< Back "MADNESS" TO ENSUE AT SOUTHLAND Shane Bolender Mar 12, 2021 One of the most popular stakes events for racing fans of Southland looks to give it another go this Saturday after this event was canceled midway through March last year as the COVID-19 pandemic altered life for so many people. The three month delay in returning to live racing caused the event to be canceled but hopes are high that this year’s version will not only be completed, but provide many upsets and close calls at the wire that “Hound Madness” has been known for over the years. Sixty-four greyhounds start the event in a “bracket” style elimination format. In order to advance in this stakes race, you must beat the greyhound you are bracketed with. There are no earned points. There are no “top four finish” automatically advances. You can finish second in the race and be eliminated, while at the other end of the spectrum, finish seventh and still have a shot to make it to the next round. The only way to ensure advancement is to win six straight. Do that, it will also earn you the 2021 racing season’s first stakes championship. So who will “cut down the nets” so to speak? See below for a preview. WEST REGION AIR ACE (Gloria Dorsey Kennel) earned the number 1 seed in this region, but looks to face some tough competition in a hurry if top seeds do indeed advance in this part of the bracket. Palm Beach star BUG BRUSH won 13 of 22 down in South Florida to close out live racing in the state and took only 3 starts to get into top grade here at Southland. He is the #8 seed here and would pair up with AIR ACE should both advance to the round of 32. Stakes veteran ARKANS PHERKAD (Darren Henry Kennel) and PAT C RAM ROD are the #2 and #3 seeds respectively at the bottom of this region’s bracket. Pherkad has been a solid AA greyhound since the beginning of 2020 and competed in the finals of two stakes races last season while PAT C RAM ROD (Gloria Dorsey) finished second in the Festival of Stakes to World Ruler in the Male Sprint championship and won the Southland Derby consolation last season. Either one of these greyhounds would be capable of making a “FURRY FOUR” run. MIDWEST REGION It is not often you see a greyhound with 13 career starts get tagged with a #1 seed, but that is exactly what CRAIGIE DELEGATE (Lester Raines Kennel) earned via winning 10 of those 13 starts to rocket up to top grade and win four of five in that top grade as well. He has beaten the likes of ARKANS PHERKAD and MONSTER BOX already and beat other fields by 9 and 10 lengths already. He looks the part and uses a fantastic rush to the turn to do most of his damage on the track. Is there anyone in this region that can mount a challenge to this youngster? FGF MATHIAS (Charter Kennel) definitely has the late speed to do it. He was the 2020 Great American Greyhound Futurity Champion and even won the Barry Baldwin Juvenile Consolation race in the Festival of Stakes. Due to that late speed, he has been spending a lot of time lately on the Razorback (660 yards) and River (703 yards) courses, where he won tallied his last seven wins since October. JS PRETTY FLY (Lester Raines) is the #3 seed in the division who has a pretty good rush to the turn herself, and has victories in top grade over AIR ACE and CTW CHIP N DALE. She tends to sometimes gas out a little bit near the finish line, so she will need the lead in the race against either of the two favorites more than likely to have a chance. EAST REGION The greyhound with likely the best “name recognition” in the field has the #1 seed here, the second such top seed for trainer Monte Hoopes and the Lester Raines Kennel. JS FLAMIN ACE has been on a tear over the past year or so plus, winning the Darby Henry Male Sprint Championship and the Kings Vs. Queens Stakes in 2019 and parlayed that success with winning the Southland Derby this past year. He won half his 32 starts last year in a shortened racing season, but he is also approaching four years old in a couple of months. This region might give us an incredible “Greyt 8” showdown between the old and young starts if kennelmate JS KEEPHOPEALIVE can make it that far. It took this red fawn female only seven starts to reach top grade and has won 8 of her 17 career starts so far and she doesn’t even turn two years old until next month. It will take some really good early speed to compete with her to the first turn. AB CONSTABLE (Plum Creek) and the number 4 seed in the region also has some good top grade credentials and the late speed that makes him a threat as the field dwindles down, should he be able to advance through the first two rounds of eight dog fields. SOUTH REGION A pair of Darren Henry kennel greyhounds grace the top two seeds in this region as ARKANS RB TAZ and ARKASKA KAREN claim those spots respectively. The former had an amazing 30 quiniela finishes in just 40 starts last season while