- TWO AT THE TOP AT DERBY LANE | National Greyhound
< Back TWO AT THE TOP AT DERBY LANE Sep 14, 2020 The late Patsy Cline put Winchester, Va., on the map eight decades ago with her exceptional country music singing. TS Patsy Cline, a greyhound who was named after the legendary artist, hit all the right notes this past Saturday at Derby Lane. Her maiden-breaking, 10-length victory ignited a four-win evening performance for Abernathy kennel, launching the operation into a first-place tie with Everett Racing in the highly-competitive kennel standings at Derby Lane. Abernathy, which is owned by Jim and Kayruth Abernathy, tied Everett – each with 108 victories in the July-to-December meet. Abernathy was one of only two of the 14 kennels to record at least 10 wins during the previous week’s seven performances (Watson Racing led with 13 victories). Everett Racing, which held first place by itself the past week under kennel owner Kelly Everett and trainer Kelsie Gubbels, is gunning for its first kennel championship since winning three six-month meet crowns in a row in 2018-19. Abernathy has finished second in a kennel race three times since 2004, including a runner-up showing to Everett Racing in 2019. TS Patsy Cline’s win as the prohibitive 1-2 favorite was followed by victories from Craigie Zumba ($10.40 to win), Finlandia ($22.80) and JPRG Lone Star ($10). The four Abernathy 550-yard sprinters won by a combined 23-1/2 lengths. Patsy Cline, the artist, began singing in 1954 and died in a 1963 plane crash in Camden, Tenn., at age 30. A 1973 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Ms. Cline had hits like Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, She’s Got You, and Sweet Dreams. TS Patsy Cline, the greyhound, also has been a favorite among her fans. The 59-pound athlete began racing in July at Wheeling Island in West Virginia, where she made five schooling races before being shipped to Derby Lane. TS Patsy Cline’s only schooling race at Derby Lane came on Aug. 28, when she won in box-to-wire fashion by 12 lengths for owners Carl Tomblin and Steve Sarras. The 21-month-old daughter of Superior Panama and Ty Law has been the wagering favorite in all four official starts since. After finishing third in her career debut, TS Patsy Cline posted a pair of seconds before breaking her maiden on Saturday – clocking the 550-yard course in 31.53 seconds. Capabal kennel ranks third in the kennel standings with 106 victories. Defending champion Lester Raines and Nova are tied for fourth at 104. Derby Lane features seven 15-race performances weekly with Monday-through-Saturday matinees, and a Saturday evening card. Previous Next

- FALL MEET STILL ON TRACK | National Greyhound
< Back FALL MEET STILL ON TRACK Jim Gartland Sep 28, 2020 Despite a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in the Abilene area, the NGA fall meet is scheduled to go on as planned with pre-meet schooling beginning this Sunday, October 4. Some 10 new cases of corona virus popped up in the Dickinson County area over the last two weeks forcing the closure of schools in Abilene and nearby Chapman as well as several area businesses. No new cases have been noted in the last few days, however, and no new mandates have been put in place by the City or County (a proposed mask mandate was tabled by the City Council last week). While no new guidelines have been issued, Abilene remains under some restrictions and we would encourage anyone planning on attending the meet to be prepared see "masks required" areas as well as the need to practice social distancing at certain indoor functions (Hall of Fame, etc.). On a lighter note, this meet will see the return of the Hall of Fame Golf Tournament. The tourney is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at 10:00 AM and will be held at the old Abilene Country Club. Entry fee for the tournament is $50 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, cart and lunch at the course. If you are interested in playing, please let someone in the NGA office know as soon as possible so that we can make the proper arrangements with the course. It has been a lot of years since we've had a golf tourney and we would like to make this a big success for what will likely be that last organized NGA tourney as well as to raise some funds for the Hall of Fame! First round racing action takes place on Monday, October 12 with the finals on Thursday. The fall Auction will be held at the Hall of Fame on Friday at 9:00 AM. There will be two nights of inductions at the Hall of Fame; Tuesday night we will have regular HOF inductions with Wayne Strong and Djays Octane receiving the honors. Thursday night will be the presentation of the All American, Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards which were held over from the spring meet. Looking forward to seeing you all! Previous Next

