< Back FIRST ROUND $30,000 DUBUQUE CLASSIC Aug 24, 2020 The $30.000 Dubuque Classic Stakes got underway Saturday, August 22, with four first-round winners. Rasta, one of two Copper Kennel winners, posted the best time, 39.91 seconds, the only greyhounds to break 40 seconds in the first round. Rasta, 12-7-3-0, is a 69-pounder, born September 18, 2018 out of Nashapelli – Fansome, Rasha broke away a bit in the homestretch to win by two lengths, her third straight victory. Kennelmate Big Joe Stoffen pulled away with authority to win by three and half lengths is his DCS debut. Stoffen is an 84-pounder, born May 18,2018, out of Will Bill Reeves – Little Iowa. He moves to 17-3-2-3 on the season. It’s My Life (T And T Kennel) rallied from fourth place in the homestretch to win his race by a half-length. It’s My Life, a 72-pounder, born Nov. 25, 2016 out of Stevie Pree – Medicine Woman. The veteran is 16-11-2-1 on the season. XK Want It (Xtrem Hess) rallied from second in the homestretch to win her first-round test by two lengths, the only female among the first four winners. XK Want It, a 59-pounder, born October 19, 2017 out of Flying Westover – Gable Annabeth, moves to 24-9-4-1 on the season. The victory snapped a five-race non-win streak. < Back $64,000 SPRINT CLASSIC SECOND-ROUND RESULTS Feb 20, 2020 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A change of scenery has done wonders for Ryeit. Competing in his first career stakes series, the ABC Racing kennel greyhound joined 15 other dogs to advance Wednesday in the $64,000 Sprint Classic at Derby Lane. Half of the 32-dog field was eliminated, with the remaining sprinters moving on to Saturday’s third qualifying round in Races 6 (8:39 p.m.) and 10 (9:47). The Feb. 29 championship field will be determined after next Wednesday’s final qualifier. Dogs earn points in each race based on order of finish on a 16-10-8-6-3-2-1-0 scale. First place in the 550-yard event pays $25,000. Ryeit remained in contention with his second consecutive second-place finish to raise his point total to 20. Favored in wagering at 8-5, Ryeit overcame a tardy start to finish second by a length behind Bartley Corporation kennel’s Where U Want Me, who paid a series high $24.60 to win in 30.47 seconds and elevated his point total to 18. “Ryeit ran well,’’ ABC Racing kennel owner Don Burk said. “He missed his break, went down to the first (turn) on the outside trying to go around (other dogs), and he closed.’’ Ryeit is one of two ABC Racing sprinters to move on. He is joined by Son Shine, who has 18 points following a second-place finish behind Lester Raines kennel’s Super C Casino, who paid $7.20 to win in 30.57 seconds. Son Shine lost by two lengths after setting the pace by four lengths early. Super C Casino has 19 points. LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel and Floyd kennel’s Shoot The Breeze both remained undefeated in the series and share the points lead at 32. LK’s Crush N It paid $3.20 to win after clocking 30.13 seconds for his 71st lifetime victory. Shoot The Breeze won his career-best fifth race in a row and returned $3.80 to win with a career- and meet-best time of 30.00 seconds. Both dogs won by six lengths. Ryeit, a 29-month-old male from a litter by Heyl and Elvara, has shown dramatic improvement since arriving at Derby Lane in December. “I got him from Southland (in West Memphis, Ark.) not too long ago and he’s been a nice dog,’’ Burk said. “He’s a money maker. . . . He hits the (tote) board all the time.’’ Owned by William O’Donnell and his North Shore Kennel of Lynn (Mass.), Ryeit struggled at Southland. He made only four official starts and was schooled 10 other times from March to September in 2019. Ryeit never finished better than fourth in the maiden ranks, and was subsequently sent to the Florida West Coast track. Ryeit has turned things around quickly at Derby Lane. After a pair of schooling races – where he finished first and second – the 72-pound dog has been a model of consistency. In 15 starts, he has only missed two paychecks (lower than a fourth-place finish) – including three wins and seven second-place showings. His best clocking has been 30.46 seconds on Jan. 25 under trainer Joy Burk, Don’s wife. “Everything’s got to go your way to beat those real good dogs like (LK’s) Crush N It, (LK’s) Santorini (Lashmet) and O Ya Hot Rod (Lester Raines) . . . and Shoot The Breeze is a monster,’’ Don Burk said. “(Ryeit) has got to get an 8 hole, and those other dogs have got to miss their break. You’ve got to run a perfect race, and hope they don’t.