the latter has already won nearly a third of her 32 lifetime starts. TAZ has a hard late speed that can catch almost anyone while KAREN tends to be more early speed, albeit inconsistently. If anyone is going to pull off an upset, it needs to be in the early rounds against these two. ALADDIN is the sneaky #3 seed in this region from the A Ray Kennel. He raised some eyebrows just as recently as last week when he held off super pup CRAIGIE DELAGATE in a somewhat shocking victory. If he was to get loose early and lead by the turn, it will take one heck of an effort to catch him. Catch all the rounds of the 2021 “HOUND MADNESS” Stakes at Southland Casino & Racing. Complete schedule is below. - FRIEND DELILAH'S GREATNESS RECALLED ON TRACK ANNIVERSARY | National Greyhound
< Back FRIEND DELILAH'S GREATNESS RECALLED ON TRACK ANNIVERSARY Stan Pawloski Aug 22, 2022 When considering the best greyhound to ever grace the Wheeling Island oval, two names always come to the surface – Friend Delilah and DD’s Nelson. Both were superstars in the 1980s, Friend Delilah from 1980-82 and DD’s Nelson shortly thereafter from 1985-88. The pair combined for 186 victories during their Wheeling careers. While Friend Delilah opened her career in Florida, she spent most of her racing years at Wheeling Downs (later changed to Wheeling Island). She never captured a stake race final but still holds records for most career Wheeling victories (106) and most wins in a single year (47). DD’s Nelson not only shined at Wheeling but on the national stage – receiving All-American honors in 1987 when he won the Stroh’s Invitational Sprint in Colorado, the New Hampshire Invitational Cup, and the Wheeling Countdown Stakes. He had 80 Wheeling victories during his career. With the month of August marking 46 years of Wheeling greyhound racing, let’s take a little trip down memory lane to recognize the accomplishments of the only greyhound in Wheeling racing history to surpass 100 career victories – Friend Delilah. The sprinter arrived in West Virginia from Jacksonville, Fla., in the spring of 1980 – winning 23 races her first year at the Wheeling Island oval and making the final of the $45,000 City of Wheeling Stakes. The next season Delilah blossomed into one of the track’s all-time greats. Not only was Friend Delilah the Wheeling win champion in 1981 with 47 victories, but she shared the national win crown with J.R.’s Speck (Tucson, AZ). Friend Delilah captured 10 straight races in her stellar season (a track record at the time) and she established two 5/16 track marks – 30.43 on April 9 and 30.34 on April 14 (both since broken). She was a finalist for the second straight year in the $45,000 City of Wheeling Stakes. In addition to her 47 victories, Friend Delilah, who raced out of the Julian Dial Kennel, had 12 seconds and 4 thirds in 76 starts in 1981 – a 61 percent win mark, a 77 percent quiniela finish and an 82 percent in the money record. Friend Delilah was a darling – a greyhound fans adored. “She epitomized the term fan favorite. In fact, she became a legend during the 1981-82 racing seasons. Back in those days, fans would make sure they were on hand for the race cards when she drew in. She was the mutual favorite in 66 of her 76 races in 1981,” Robin Reed, local greyhound racing historian, related. “I recall West Virginia Gov. Jay Rockefeller took a photo op with Delilah and her trainer Ken Purdy during one of his visits to Wheeling. One fan even made up a song in honor of Delilah. Near the end of her great career, fans gave her a standing ovation when she won her much anticipated victory No. 100 in the summer of 1982. That was truly a golden age for Wheeling racing and I’m glad many patrons still have memories of what a great greyhound she was.” In late 1981, Purdy knew he was handling one of the greats in Friend Delilah – owned by Vernon and Julian Dial. “She’s always had the desire and it never wore off. She’s all desire,” Purdy said. “She’s special and she knows it.” Friend Delilah’s game was getting out of the box and to the first turn on top. Friend Delilah, a December 1977 greyhound out of Opposed-My Friend Dee, was the Wheeling win champ again in 1982 with 36 victories to go along with 17 seconds and 6 thirds in 70 starts. In 214 career races at Wheeling, Delilah had 106 wins, 45 seconds and 22 thirds. At Jacksonville in 1979, Friend Delilah had 6 wins, 5 seconds and 6 thirds in 51 races – a track where she was baffled by the outside lure. She was Grade C when she came to Wheeling, but quickly made the climb up the ladder to Grade AA. In 265 career races, Friend Delilah had 112 victories, 50 seconds and 28 thirds. She was the tenth greyhound in the Sport of Queen’s history to reach 100 career wins and her 112 victories overall place her seventeenth on the all-time win list. Purdy said “she can’t win every time, nobody does,” but she made a habit of