< Back GF LA DUENA CAPTAINS 2019 ALL-WHEELING TEAM Stan Pawloski Feb 3, 2020 Wheeling Island win champion GF La Duena has been selected captain of the 2019 all-Wheeling team. The Patriot/Taplin Kennel super sprint star, owned by Tom Salem and trained by Joe Otto, won 32 races last year – the most by a Wheeling Island greyhound since Slatex Striker posted 34 victories in 2003. GF La Duena is the first 330-yard racer in Wheeling history to capture the track win championship. GF La Duena came to Wheeling Island in June 2018 after opening her career at Tri-State Greyhound Park. She was an easy choice to head the 10-greyhound team. The Blanchard Kennel had three all-Wheeling honorees – L’s Griz, L’s Luv It and High Wire Willy. Both L’s Griz and L’s Luv It are repeat selections from the 2018 team. Rounding out the 2019 all-Wheeling team are JS Drinkmepretty, Lester Raines Kennel; DS Bubbles, Xtrem Hess Racing Kennel; JSK Roulette, Jacobs Racing Kennel; Mac’s Glightfoot, A Ray Kennel; WW’s Chewbacca, Wayne Ward Kennel; and Imark Grande, Imark Kennel. L’S GRIZ (54-25-15-6-2) – second in wins, all in AA; had a 4-race and 3-race win streak; finalist Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes; 88 percent superfecta mark; 85 percent trifecta mark; 5 wins and 6 seconds in an 11-race stretch; 5 wins and 4 seconds in another 9-race stretch. L’S LUV IT (59-19-11-8-7) – tied for third in wins, all but one in AA; had a 3-race win streak; fourth Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes; 76 percent superfecta mark; 64 percent trifecta finish. JSK ROULETTE (38-17-8-4-1) – tied for seventh in wins, all but one in Grade AA; had three 3-race win streaks; 79 percent superfecta mark; 76 percent trifecta finish. MAC’S GLIGHTFOOT (31-16-6-2-4) – most wins by a 3/8th racer, 13 in Grade AA or TAA; had a 7-race and 6-race win streak; 90 percent superfecta finish; 77 percent trifecta mark; won 51 percent of his races. WW’S CHEWBACCA (22-9-3-3-2) – captured Mountaineer Classic Sprint Stakes; 77 percent superfecta finish; 68 percent trifecta mark. < Back CET DIRTY DILLY REPEATS IN RURAL RUBE, FGF DAVYCROCKETT SELECTED FOR FLASHY SIR IN 2022 AWARDS Jim Gartland Feb 21, 2023 A West Virginia speedster and a Southland distance star have been chosen as recipient's of the NGA’s annual Awards; CET Dirty Dilly returns as the repeat winner of the Rural Rube and Southland distance star, FGF Davycrocket t has captured the Flashy Sir. With no major stakes scheduled in 2022, the NGA awards took on a different look and voting method but, no doubt, the two winners were obvious selections. A 2018 daughter of SH Avatar-CET Dirty Nicki , CET Dirty Dilly continued right where she left off in 2021, tearing up the competition at Tri State on her way to a North American leading 40 wins on the year. Three different times during the season, she would go on seven race win streaks and would end the year on December 30th with an impressive ten length romp. She would finish out of the trifecta only once in all of her 48 starts finishing 7th in a race back in October where she encountered early trouble. She was also voted Captain of the All American team by the NGA. Owned and raced by Carl Tomblin II, Dilly was, obviously, the most consistent sprinter in the land over the past year. She won her first start in January and would win 39 more times including that last start in December. Dilly would finish the year with a 48-40-3-4-0 record, missing the pay sheet only once the entire year! A much deserved award for this fabulous sprinter. Congratulations to Carl Tomblin and all the connections of CET Dirty Dilly . FGF Davycrockett was a unanimous choice for the Flashy Sir award finishing the year as the win and money leader at Southland running strictly distance races. Crockett is a July 2019 son of Trent Lee-FGF Jamboree and was a Southland distance star for the Charter Kennel. Racing exclusively at 660 and 703 yards, Crockett was equally tough at either distance. His first win of the year came in January at 703 yards and his last at 660 yards in December. In between he would miss the pay sheet only five times over the course of the year. He finished with a 45-18-9-5-8 record and earned well over $300,000 for his efforts. Crockett , who was also named to the 2022 All American team, was raised and is owned by Kevin Fulton. Congratulations to FGF Davycrockett and all his connections! The 52nd Annual NGA Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards will be presented at the awards ceremonies program at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Thursday night, April 27, during the NGA's Spring Meet. < Back WVGOBA JUVENILE KICKS OFF AT WHEELING ISLAND Stan Pawloski Sep 14, 2020 A long shot and two favorites pocketed first round victories as the $35,000 West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Stakes kicked off Friday afternoon at Wheeling Island. Registering opening round victories were Patriot/Taplin Kennel’s Coach Oh Boy, a 16-1 shot, Lester Raines Kennel’s Baby Face Nelson and Abrahamson Kennel’s Go On Horse. Each accumulated 15 points to top the leader board heading into the Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 16, second round. The semifinals will be held on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 20. The juvenile championship final is scheduled for Saturday matinee, Sept. 26. Following are capsule looks at the three first round races: Coach Oh Boy closed in the stretch to post a 1 ½-length victory in 30.79. CET Sophia was second while Mac’s Tayloranne rounded out the trifecta ticket. Baby Face Nelson jumped out to an early lead and was never headed in winning by 1 ½ lengths in 30.25. CET Abercrombie was second while CET Ozzy settled for third. Go On Horse roared out to a big early lead and was never challenged in romping to a 5 ½-length win in 30.25. CET Dirty Dilly closed in the stretch for second with Mac’s Blackbird third. < Back DECO COLT GUN SELDOM MISFIRES Aug 24, 2020 Soon after the starting box opens, Deco Colt Gun usually has his work cut out. “He doesn’t get the break from the box, and he doesn’t have the rush to the turn like he used to,’’ Nova kennel manager and trainer Missy Kubitz said. “But once he gets around the turn and gets out, he drives hard.’’ Deco Colt Gun doesn’t shoot blanks very often. He is competitive, confident and consistent. For the past two years, the 550-yard specialist has been among the best Derby Lane has to offer. Deco Colt Gun is a lifetime winner of half his races (43 victories from 86 starts), and possesses an in-the-money record of 86 percent with finishes of fourth place or better. “He hasn’t dropped out of Grade A, and he’s very competitive,’’ Kubitz said. The 73-pound sprinter won his first four races this month before finishing third this past Saturday. Deco Colt Gun showed ability in his first career race at Gulf Greyhound Park in La Marque, Texas, where he has been twice before returning each time to Derby Lane. He broke first on that January 2019 day and led all the way in the 550-yard race for a 2-1/2-length victory at 9-1 odds. That was only one of 16 times that Deco Colt Gun has left the starting box first among his rivals. Excelling at Derby Lane is what the David Hays-owned greyhound does best. Forty-one of his lifetime victories have been at the Florida West Coast track, including 38 at either Grade A or against stakes competition. Deco Colt Gun, a 3-year-old son of Deco Glen Lee and Tiger Girl, also has reached the finals in three of four stakes appearances - all in 2019. He was third in the $8,000 T.L. Weaver Memorial Challenge, sixth in the $50,000 Husker Magic Fall Sprint, and seventh in the $10,000 Howl-O-Ween. In each stakes sprint, Deco Colt Gun was defeated by an All-America first-team selection: LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel (twice) and Flying Givenchy of Everett Racing kennel. His career-best clocking on Derby Lane’s 550-yard course is 30.23 seconds in May 2019. Deco Colt Gun’s resume includes a pair of five-race win streaks and three four-race win streaks. “He’s a good boy and he loves to race,’’ Kubitz said. “He’s changed in the kennel, too. “He used to be real quiet and never said a peep . . . . You didn’t even know he was there. Now, since we’ve been shut down (by the coronavirus pandemic from March 20 to May 7) and started racing again, he’s ripping up his rug and chewing on the water can. “He’s a mess now. I think it’s because he got cabin fever. He’s so glad to be back racing.’’ The success of Deco Colt Gun and other Nova athletes has kennel owner Hans Limmer of St. Petersburg and son Peter Limmer of Rosebud, Texas, in contention for a kennel meet championship. Entering this week, Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 80 victories - trailing reigning titlist Lester Raines (84) and Capabal (83). Nova’s last title came in the July-to-December meet in 2016. Nova is the meet leader in Grade A wins by a 35-18 margin over Lashmet kennel. “I win a lot of races on the love that I have for (the dogs),’’ Kubitz said. “I show up and (the dogs) give it back to me. I’ve always thought that I win a lot of races with the love. “Hans and Peter are real happy with how the dogs are performing. Peter laughs and jokes about me being the Queen of the (Grade) A wins, and the King of the (Grade) B wins, because when we first opened back up (from the pandemic), I was winning all the B’s and then of course, the dogs go to A and they’re winning.’’ Previous Next

