  • PBKC PRESENTS ROUND 1 ACTION OF THE $50,000 HE'S MY MAN CLASSIC | National Greyhound

< Back PBKC PRESENTS ROUND 1 ACTION OF THE $50,000 HE'S MY MAN CLASSIC Jan 6, 2020 West Palm Beach, Fl. – Round one qualifying action for what should be a historic $50,000 He’s My Man Classic gets underway Wednesday afternoon, January 8, at Palm Beach Kennel Club. The same 56 Greyhounds will return to compete in round two, Saturday afternoon, January 11. Following the second round, two dozen entries will be return to their respective Grade class, with only the top 32 remaining for the third round being contested Wednesday afternoon, January 15. The top 16-point earners from the third round will move on to the semifinals on Sunday afternoon, January 19. The final eight will comprise the field for the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic which will be run Saturday afternoon, January 25. Qualifying will be contested in races 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 15. Some fan favorites for the first round of qualifying include: Race 4 appears to belong to the inside-posted racers, the strong finishers #1Pat C Inferno (Flying Fired – Pat C Pop In, Koppe, Staats & Collins) and #2 Arkansbdchikhik s (Golden Squire – Arkans BD Cheeks, Royal Racing Team) along with the early speedster #3 Barts Mandy More (KC And All – Barts Midniterun, James Douglas) and the strong first-turn rusher #4 Heremecoming (KC And All – Tango Tessa, Janie Carroll). Race 6 : The probable post-time favorite looks to be the well-posted #1 Barts These Eyes (Barcelona Boss – B’s That’s My Jam, James Douglas). This track veteran will be going for her third-consecutive victory. Race 8 : Several qualifiers in this event have a shot at pulling off the victory, including the well-posted #1 Superior Roza (Gable Sour Cream – Superior Rawlins, B & B Racing) and the two early speedsters #5 I Can Do Badboy (Offthebrakedrake – Pippi, D. Q. William) and the youngster #8 Barts Timetoplay (KC And All – Barts Cherrypie, James Douglas). Race 10 : The way this qualifier will play out depends on who will be on the lead entering the backstretch. It could be #1 Mister Red Rader (Flying Titanium – Rip N Runnin, B & B Racing), #5 Oshkosh Noisy (Oshkosh Lamont – Oshkosh Vani, James Douglas) or #7 Grean Street (Flying Coal City – Kebo Cutler, Rader Racing). Also keep an eye out for the strong closer, #2 Its Hammer Time (Right Connection – Blondbombshell, Janie Carroll). Race 12 : This is a tough one. One could make a case for almost every Greyhound in this race! Good luck! Race 14 : The most likely post time favorite should be #8 Shine N Shut Up (Need My Moneynow – Diamond Tears, D. Q. Williams). He drew the best post and should be able to clear the first turn on top. Race 15 : Three entries will be sharing the majority of the win pool due to great racing positions, including a finalist in the recently run $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity, #1 RF Oka (Chasmo’s Dutch – Superior Megryan, B & B Racing), the consistent athlete #2 JS Mane Event (KC And All – TY Kay Event, Rader Racing) and the extremely well-placed #8 Getting The Money (Offthebrakedrake – Goodluck Topaz, D. Q. Williams), who will be going for his third straight win. The $50,000 He’s My Man Classic is the first event in Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $150,000 “Big 3" Stakes series, which includes the $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby (Saturday afternoon, February 29) and the $50,000 Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational (Saturday afternoon, March 14). The Classic is named for Palm Beach Kennel Club racing legend and the track’s first multimedia sensation He’s My Man and dedicated to the man who raised and trained “Roscoe”, Bill Pappas. • $18,000 1925 HISTORICAL INAUGURAL CHAMPIONSHIP | National Greyhound