crossing the wire first. Reed said Friend Delilah’s performance during the 1981 racing year was one for the ages. “Delilah’s 1981 season was historic. Few Wheeling greyhounds have ever come close to dominating the island oval as she did that year. She set track records for most wins in a calendar year, most consecutive wins and two speed records,” Reed said. “Plus, she made the finals of the track’s premier sprint stake race. It’s amazing to me that her 47 wins record is still intact after 41 years.” The closest was 42 wins in 1990 by DC Jay Bird, who shared the national win championship that year with JL Rat. Greyhounds ahead of Friend Deliliah on the all-time win list are JR’s Ripper, 143; Indy Ann and Happy Voyage, 137 each; JJ Littlerichard, 132; L.L.’s Doug, 128; JJ Doc Richard and WW Headliner, 123 each; LD’s Bahama, 121; Sarah Cap and JL Rat, 120 each; Okie Bootsy and Darius Stone, 118 each; Miss Whirl and and Algoe Boss, 115 each; Marathon Hound and Gilded Sherry, 113 each. While August marks 46 years of live greyhound racing at Wheeling, the rich history of the island facility dates back 100 plus years – first serving as a fairground before becoming a track for thoroughbreds and harness racing. When horse racing fizzled in the early 1970s, Wheeling Downs (later changed to Wheeling Island) opened as a greyhound track on Aug. 18, 1976 – a year after dog racing was approved by the State of West Virginia. Greyhound racing re-energized the facility as more than 4,000 fans attended opening day. In the history of the racetrack, five greyhounds in the U.S. Greyhound Hall of Fame set paws on the Wheeling Island oval. Kiowa Sweet Trey is the only one who considered Wheeling his home track while the others – K’s Broadway, EA’s Itzaboy, Rooster Cogburn and Dutch Bahama – competed in stake races at the island raceway. All have most of their accomplishments from competing nationally, but each won at least one race in Wheeling as part of their Hall of Fame resume. Following are capsule looks at the five Hall of Famers: KIOWA SWEET TREY – Inducted 2011; owned by Vince Berland and Smith Greyhounds; 12-race win streak from Maiden debut through Grade AA in 2001 (track record); captured 16 out of 18 starts and two Hot Box races the same year. K’S BROADWAY – Inducted 2015; owned by Jack Hahn; won 1987 Wheeling Challenge Invitational. EA’s ITZABOY – Inducted 2014; owned by Frederick Fulchino; captured the 2002 Commissioner’s Cup and fourth in the 2003 Commissioner’s Cup. ROOSTER COGBURN – Inducted 2007; owned by Wayne Strong; won the 1977 Thomas F. Shehan Sprint Classic. DUTCH BAHAMA – Inducted 1990; owned by Herb “Dutch” Koerner; won first round of the 1985 West Virginia Classic, checked in the second round and was disqualified. FRIEND DELILAH TIMELINE February 1, 1980 – Friend Delilah made her debut at Wheeling with a Grade B victory in a time of 32.03 and paid $6.60 to win. She previously raced on the Jacksonville circuit in Florida compiling a record of 6 wins, 5 seconds and 6 thirds in 51 starts. October 10, 1980 – Finished eighth in the finals of the $45,000 City of Wheeling Stakes, a sprint event won by 1980 track win champ J’s Susie. Delilah had 3 wins, 1 third and 1 fourth in five qualifying round races. March 24, 1981 – Completed an eight-race winning streak with a 2-length Grade AA win in a time of 31.28. The streak tied the track record previously held alone by Roman Princess (1976). April 9, 1981 – Broke the 5/16th track record with a 30.43 effort in an 8-length box-to-wire victory. The previous mark was held by Mr. Tomo, who stopped the clock in 30.44 in November 1980. April 14, 1981 – Broke her own 5/16th track record in back-to-back efforts with a 30.34 in another box-to-wire 6 ½-length victory. July 24, 1981 – Finished seventh in the finals of the $45,000 City of Wheeling Stakes, a sprint event won by Florida invader Dr. Futch. Delilah had 2 wins, 1 second and 1 third in five preliminary round starts. September 24, 1981 – Posted her record-breaking 34th win of 1981, besting the single season mark of 33 victories held by J’s Susie. December 11, 1981 – Completed a record-breaking 10-race winning streak with a 1-length box-to-wire effort, her 45th victory of the year. December 26, 1981 – Won her 47th race of the year, establishing a calendar year win record for Wheeling which still stands. April 16, 1982 – Posted a 2-length box-to-wire victory to complete what would be a 20-race in-the-money streak, the longest of her career. She had 16 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds in the streak. June 14, 1982 – Ran second by a head in the Governor’s Cup Trophy Race, caught in the stretch by 17-1 longshot River Roy. July 19, 1982 – Won her 100th career race with a 3-length box-to-wire effort in a time of 30.63, becoming only the 10th greyhound in the history of the sport to reach 100 career wins at the time. November 29, 1982 – Posted the 112th win of her career with a 1-length victory over Urban Cowboy in a time of 30.93. It would be the final win of her illustrious career. December 13, 1982 – Finished out of the money in what ended up being the final race of her career after injuring an ankle and placed on the inactive list. (Compiled by Robin Reed, local greyhound historian) Friend Delilah, a star at Wheeling Downs in the early 1980s, won 112 career races which places her seventeenth on the all-time win list. - Artex Pumbaa joins elite group with 11-race win streak | National Greyhound
