- PBKC PRESENTS ROUND-THREE ACTION IN THE $50,000 JAMES W. PAUL 3/8THS MILE DERBY | National Greyhound
< Back PBKC PRESENTS ROUND-THREE ACTION IN THE $50,000 JAMES W. PAUL 3/8THS MILE DERBY Feb 18, 2020 West Palm Beach, Fl. – After an exciting set of second round qualifiers, round-three action for the 89th and final running of Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul Three-Eighths Mile Derby takes place Wednesday afternoon, February 13. Four qualifying races will be held, with the top 16-point earners advancing to the semifinals Sunday afternoon, February 23. After two rounds of qualifying, only one entry has a shot of entering the semifinals undefeated, Koppe, Staats & Collins Kennel’s Pat C Snickers (Pat C Clement – Pat C Deception). A quick look at the round-three qualifiers: Race 10 : This event features three athletes who drew in favorable post positions, #1 O Ya Praire Wind (Oya Stan The Man – O Ya Chewie, Lester Raines Kennel), #6 JD Android (JD Titanium – Allisonracinteam, Brindle) and #7 Buyusumnewshoes (Superior Panama – Joy Giovanni, Rader Racing). All three have already secured a spot in the semifinals, but it is important to build up that point total to be guaranteed a slot in the finale. Race 12 : There’s no doubt that the fan favorite will be #7 B’s Cappuccino (SH Avatar – Oaks Mocha, Janie Carroll). Sandwiched between the slow slowest breakers in the race will give Cappuccino a clear shot at garnering the early lead. Race 14 : The post-time favorite appears to be #3 Slatex Beretta (Flying Fired Up – Slatex Albany, Janie Carroll). With two of the race’s slowest breakers to her immediate right, Beretta should be able to outrush the competition to the first turn. However, keep a keen eye on #2 NB’s Bloodsister (Trent Lee – NB’s Classic Cat, Royal Racing Team) who has a legitimate shot at getting loose early. Race 15 : This contest features the only undefeated Derby entry, #4 Pat C Snickers , and in actuality, this could be the easiest field she has faced in qualifying. A crisp and clean break most likely will lead Snickers to the semifinals with a clean record. Post time for the first race Wednesday afternoon is 1:00 p.m. The $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Three-Eighths Mile Championship final will be contested Saturday afternoon, February 29, and is one of the nation’s longest-running stake events. The Derby is named in honor of humanitarian, greyhound owner and dedicated supporter of greyhound adoption James W. Paul. Previous Next
- FULTON FUTURE STAR HAD A "NOSE" UP IN FUTURITY | National Greyhound
< Back FULTON FUTURE STAR HAD A "NOSE" UP IN FUTURITY Shane Bolender Sep 8, 2020 He was the best young star during qualifying, nearly regardless of what metric you were using. Owner Kevin Fulton had a dual brother combination of young stars out of SH AVATAR that came into the 2020 Great American Greyhound Futurity with little history to go off of. FGF MATHIAS sure looked the part though. He was wasting little time climbing the grade ladder at Southland, earning a four race win streak a week or so before qualifying began and reached grade “B”. Once qualifying began, the “new puppy dust” started to wear off quickly and he was establishing himself to be one of the likely favorites to win it all. The first three rounds netted two wins and a second by a solo length behind youngster CTW BLACK FOREST who was one of the hottest greyhounds in those opening qualifying rounds. Those 40 points were easily enough to coast into the second set of three qualifying rounds. However, just like life itself, nobody really cares about what you did yesterday. What are you going to do now? The 76 pound brindle male responded in similar fashion. He won two of the next three rounds as well, finishing second this time to eventual fellow finalist AMOS DECKER, despite running into trouble early. Mathias nearly went last to first in such a style that you wondered just how fast and good is this young budding star?? His “little” brother (he is 3 pounds lighter), FGF BRANCH didn’t quite seem to have the talent his bigger brother did. In fact, the first three rounds were a bit shaky as he only earned 15 points with two third place finishes and a seventh. He survived the cut to the field and enjoyed the reset of the points to zero where he made the most of the second opportunity. We went undefeated in the final three rounds, being the only greyhound in the field to do so. Well, he hadn’t faced his brother in any of those three races, but he did beat fellow finalists SNL VIPER and AMOS DECKER. Plus he got a bonus in drawing the one box for the championship too. ELIZA FRASER (Gloria Dorsey Kennel) could be best summed up by saying she got stronger each and every race in qualifying. She was one of two females to make the championship field, but quickly dismissed any doubters about her skillset when she waxed a semi-finals field by just over seven lengths. The inside runner also drew a nice blue blanket for her run to the championship race, which