  • JS FLAMIN ACE AND FLYING ZULU SELECTED FOR TOP NGA AWARDS IN SHORTENED RACE YEAR | National Greyhound

< Back JS FLAMIN ACE AND FLYING ZULU SELECTED FOR TOP NGA AWARDS IN SHORTENED RACE YEAR Jim Gartland Mar 12, 2021 Two Southland stars have picked up the NGA’s annual Awards; JS Flamin Ace winning the 50th Annual NGA Rural Rube Award as the nation’s top sprinter for 2020, and Flying Zulu capturing the Flashy Sir Award as the best distance greyhound in the land. Flamin Ace finished 2nd in this same vote last year, but edged out LK's Crush N It in this year's contest. Voting for the Rural Rube was a bit more lopsided with Flying Zulu receiving nearly 40% of the total vote. A 2017 son of Superior Panama-CH Sweet Honey raised on the Henry farm in Solomon, Kansas, Flamin Ace had been "destined for greatness" since being purchased as a high dollar sale at the NGA auction in 2018. He has lived up to the billing and has been considered one of the best sprinters in the land since first hitting the oval late in 2018. Since breaking in and reaching AA at Southland in 2019, he hasn't dropped out of the top grade. In his 32 starts at Southland in 2020 he never went off at odds of more than 2 to 1 highlighting his talent via the betting public. He was also voted as Captain of the All American team by the NGA. Owned by Garth Brooks and Lester Raines and racing for the Monte Hoopes trained, Raines Kennel, Ace started the year off with a bang winning five of his first nine starts coming back from a layoff due to a slight injury. He would go on to hit the pay sheet in nine of his next ten starts, five of those being wins including a victory in the $85,000 Southland Derby. He would win five of his next six including four qualifying rounds of the Male Sprint Championship. Racing luck, or maybe bad luck, got the best of him in the finals however, running into much early trouble and finishing seventh. He would grab two more wins before the year was out including a dominating ten length win in November before another minor injury sidelined him for the rest of the year. His steady and consistent style, while always racing against the best, makes Flamin Ace the champion he is. He finished the year with a 32-16-6-2-3 record; an 84% in the money clip! A much deserved award for this fabulous sprinter. Congratulations to Garth, Lester, Monte, and all the connections of JS Flamin Ace. Runner-up in the Rural Rube voting was John and Jill Lashmet's LK's Crush N It. This son of LK's Now R Never-LK's All In picked up two more stake victories in 2020 and finished the year with 29 wins. He captured the Derby Lane Sprint and Husker Magic stakes and won his final race of the year shortly after turning four years old which just happened to be his 93rd win in his 153 lifetime starts. Others high in the voting for the Rural Rube were William O'Donnell's Chillaxification, and Janice Abrahamson's CG's Penny Shoe. Voting was not as close for the top spot in the Flashy Sir contest. Only two greyhounds received double digit votes and were separated by a total of eight votes in the end. Flying Zulu won out over Rasta with FGF Avenger, and Slatex Beretta further back. Flying Zulu is a red brindle son out of Barcelona Boss-Classy Senza . He is the epitome of a distance star as he ran only one official race less than 660 yards in 2020. He won races at both 660 and 703 yards running against Southland's best and was named to the NGA's All American team. After spending time at four different tracks over the previous year, Zulu found his way to Southland in January of 2020 proceeded to win his first two starts in Memphis by a combined 16-1/2 lengths! He would continue his winning ways, mostly at 660 yards but also doing damage at 703 when those starts came his way. He could come from behind, but was even more impressive on the lead, often drawing away by large margins. He would win three out of four qualifying rounds in the Razorback Classic before finishing a hard fought fourth in the final. From there he would move over to 703 yards and promptly win seven in a row including a five and a half length romp in the Marathon Stake during the Festival of Stakes program in October. He would only get one more win before the year was out but battled in every race switching back in forth over the distance courses. He would finish 2020 as the win leader at Southland with an overall record of 38-19-5-2-5 A classic distance star and another local Abilene product, he is owned by Vince Berland and raced for the Kelly Everett trained Bussman-Balakis Kennel at Southland. Congratulations to all his connections! The 50th Annual NGA Rural Rube and Flashy Sir awards will be presented at the awards ceremonies program at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Thursday night, April 22, during the NGA's Spring Meet. • DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE | National Greyhound

