Breaking from the one hole, the Lester Raines Kennel sprinter rushed up to the lead around the first turn, then opened up a 2-length cushion down the backstretch before winning by 2 ½ lengths in a quick 29.58. Abbi’s Eagle (Jacobs Racing) took runner up honors while Penrose Boss (Blanchard) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Heading into the Wednesday, Nov. 17, second round, both middle distance 3/8 racers have accumulated 15 points to top the leaderboard. The semi-finals are set for Sunday, Nov. 21, and the stake final is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 27. Capsule looks at the first round races follow: RS’s Prime Time, an overwhelming favorite in his race, rocketed to an early lead and never looked back in winning by 2 ½ lengths in 38.03. CET Dirty Gurly and GLS Fast Food rounded out the trifecta ticket. The top 32-point earners from the first four rounds will compete Wednesday afternoon with the top 16-point earners advancing to the semifinals Saturday afternoon, December 5. The top eight-point earners following the semifinals will compete in the Palm Beach Kennel Club $100,000 Legacy Grand Championship finale on Saturday evening, December 12. The eight semifinalists who did not make the final will compete in the Andrew Holmes Memorial Award Feature on Legacy night. Points carryover throughout the entire stake series. Qualifying races will be held in races 10, 12, 14 and 15. < Back SOUTHLAND DERBY CONSOLATION Aug 27, 2021 Congrats go out to “Fiesta Grace”, your winner of the 2021 Southland Derby Consolation stakes at Southland Casino & Racing last Saturday afternoon. “Gracie” as she is known as in the kennel, ran a career best winning time of 31.67 when she sailed past the finish line first for trainer Natalie Looper of the Gloria Dorsey Kennel. She didn’t take long to establish her dominance in the race, going box to wire and opening a big lead past the first turn of the race that nobody in the field could catch. She went off at 5-1 odds to win the race, returning $12.20 for every $2 placed on her nose to win. She is owned by Jeff Blair and Michael Montoya. Barts Blue Blood finished second for the Charter Kennel while Northshore Kennel’s fan favorite, Chillaxification rallied for third. Previous Next

< Back HELL BENT'S FAST START EARNS SPOT IN WHEELING HISTORY Stan Pawloski Aug 7, 2023 NOTE: August marks 47 years of greyhound racing at Wheeling. In conjunction with the anniversary, this column will feature articles related to the track’s history. Today, greyhounds reaching Grade AA undefeated during their careers are highlighted. Heading into the 2023 racing season at Wheeling Island, 29 greyhounds had climbed the ladder straight to Grade AA after winning their Maiden debut. Now there’s 30. The latest to accomplish the feat in the 47-year history of Wheeling Downs/Island is Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s Hell Bent. The youngster won his first Maiden race in early June before capturing Grades D, C, B and A in successive starts. An August 2021 greyhound out of Konomi-Liz Cambage, Hell Bent is trained by Jill Spicer and owned by David Strong. He finished fourth in his first Grade AA trip. Of those 30 greyhounds, nine went on to capture at least their first start against Grade AA company. The first Wheeling greyhound to go straight to Grade AA undefeated was Royal Onyx in 1978, winning his first five starts – Maiden and Grades C, B, A and AA. The last racer to accomplish the feat before Hell Bent was JS Wanna Bee in 2020, capturing her first five races – Maiden and Grades D, C, B and A. The Wheeling record for most victories in a row to start a career is 12 by Kiowa Sweet Trey in 2001. The sprint star won Maiden, Grades D, C, B, A and seven in Grade AA. Kiowa Sweet Trey broke the mark of 10 straight career-opening wins by Onie Reid in 1985-86. Onie Reid was victorious in Maiden, Grades C, B, A and six in Grade AA. Although Kiowa Sweet Trey and Onie Reid are regarded as two of the best greyhounds to ever grace the Wheeling oval, most of the racers who reached Grade AA undefeated weren’t superstars. It’s a rare feat as only 30 greyhounds have turned the trick since the track opened on Aug. 18, 1976. Following are the nine greyhounds who raced straight to Grade AA undefeated and then won at least their first top grade start, year accomplished and number of career-opening victories: Kiowa Sweet Trey – July through December 2001; won 12 in a row; Maiden, D, C, B, A, seven in AA.
