  • $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS 2021 WHEELING STAKES SCHEDULE | National Greyhound

< Back $100,000 MOUNTAINEER CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS 2021 WHEELING STAKES SCHEDULE Stan Pawloski Aug 4, 2021 In last year’s championship final of the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic at Wheeling Island, West Virginia-bred sprinter CG’s Penny Shoe closed deep in the stretch to give the Abrahamson Kennel and trainer Tom Engle their biggest stakes victory ever. CG’s Penny Shoe went on to earn 2020 first team All-American honors from the National Greyhound Association as well as a spot on the all-Wheeling team. The $100,000 Mountaineer Classic is back this year and highlights the 2021 stakes schedule for Wheeling Island. The racetrack’s featured stakes event is scheduled for October and is sandwiched between a pair of West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association championships – a juvenile and a middle distance stake. The stakes schedule has been approved by the West Virginia Racing Commission. Just like last year, there is no start requirement for greyhounds coming in from other racetracks as well as Wheeling-based racers for the Mountaineer Classic. Greyhounds must only have one schooling race and need not have reached a certain grade to enter the stakes event. The winning greyhound will receive approximately 40 percent of the total stakes purse – a check of $42,000. Runner up is worth $18,000 with the third place finisher receiving $13,000 and fourth place getting $10,000. Fifth and sixth place will receive $5,500 each while seventh and eighth will get $3,000 apiece. There will be three qualifying rounds – Sunday, Oct. 3, Friday, Oct. 8 and Wednesday, Oct. 13 – before the semifinals on Sunday, Oct. 17. The championship final will be on Saturday, Oct. 23. The 2020 Mountaineer Classic had an opening field of 88 sprinters. The $35,000 WVGOBA Juvenile Stakes (5/16th) will be held in September. The first round is set for Friday, Sept. 10, the second round on Wednesday, Sept. 15 and the semi-finals on Sunday, Sept. 19. The juvenile stakes final is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25. The $65,000 WVGOBA Keystone Championship (3/8th) starts on Friday, Nov. 12, with the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 17. The semifinals will be contested on Sunday, Nov. 21. The Keystone stakes championship is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 27. Previous Next

Hi Noon Recoil, a 33-month-old son from a litter by SH Avatar and Hi Noon Wheezy, was among four first-round winners to advance to the next round on Wednesday’s matinee card. It was the 25th lifetime victory from 62 starts for the Missy Kubitz trainee. Hi Noon Recoil, owned by Charles Haliburton III, is making his Derby Lane stakes debut. He paid $6.80 as the second wagering favorite. Floyd kennel’s Kaias Martin recorded a box-to-wire five-length win in his qualifier, clocking a time of 30.58 seconds. She returned $10.40 as the fourth betting pick. The top four finishers in each race comprise the 16-dog, two-race field on Wednesday. The top four finishers from those races move on to the championship race in a rare Sunday matinee performance, with each one receiving shares of a purse structure which totals a combined payout of $30,000. LK’s Crush N It of Lashmet kennel was not one of those to advance. The 2019 All-America first-team member finished seventh in his qualifier, seven lengths behind Fine SB Lines. LK’s Crush N It, a five-time stakes winner, has 92 career victories from 152 starts. LK’s Santorini, another Lashmet athlete who has locked up her first meet win title, did move on with a third-place showing in the race won by Hi Noon Recoil. Some fan favorites for the first round of qualifying include: Race 4 appears to belong to the inside-posted racers, the strong finishers #1Pat C Inferno (Flying Fired – Pat C Pop In, Koppe, Staats & Collins) and #2 Arkansbdchikhik s (Golden Squire – Arkans BD Cheeks, Royal Racing Team) along with the early speedster #3 Barts Mandy More (KC And All – Barts Midniterun, James Douglas) and the strong first-turn rusher #4 Heremecoming (KC And All – Tango Tessa, Janie Carroll). Race 6 : The probable post-time favorite looks to be the well-posted #1 Barts These Eyes (Barcelona Boss – B’s That’s My Jam, James Douglas). This track veteran will be going for her third-consecutive victory. Race 8 : Several qualifiers in this event have a shot at pulling off the victory, including the well-posted #1 Superior Roza (Gable Sour Cream – Superior Rawlins, B & B Racing) and the two early speedsters #5 I Can Do Badboy (Offthebrakedrake – Pippi, D. Q. William) and the youngster #8 Barts Timetoplay (KC And All – Barts Cherrypie, James Douglas). Race 10 : The way this qualifier will play out depends on who will be on the lead entering the backstretch. It could be #1 Mister Red Rader (Flying Titanium – Rip N Runnin, B & B Racing), #5 Oshkosh Noisy (Oshkosh Lamont – Oshkosh Vani, James Douglas) or #7 Grean Street (Flying Coal City – Kebo Cutler, Rader Racing). Also keep an eye out for the strong closer, #2 Its Hammer Time (Right Connection – Blondbombshell, Janie Carroll). Race 12 : This is a tough one. One could make a case for almost every Greyhound in this race! Good luck! Race 14 : The most likely post time favorite should be #8 Shine N Shut Up (Need My Moneynow – Diamond Tears, D. Q. Williams). He drew the best post and should be able to clear the first turn on top. Race 15 : Three entries will be sharing the majority of the win pool due to great racing positions, including a finalist in the recently run $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity, #1 RF Oka (Chasmo’s Dutch – Superior Megryan, B & B Racing), the consistent athlete #2 JS Mane Event (KC And All – TY Kay Event, Rader Racing) and the extremely well-placed #8 Getting The Money (Offthebrakedrake – Goodluck Topaz, D. Q. Williams), who will be going for his third straight win. The $50,000 He’s My Man Classic is the first event in Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $150,000 “Big 3" Stakes series, which includes the $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby (Saturday afternoon, February 29) and the $50,000 Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational (Saturday afternoon, March 14). • James (Jimmy) Blanchard Elected To Hall of Fame | National Greyhound

< Back James (Jimmy) Blanchard Elected To Hall of Fame Jim Gartland Oct 8, 2024 Longtime kennel owner, operator, NGA Board Member and Florida political point man, Jim Blanchard was the lone nominee to receive enough votes for induction into the 2024 class of the Greyhound Hall of Fame. Jimmy was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1957. His mother and Father divorced and his Dad, Pat, moved to Florida in the early 60's where Pat fell in love with greyhound racing while working across the street from the Sanford-Orlando track. Spending the summers of his youth in Florida, Jimmy soon fell in love with the business as well. Jimmy spent years working on the farm and in kennels honing his craft and learning all he could about the greyhounds. By the time he was 18 years old, he was offered his first trainers job at Monticello and from there he would go on to train with various kennels at numerous tracks around the country. His first booking experience came as a partner with his Dad at Pensacola in 1981. His first solo booking would not come until 1994 when the Jim Blanchard Kennel made its debut at Naples. Since then Jimmy has run all over the country, with kennels at or near the top wherever he ran, most recently with double bookings at Jacksonville until the demise of Florida. His son James continues the family tradition with current bookings at Tri State and Wheeling. Along with his accomplishments on the racing side, Jimmy has long been a force in the industry as a board member of the NGA for some 20 plus years. He also served on the Board of the AGC for many years and was the main point man for the Florida Greyhound Association and their seemingly endless battles with the Florida track operators. Jimmy spent many, many days, weeks and years fighting for the betterment of the sport and of all the people involved in it, mostly at his own expense. He will be honored in ceremonies at the Hall of Fame during the 2024 fall meet. Previous Next