would be her third straight start from the inside. The previous two attempts resulted in that big victory and a close second place effort. JS PRETTY FLY (Lester Raines Kennel) was one of two entries in the championship by trainer Monte Hoopes. Her racing style was a bit different from most in the field in the fact that she relied on a good break and even better rush to the first turn to do her damage. She never finished worse than 3rd in any of the six qualifying rounds and although she claimed two wins in those six starts, she had the lead in four of those six. SNL VIPER was the other Monte Hoopes trained entry in the championship and the 69 pound brindle male was boxed just to the outside of his kennelmate. And just like his kennelmate, this SH AVATAR sired youngster relied on his early speed as well. The more concerning part was that although he had the lead in five of his six qualifying rounds, he only held on for one win, which was in the opening round. AMOS DECKER was the second entry for trainer Natalie Looper who had the second most experience in the field with 23 starts (only kennelmate Eliza Fraser had more with 33). Unlike his kennelmate, he had the polar opposite of running styles. While Eliza Fraser liked the inside, Amos Decker loved the outside part of the track. Where Eliza relied on early speed for success, Amos more than not came off the pace. They both got their one win when it mattered the most though (last qualifying round) and all you need to do is have a seat at the table in stakes championships to have a shot. AB HUCK (Charter Kennel) was the third entry into the championship for trainer Stephen Ulrich. This 73 pound red male was probably the least talked about of the three entries thanks to the overwhelming success Branch and Mathias were having during qualifying. Although he won two of his six rounds, it was that last place finish in round 5 that almost sealed his fate out of the championship race. He had to win a tiebreaker against two other greyhounds, and the sole saving grace for him was a second place finish in the fourth round. This midtrack runner also drew on some more luck by drawing a six post for the championship race. SALUD BLACKJACK (Northshore Kennel) seemed destined for the championship race. In the opening round, he fell and finished last. The second round wasn’t much better when he finished fifth. His third place effort in round three earned him a total of 10 qualifying points after three rounds. He just missed not moving on at all. Fourth round action ended up with a seventh place finish, putting this 76 pounder in serious threat of not even making the consolation race. Then a fire struck inside him as he ran a very impressive 2nd to FGF Mathias in round five and then he obliterated a field by 6 ½ lengths that contained the likes of KB’S ROCKYBALBOA and CTW BLACK FOREST. This wide runner also drew the far outside post 8 for the championship. He was as hot as any coming into the finale. And what a finale it would be. When the box opened for the 2020 Great American Greyhound Futurity, nearly all the early speed came flying out of the box that you would expect. JS Pretty Fly, SNL Viper and FGF Branch had a three way duel going into the first turn with Salud Blackjack having all the room he wanted to rush up on the outside. Viper hugged the rail smartly to take control of the race through that first turn as well did Eliza Fraser. Blackjack had an incredibly clean trip around the turn and was closing on the leaders fast. FGF Branch got stepped on some from behind which broke his stride and ended his championship hopes. One greyhound everyone was looking for in the backstretch though was Mathias. And they found him, laying fifth but easily still within striking distance with half the race to go. And he needed 49.99% of it too. By the time the far turn came up, Blackjack had finally worn down Viper and Eliza Fraser couldn’t match his speed either. The one greyhound that could match that late kick was coming fast and quickly and that was Mathias. It would come down to those two in an epic stretch run. Blackjack swung toward the middle of track coming to the finish line, which had Mathias been a rail runner, could have resulted in an easier victory or path. Mathias swung a bit further outside in the stretch run which made the victory even tougher to come by considering the valuable ground he gave up in order to go to that part of the track. In one late last burst, Mathias pulled nearly even with Blackjack when the bright photo finish lights came up. It took a little while to know the results. The photo finish says it all. One greyhound is in extended gait crossing the finish line. The other, in contraction. The difference in a hundredth of a second and those two positions in their running strides resulted in a “win by a head” and a championship by FGF Mathias. If the race was just a hair longer than 583 yards, maybe a photo wouldn’t have even been needed. But then again, for us racing fans, we would have been stripped of this great finish if it would have happened any other way. FGF Mathias not only earned a championship, but showed the heart of a champion in the process. If this turns out to the be the last Great American Greyhound Futurity run, what a heck of a way to go out. Congratulations to all the connections for FGF Mathias, including the entire Fulton family, trainer Stephen Ulrich and kennel owner Rodney Cooley. - ALL AMERICAN TEAM ANNOUNCED | National Greyhound