“ (Ryeit) has got 20 points, and in the next rounds, you know those other dogs will eat the points up. He’ll probably need 30 (points to advance to the finale). So a third and a fourth (in the upcoming rounds) should be all right for him.’’ Previous Next

< Back TRAINERS THRILLED, PROUD OF ALL-AMERICA HONOREES Stan Pawloski Mar 31, 2021 Abrahamson Kennel’s CG’s Penny Shoe and Blanchard Kennel’s L’s Luv It, both all-Wheeling selections, are All-Americans. Recently, the National Greyhound Association announced the 2020 All-American teams with CG’s Penny Shoe earning first team honors while L’s Luv It was named to the second team. Both sprinters were recognized on the 2020 all-Wheeling team earlier this year. The naming of the All-America teams started in 1963 and pays tribute to the top greyhounds in the country. Historically voted on by members of the American Greyhound Track Operators Association, the award process was turned over to the National Greyhound Association in 2019. The 2020 All-American first team is dominated by competitors from Southland Greyhound Park – unquestionably the toughest racetrack in the country. Joining CG’s Penny Shoe on the first team are JS Flamin Ace (Southland), Chillaxification (Southland), World Ruler (Southland), Air Ace (Southland), LK’s Santorini (Derby Lane), Flying Zulu (Southland) and FGF Mathias (Southland). CG’s Penny Shoe, an October 2017 greyhound out of Jax Oxford-CG’s Marla, had a spectacular year of racing in 2020 in West Virginia. At Tristate Greyhound Park, the sprinter was the track win champion and at Wheeling Island he captured the track’s featured stakes event – the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Sprint – as well as making the final of the West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Panhandle Sprint Stakes. Todd Johnson, CG Penny Shoe’s trainer at Tristate, was ecstatic when he heard the sprint star made first team All-American. “I am tickled to death, so excited, so cool. It’s an honor to train a greyhound like Penny Shoe – it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Johnson said. “I am so proud of him. He’s without a doubt the best greyhound I have ever trained.” In 34 Grade AA starts at Tristate, CG’s Penny Shoe had 24 wins, 3 seconds and 5 thirds. In one stretch of 22 races, he had 19 wins – 12 in a row – 1 second and 2 thirds. “Once Penny Shoe gets a clear look at the lure and out on top, the race is over,” Johnson added. CG’s Penny Shoe came up to Wheeling in late September to compete in the Mountaineer Classic and WVGOBA Sprint. In 12 Wheeling starts, he had 2 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds. His magical moment came in the Mountaineer Classic final where he closed deep in the stretch to catch frontrunner TNT Free Falling to capture Wheeling’s featured stakes event of the year by 1 ½ lengths. “Nobody expected a West Virginia bred to come up to Wheeling and upset all the great Wheeling greyhounds,” Johnson said. CG’s Penny Shoe was trained in Wheeling by Tom Engle, who thought the sprinter’s accomplishments deserved consideration for All-America honors. “I am so proud of Penny Shoe and so happy for his owners, Neil and JC (Abrahamson). Being named All-American is quite an honor,” Engle said. “A lot of the credit for Penny Shoe’s success goes to trainer Todd Johnson in Tristate.” Johnson was quick to spread the credit. “A lot of people had a hand in Penny Shoe’s success – from Jack Stolirchick who raised him the first year in West Virginia, Howard Mosier who finished his training in Florida and trainer Tom Engle in Wheeling,” Johnson said. CG’s Penny She is the second All-American the Abrahamsons have owned. The first was DD’s Nelson in 1987 – arguably