< Back $18,000 1925 HISTORICAL INAUGURAL CHAMPIONSHIP Jan 6, 2020 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. That saying used to be attached to LK’s Santorini . . . until Saturday night. The 33-month-old daughter of LK’s Vespar and LK’s Chardonnay, who often has taken a back seat to standout Lashmet kennelmate LK’s Crush N It, had the stage all to herself in the $18,000 1925 Historical Inaugural at Derby Lane. LK’s Santorini stormed out of the starting box on a breezy night in the track’s oldest stakes race, and scored a box-to-wire, two-length victory for her first career title. The Inaugural, the first of 12 stakes races scheduled in 2020 at Derby Lane, paid $7,700 to the winner. “I’m happy,’’ Lashmet kennel manager and trainer Ken Deacon said. “She can run, but she’s always played second fiddle to the big dog (LK’s Crush N It). “When she beat the 2 (LK’s Crush N It) down to the turn, that’s probably the first time in her life that she’s ever beaten him. . . . I’m sure they’ve schooled together before.’’ LK’s Santorini, bred by Derby Lane kennel owners John and Jill Lashmet of Eaton, Colo., drew box 3. Inside of her were LK’s Crush N It and Shoot The Breeze, the Floyd kennel greyhound who had won his past four races. When the starting box opened, LK’s Santorini sped ahead of LK’s Crush N It into the first turn. She opened up a four-length lead after the first race call, and wasn’t challenged as LK’s Crush N It gave way on the final turn to a surging FGF Pass You By of Watson Racing kennel. LK’s Santorini, the fourth wagering choice at 6-1, clocked the 550-yard course in 30.57 seconds. She paid $14.40 to win and raised her lifetime earnings to more than $32,000. FGF Pass You By, the longest shot at 43-1, overcame a last-place start to take second – three lengths in front of Shoot The Breeze. LK’s Crush N It, the defending Inaugural champion and 8-5 race favorite, faded to fourth. The remainder order of finish: Where U Want Me (Bartley Corporation), Rich N Famous (Farmer Racing), Flying Zigzag (Everett Racing) and BD Wells (Everett Racing). LK’s Crush N It earned $1,540 with his fourth-place showing, raising his career earnings above the $100,000 plateau. “That’s great,’’ Deacon said. “He’s the best dog I’ve ever had.’’ LK’s Santorini, who advanced to the 95-year-old Inaugural championship event with a second-place finish in qualifying, entered the finale on a nine-race losing streak – the longest of her 88-race career – despite finishing in the money eight times with a top-four finish. The Inaugural represented LK’s Santorini’s seventh stakes appearance, and fifth consecutive time of reaching the title race. Her previous best stakes finish was a fourth in the $50,000 Husker Magic Fall Sprint on Sept. 28. “She’s been in several other (stakes finals) and always broke bad,’’ Deacon said. “(Saturday), she flew out of the box. She beat the big dog (LK’s Crush N It) to the turn, and I said, ‘Oh, yeah!’ “I thought they were going to tie up together (on the turn) and get in trouble. But as it turned out, she ran a heck of a race.’’ It was the 35th lifetime victory for LK’s Santorini, who has led at every race call in 29 of her wins. Her clocking was the fastest among 207 greyhounds that competed in 26 races on the 550-course track throughout the day’s matinee-evening doubleheader. “I knew (the surface) was fast, because of the rain we had (earlier in the day),’’ Deacon said. “Usually in these races, the dog that goes to the lead wins 95 percent of the time. “I really liked the 1 dog (Shoot The Breeze). He’s going to be a monster pup, and he ran Crush N It down the last time out (in the qualifier). He had a little bit of trouble, and still ran a good race.’’ Randy Floyd, whose kennel handles Shoot The Breeze, said, “I guess it wasn’t meant to be.’’ Sparked by FGF Pass You By’s second-place finish at high odds, the $2 trifecta of 3-7-1 paid $1,300.40, and the $1 superfecta of 3-7-1-4 returned $2,665.50. Derby Lane’s next stakes race is the $64,000 Sprint Classic on Feb. 15-29. Previous Next

  • GREYHOUNDS RACE INTO YOUR HEART IN NO TIME FLAT | National Greyhound

< Back GREYHOUNDS RACE INTO YOUR HEART IN NO TIME FLAT Stan Pawloski Feb 10, 2020 On the racetrack, greyhounds are a picture of beauty, grace, determination, speed – doing what they are born to do and love to do – run. Off the track in retirement, they make exceptional pets – easy to fall in love with in a heartbeat. They are quiet, well-mannered, affectionate, very easy to live with and provide great companionship. Since 2010, the Wheeling Island Greyhound Adoption Center has facilitated in the adoption of more than 2,700 greyhounds. The majority are from Wheeling Island with others from Tri-State Greyhound Park, West Virginia breeding farms and out-of-state transfers. “Greyhounds make wonderful pets and, more often than not, transition to retired life with ease. They can be anywhere on the continuum from a lazy couch potato to service, mobility or agility dogs. As typical soft dogs who have been surrounded by humans their entire life, greyhounds aim to please,” Deb Reed, Wheeling Island adoption coordinator, said. “They have as many different personalities as there are shades of greyhounds – from shyness to extreme confidence. These aren’t cookie cutter personality dogs and in all my years of working with greyhounds, I have yet to find two that are the same.” Reed has been around greyhounds for 20 years, first working in the family racing kennel at age 16. “Greyhound racing is the fulfillment of a life-long passion. My step-father, my husband and I are licensed trainers. I have tried to find other employment at times, but this is my place,” Reed noted. “Greyhounds, from raising to racing to retirement, are my life. My employment in the adoption center allows me to continue the kennel care to ensure these athletes receive and retire to the best homes possible.” The process of adopting a greyhound at Wheeling Island involves several steps, including an application form, telephone interview and home visit. The online form can be found at: https://www.wheelinggreyhoundpets.org/adopt-a-greyhound/application-form/#top . “Applicants must provide three references as well as a veterinarian. The adoption fee is $300, which covers the cost of spay/neuter, update on any shots and blood testing,” Reed said. “While the greyhounds are at the adoption kennel, they receive regular deworming, flea and tick medication.” The onsite adoption kennel has space for 48 greyhounds and is usually at full capacity, Reed said. “We don’t have enough greyhounds to meet the adoption demand. While we will adopt to local individuals in the Wheeling area who meet the requirements, most of our greyhounds go to responsible adoption groups we work with,” Reed said. “Our youngest greyhound adopted was 3 months old and our oldest may have been close to 10 years old.” The Wheeling Island Greyhound Adoption Center holds weekly meet and greet sessions on the first floor of the racetrack. The sessions are held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. “The public is welcome to come and meet real retired racing greyhounds,” Reed said. “We also provide education targeting the misinformation the public may have heard from anti-racing groups.” Monetary donations in any amount are greatly appreciated. Checks can be made payable to WIGAC and mailed to: WIGAC P.O. Box 6314 Wheeling, WV 26003 Donations are entirely used for the adoption of greyhounds at WIGAC, including necessary veterinary care to prepare them for placement in forever homes. Previous Next
