trainer Monte Hoopes had a chance to make it an “all Lester Raines” championship race in the “Hound Madness” Stakes finale on Friday evening, but super pup CRAIGIE DELEGATE was bested by PAT C RAM ROD (Gloria Dorsey Kennel) in the semi-finals. He kept hope alive though with a fast little female named appropriately, JS KEEPHOPEALIVE as she bested ALADDIN (A Ray Kennel) to set up not only your typical one on one matchup, but a male versus female gender duel as well. After dodging most of the thunderstorms in the area up until the 13th race championship, the contest occurred under a “fast track” with only some spurts of light rain occurring. While most of the betting money was placed on PAT C RAM ROD, the crafty 60 pound red fawn female used a quick burst from the #6 post position to grab a quick two length lead entering the first turn. As it turned out, she would need almost the entire length of that early lead at the finish line. PAT C RAM ROD was known to have a tremendous late kick and most everyone thought he had enough to catch just about anyone. That started becoming apparent entering the far (and final) turn as the early lead nearly evaporated as the duo entered the homestretch. As simple as it seemed, one easy move made by JS KEEPHOPEALIVE proved to be a championship winning move. The speedy girl kept tight to the inside part of the track while PAT C RAM ROD floated a bit towards the mid portion of the track. That brief pad to her lead helped her survive her rival’s late rush again near the wire. She won by a mere neck worth of distance, or three hundredths of a second. It was enough to earn Monte Hoopes and the Lester Raines Kennel the first stakes race championship of the season and her backers at the pari-mutuel windows doubled their money on her as an extra treat. JS KEEPHOPEALIVE is owned by Shannon Henry and Lester Raines. Previous Next

< Back FAVORITES POST WINS IN FIRST ROUND OF WVGOBA PANHANDLE SPRINT Stan Pawloski Oct 10, 2022 Four favorites posted opening round victories as the $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Panhandle Championship kicked off Friday afternoon at Wheeling Island. Heading into the Wednesday, Oct. 12, second round, CET Barracuda, RS’s Dark Night, CET Moto Moto and CET Dirty Dan have each accumulated 15 points on the strength of their first-round victories to top the leaderboard. The semi-finals are set for Sunday afternoon, Oct. 16, and the stake final is scheduled for the Friday, Oct. 21, matinee card. TS Pretty Boy and RS’s Power House rounded out the trifecta ticket. RS’s Dark Night rushed to the top early and was never challenged in posting a 4-length victory in 30.20. - CINDERELLA "STRIDES" INTO "GREYT 8" OF HOUND MADNESS | National Greyhound
< Back CINDERELLA "STRIDES" INTO "GREYT 8" OF HOUND MADNESS Shane Bolender Mar 23, 2021 Fifty-six greyhounds have been eliminated from the “Hound Madness” Stakes, and while there were plenty of upsets in the opening round (sound familiar with what is going on with the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament?), after the dust settled from the “Sleek 16” round on Monday, we were left with one true “Cinderella”. XM STRIDE N (T and T Kennel) will face his toughest test in the South Regional Finals this Saturday when he goes head’s up against the #3 seeded ALADDIN (A Ray Kennel), scheduled for the 13th race on that card. The 74 pound black male is proving he might not be overmatched at all, as he won his last two rounds, both of which ALADDIN appeared, catching the red male twice in consecutive races. There is little doubt ALADDIN will likely get the lead once again in this race, but the only question is whether he can hang on this time against a tough closer. History says it will be tough to do. The rest of the regions have mostly favorites involved, especially in the West Regional Finals. It will be a battle of kennelmates as Natalie Looper trained AIR ACE (#1 seed) will face off against #3 seed PAT C RAM ROD for the right to advance to the Furry Four. Much like the South Region, PAT C RAM ROD has yet to lose a race in the “Hound Madness” yet (3 straight victories overall) and has pulled away from AIR ACE in the past two rounds of action. The