With more rain already falling this week in the Ohio Valley and the probability of weekend Ohio River flooding again, live greyhound racing has been canceled for Wheeling Island Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.

Sunday cancelation is also a possibility, but no firm decision has been made yet. The rain is expected to continue through Sunday morning.

Last weekend, the track canceled the Friday through Monday (special Presidents Day) race cards as the Ohio River neared 40 feet. Flood stage in Wheeling is 36 feet.

Forecasts call for the Ohio River to crest Sunday at 41.5 feet after topping 36 feet late Friday night.

The racetrack previously dealt with two floods in a relatively short time in September 2004 (remnants of Hurricane Ivan) and again in January 2005.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.

I have enjoyed watching and writing about these wonderful competitors, including All-Americans DD's Nelson, Kiowa Sweet Trey, Gene's Champion, WW Apple Jax, Greys Royalcrown, Nimby TP Jan, Hi Noon Hero, Gable Sour Cream, KB's Ruckus and Cry Case.