< Back ALL AMERICAN TEAM ANNOUNCED Jim Gartland Mar 3, 2020 Stake winner and Southland win leader, Salud Raindrop , has been named Captain of the 2019 All-America team, as announced today by the National Greyhound Association (NGA). The annual naming of the All-America team dates back to 1963. The program pays tribute to the top eight greyhounds nationally. Historically voted on by the member tracks of AGTOA, the award process was turned over to the NGA in 2019. Others named to this year’s squad are: LK's Crush N It (Derby Lane), JS Flamin Ace (Southland), MRL Full Boat (Southland), LR Iowa Choice (Southland), Revin Devon (Iowa Greyhound Park), Sarkazum (Southland) and Flying Givenchy (Derby Lane). This year’s second team is comprised of: Pat C News (bestbet Jax), Konomi (Southland), L's Griz (Wheeling), Dyenuhmite (Southland), Mac's Trudeaux (Tri-State), Chillaxification (Southland), JD Revelation (IGP-Naples) and Super C Azelle (Tri-State). First Team All Americans The only female to make this year's first team of All Americans is Salud Raindrop . She not only made the team she has also been named Captain of the 2019 squad. At one time or another during 2019, many people were referring to Salud Raindrop as "the best greyhound in the country". She ended the year as the win leader at Southland despite missing the last two months of racing due to injury she incurred in the finals of the Female Sprint Championship. She did, however, dominate the final of the Southland Derby on her way to 11 wins in a row. At various times during the meet she snapped off win streaks of nine, five, eleven, three and five on her way to capturing the Southland win title with a total of 36 victories in all. Her box break and early burst to the turn were her signature and she rarely got caught once in front. She won an unbelievable 76% of the races she started, finishing the year with a 47-36-3-3-2 record. 44 times on the pay sheet out of 47 starts; 93% in the money! The sleek black female is by Bella Infrared-Mega Whitney and is co-owned by Jeff Blair and Mike Montoya. She races for the Gloria Dorsey Kennel at Southland and is trained by Natalie Looper. A Derby Lane star is our next All American. LK's Crush N It had a phenomenal year to say the least. He made five stake finals, winning four of those including the $64,000 Sprint Classic. He finished 2nd in his other stake final. He put together numerous win streaks throughout the year on his way to winning 50 races, the most of any greyhound in North America. He was almost unstoppable at Derby finishing in the trifecta 61 times in 67 starts. Bred, raised and owned by John and Jill Lashmet of Colorado, Crush N It is a 2016 son of LK's Now R Never-LK's All In. JS Flamin Ace had to be considered as one of the premiere greyhounds in the country in 2019. Racing against the best Southland has to offer, Ace would qualify for 5 stake finals including the GAGF, Southland Derby, Male Sprint Championship, King & Queens and 2 for the Money. He would win the Male Sprint Championship on Festival of Stakes day and follow it up with a King & Queens victory. A July 2017 son of Superior Panama-CH Sweet Honey, Flamin Ace captured 28 wins in 2019, second most for the meet at Southland. His overall record was 58-28-9-5-7. He was raised in Abilene by Shannon Henry and was a $52,000 auction sale at the Fall meet in 2018. He is owned by Garth Bolton and Lester Raines and races for the Raines kennel. Congratulations to everyone associated with this great greyhound! The second oldest greyhound to make this year's team, MRL Full Boat broke in at Orange Park in 2018 and showed early on that he could be a force to be reckoned with. After struggling a bit in his early career, he was switched over to the 3/8ths course after just ten lifetime starts, winning 5 of his first 12 at the longer distance. He would then ship to Southland in late 2018. After a couple of sprint starts he moved back over to longer distances and picked up a couple wins before heading back over to sprints. This pattern would hold true for a while as the Boat proved his talents at all distances. He would eventually compete in three different distances making finals of stakes at both 5/16 and 3/8. All in all he would make 5 stake finals at Southland in 2019 while finishing in the money in 45 out of his 50 starts. Full Boat is an October 2016 son of CTW Pipe Down-MRL Goin Bye Bye and is owned by Lee Harrington's MRL Metals. LR Iowa Choice . This big male out of Top Of The Pile-Springisintheair broke in with a flair in March of 2019 