early lead will be key in this race, as both possess enough late speed to likely hold the other one off at the wire. Of all the regions, this one might be the best overall match up race of the four and is slated for race 3 on the Saturday card. At first glance, the Midwest Regional Final looks to be an easy victory set up for another undefeated greyhound in this tournament, #1 seed CRAIGIE DELEGATE (Lester Raines Kennel). This 69 pound male has won 9 of 11 races on the season and five of his last six. His rival for this Saturday’s race card will be TMC’S SWEETCRAIG (Darren Henry Kennel), a six seed who has a win and two second place finishes (both to CRAIGIE DELEGATE) so far in this stakes event. Even though the two second place finishes have been close races, SWEETCRAIG is not known as a sharp breaker and his late speed seems to kick in a little too late to catch a greyhound of DELEGATE’S speed. If he can improve on that early foot, even modestly, it will make for an interesting finish to the sixth race that day. The East Regional Final will be the eighth race on the performance and feature #2 seed JS KEEPHOPEALIVE (Lester Raines Kennel), who just got caught at the wire in the opening round to finish third by a head (still enough to advance) otherwise she would come into this race undefeated overall. This 60 pound bullet probably has the best rush to the turn of the eight greyhounds remaining, but can be caught near the wire by the right type of greyhound. ELIZA FRASER (Gloria Dorsey) comes into the race as the #5 seed in the region and has yet to win a race, but has two second place efforts in her last two starts (both to JS KEEPHOPEALIVE and both by 1 ½ lengths). This race is the battle of the females, insuring that at least one female will reach the Furry Four round a week from Friday. Each of the four match races will feature win wagering only. Catch all the excitement of the “Hound Madness” Stakes at Southland Casino & Racing. Previous Next

- RF JUANITA CAPTURES FUTURE STARS STAKE | National Greyhound
< Back RF JUANITA CAPTURES FUTURE STARS STAKE Oct 6, 2021 RF Juanita celebrated her second birthday with a victory in Iowa Greyhound Park’s Future Star stakes Saturday, Oct. 2. The red and fawn female broke well and used her strong cornering skills to post a nearly two-length victory. “She needed to get out fast to get a chance to win it,” said Jerry Cole, Superior Kennel trainer. RF Juanita, starting from the 3 box, was in a group with box neighbors BGR Big Foot Joe, of Boeckenstedt Kennel, and North End Jill, of Copper Kettle Kennel. As they neared the first turn, Juanita started to separate. “Once she got her nose in front, I started looking for the 1 (BGR Bottom Up) and 8 (BGR Twistedsista). They were the two main threats.” She powered through the corner to extend a lead she never relinquished. “She runs turns really great,” Cole said. “It obviously helped her tonight.” She posted a 31.35.Others on the board were BGR Bottoms Up, BGR Big Foot Joe and BGR Twistedsista. All are from Boeckenstedt Kennel. The rest finished as follows: KW Bugatti (Jackson Greyhounds), BGR Half Rack (Boeckenstedt Kennel), North End Jill (Copper Kettle Kennel) and Eager Erlene (Copper Kettle Kennel). The purse for the Future Stars was $30,000. The earnings by finish are: $12,000, $6,000, $3,000, $2,400, $2,100, $1,800, $1,500 and $1,200. T’s Capt Phasma, of T and T Kennel, won last year and Revin Devon, of Copper Kettle Kennel, won in 2019. Juanita has been in the money in 25 of 26 races this season. “I can’t believe what she’s been doing. She’s absolutely having a great season,” Cole said. “She’s a very special dog and she’s getting better each time. “I’m pleased at the way she’s been running,” Cole said. “And I’m happy for how well she’s doing.” Even as the 2021 season nears its end, there are more races in store for the now 2-year-old from Gable Sour Cream and RF River. RF River won the King and Queen stakes at Iowa Greyhound Park in 2017 and the Iowa Breeders’ Cup in 2016. The Iowa Breeders’ Cup is in the works, along with a couple of stakes the final day of the season on Oct. 31, the Secretary’s Choice and the Au Revoir. The Breeders’ Cup final is Sunday, Oct. 24.