< Back Artex Pumbaa joins elite group with 11-race win streak Stan Pawloski Feb 20, 2024 The chase is over. Artex Pumbaa’s run at Casual Casey’s Wheeling track record of 16 wins in a row ended recently when the Blanchard Kennel sprint star missed his break and finished out of the money after posting 11 straight Grade AA victories. Only nine greyhounds in the history of Wheeling Island racing history have longer consecutive winning streaks than Artex Pumbaa. His 11 victories in a row started on Dec. 1, 2023, and ended on Feb. 9, 2024. A May 2020 greyhound out of Flying Hydrogen-Arkans Cancer, Artex Pumbaa had closing efforts in seven of his 11 victories while in the other four wins the sprinter was on top around the first turn. Artex Pumbaa’s 11 straight victories were by a combined 34 lengths – a 3-length average margin of victory. He had wins by 6 ½, 6, 5 ½, 4 and 3 ½ (twice) lengths during his streak. Lengthy winning streaks are rare – there’s only been 22 Wheeling win streaks of at least 10 in a row. Local greyhound fan and historian Robin Reed, who has tracked Wheeling racing since its inception in 1976, feels a streak of 10 or more is a sign of a truly elite greyhound. “Of all the greyhound stats, total wins, stakes wins, and so forth, I think achieving a win streak of 10 or more races is probably the most difficult due to the fact that so many obstacles need to be overcome. A lot of greyhounds are very dependent on a good post position, but a big win streak will surely contain some less than ideal holes,” Reed said. “Weather can also be an obstacle if sloppy or muddy track conditions prevail. For any greyhound to be at his or her best for a few months without missing a beat is astounding.” James Blanchard called his star, Artex Pumbaa, multidimensional with a ton of desire. “(Artex) Pumbaa can break on top, or he can come from behind. He’s so consistent and tries hard every race … a lot of heart,” Blanchard said. “I’m so proud of what he’s accomplished.” In 2023, Artex Pumbaa posted a special season by sharing the track win championship with JSP Rayzendacash and earned the captaincy of the all-Wheeling team. In 51 starts, he had 22 wins, 8 seconds, 6 thirds and 6 fourths. Artex Pumbaa is trained by Chris Maynard and owned by Rachelle Henry and Joe Frey. Following is a listing of the 22 Wheeling win streaks of at least 10 in a row, date achieved and how the streak ended. - FLYING ZULU CATCHES FIRE IN RAZORBACK STAKES QUALIFYING | National Greyhound
< Back FLYING ZULU CATCHES FIRE IN RAZORBACK STAKES QUALIFYING Shane Bolender Aug 20, 2020 There were just three greyhounds undefeated after the round 2 cuts were made in the $70,000 Razorback Classic Stakes at Southland Casino Racing. FLYING ZULU wasn’t one of them. After round three, there were zero undefeated left. But the Kelly Everett trained entry for the Bussmann-Balakas kennel was the only entry to put together three straight wins from the original field of 64 and he has looked good in the process. As the qualifying rounds have progressed, he improved off an opening round 4th place finish to winning by increasingly larger margins, even though the competition has gotten tougher and tougher. In round 2 he held tough to a length lead in the stretch run to save him from possibly being cut from the field for round 3. In round 3 he rode a comfortable 5 ½ length win in box to wire style. In the semi-finals, although he didn’t break on top, he broke well and easily took the lead and never looked back, coasting home by nearly nine lengths. Those three victories to end qualifying not only assured him of an easy spot in the field of eight for the championship race this Friday evening, it made him the qualifying points leader. That isn’t to say he won’t face some stiff competition in the championship race though. Lester Raines Kennel’s O YA SNIPER can also claim three wins in four qualifying races, but a sixth place finish in round 2 cost him the top spot in qualifying points. The black 75 pound male is a early speed specialist and is tough to catch on the lead. Northshore Kennel’s OD AXELSKATER was an unknown talent and was actually in grade B when qualifying began. That stay in B was short lived, as well as his first official start in Grade “A” when he won his first two qualifying rounds. He