  • SPRING MEET TO GO ON | National Greyhound

< Back SPRING MEET TO GO ON Julia Ward May 6, 2020 Dear members, The NGA board met on Tuesday, May 5 and we have decided to move forward with the spring meet on the dates announced previously. Schooling will be held on May 24, 25, 27 and 28 with races on June 1 and 4 and the auction on Friday, June 5. Please note that this decision is based on the State of Kansas and Dickinson County guidelines and could change based on new orders from either of the governmental entities. So, it is possible that if they change the allowed number of participants in gatherings or put another shelter in place order prior to the meet, it may be canceled altogether and we will not have another meet until the fall. The auction has been tentatively scheduled for 9:30 AM on June 5 and, at this time, looks to be held at the Greyhound Hall of Fame. However, the time and place are subject to change. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and for everyone safety, we have decided not to hold any evening events. The NGA board will have a very informal check in meeting at 9:30 AM Tuesday, June 2. We will have a formal board meeting a few weeks following the meet and take up any other matters as needed during the meet. There will not be a general meeting at this time for this meet. Also we decided to lower the percentage for online buyers from 5% down to 3%. The 2% buyers fees will still be in place, which was voted and passed by the board for the 2020 spring meet. So instead of 7% being paid by the buyers to buy online it will be 5%. For the fall we are still scheduled to do 5% for online bidding and a 2% fee for all buyers. And while we look forward to seeing everyone and encourage attendance, we also caution that there will be limited capacities to events and limited seating with social distancing guidelines in place, so please keep that in mind when you make your plans. Replays, information and the auction will be available on-line for everyone's benefit! Unfortunately due to the circumstances of COVID-19 the board has truly struggled in making the decisions concerning the spring meet. We want what’s best for everyone the buyers and sellers, or whole industry! We understand the need for the farmers for this meet and we share the concerns of the buyers due to the situations with the race tracks. Obviously, not everyone is going to be happy, everyone has their own opinion on how things should be done. Please remember you are more than welcome to run in your district to be on the board. Please remember the board is here for you the members and our industry. We are all facing extreme challenges, the best thing we can do is be unified! God bless! Sincerely, Julia Ward-NGA President Previous Next

  • $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC FINAL PREVIEW, RACE ANALYSIS | National Greyhound

< Back $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC FINAL PREVIEW, RACE ANALYSIS Oct 22, 2021 Blanchard Kennel’s Penrose Boss heads up a solid field for the Saturday afternoon final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic at Wheeling Island. The 3-year-old sprinter had two victories and two seconds in the four qualifying round races to accumulate a leading 50 points. Penrose Boss finished fourth in the 2020 Mountaineer Classic championship final. Three kennels – Blanchard, Lester Raines and Jacobs Racing – each have two greyhounds in the final while the Imark and Steve Sarras kennels have one finalist. Completing this year’s championship final field are Teaser’s Tickle (Lester Raines Kennel), 46 points; Frappe (Blanchard Kennel), 45 points; Abbi’s Eagle (Jacobs Racing Kennel), Ding Dong Ditch (Imark Kennel) and CTW Black Forest (Steve Sarras Kennel), 37 points each; Abbi’s Frontman (Jacobs Racing Kennel) and RS’s Dark Night (Lester Raines Kennel), 34 points each. Abbi’s Eagle and Abbi’s Frontman are littermates. Post positions for the final, from the rail out, follow: 1—Teaser’s Tickle, 2—CTW Black Forest, 3—Abbi’s Eagle, 4—RS’s