the best greyhound to ever race at Wheeling. “We are so excited and so proud of what Penny Shoe achieved last year. It was an exciting year,” Neil Abrahamson said. “It’s a great honor to own a greyhound named an All-American – our first since DD’s Nelson.” Joining L’s Luv It on the 2020 All-American second team are Rasta (Iowa/Southland), LK’s Crush N It (Derby Lane), Killer Tolstoy (Naples/Iowa/Southland), JD Elegant (Iowa/Southland), Bug Brush (Palm Beach/Southland), FGF Avenger (Southland) and Abbi’s Frontman (Palm Beach). L’s Luv It, an August 2016 greyhound out of KC And All-L’s Morgan, has been a mainstay in the Blanchard Kennel the last three years. In 2020, the sprinter made the final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes and was tied for third at the track in victories. The second team All American recognition came as a surprise to trainer James Blanchard. “I didn’t expect Luv It to make an All-American team, it came as a surprise,” Blanchard said. “It’s definitely a great honor and I am super proud of her. She’s had a remarkable racing career at Wheeling.” Last year, L’s Luv It had 14 wins, 9 seconds, 5 thirds and 7 fourths in 44 starts – an 80 percent mark on the superfecta ticket and a 64 percent trifecta finish. She was the first greyhound ever to make the final of the Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes and be named all-Wheeling for three straight seasons. Blanchard had thoughts of retiring the sprint dandy a couple times in 2020, but “each time L’s Luv It got hot. She still had the desire to compete.” In the Mountaineer Classic, L’s Luv It won three out of her four qualifying round races before experiencing a tough trip in the final. L’s Luv It was retired after two races in 2021, going out a winner. “It was special when L’s Luv It retired with a Grade AA win in her last race. That doesn’t happen very often,” Blanchard said. “Besides her talent, she was fortunate to stay healthy most of her career.” Previous Next

< Back TWO SPRINTERS UNBEATEN IN $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC Oct 11, 2021 Two greyhounds – Blanchard Kennel’s Penrose Boss and Jacobs Racing Kennel’s Abbi’s Eagle – are undefeated after two rounds of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic at Wheeling Island. Penrose Boss and Abbi’s Eagle both posted closing victories in the stretch Friday afternoon in the second round. The sprinters have accumulated 30 points. The Lester Raines Kennel had four wins in the second round – Teaser’s Tickle, Craigie Daughtry, CTW Cant Stop It and JS Slush Fund. Other second round winners were Abbi’s Frontman (Jacobs Racing), WW Go Chiefs Go (Wayne Ward) and KB’s Copy Kat (Charter Kennel). The field will be cut to 40 sprinters for the third preliminary round scheduled for Wednesday matinee, Oct. 13. The field will tentatively be cut to 24 sprinters, but could be higher, for the semifinal round on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17. The championship final will be held during the matinee card on Saturday, Oct. 23. < Back JERRY CRUCE OBITUARY May 14, 2021 Jerry D. Cruce of West Memphis Arkansas passed away at home in the early morning hours of April 26, 2021, surrounded by friends and family Jerry was born June 6th, 1946 in Perry, Florida . Jerry trained greyhounds starting in the mid to late 70’s working for the Don Klink kennel in Miami, Florida & then with the Tom Farrell Kennel in Jacksonville, Florida. He spent the last 18 years of his training career with the Bussmann-Balakas kennel at Southland Greyhound Park in West Memphis Arkansas where he is was affectionately known as Papa Smurf. He loved the greyhounds & enjoyed working with them. He enjoyed, the people he worked with & around in the greyhound business, including the haulers & especially the farmers, who raised the dogs. He met his future wife Mary on a blind date in April of 71. They married on 9-15-84 & were married until his passing. He was predeceased by : his parents, John David Cruce and Christine Watson Cruce; his brother Lewis; and his parents-in-law, Eddie and Maria "Constance" Dicandia. He is survived by : his wife Mary Dicandia Cruce; his sons, Bart Falcone, Phillip Falcone and Quinde Falcone Jr. (Yolanda); his grandchildren, Quinde Falcone III, Kim Falcone, Taylor Falcone and Allison Sosne; his great grandchild Nellie Frey Sosne; his goddaughter Chelsea Whitman; his siblings, Reba Cruce Rogers (Freddie), Joseph William Cruce (Derry) and Richard Harold Cruce (Carol); and his sister-in-law Bessie Cruce. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. < Back Year In Review: Highlights from Wheeling's 2019 Racing Season Stan Pawloski Jan 9, 2020 Another thrilling and fun-filled season of Wheeling Island greyhound racing is in the books and more excitement is anticipated in 2020. There were numerous highlights on the track throughout 2019, including the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic, two West Virginia bred stake events and win streaks which generated plenty of fan interest. In addition, a number of youngsters broke their Maiden and look like future stars. Top greyhound honors went to Patriot/Taplin Kennel’s GF La Duena, who became the first Wheeling greyhound to reach the 30-win plateau since 2009 when Kiowa Power Pak posted 31 victories. La Duena posted 32 wins. The Blanchard Kennel, trained by James E. Blanchard, captured the 2019 kennel championship after finishing runner up to the Lester Raines Kennel in 2018. In the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic on a rainy day in late October, Wayne Ward Kennel’s WW’s Chewbacca took charge on the far turn before pulling away from Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s Axtrem Bomb, the early pacesetter, for a 2-length victory in 29.72 to capture the racetrack’s featured stakes event for 2019. Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel’s BGR Bonecrusher closed late to round out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final order of finish were L’s Luv It (Blanchard Kennel), fourth; L’s Griz (Blanchard Kennel), fifth; TNT Coal Trickle (Steve Sarras Kennel), sixth; AMF Bystander (A Ray Kennel), seventh; and Barts Sea Sail (Charter Kennel), eighth. WW’s Chewbacca broke in at Wheeling Island before a short stint at Southland Park. In the qualifying rounds, the sprinter was a mark of consistency – a win, a second, a third and a fourth in the four rounds. In the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile in late September, Abrahamson Kennel’s CG’s Sneaker rocketed to an early lead and then held off her brother CG’s Penny Shoe by a length at the wire in 29.84 to capture the stakes crown. Rounding out the trifecta ticket was CET Sassy (Steve Sarras Kennel). Completing the final order of finish were Mac’s Zaxxon (A Ray Kennel), fourth; CET Little Razz (Steve Sarras Kennel), fifth; TS Shaq (Steve Sarras Kennel), sixth; Mac’s Crabtree (A Ray Kennel), seventh; and TS Tito Ortiz (Steve Sarras Kennel), eighth. In the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship in late November, A Ray Kennel’s Mac’s Trudeaux pulled away in the stretch for a 6 ½-length victory in 38.11. Abrahamson Kennel’s MO’s Live Oak took runner up honors while Lester Raines Kennel’s RS’s Buckeyebuck rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the order of finish were CET Sassy (Steve Sarras Kennel), fourth; RS’s Hammerdown (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), fifth; CET Hellen Ann (Steve Sarras Kennel), sixth; Mac’s Murdoch (A Ray Kennel), seventh; and CET Earthquake (Steve Sarras Kennel), eighth. The longest winning streak during the 2019 racing season was seven in a row by Mac’s Glightfoot. The 3/8th racer, who came to Wheeling in March from Tri-State Greyhound Park, also had a six-race victory streak last year. Three other greyhounds had six-race win steaks in 2019 – GF La Duena (twice), BGR Later Gator and Flyin Michiyoshi (streak started in December 2018 and extended into January). Imark Grande won five in a row. Several other greyhounds captured four straight victories – GF La Duena, L’s Griz, High Wire Willy, FF Biscayne, Imark Solo, BGR Whysoserious, JS Drinkmepretty, TNT Coal Trickle, ZB Tremonti and JS Go Flex. There was an influx of greyhounds to Wheeling