finished off qualifying with two solid third place efforts to coast into the championship third overall with 44 points. JS KING KUNTA (Mike Harris Kennel) was amongst the leaders after the first two rounds of qualifying when he chalked up a win and asecond place effort. He was in contention in round three before fading back to a sixth place finish putting him on the edge of making even the consolation field. Those fears were put to rest in the semi-finals when he got back to his winning ways, landing him in a tie for fourth place for total qualifying points. The other greyhound involved in the tie was SUPER C CHILLY, the second of three Lester Raines Kennel finalists. This blue brindle all but had a championship race spot locked in after the first three rounds where he earned two victories and a runner-up effort. It was a good thing he didn’t need any more points to make the championship race, as he ended up running sixth in the semi-finals. He will look to get back into form on Friday evening. There was a tie for sixth place in the standings as well, led by CTW CROSSFIRE (Steve M. Sarras Kennel) who boosted himself into the championship primarily on the heels of two victories during qualifying. He added a couple of fourth place finishes as well, which was sorely needed as the cut line for making the championship ended up being an abnormally high 37 points. Lester Raines final entry, O YA DREAM ON had just one victory in qualifying, but added a couple of solid second place efforts to sit good going into the semi-finals. He needed to finish at least 5th to sneak into one of two finals spots, but did one spot better (fourth) to earn some breathing room. Speaking of that final spot, JACK KNIGHT with 37 qualifying points earned that distinction of “last one in” and that seemed to be the theme for him throughout qualifying. The 70 pound black male just made the first cut of the field after race two behind a third and fourth place effort, earning just 12 points in that process. He needed to earn a victory and no worse than a second place effort in the last two round to earn a spot in the field, and that ended up being exactly what he did. If you believe in destiny for a greyhound to upset the world in a stakes race, he got a bonus for the championship when the rail runner drew the coveted #1 box for the big race. With no undefeated greyhounds, the race is a bit wide open for just about anybody to come and earn the first stakes championship of the COVID-19 interrupted season. With the exception of O YA SNIPER and SUPER C CHILLY, the rest of the field is sitting pretty good with their post positions to make a bid for it. O YA SNIPER has the early foot to overcome his spot and SUPER C CHILLY ran first and second from outside post positions during qualifying so it adds the parity of the field overall. Make sure to catch this exciting race which is slated as race #11 on the Friday evening performance. The consolation race will proceed the championship as race #9 . Previous Next

- DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE | National Greyhound
< Back DERBY LANE MEET UPDATE Jul 27, 2020 Since 2004, the Abernathy brand has failed to appear on the proverbial kennel championship trophy at Derby Lane. Kennel owners Jim and Kayruth Abernathy came close three times during those 27 meets – finishing second three times (2019, 2015, 2014). As Derby Lane’s July-to-December meet winds down its first month this week, the Abernathys have put themselves in position to make history. Entering Monday’s 15-race performance, Abernathy kennel parlayed a big week to move into second place in the win standings. After recording a meet-tying 16 victories in the previous week, Abernathy trails only reigning champion Lester Raines, 50-42, in the win race. Abernathy and Lester Raines are the only kennels to collect 16 wins so far in a calendar week during the meet. Lester Raines won 16 races on July 6-11. Abernathy and Capabal were the lone kennels to notch at least one victory on all seven performances. Abernathy ended the week the way it started: getting four wins on the first and final cards. Six of Abernathy’s winners paid double-digits to win, including the $31.40 returned by Grade A athlete Charlotte York on Wednesday. That victory represented the first career Grade A win by Charlotte York from 61 starts. The 2-1/2-year old daughter of Pat C Clement and Krazy Kara was the longest shot on the board at 14-1 odds in the 550-yard race. She won in box-to-wire fashion by 2-1/2 lengths in 31.08 seconds for owner Steve Sarras. Abernathy’s 16 winners produced an average payout of $10.20 for a $2 win ticket. Nova ranks third among 14 kennels with 39 victories, followed by Capabal at 38, and Everett Racing at 37. Derby Lane features seven weekly performances with matinee racing Monday through Saturday, and a Saturday evening card. Previous Next