< Back DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE Jul 27, 2020 Since 2004, the Abernathy brand has failed to appear on the proverbial kennel championship trophy at Derby Lane. Kennel owners Jim and Kayruth Abernathy came close three times during those 27 meets – finishing second three times (2019, 2015, 2014). As Derby Lane’s July-to-December meet winds down its first month this week, the Abernathys have put themselves in position to make history. Entering Monday’s 15-race performance, Abernathy kennel parlayed a big week to move into second place in the win standings. After recording a meet-tying 16 victories in the previous week, Abernathy trails only reigning champion Lester Raines, 50-42, in the win race. Abernathy and Lester Raines are the only kennels to collect 16 wins so far in a calendar week during the meet. Lester Raines won 16 races on July 6-11. Abernathy and Capabal were the lone kennels to notch at least one victory on all seven performances. Abernathy ended the week the way it started: getting four wins on the first and final cards. Six of Abernathy’s winners paid double-digits to win, including the $31.40 returned by Grade A athlete Charlotte York on Wednesday. That victory represented the first career Grade A win by Charlotte York from 61 starts. The 2-1/2-year old daughter of Pat C Clement and Krazy Kara was the longest shot on the board at 14-1 odds in the 550-yard race. She won in box-to-wire fashion by 2-1/2 lengths in 31.08 seconds for owner Steve Sarras. Abernathy’s 16 winners produced an average payout of $10.20 for a $2 win ticket. Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 39 victories, followed by Capabal at 38, and Everett Racing at 37. Derby Lane features seven weekly performances with matinee racing Monday through Saturday, and a Saturday evening card. Previous Next

  • ROUND 1 - 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY | National Greyhound

< Back ROUND 1 - 2020 ORANGE PARK DERBY Jan 13, 2020 Its time to kick off the stakes racing season in 2020 with the Orange Park Derby. The best greyhounds at the racetrack will battle in head to head competition over the next two weekends for a chance at the cash and the crown on Saturday evening February 1st at bestbet Jacksonville. A ton of converted sprinters are amongst the ranks and we will soon see if they are up to the added distance. The 660 mainstays are also here, so who will come out on top in round 1? Let’s take a closer look. Round 1 of 2020 Orange Park Derby – Monday evening January 13th, 2020 Race 7 – Easy choice here as the solid grade A router is Fakeit To Makeit. A clear class edge top notch winner over 660 will get to take once several newcomers and other lower grade 660 racers. Posted well, out and gone and holding on to win. Ww Annie Kay is switching to 660 and might be able to compete early. A solid breaking grade A, she might be able to hang in early, don’t know if she can run this far. UC Ricky Snickle can close late over the distance and will make his presence know, and don’t forget about TMC’s Makinmoney. Dad Seldom Told was the winner of this race a few years ago. (3-7-8-6) Race 9 – Go with the hot hand here. WP’s Twistedlady has won 3 of her last 4 starts and hasn’t missed the quiniela in any of those efforts. She has good early speed and is determined late. Bred to run this far, dad Seldom Told was an OPD winner in the past. Pat C Woozy can really let things fly when he gets loose early, but he must break to impress here. The most is good, and late he will come flying to challenge. Other routers I Dont Care could press throughout from a great post, and the Thanksgiving Marathon Champ, Baby Stop Crying, is rested well and could threaten from off the pace late. (7-4-3-6) Race 10 – Pre-Race favorite RPG Get You Back might just be the one to beat in this whole stake race. Winning 5 of the last 6 races, she is a force over this distance. From the outside post, she will be unabated to the lead and should dominate in this effort. Super C Addison might be new to the route, but she sure looks the part of a 660 greyhound. Anyone out of Super C Alice can run this far. Don’t be surprised by an upset. WW Spending Time is a solid grade A winner over 660 that could be a tough as well tonight. She is a bit short late and that could cost her in the final few strides tonight. Alcohol U Later is a strong closer that is a big outclassed in this effort. Still young, showing promise, despite the grade disadvantage, he is good enough to factor at the wire here against these. (8-5-7-4) Race 12 – WW Porro has not missed the quiniela in 4 straight and has not finished out of the money in 6 races in a row. He has good early speed, will be a threat to the early leaders, and late will prove best for the win. BGR Woe Is Me is loving the new distance and has taken to it like a fish to water. Getting better in every start, don’t overlook those back to back wins. A new grade A, she lacks experience, but not late drive to talent. She too could be a threat to win here. LK’s Haul N Cash needs to get back breaking, and back on track, if she wants a chance to shine tonight, and in the stretch everyone better be wary of the hard closing TMC’s Skatman as they approach the finish line. (8-5-7-4) Race 14 – I know it is new to the distance, but sometimes you have to go in instinct. Pat C Jacob loved the rail and gets the one box in this effort. He is not short! He is a powerful greyhound, and you cannot forget about that 30.21 clocking sitting there 3 races back. He will break better over the route and I expect him to make quite a debut over 660 yards tonight. Trying to challenge him will be the trio of grade A 660 routers. LK’s I Got This is a good breaker that will prompt the pace throughout in this effort, especially from the 8 box. RTSS Gonwitdawin is tough when she is close early on. No big speed around here in this effort and breaking from a favorable post, she contends too. Arby can come on strong late on occasion and looks to make the most of the 2 box here. If the mood is right, she has the speed to challenge as well. (1-8-6-2) Round 2 will run on Friday evening January 17th as all 5 races return. Don’t miss out on your favorites as we surge on thru to the finals on Saturday evening February 1st at bestbet Jacksonville. Previous Next