winning seven of his first nine starts, the ninth being a first round win in qualifying for the Great American Greyhound Futurity. He would go on to make the consolation final of the futurity and then jump right into qualifying for the Southland Derby where he would make the finals after winning two of the four qualifying rounds. He would continue his winning ways leading up to qualifying for the Male Sprint Championship in the Festival of stakes. He would find trouble in the final but bounce back and continue picking up victories finishing the season with the third most wins for the Southland meet. Three stake finals and a record of 52-26-6-4-3 against the best are the credentials for the youngest of this year's All Americans, LR Iowa Choice. Congratulations to co-owners Mary Robinette and Karen Legg and their outstanding greyhound! Revin Devon . This young Iowa-bred is owned by David Ungs and Billy Galbreath. He burst on the Iowa Greyhound Park scene and quickly moved up into the grade A ranks. The April 2017 brindle son of U Too Pure Silk-Fire And Heat wound up capturing the IGP track win title with a 19 victories in 35 outings. He would go on to win the $200,000 Iowa Breeders Cup as well as the $30,000 Future Stars Stake. He also ran a nice second in the 3/8ths mile Dubuque Course Classic to Superior Tora. Devon would close out the season at Dubuque with another stake win in the Secretary's Choice Stake finishing off a great meet. He moved on to Gulf Greyhound Park at the end of the year and continued his winning ways there. The oldest member of this year's team is William O'Donnell's Sarkazum . This star was simply a machine, running at any and all distances offered at the Southland oval. In May he captured the Razorback Championship over the 660 yard course. He then ran a hard trying 2nd in the Super Marathon Championship as well as winning races over the 703 yard course. Sarkazum is a 2016 son of Shonn-Jennah and races for the Northshore Kennel at Southland. His record for the year was 51-14-15-5-9, an impressive 84% in the money clip. Here's to Sarkazum and the O'Donnell crew for this All American honor! Flying Givenchy . Givenchy broke in at Naples going from Maiden to A in straight starts. He would end up with fourteen starts at the South Florida track, winning twelve of those. From there it was on to Southland for the Great American Greyhound Futurity where he would run well enough to make the finals, but finish a disappointing seventh. He was then shipped to Derby Lane where he would win the T.L. Weaver Memorial, run third in the Husker Magic, finish 2nd in the Howl-O-Ween stake and garner 21 wins in 36 starts. Givenchy, a 2017 son of Barcelona Boss-Flying Blush compiled a record of 63-34-17-3-3 for the year at three different tracks, making 4 stake finals and finishing 7th in the nation in total wins. He is owned by Vince Berland. These eight will be honored with All-America plaques in ceremonies at the Greyhound Hall Of Fame Thursday night, Apr. 16, during the NGA Spring Meet in Abilene, Ks. - ROUND 3 OF 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY | National Greyhound
< Back ROUND 3 OF 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY Jan 21, 2020 Only three races left as the competition heats up in the 2020 edition of the Orange Park Derby. The best routers are still around, and the converted sprinters are making their cases as well. Loads of talent still in the mix as the 24 greyhounds head to post on money evening for the quarter finals. Let’s take a close look at the races and see if we can get the week started off on the right foot. Monday evening January 20th, 2020 – Round 3 of the Orange Park Derby Race 9 – Super C Addison is starting to figure out the distance and that is bad news for the rest of this field. Hot off an impressive win, she will thrive tonight as she is finally on the rail. UC Ricky Snickle won last time out too and has the early needed to see the lead again tonight. Holding on late will be his true hurdle to overcome. Pat C Jacob also got things righted last time out and might just have the best raw speed in the bunch. If he gets loose, watch out. WW Spending Time will contend early for sure with all the breaking ability but won’t be able to hand late with the closers. (2-7-4-3) Race 11 – Undefeated so far is RTSS Gonwitdawin. Posted up impressive back to back box to wire victors from outside post positions, more to come in this effort. No speed around here at the break and another wide box should equal a hat trick. Trying to take her down is the talented Fakeit To Makeit. With 5 quinielas in a row, including a pair of wins, she is no slouch, and if she hits the box, she might just upset the apple cart here. Don’t forget about the closers though. LK’s I Got this is a solid grade A that gets a good post and can challenge throughout, and BGR Woe Is Me is rising in the ranks, running hot in the rounds, and will come flying late to challenge. Race 14 – RPG Get You Back is the other undefeated greyhound in