Dark Night, 5—Penrose Boss, 6—Ding Dong Ditch, 7—Frappe, 8—Abbi’s Frontman. The winning greyhound in the championship final will earn $42,000. The complete purse breakdown is second, $18,000; third, $13,000; fourth, $10,000; fifth and sixth, $5,500 each; and seventh and eighth, $3,000 each. The stakes final will be Race 12 on the Saturday matinee race card. Following are capsule looks at the finalists: 1—TEASER’S TICKLE (Lester Raines Kennel, trainer Joel Roden) – had three straight impressive victories by a combined 23 lengths in the qualifiers after a seventh in the first round; one of the youngest greyhounds in the final, the pup broke his Maiden in August and has won eight out of his 13 career races. 2—CTW BLACK FOREST (Steve Sarras Kennel, trainer Barb Long) – had two wins, a third and an eighth in the early rounds; the frontrunner went to the lead in three out of his four qualifying races, all from inside posts; made the final after returning to racing in September after being off for three months with an injury. 3—ABBI’S EAGLE (Jacobs Racing Kennel, trainer Louise Strong) – had two wins, a fourth and a sixth in the qualifying round races; while more of a closer from just off the pace, has gone to the front on occasion; also off for three months in the summer rehabbing an injury before coming back in September. 4—RS’S DARK NIGHT (Lester Raines Kennel, trainer Joel Roden) – had a win, a second, a third and a sixth in the qualifying races; captured the West Virginia-bred Juvenile championship last month; not a ton of box speed, but possesses a power rush to the first turn and finishing speed; prefers to race on the outside. 5—PENROSE BOSS (Blanchard Kennel, trainer Sarah Blanchard) – had two victories and two seconds in the qualifiers to top all the finalists with 50 points; needs to find room early in the race, does have some closing speed; has been a mark of consistency, hitting the pay sheet (top four) in 14 out of his last 15 trips. 6—DING DONG DITCH (Imark Kennel, trainer DiAnn Derr) – had a win, two seconds and a sixth in the preliminary round races; probably the biggest surprise to earn a spot in the stakes final; raced from all inside posts in the qualifiers, so the midtrack hole will be a challenge; will need to pop the box to have a shot. 7—FRAPPE (Blanchard Kennel, trainer Sarah Blanchard) – had two wins, a second and a fourth in the early rounds; multi-dimensional – has the ability to go to the front or come from behind; prefers an inside post, but had two nice efforts from the five hole in the early rounds; needs to outbreak the rail crashing eight. 8—ABBI’S FRONTMAN (Jacobs Racing Kennel, trainer Louise Strong) – had two wins and two sixths in the preliminary round races; earned his spot in the final with a win from a favorable one box in the semifinals; two sixth place finishes in the qualifiers were from the outside, so post position not too kind. RACE ANALYSIS: One thing is certain about this year’s Mountaineer Classic final – it’s wide open as many of the greyhounds have drawn less than favorable posts for their running styles. One greyhound, however – CTW Black Forest – has drawn a preferred inside post position and should break sharp from the box, move to the rail and rush to the early lead. Greyhounds on each side of CTW Black Forest – Teaser’s Tickle and Abbi’s Eagle – are in line to get trips behind the frontrunner. One of those two could claim the championship as CTW Black Forest has shown a tendency to be a tad short in the homestretch but still looms as a ticket play. Don’t count out Frappe, although she would prefer an inside hole. In four out of her last five races, Frappe has been first or second at the first turn with three of those races from the difficult five box. If she hits it from the seven post, things will get interesting. All of these greyhounds are talented or they wouldn’t be in the final, but each will need a little luck on their side as well. Congrats to all the finalists and connections and good luck in the championship. Previous Next

  • MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC FINAL PREVIEW, RACE ANALYSIS | National Greyhound

< Back MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC FINAL PREVIEW, RACE ANALYSIS Stan Pawloski Oct 22, 2020 Blanchard Kennel’s L’s Luv It heads up a stellar field for the Saturday afternoon final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic at Wheeling Island. The 4-year-old sprinter had three victories and a third in the four qualifying round races to accumulate a leading 52 points. L’s Luv It was third in the 2018 Mountaineer Classic final and fourth in last year’s championship. An August 2016 greyhound out of KC And All-L’s Morgan, L’s Luv It is the first Wheeling greyhound to make the final of the track’s featured stakes race three straight years. TK Quick Strike captured the Mountaineer Classic in both 2008 and 2009. Completing this year’s championship final field are Atascocita Birma (Abrahamson Kennel), 43 points; Penrose Boss (Blanchard Kennel), 42 points; Craigie Pirate (Lester Raines Kennel), TNT Free Falling (Patriot/Taplin Kennel) and TNT Twister City (Patriot/Taplin) 39 points each; CG’s Penny Shoe (Abrahamson Kennel), 36 points; and AD Black Falcon (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel), 35 points. Blanchard Kennel’s Easi Lil Charlie also had 35 points but lost the tiebreaker to AD Black Falcon, who had a pair of victories in the qualifying rounds. Post positions for the final, from the rail out, follow: 1—Craigie Pirate, 2—L’s Luv It, 3—AD Black Falcon, 4—TNT Free Falling, 5—Atascocita Birma, 6—CG’s Penny Shoe, 7—TNT Twister City, 8—Penrose Boss. Following are capsule looks at the finalists: 1—CRAIGIE PIRATE (Lester Raines Kennel, trainer Joel Roden) – had a win, a second and two thirds in the qualifiers; youngster has been solid in his first year of racing, hitting the superfecta ticket in 20 out of 24 starts; will need to pop the box to outrush all the speed merchants; should benefit from the red blanket. 2—L’S LUV IT (Blanchard Kennel, trainer Sarah Blanchard) – had three victories and a third in the qualifiers, a mere length from sweeping all four early round races; caught fire as the stakes began and the 4-year-old hasn’t let up; prefers an inside post, can go to the front on occasion, has some closing ability. 3—AD BLACK FALCON (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel, trainer Jill Spicer) – had two wins, a fourth and an eighth in the qualifying round races; has only missed the pay sheet four times in 22 starts this year after coming up from Gulf Greyhound Park; if near lead early, has some closing power to pick off the short early speedsters. 4—TNT FREE FALLING (Patriot/Taplin Kennel, trainer Joe Otto) – had a win, a second and two thirds in the preliminary round races; her game is box speed with a power rush to the first turn; early speed has carried her to nearly a triple double trifecta record this year – 9 seconds, 9 thirds and 8 fourths; needs to hit it. 5—ATASCOCITA BIRMA (Abrahamson Kennel, trainer Tom Engle) – had two wins, a second and a fifth in the qualifying races; has rocketed to the front in four out of her last six races as she’s become more consistent with her break; opened career at Palm Beach before moving over to Gulf Greyhound Park. 6—CG’s PENNY SHOE (Abrahamson Kennel, trainer Tom Engle) – had a win, two seconds and a seventh in the early round starts; not lightning fast out of the box, but possesses a power drive to the turn; captured 26 out of 32 races at Tri-State Greyhound Park this year, including 13 straight Grade AA trips. 7—TNT TWISTER CITY (Patriot/Taplin Kennel, trainer Joe Otto) – had a win, a second and two thirds in the preliminary round races; has rushed to the front early and maintained the lead until the homestretch in five out of his last six starts, hitting the trifecta ticket in each race; speedster needs to pop the box. 8—PENROSE BOSS (Blanchard Kennel, trainer Sarah Blanchard) – had a win, two seconds and a third in the early rounds; the only true closer in the championship final displayed his power in the semifinal round with a 6 ½-length win from a preferred midtrack box; opened career at Orange Park in Florida. RACE ANALYSIS This year’s Mountaineer Classic is loaded with early speed. The big questions: Which greyhound hits it out of the box and gets the front early in the final? If it’s a fast track, will the early leader go away and hide from the rest of the field? Will a greyhound with some bottom be close enough to overtake the leaders? The field is solid from top to bottom. In the finalists’ 32 qualifying round races, they amassed a combined 12 wins, 8 seconds, 8 thirds and 1 fourth – only missing the superfecta ticket three times. Look for TNT Free Falling to hit the lid and rush to the early lead, followed by L’s Luv It on the rail. Next in line will be Craigie Pirate and Penrose Boss. With TNT Twister City slashing to the inside from the seven hole, he should seal off Atascocita Birma and CG’s Penny Shoe – giving Penrose Boss a clean rush to the turn from the outside box. On the backstretch and far turn, TNT Free Falling will maintain her lead but pressure will be mounting in the stretch as L’s Luv It and Penrose Boss kick it into another gear. Could it be a dead heat winner? Let’s go with a 1-2-4-8 trifecta and superfecta boxes. Previous Next

  • RADER RACING KENNEL’S “AUGGIE DOGGIE” AUGUST DAWN WINS PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB’S $20,000 DICK ANDREWS FUTURITY! | National Greyhound

< Back RADER RACING KENNEL’S “AUGGIE DOGGIE” AUGUST DAWN WINS PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB’S $20,000 DICK ANDREWS FUTURITY! Jeff Prince Dec 31, 2019 West Palm Beach, Fl. – Sometimes you know who will win a race a few seconds after the starting box opens. Sometimes you find out the winner as the result of a photo finish. In the twenty-second running of the $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity, it may have taken about three seconds after the race began that you knew who the championship blanket would be placed on. When the starting box opened, it was August Dawn breaking on top and extending his lead to the first turn. As written in the summary of the final, “If August Dawn breaks alertly and garners the early lead, there will be no catching him.” Now comes the surprises. GV On A Quest , the longest shot on the board at 37-1, outbroke her inside competition and reached the rail, outgunning the undefeated qualifying finalist, RF Oka . As the finalist raced into the final turn, Atascocita Jarta , going off at 17-1, found room on the inside and secured her spot as the third-place finisher, behind GV On A Quest . Rounding out the Superfecta was the hard-closing finalist Skiddy Hotrod , who himself went off at 34-1. August Dawn was victorious by three lengths and traversed the 545-Yard Royal Palm Course in a speedy time of 29.79 seconds, returned a healthy $19.60 to the delight of his supporters. The newly-crowned champ collected a cool $10,000 for his impressive box-to-wire victory. The complete order of finish: 1st – 6. August Dawn (Kinda Cruel Red – SG’s Phil Niekro, Rader Racing) 2nd – 3. GV On A Quest (KC And All – GV Jewel Quest, James Douglas) 3rd – 5. Atascocita Jarta (Gigawatt – Atascocita Deja, Suncoast) 4th – 7.