  • IGP KING & QUEEN STAKE | National Greyhound

< Back IGP KING & QUEEN STAKE Jul 7, 2021 Some days, things don’t go well until the end. That would sum up the Fourth of July for Copper Kettle trainer Jake Ungs. It took until the final of Iowa Greyhound Park’s King and Queen stakes to have a good day. “None of our dogs were running very well today,” Ungs said. “All of a sudden Big Iron made the day.” KB’s Big Iron grabbed an early lead and wasn’t threatened to claim the championship. He posted a 31.66 for a 5½-length victory over JW Montego. “He had a fabulous break,” said co-owner Joe Fusaro. “He hit the lid and was out first. I thought he had a chance.” Fusaro owns Big Iron with Joe Frenette. BGR Wide Open, of Boeckenstedt Kennel, broke even with Big Iron, who had the four box. But Big Iron, from Lonesome Cry and Boc’s Hall Baby, held a lead entering the first corner. Wide Open slid out a bit and slowed the field, providing an edge for Big Iron. JW Montego, of Jackson Greyhounds, tried to close the gap and got within four lengths, but Big Iron hit the gas and cruised to the title. “The four box is what we wanted,” Ungs said. “He’s all about running his race and hitting the lid. He likes the middle.” Big Iron almost didn’t make the field. “We have lots of A’s,” Ungs said. “He was technically my last king entry. Everyone (in the kennel) is equally matched.” RF Juanita, of Superior Kennel, showed and Vino Val, of Copper Kettle, closed into fourth. Juanita was second in qualifying in the queen’s side. Vino Val was tied for second in king’s qualifying. Big Iron paid $26.60,$12.80 and $8.40. He was fourth in the king’s bracket qualifying, and Montego was tied for second. The top qualifier in the King’s bracket, KW Carlo Gambino, of Jackson Greyhounds, was fifth. Superior Bonnie, of Superior Kennel, was top seed in the Queen’s bracket. She was seventh. The rest of the field’s finishes were: BGR Wide Open, sixth, and JD Tonic, of Stidham & Brindle Kennel, eighth. The purse was $30,000, with $12,000 to the winner, $6,000 to the runner-up and $3,000 to third. Fourth place earned $2,400, fifth $,2100, sixth, $1,800, seventh, $1,500 and eighth, $1,200. The win tied the stakes series with the queens. Both have 18 victories through the years. Gonz Dandelion, of T&T Kennel, a king, won last year. • NGA FALL MEET WRAP UP | National Greyhound

< Back NGA FALL MEET WRAP UP Jim Gartland Oct 19, 2021 In spite of the light number of pups consigned, the fall auction has to be considered a success. 140 pups were entered in the meet with 70 consigned to the auction. After a week of schooling and two rounds of races the consignors walked their charges into the ring at the Hall of Fame early Friday morning. When all was said and done, 34 race meet pups had been sold for a total of $363,000. The top selling greyhound was LS Zoom who was owned and consigned by David Strong & Jill Lashmet . Zoom went to Tom Ferris for a cool $37,500. LK's Simone , raced by David Strong and owned by Jill Lashmet sold for $30,000 and went to Lester Raines . Vince Berland consigned a couple of broods to the auction and they brought $5,500 and $2,500. Several items including a print, a stud service and a surprise donation of a giveaway pup raised some $2,550 in donations to the Hall of Fame. Thanks to J oe Frenette, Jill Lashmet, Bob Crossland, HS Auction Co . and Leslie Csokasy for those contributions. The overall top seller in the meet was David Strong who sold 16 pups either solely or in partnerships for $203,500. The biggest buyer at the meet was Norm Rader who bought $63,000 worth of stock.