in 2019, most from Southland, Iowa and Derby Lane. < Back 2021 ALL-WHEELING TEAM SELECTED, ABBI'S GUSTA WIN CAPTAIN Stan Pawloski Feb 7, 2022 Abbi’s Gusta Win has been selected captain of the 2021 all-Wheeling team. The Jacobs Kennel sprint star, owned by Michael Orlandi and trained by Louise Strong, tied for second in wins at Wheeling Island last year with 19 despite missing three months of the racing season. All of his victories were in Grade AA. Abbi’s Gusta Win, who has raced at Wheeling Island his entire career except for three Maiden starts at Southland Greyhound Park in March 2020, posted a five-race and a pair of three-race win streaks in 2021. He was a mark of consistency – hitting the quiniela ticket in 70 percent of his races and having a 76 percent mark in the trifecta and an 84 percent finish on the superfecta ticket. Littermate Abbi’s Frontman made the all-Wheeling team, giving the Jacobs Racing Kennel two spots on the 10-greyhound unit. The Lester Raines Kennel had the most all-Wheeling honorees with four selections – JS Slush Fund, RS’s Dark Night, RS Big D and Teaser’s Tickle. The Blanchard Kennel had two representatives – Frappe and Penrose Boss – while rounding out the team are Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s AD Black Falcon and Charter Kennel’s Oshkosh Heart. The all-Wheeling team was selected by local greyhound historian Robin Reed and Pawloski. The criteria used to determine the selections included number of wins, winning percentage, win streaks, stakes performances and overall records. Accomplishments of the all-Wheeling members follow: ABBI’S GUSTA WIN (37-19-7-2-3) – tied for second in wins, all 19 in Grade AA; had a 5-race win streak and a pair of 3-race win streaks; had 15 wins, 5 seconds, 1 third and 2 fourths in a 23-race stretch; 84 percent superfecta mark; 76 percent trifecta mark. AD BLACK FALCON (51-20-8-5-0) – track win champion, 19 out of 20 victories in Grade AA or TAA 3/8th; had 4-race and 3-race win streaks; in 12-race stretch had 9 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third; 65 percent on the superfecta and trifecta tickets. OSHKOSH HEART (37-19-3-5-3) – tied for second in wins, 13 of 19 victories in Grade AA; one stretch won eight out of nine Grade AA races; had a 5-race win streak and a pair of 3-race win streaks; 81 percent superfecta mark; 68 percent trifecta finish. JS SLUSH FUND (50-19-8-6-4) – tied for second in wins, 13 of 19 victories in Grade AA; had 4-race and 3-race win streaks; had a stretch of five wins in six Grade AA trips; 74 percent superfecta mark; 66 percent trifecta finish. FRAPPE (50-17-5-8-6) – third in wins, 13 of 17 victories in Grade AA; finalist Mountaineer Sprint Classic; had 5-race and 3-race win streaks; 72 percent superfecta mark; 60 percent trifecta finish. ABBI’S FRONTMAN (46-16-7-6-7) – fourth in wins, 15 out of 16 victories in Grade AA; finalist Mountaineer Sprint Classic; 78 percent superfecta finish; 63 percent trifecta mark. RS BIG D (26-14-3-2-2) – tied for fifth in wins, 11 of 14 wins in Grade TAA 3/8; had a 5-race and a pair of 3-race win streaks; in a 9-race stretch, had 8 wins and 1 fourth; 81 percent superfecta mark; 73 percent trifecta finish. RS’S DARK NIGHT (30-14-8-2-3) – tied for fifth in wins, 9 victories in Grade AA; had a pair of 3-race win streaks; won WVGOBA Juvenile Stakes; fourth in Mountaineer Sprint Classic; 90 percent superfecta mark; 80 percent trifecta finish. TEASER’S TICKLE (21-9-2-1-0) – 4 wins in Grade AA; had a 4-race win streak; captured the Mountaineer Sprint Classic; 60 percent superfecta and trifecta mark. PENROSE BOSS (40-7-15-6-5) – third in the Mountaineer Sprint Classic; 83 percent superfecta finish; 70 percent trifecta mark. Heading into the Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 13, second round, the five sprinters – CET Littles (Imark), CET Dirty Skinny (Imark), Best Of Times (Steve Sarras), Lord Of The Rings (Steve Sarras) and CG’s Sun Storm (Code Red) have accumulated 15 points to top the leader board. The semi-finals are set for Sunday, Nov. 17, and the Panhandle stake final is scheduled for Saturday matinee, Nov. 23.