< Back LESTER RAINES WINS 2020 WHEELING KENNEL CHAMPIONSHIP Stan Pawloski Jan 28, 2021 n 2018, Lester Raines captured the kennel championship on the final night of the racing season at Wheeling Island – edging the Blanchard Kennel by two victories. After a runner up finish to Blanchard in 2019, the Lester Raines Kennel ruled as king again last year – taking charge after a 3-month shutdown due to the coronavirus-19 pandemic closed the racetrack from mid-March until early June. Once on top, the Joel Roden-trained kennel never looked back. Lester Raines posted 426 victories last year, easily outdistancing runner up Blanchard (389) and Jacobs Racing (383). For Roden, 2020 marked his third championship with Lester Raines – following up crowns in 2016 and 2018. The kennel previously won Wheeling titles in 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1996. The thrill of the competition at Wheeling Island still fuels Roden. “Every year our goal as a kennel is to do as well as we possibly can, day-by-day, so each championship is special and means a lot. I still love doing what I do and hope I am doing it for a lot longer,” Roden said. “My parents were in the business, so I grew up with it and very proud of that. We get into the business for the competition – that’s what it’s all about.” Next in line behind Lester Raines (426), Blanchard (389) and Jacobs Racing (383) in the final 2020 standings were Patriot/Taplin (335), Charter (315), Xtrem Hess Racing (311), A Ray (301), Imark (294), Steve Sarras (292), Abrahamson (285), Brad Boeckenstedt (285), Wayne Ward (264) and Rangel (179). Lester Raines was locked in a tight race atop the kennel standings early in the 2020 racing season when the state ordered the closure of the track March 16. In the next 12 weeks the track was idle for live racing, but the greyhounds participated in schooling sessions on the island surface three days every week. “Although we were shut down, it was still a lot of work schooling the greyhounds every week. I think the closing actually helped our kennel,” Roden noted. “We had a lot of young pups and the shutdown gave them some time to mature and get acclimated to the racetrack.” Pacing the Lester Raines’ attack last year were Craigie Pirate with 15 victories and JS Drinkmepretty with 12 wins. Two other sprinters reached double figures in victories – Craigie Deuce with 11 and RS Perfectionist with 10. “Craigie Pirate was one of our pups helped by the shutdown. He learned how to run the racetrack while schooling,” Roden said. “Drinkmepretty is a little warrior, a little beast.” Checking in with nine victories apiece were JS Wanna Bee, JS Fine Toon and Rooftop Blondish. Recording eight wins each were CTW Cant Stop It, K One More Thing, KBF Country Gal, Kelsos Rasta Man, SNL Firebird, Super C Kix and ZB Tremonti. “We didn’t have a lot of superstars last year, but we had a kennel full of consistent, solid greyhounds,” Roden said. “It was a mix of young pups and veteran greyhounds that contributed throughout the year.” Roden credited his Wheeling crew – Julie Roden, Amanda McCardle, Kenneth Kelly and Dean Ellis – for playing a key role in the kennel’s success in 2020. “We got a combined effort from our team, Lester Raines, the greyhounds and our lease customers,” Roden said. As for 2021, Roden expects the competition to be as keen as ever with greyhounds coming in from other racetracks. “It’ll be a challenge again,” Roden said. In addition to having the most wins in 2020, Lester Raines garnered the most seconds (396) while Blanchard was tops in thirds (416). Lester Raines was the leader in win percentage with 16 percent followed by Jacobs Racing with 14 percent and Blanchard with 13 percent. Lester Raines led all kennels with a 45 percent trifecta mark. Jacobs Racing was next with 41 percent while Blanchard and Wayne Ward followed with 40 percent each. Previous Next