the stakes and looks to be the one to beat for the title. With 3 straight, and 5 wins in 6 races, she is the real deal. Out and gone early on is her motto, and tonight I just more of that happening. Trying to make her work for it will be Pat C Woozy. A huge winner in round 1, she found trouble in round 2 and finished out of the money. With a same post tonight, you don’t know just what you are going to get. If she clears early, it could be quite a race. WP’s Twisted Lady was hot heading into the rounds but has cooled off in the 2 efforts. Still in the money, but not breaking like she has in the past. If she can find that early foot, she too could throw her hat into the ring for the victory. Alcohol U Later is a closer over the distance and winning against the top tier might be too much to ask. Finding a spot in the money, well that is another. Look for her round out the superfecta tonight. (4-2-6-3) The semi-finals will run on Saturday evening January 25th at bestbet Jacksonville. Don’t miss out! Previous Next

- A THANK YOU FROM DON JENSEN | National Greyhound
< Back A THANK YOU FROM DON JENSEN Dec 28, 2020 Hello, It is hard to believe that greyhound racing has ended at Derby Lane after 95 years. I was fortunate to be asked to write a pari-mutuel column for the former St. Petersburg Times, beginning in 2004. Although my background was in thoroughbred racing – including a one-year stint as the publicity director at Charles Town Races in West Virginia – I welcomed the opportunity to learn and write about dog racing. My first column for the newspaper involving Derby Lane dogs came on Oct. 30, 2004, featuring a Floyd & Porter greyhound named MN’s Island Anne, who has just missed starting her career by going up the graded ladder undefeated until suffering a Grade A defeat. Trained by the late Cal Holland Jr., those first four wins turned out to be only half of the eight total victories that MN’s Island Anne would register during her lifetime from 49 races. Perhaps, it was fitting that I would begin writing on the Derby Lane (and Tampa Greyhound Track) dogs in that manner. My goal primarily was to spread the wealth of publicity wherever possible. In the past 17 years, I covered All-Americans, Rural Rube champions, Flashy Sir winners, stakes titlists and meet win champions. But when the opportunities arose, I got as much enjoyment to write about dogs and kennels that were not in the spotlight as much as others. I was fortunate to see the final race today at Derby Lane, more than 13 years after seeing the final race at Tampa Greyhound Track on Aug. 18, 2007. I want to thank EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU – kennel operators, trainers, handlers, greyhound owners and track personnel – for treating me respectfully in a way that I’ll never forget. Dealing with the media can be challenging, but I was brought up in the newspaper business with an old-school beliefs, and I always tried to maintain that throughout my coverage while showing respect to the person whom I was speaking with. I quickly became aware of how much care and effort you put into the greyhounds, which required your attention seven days a week on a yearly basis. My best moments, without a doubt, were covering you on stakes championship performances. Many dressed nicely, and the smiles and congratulations were contagious. But as I look back, the little things probably stand out to me just as much. I remember driving to Virginia from Florida one Christmas week when a kennel operator called to wish me Merry Christmas. Then one Saturday evening while dining at a Tampa restaurant, I received a call from another kennel operator who had won a rare kennel championship and wanted to thank me for writing about it. Of course, there were other calls to my residence from kennel personnel thanking me for writing on their athletes, emails that reflected the same thing, and of course, all of the camaraderie at the track. Except for reflecting on my first article, I prefer not to singularly mention any particular kennel-related personnel for fearing of overlooking anyone. But for all the articles I wrote, none would have been possible without your cooperation and trust that I would reflect your thoughts, and bring fair and unbiased coverage to your sport. There are different stages in life that we go through, and for nearly two decades, you became part of my life. Some of the individuals who I met 17 years ago are no longer with us, and I have not forgotten their contributions as well. As we all go into the next chapter of our respective lives, I want to thank you again for your cooperation and friendship that we developed through the years. I feel blessed to have added this chapter in my life, and it is one that I’ll always appreciate and never forget. My prayers are with all of you, and wishing that you find as much happiness as I have in this now-concluded chapter of my life. Again, thank you for letting me be part of your respective lives. Sincerely, Don Jensen Tampa Bay Times Previous Next