- Year in Review: Highlights from Wheeling’s 2023 racing season | National Greyhound
< Back Year in Review: Highlights from Wheeling’s 2023 racing season Stan Pawloski Jan 2, 2024 In August of 1976, greyhounds chased “Spunky” around the track at Wheeling Island for the very first time as greyhound racing was launched in the Friendly City. Last year marked 47 years of Wheeling greyhound racing and fans can expect another thrilling, fun-filled racing season and more excitement in 2024. Although no open stake races were held in 2023, there were plenty of highlights on the track. Four greyhounds generated excitement by winning six straight races, one sprinter climbed the ladder to Grade AA undefeated, two West Virginia-bred stake events were contested, several greyhounds battled throughout the year for top win honors and several youngsters broke their Maiden and look like future stars. Top greyhound honors went to a pair of sprinters – Blanchard Kennel’s Artex Pumbaa and Charter Kennel’s JSP Rayzendacash, as both posted 22 victories. Next in line were 2022 track win champ Florentine (Steve Sarras Kennel) and Tenacity (Blanchard Kennel) with 21 wins each. The Blanchard Kennel, trained by Chris Maynard, captured the 2023 kennel championship with 640 wins after taking runner up honors to the Lester Raines Kennel the last three years. The Blanchard Kennel won their first Wheeling kennel crown in 2019. The 640 wins by the Blanchard Kennel in 2023 is the most at Wheeling since the ZEZ Kennel posted 645 wins in 1999 and 659 victories in 2000. In the history of Wheeling racing, only 29 greyhounds had moved up the ladder straight to Grade AA after winning their Maiden debut. Now there’s 30 as Hell Bent accomplished the feat last year. The youngster won his first Maiden race in early June before capturing Grades D, C, B and A in successive starts. An August 2021 greyhound out of Konomi-Liz Cambage, Hell Bent races out of the Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel, trained by Jill Spicer and owned by David Strong. The Wheeling record for most victories in a row to start a career is 12 by Kiowa Sweet Trey in 2001. The sprint star won Maiden, Grades D, C, B, A and seven in Grade AA. In the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Championship in late September, CG’s Honesty (Code Red Kennel) rocketed out to the early lead and never looked back in romping to a 7-length victory. Littermate CG’s Sun Storm (Code Red Kennel) took runner up honors while CET Mist (Steve Sarras Kennel) rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final finish were Wild Blue Bee (Xtrem Hess Racing), fourth; Wild Chomp Dude (Xtrem Hess Racing), fifth; Arroyo Duchess (Code Red), sixth; CG’s Nail Biter (Code Red), seventh; and Arroyo Deon (Code Red), eighth. In the $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone (3/8th) Championship in October, Wild Blue Bee bided his time behind the frontrunners early in the race before storming home on the rail to edge out CET Dirty Skinny (Steve Sarras Kennel) by half a length at the wire. Pacesetter CET Marlin (Imark Kennel) settled for third. Completing the final order of finish were CET Dirty Toodls (Steve Sarras Kennel), fourth; TS Woody (Steve Sarras Kennel), fifth; Wild Chomp Dude (Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel), sixth; CET Zink (Imark Kennel), seventh; and JAS Strait Aces (Patriot/Taplin Kennel), eighth. The longest winning streak last year was six in a row by four greyhounds – Artex Pumbaa, JSP Hush Money, FGF Duke and CET Dirty Dan (streak started in December 2022 and extended into January 2023). Four other greyhounds won five straight races – Smile N Mean It, Hell Bent, AMF Gotta Go and Tenacity. Several greyhounds captured four straight victories – Artex Pumbaa, Ark RB Heyward, Artex Kusapin, Arkans Pride, Florentine, FF Leroy Brown, Arma Guiness, JSP Rayzendacash, GLS Ondemand, FF Evel Knievel, FF Evolution and FF Vespa. Wheeling will host two West Virginia-bred stakes races again in 2024, the Juvenile and the Panhandle Championship. Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel’s Wild Blue Bee captured the $65,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Keystone Championship in October at Wheeling Island. With the champion in the winner’s circle are, from left, Amy McLaughlin, Emily McLaughlin, Trinity LaCuesta, Rhea LaCuesta, racing secretary Chris Yahn, racing manager Jack Davis, Wild Blue Bee owner Randy Crabtree, Cindy Kovalski, lead out Mecca Davis and trainer Jill Spicer.
